Robert Rodi

Robert was born in Chicago in the conformist 1950s, grew up in the insurrectionist 1960s, came of age in the hedonist 1970s, and went to work in the elitist 1980s. This roller-coaster ride has left him with a distinct aversion to isms of any kind; it also gave him an ear for hypocrisy, cant, and platitudes that allowed him, in the 1990s, to become a much-lauded social satirist.

After seven acclaimed novels set in the gay milieu, Robert grew restless for new challenges — which he found in activities as wide-ranging as publishing nonfiction, writing comic books, launching a literary-criticism blog, and taking to the stage (as a spoken-word performer, jazz singer, and rock-and-roll front man).

In 2011, excited by the rise of digital e-books, he returned to his first love, publishing new fiction inspired by the work of Alfred Hitchcock. He also organized the republishing of his seminal gay novels under the banner Robert Rodi Essentials.

Robert still resides in Chicago, in a century-old Queen Anne house with his partner Jeffrey Smith and a constantly shifting number of dogs.

Rogue, Rogue, Rogue that quintessential X-Men mystery, well not so much anymore as two, six comic book issues long stories, give us huge reveals about Rogue's early years, as a child, and then as member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants! Not brilliant, but not to shabby either a thought provoking look at Rogue's early years impacting on her, in the present. Guests including Gambit, Lady Deathstrike and Sunspot! A fair to middlin' 7 out of 12 from me. It's also the series that debuted her most popular comic book cover:

The first half of the book had rogue revisiting her childhood home and helping a mutant dream. It was really quite dumb and retconned her childhood into this asinine story of her parents living on a commune and trying to get to a part of the dream world called the "Far Banks". It was quite terrible but with good art by Cliff Richards.

The 2nd story had Rogue headed to Japan to help out Sunfire taking on Lady Deathstroke and Silver Samurai. It had ramifications for both Sunfire and Rogue for years to come. The story was much better but the art was subpar in places.

Second to storm rogue was my second favourite x men hero. Her power and backstory are sad whenever touching a another person she can see their memories and if she touches another mutant gains their powers and memories.

Fire story In this book covered rogues backstory and I found it really interesting what happened to her as a child and her surrounding on her mother. I don’t know if there was just a retelling of rogues backstory but it was thoroughly interesting one. The second story I didn’t get into as much not even worth noting here for me. But least rogue was a central focus, I LOVED gambit made an appearance, I’ve always shipped rogue and gambit together.

Overall this was half decent read for my first rogue comic read. Liking first story more than the second. I’m such a newbie reading comics much to learn about the artists and such. The art throughout was great too !!!

I preferred the first part of the book (I won't lie, I preferred that part because it had Gambit in it =p). I didn't know much about Rogue's dark past, so it was nice learning about it. Now I see why Remy loves her so much. Their love story is just so beautiful and frustrating and argh! *cries a river 'cause Remy can't touch Anna*
Oh and loved the graphics, as always.

The first half was intriguing and bittersweet, but the last half left a bad taste in my mouth and was both bland and a waste of time. Rogue is a really cool and interesting story, but there's not enough there for her to hold down her own series.

From a continuity standpoint, the second story was more impactful for the future of Rogue's character, while the first story was a chance to do a soft reboot on her past. Neither story achieved either Terrible or Terribly Good.

Rodi's story is nearly great. He doesn't have a firm grasp on Rogue's character, but he has a grasp on all the plotting and basic interpersonal relationships from the Austen run that this series dovetails out of. His decision to involve a dream world/dream mutants was interesting, but the idea of somehow attaching it to Native American culture was clunky. Sort of like if Poltergeist had made a big deal about the house being made on a Native American Burial Ground, only to reveal that all graveyards have the same effect. Ok, then, why bother to involve Native American culture, particularly when the crux of you using the culture is to expose the only actual Native American character in your story as a drunk fraud. It's lazy, stereotypical writing. Also, the actual dream elements at the end fall into almost Claremont-level melodrama.

Bedard's run sure had characters in it. And things definitely happened. But he also didn't seem to have any grasp on how the characters behaved with each other. I found myself flipping through most pages to just get the bare bones of the story, making it less successful than the Rodi arc, which I read every panel of.

I don't remember whether either or both of these stories have been retconned out of continuity, but if you're desperate for a Rogue story, and you see this on a Discounted Trades pile, you should flip through it and see if it interests you.

Wow! Its so hard for me to believe that people could like this. The first arc was abysmal. Rogue did everything in her power to not act like herself. Rob Rodi writes her like he's never read an X-Men comic before. Nothing about the arc was decent. The second arc, while better, was fraught with inconsistencies and ridiculous actions. I love the character of Rogue and she deserved so much better here.

If you're a fan of Rogue from the X-Men, this graphic novel collects her solo comics. Plenty of insight into her history, and includes the complete storyline in Japan that shaped her future.

