A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

The first of the collected issues in this story didn't appeal to me because it seemed like they were straying too far away from the Marvel canon as I know it, but I read on and began appreciating the story in its own right and was hooked from about the second issue in.

Pros: I liked the way they have Spider-Man interacting with the Ultimates, especially the interaction between him and Captain America. I also liked that he probably signed his own death warrant by making one huge mistake involving the Human Torch and the Green Goblin.

Cons: He was drawn a little too small for my liking and it was patently obvious in the drawing that, while he might have had the strength to do some of the things they had him do in the comic, he didn't have the mass. A silly distinction I know because even a full grown man wouldn't have had enough mass, but it just didn't look believable to me.

A good comic, recommended.

What a lackluster way to go!! I was expecting something epic, something worthy of the great Peter Parker (even the Ultimate one). Something to honor his lifetime. This was not it. This was so randomly put together.
Also, the art felt inconsistend. I get that there are different artists, but in the first issue MJ looks like a chubby nerd and in the rest of them she looks like same old MJ, I don't get it.

Well you know where you are with this one from the start. The title renders spoilers pointless; it’s the ultimate spoiler. This is a tragedy, a course of events that are inevitable. Or rather it’s the denouement of the tragedy, the ultimate and likely result of a decision. In this case it’s Peter Parker’s decision to use his Uncle Ben’s death as a motivation for battling crime. In the original Marvel universe we’ll almost certainly never see Peter Parker truly die – commercial concerns and the character’s symbolic importance to the company dictate that. But in the Ultimate universe you can make that decision. You can make death stick in a way no-one believes death is permanent in superhero books.

This means this book has a symbolic power, the actual slaughter of one of Marvel’s sacred cows. This combines with the nature of this Ultimate Spider-Man, that he’s still the teenager Peter Parker was conceived and initially written as. There’s little more powerful than the death of someone so young with all that potential cut off. Before he even starts, before he’s written a word of the storyline Bendis has an explosive storytelling cocktail. And, as one of the better comic writers working today, he makes the most of it. The volume begins with a relatively standard battle with Mysterio over an artefact of power belonging to the Kingpin, but they’re really not the relevant points here. More important are the ongoing elements which give extra weight to the tragedy to come – Iron Man coming along to begin superhero training and J Jonah Jameson offering Peter a job and a college scholarship. It’s the onset of adulthood, of a life beginning to find direction. Of potential beginning to flower.

The simple caption after the prologue of issue 156 tells us it’s not going to be realised. It’s a short prologue which tells us Spider-Man’s most iconic foe still lives, followed by a longer sequence of him getting the old gang, the Sinister Six together. And from there… Captain America takes Spider-Man to a graveyard and, due to being called away with Nick Fury’s black ops team goes rogue, fails to tell him what might be an important lesson about life and death and how to be a superhero. We get most of the lesson which is as heavily portentous as the symbolism of the graveyard. Spider-Man follows Cap and saves him from being shot by the Punisher by taking the bullet for him in the first place. If I’ve one criticism, a point where this doesn’t quite ring true, it’s here where Cap simply abandons Spider-Man. It might be tackled in another story but in isolation it just feels wrong. And then he finds out the Sinister Six have escaped. Due to Spider-Man’s nature and the actions of others, the rest is inevitable. Suffice to say that Bendis ensures there’s a resonance to the death that ensures the story of this Peter Parker feels like it’s come full circle, one that’s best summed up by the image of Joe Quesada’s alternative cover. For once a superhero fails to defy the odds and it’s as satisfying and emotionally draining as you’d hope.

The mantle of Spider-Man would be resurrected, partly as a response to this. But as closure to the Peter Parker incarnation of the character it’s pretty close to perfect, emphasising what makes the character a hero and the flaws that brought him low. And in doing that it’s more vital and alive than anything done with Spider-Man in a long time.

WOW!!! Which doesn't even cover how good this story really is. The clue is in the title so while reading you can always feel death breathing down Peters neck, which heightens the tension immensely. Things appear to be going great for everyone's favourite superhero, and any fan knows that with the Parker luck that it isn't going to last. I love Bendis as a writer anyway and across a myriad of titles but it's with big stories like this that you really see why he is a Marvel Architect. It's not big action, though we do have some amazing set pieces expertly brought to life by our artist, these are just side pieces it's the emotional heart of the story which makes this a must read. Peters relationships are really explored and by the end there wont be many dry eyed readers. For a death scene it's up there and in true Spiderman heroics. Uncle Ben would be proud.
