SOMEONE’S GOING TO DIE—AND IT COULD BE THE NEW PRIME MINISTER.OR MAYBE KATE'S BEST FRIEND IN THE WORLD!Two politicians and her best friend have the death-predicting auras London architect Kate Benedict can see despite her most fervent wishes. She’s had the dubious gift for a year now, and suddenly there’s no longer any ignoring it.
But the only way to get to the two pols is via her old friend, DCI Clarke; yet her warnings go unheeded. Her frustration builds when her best friend, Anita, refuses to believe in their existence as well — even when one appears over Anita’s boss in the hospital where she works. And then Anita develops her own aura.
A wild chase through seamy and posh London, clever detection, and an intricate plot make this paranormal mystery appealing to cozy and hard-boiled fans alike. In DOUBLE BLIND, the early promise Carrie Bedford showed in THE AURA is not only fulfilled, but even blooms and grows more sure-footed.
Double Blind is sure to delight fans of traditional British murder mysteries as well as anyone who likes female sleuths and international mysteries.
WHO ELSE WILL LIKE IT: Anyone looking for a new, fresh female sleuth, as well as fans of paranormal suspense, traditional (yet not too cozy) stories, contemporary British women detectives like the ones found on the BBC’s ROSEMARY AND THYME and MURDER IN SUBURBIA, and mysteries with a metaphysical twist, like Kay Hooper’s Bishop Files series, Iris Johansen’s THE PERFECT WITNESS, and Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters books.
"Double Blind is a cozy mystery with intense characters who struggle in a world of pharmaceutical intrigue with political twists. Author Carrie Bedford writes with a high suspenseful flair and creates an engaging protagonist, Kate Benedict. Paranormal elements mix with murders, kidnappings, and a dash of romance, all racing through an unusual and satisfying plot. A fast read, well-written, and thoroughly enjoyable."—Paula Cappa, author of The Dazzling Darkness
This is book two in this series. I like the paranormal touch in these murder mysteries. Kate can see other peoples aura' s , sadly she can only see death aura' s. which never tell her the how or why. I like Kate, Josh, and especially a physician named Anita, who is a dear friend.. Visiting the hospital Katie gets a shock , It seems not only Anita, but several doctors at her hospital. also have the danger.Kate dives in to the world of pharmaceutical companies, and all those that surround her friend. The book was well written, with a good mystery, and some nail biting moments. It is not fast paced, nor fast moving,, like several other authors I follow. It took place in London, and I enjoyed that, and it had lots of red herrings so that even near the end you were not quite sure about the master mind , giving the orders. There are gals of romance, but little else. I was a bit shocked about how slow the London police were to respond to emergency situations. Kate, and friends really did most of the investigation. It was a good ending. It was a solid 4 stars.
This is book two in the series. I started this series with reading book for then went back to the beginning and read book one now book two. these books are well written and could be read out of order but reading them in order does give you some insight into Kate's unique gift. This book takes place in London and is a interesting look at medical drug reps. If you like fast-paced action inspired books this is a good one.
Another good story and the character seems more "used" to seeing the auras but she still takes it seriously if it's a friend. Good story but I skipped a bit because it becomes too descriptive. Would read the next book
Double Blind, Kate Benedict paranormal mysteries, Book #2 by Carrie Bedford
As I've stated in my reviews of "The Aura" and "The Scottish Connection," I started reading this series with the 4th book, then decided I liked the main characters enough to jump back to the first book. So, now I've completed the second book in the series (confused yet?). I'll admit that knowing that Kate survives the 4th book does take some of the danger to her out of reading these mysteries, but I'm still enjoying them very much.
One of the things I like about this series has nothing to do with the stories. The publisher, booksBnimble Publishing, has a guarantee for the readers. If a reader finds five verifiable errors, booksBnimble will give your money back, and if you find more than five, BBN will give you a dollar for every error up to twenty, plus they will reproof and remake the book. While even 5 errors in one novel is bad proofing in my opinion, I'm glad to see a publishing company that gives an incentive to the readers to actually notice what they are reading and to report any errors. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who actually holds authors and publishing houses responsible for the errors found in their product.
So, for this episode, Kate goes to a political rally with her roommate from college, Anita. Her friend, Anita, also has an aura, and when Kate visited Anita at the hospital where Anita works, she sees Anita's mentor, Dr. Reid, who has an aura. Anita is a full-time doctor, but is also working as a volunteer on the political campaign of Simon Scott, who is running for Prime Minister. And, of course, Scott, and his financial advisor, Kevin Lewis, both have auras. As she hasn't told Anita about her aura-seeing abilities, she is reluctant to tell her, fearing that her friend's level-headed, just-the-facts, scientific mind would reject Kate as a lunatic. She tells Josh, of course, who encourages her to forget about Reid, Scott and Lewis, and just keep an eye on Anita. But Kate being Kate, she, of course, dives into trying to find out all she can about Dr. Reid, and about Scott and Lewis, while keeping Anita very close at hand. The cases eventually begin to meld one into another as connections between all the parties involved are discovered. But who is after the doctor, Anita, Scott and Lewis? What connection could two pediatric doctors and high-ranking two politicians have? Who will survive and who's auras will win out in the end?
The plotting and pacing are stellar. There are plenty of red herrings and dead ends to keep readers guessing about who are the good guys and who might be the bad guys. The proofing and editing are excellent. I have only two notes. One has to do with something that I found disturbingly true today (2018) as it was in the year the book was published, 2015. It's found very early in the novel, at position 234 on my Kindle: "...Or maybe a shooting, although that's more of an American thing." The second note concerned an idiom that was just worded differently (not incorrectly) than I am used to hearing: #...get on like a house on fire." How I'm used to hearing it put is "like a house afire." The book is set in England, and the differences between wording in UK English and US English make for interesting reading. The only term I really had no idea about, either from knowing the term before or from the context, was the word "skip," as it related to a storage or waste bin.