Two Rogue adventures in one book.

To be honest I used to read Marvel comics a lot when I was younger but as the price of comics continued to rise and the content continued to change as much as repeat some of the past stories for new generations of readers I lost interest in all but the more interesting stories I would hear about now and then. However being one of my old favorite characters and being on sale on Kindle the Rogue mini series was a temptation I decided to check out. Man oh man, have things changed from what I can tell.

In the first half of the book, Going Rogue, is about Rogue discovering links to her past leading to pretty crazy story of doppelgangers, spirit beings, and familial love. The first thing that I noticed is the Ragin Cajun, Gambit is somehow blind making his addition to this book a real testament for how he cares about Rogue as he finds himself charming his way into danger. The second thing is Rogue seems to have lost of of her Captain Marvel powers that she stole long ago (probably a house of M side effect) so she has her usual training and her ability to absorb memories/powers at a touch but other than that she is as squishy as any of the other more normal team members with human endurances.

In the second half of the book, Forget-Me-Not, we see Rogue is shown with Mystique and Sunfire in a picture on the news but she not only does not remember having been there for the picture nor being in Japan with those two but has to deal with the implications of people being reminded of her troubled past. In the mean time Sunfire is suffering from his own quest as he is shamed by the fact this photo shows him with a known terrorist and her former partner. Crazy things happen here including the death of one person supposedly but who knows in the Marvel Universe. :)

All in all it was interesting revisiting old characters and seeing how they have changed over the years. Havoc and Polari who I believe were in X-Factor are now back in the main team it seems and it is nice to see Iceman is not as weak as he once was back in the days (though he does fall apart a little in the battles.) Maybe I'll look into some other mini series and see what peaks my interests in the future. :)

I really like this book. This book starts off with Gambit being blind (first six issues). When he shows back up at the end of the book, he has his eyesight again. X-Men #165 is when Gambit gets his eye sight back. That issue is collect in X-Men Day Of The Atom. And the events of that book takes place between the first six issues and the last six issues of Rogue The Complete Collection.

It's probably best to read the wolverine Weapon X story and anything else to understand Lady Deathstroke before reading Rogue The Complete Collection. It would've be nice if this collection included Sunfire's first appearance, but he's not Rogue and Rogue does not appear in that issue.

Also, would've been cool if Mystique showed up in the last story or had more justification on why she didn't show up. I read Mystique solo series before reading this, and her justification for not showing up is that she is wanted by FBI, but what if she did show up with Shortpack.

I have rarely seen so much absorbing in the X Men as I did in episode 1 here - the purported wish of Rogue’s to avoid using her main power seems to go out of the window here.

The first story is quite pedestrian until some nifty shifts around episode 4, when it goes off-piste and improves. Ditto for the structure of the second story, although this one works a little less well.

For those who love Rogue, it may just be true that she functions better in a team than on her own.

I enjoyed reading more about Rogue in this great collection. I especially liked the inclusion/hint of her past with Mystique, Destiny, and her deep friendship with Blindspot. What is so good about the writing of Rogue is how immersed her story is in relationships and feelings. Yes she is a superhero, but the story that is often told her being a superhero is second to the story. Rogue is first and honestly, that is the way a story should work. Characters first.

The second arc was great. My queer side wanted them to openly state that Blindspot was Rogue's first relationship. It would be great to have her defined as a bi character, that will make me love her more.

I've always loved Rogue, but this was awful. The art in the first ~20% was nice, but the story line was such a letdown. Apparently Rogue's background consists of demons and cults, who knew? Immediate DNF.

Two absolutely amazing stories around Rogue's childhood and her former alliance with brotherhood coming to haunt her in present. This deserves a 4 atleast

Overall, it's a pretty solid read, but #1-6 and #7-12 are distinctly different in how they go about telling a story that delves into Rogue's past. #1-6 ended up being the stronger story and the one I liked more (which surprised me, since I bought this because of the Sunfire developments) but that's not to say #7-12 isn't entertaining, too, but the second half of the book has more plot holes and character motivations that are forced and a bit ridiculous.

Growing up with X Men, mostly from the cartoon and movies, Rogue was one of my favorites next to Night crawler, Gambit, etc, from her cool costume designs and being the most interesting, this sounded like my kind of read. And it was interesting, with the different story arcs and art styles. Pretty good read.

It was interesting to read more about one of my favorite X-Men. The two series were both very unique and helped readers to understand Rogue better and learn more about how she becomes who she is. I think I liked the first series a little better than the second one but they were both interesting reads and kept you wondering what would happen next.

Rogue has always been a favorite character. I enjoyed the story arc and learning more about her past and how it affects her. Wasn't a big fan of the art of the second story arc, but still handled well.

It was ok. I enjoyed the art and most of the stories were ok but this is not a good starting point if you are somewhat unfamiliar with the character.
