In the World of Immortals, death doesn’t always mean the end. The Casket of Restoration has held Shann’s body for one hundred years, keeping her lifeless self in stasis while she harbors an aware consciousness.
Harnessing the only power she can, Shann uses her ability to find her way back to the outside world, landing in a compatible body of dubious design. Now a Devil Leader of a powerful cult, she struggles to come to terms with who she is and what she may never be again. To further complicate matters, she discovers that she is a candidate for a powerful apparatus that could save the world—if she can survive long enough to be selected.
Kassandra Lynn tells herself a bedtime story every night. When the plot gets too complicated and the cast overwhelming, she transcribes them into books she hopes you will enjoy.
'Book of Immortals: Candidate' is the second book in this unique series about a resourceful young woman who finds herself thrown into a world of immortals and must fight to protect those who matter most to her.
As with the first book this got off to a captivating start, with main character Celine dead. But as this is the world of immortals, death can't stop this hero from finding a way to come back. I loved the first book, but I have to say the story was even more engaging this time around. I found that I connected more with the characters and was emotionally invested in them virtually right from the start, which made for a more suspenseful read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this continuation of Celine's story. The writer is brilliantly inventive and I would never have predicted a few of the twists the story took. I very much look forward to the next book - can't wait to see what surprises lie in store as Celine continues her journey!
I would highly recommend this series to fans of fantasy. It's a captivating read and is unlike anything else I've read in the genre.
Candidate is the second book of the Book of Immortals series. You don't have to read the first book but I highly recommend it.
Some things that put me off in Disciple still stand, such as the flickery notion of time, how hundreds of years pass by in a glimpse without the characters doing anything, all the seclusion and their sole purpose seeming to be 'levelling up'… Makes me feel like even though the main character is now a couple hundred years old mentally she is still in her late teens, which is an odd notion.
There were quite a few spelling errors and I wish the chapters had been divided differently. Also, Eaden didn't sound like a child at all, especially when the narrative describes her as being 3 years old, and I wish Shann had spent more time with her.
But overall, I enjoyed the book a lot. In Book of Immortals: Candidate we get to explore things that were only mentioned in Disciple, like the World of Devils and the serf reality. The change of scenery was very much appreciated. I was very happy to see Celine/Shann reunited with Aaren and I secretly hope she never returns to the 'real' world. .
This book actually felt like it had a sense of purpose other than the relentless levelling up, which allowed me to feel much more engaged in the story. That and the fact that there didn't seem to be any obvious good or bad guys, everyone has feelings and wishes and hopes. It was never boring, always engaging, and I actually almost cried at the end. Even though I am feeling pretty sad after that ending, I can't wait for the next book in the series.
4.5 stars.

Review (I received this book in exchange for an honest review.) :
I have to say, the Book Of Immortals series is becoming quite a favourite of mine. However, I have to admit, in the second book of the series, Book Of Immortals: Candidate, Shann (who, by the way, is the main character) kinda got on my nerves. It just seemed like she never matured even though she went through so much. It’s weird really, her relationship with Aaren (though I do like it, in a way XD). It just seems like Aaren is still this distant person, emotionally, with Shann. Their relationship does improve, don’t get me wrong, just not really enough on an emotional level, I feel. Shann still acts like a child while Aaren is still, emotionally, this mysterious Head Disciple. I feel as if neither one of them has really grown up over the course of the first and second book.
I mean, I really wasn’t that concerned about Shann’s clingy, childish behaviour in the first book; in fact, her behaviour wasn’t half as bad in the first book as in the second book. I think Shann, after living all these years in the World Of Immortals, (not to mention on Earth), should really know better. I’m just really annoyed that Shann clings on to Aaren so much while Aaren basicallly appears to be indifferent at times. Although, when Aaren is sweet, he’s really sweet. And it’s kinda adorable. (Like when he stands up for Shann.) :)
Okay, so, this has kinda turned into a rant, of sorts. But now that I’ve gotten all that off my chest, I can really focus on the novel’s good points. (And there’s a fair number of them.) First off, plot. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. THE PLOT IS GREAT. I actually really really love it and it’s one of the few things that’s truly awesome ‘bout this series. I mean, it’s so unique that you can’t help but love it! However, a small downside is Kassandra’s writing; I do wish that her writing was better. Really, her writing, does not do the plot justice.
Second, I know I just complained about Aaren and Shann’s relationship, but they do have their special moments that just kinda make up for the not-so-special moments. Their love for each other is really endearing and one of the novel’s upsides (if you excuse the immaturity).
There’s plenty of other stuff about the series that’s great but it would take all day to mention these so I’ll just quickly run over a small list of pretty great stuff about this novel.
Erik is pretty amazing all by himself! He has an Archdragon and he uses a flute as his weapon. Besides, who doesn’t love the name, ‘Erik’? (Phantom Of The Opera!) I just love that Fabien is actually a guy who looks like a beautiful girl. Genius! I actually really like the fact that this book has characters with powers in them. It’s one of the things that drew me to this series. The idea of having powers is just, to put it simply, awesome!
That about wraps up my review of Book Of Immortals: Candidate! I think this series is one of those things where you either love it or you hate it, depending on how much things like style of writing and character development matter to you. Assuming you actually bothered to read this far, a MASSIVE ‘thank you’ to you! I really appreciate it!
Recommendation: I would recommend this novel to people who love fantasy with romance and adventure thrown in!
Once again, thank you so much, dear reader who actually made it this far! :)
Candidate is the second part of a sequel, though you can still read it without first reading its prequel (though why you would want to do that, I don't know, considering the first book is available for free).
In the first book, Book of Immortals: Disciples, I thought that it's pretty much a book with a 5-star plot but 1-star writing, 1-star character development and 2-star world building. In this second book, Candidate, we see a slight improvement in writing. World building is still non-existent here despite the mediocre attempt in book 1 at building a world that could potentially be as interesting as Westeros (Game of Thrones, for those who are wondering). Plot isn't as refreshingly new as Disciples. However, I'm pleased to say that the characters finally started to show some 3-demensionality to them. Shann is still the same horrible character who considers using violence to solve most things and runs to Aaren for everything else, but this time, it comes across more as a character flaw rather than a badly-written protagonist. The antagonists also seem less "I'm a villain because evil is cool" and more of "bad and good is really just a matter of perspective. You think I'm evil but really, situation forced me to become who I am".
Overall, I would call this a definite improvement on the author's part. Definitely look forwards to the final installment of the series. Even more so, I'm looking forwards to an overhaul to the series where the author actually hones her writing skills first, then rewrite the entire series again.
Celine has been dead for over 100 years. As she comes back to life, things have changed. She must overtake the body of a devil cult leader to try to save the world from another apocalypse.
A well written story with a unique lady as a lead. I really loved the originality of the story line, there are likable characters, and those that are not. The story is intense, a page turning delight. I was hooked from the first page, I just could not put it down. I strongly recommend Book of Immortals: Candidate to fantasy lovers. Great as a stand alone but I also recommend book one Book of Immortals: Disciple by Kassandra Lynn
The book is still as good at the first one, there is a stronger feeling of being into a videogame (I can almost see the xp and mana points rolling on the side of the page at times) and the character has not matured nor evolved in any visible way, which makes her difficult to stand at times. Which is why I really struggled to finish this book and will not go on with the next.
Still I like the author a lot and I like her world building, it's just amazingly good. I will try something else of hers
Like the first book, the main strength of this novel is the setting and magic system. The difference is that it is no longer the carrying factor, the writing has improved and the stakes have raised. Bravo.