Characterizations are well-fleshed out and consistent. The story is all told from Kate's POV, so the reader gets to (or is stuck, I guess, depending on how you feel about single character POV) experience the story solely through her perceptions. Settings are well described. I would have liked to know more about the homeless veteran who can see auras that Kate and Josh encountered in the abandoned warehouse. Perhaps that will come in book 3 -- but I was disappointed it wasn't addressed at the end of this book.
In any event, it was a quick, interesting, fun read.
Carrie Bedford – Kate Benedict Bk 2 – Double Blind – Reviewed 12/30/20 – Read 12/27/20
When politics and pharmacy company's mix, things can go deadly, then add in the dancing auras!
Kate’s best friend is a doctor and when her supervisor is suddenly murdered just after Kate spotted an aura over him, Kate confides her ability to her friend. Of course, like all her other friends Anita does not believe it. Again, she goes to her Scotland Yard detective and tells him about the auras. He is trying his best to work with Kate, but it being supernatural he is having a hard time accepting it.
When a threat against Anita occurs then things start to change. Kate is working extremely hard to find out who the killer is, but with no one to help her, she is having a hard time.
And the story begins…
What did I like? This series has me hooked. I love the action and crazy auras. Kate is such an amazing person to be involved in and work as hard as she does to save these people. I could certainly see that it would be hard to ignore it when you know what the outcome will be. The interaction between Kate and her friends is interesting also. I just don’t know what I would do if it would happen to me. What would you do??? Oh! Of course, this is just fiction, but is it?
What will you like? Incredible action, humor, romance, mystery, murders, and don’t forget the auras! The action was increased in this book and the characters are amazing. You won’t want to miss reading this one, as it is fun and certainly interesting. Even though this is fiction, just think about what happens when they do trials for new drugs. There are big pharma monies involved and even the sales reps will be compensated if their drugs are the ones chosen. You can see where it might push someone over the top! An excellent read, this will be another great addition to your library.
This is book two in a bundle "Kate Benedict Cozy British Mysteries Vol 1-4" that Goodreads can't seem to find, but which exists on my Kindle. I guess I'll have to enter each volume separately.
When out running with her friend Anita, Kate sees auras above two politicians they meet. She immediately focuses on how she can help them, but the possibilities seem slim. She also sees the aura above a doctor where Anita works and Anita tells her that he has been acting strangely lately, so she decides they have to help him too. This insistence on 'helping' people she doesn't even know seemed a bit over the top to me, but I suppose it advances the plot and helps to put her in perilous situations. Several deaths and kidnappings occur, all connected to a double blind test of an immunosuppressant drug.
So, if you believe some one close to you, or someone important to the society you live in, is going to die, and you know that you have the potential to change that outcome, although most people wouldn't believe or understand you, would you then do everything possible to prevent their deaths? That's Kate Benedict's problem, having her best friend and a couple of political candidates showing her, via their auras, that they have a short time on this world. As with a lot of supernatural type situations, most people are more than sceptical if advised of the facts. So that leaves the poor girl in a situation of trying to gather enough information to convince the powers that be, that there is a credible threat. It's another entertaining and enthralling tale.
Once again, author Carrie Bedford has gotten me involved as she spins her web of intrigue. Her web caught me and it was hard to stop reading for eating, sleeping, bathroom breaks or even doing some things I'm supposed to do around the house. Kate Benedict is a great character, and sometimes you feel like you should help her, even though you know that's impossible. Well done to the author. Keep doing what you do so I can keep doing what I do. Your work is greatly appreciated!
Liking this series more than expected. Not just because of the aura plot but the realistic characters. The protagonists are not superficial and have their own feelings and insecurities. Not portraying a all perfect, strong and perfect protagonist this series shows how would in reality this would be. As fictitious it could be that realistic it seems, a reason why I am continuing this series. With newer characters and older characters blended together it is as if we are watching the life as it goes by coming across all types of people and experiences.
Kate must deal with the fact that her best friend is in immediate danger of losing her life, along with a prominent English politician and one of his sidekicks. The way she approaches warning both these folks and the authorities of the danger gives us a tale with heart, sass and compassion leavened with just enough lightheadedness to keep us invested in the outcome. Recommended.
I have become hooked on this series after reading the first two novels. The idea of seeing an Aura to predict an imminent death is a great premise for the series. Add to that, Kate has a good deal out curiosity and ability to link clues to find out who the murderer is. It's fun to have the stories take place on London and outlying area. I have really enjoyed reading Double Blind and look forward the next novel about Kate.
Kate has seen more auras. This time it's two men in politics, one running to be the Prime Minister. She doesn't tell them about the auras but warns them of danger. Then she reconnects with her old girlfriend been working in Boston. Kate sees an aura on Anita's boss Dr. Reid . She tells Anita about the aura but she doesn't believe Kate. As usual Kate tries to save them. Really like this series.
As a murder mystery with a psychic twists to it, I have to say I became addicted to this series very fast. The author has a clean and crisp way of writing that keeps you enthralled throughout the story. The characters are exciting and well written and the interaction between all of them is very well done. I think anyone would enjoy these books whether they were murder buffs or not.
I am enjoying the series this one had some intriguing twists. Its seems like so much is going on and Kate is very unlucky and so are her friends. The idea of being able to see that someone is going to die is interesting and i can't imagine how annoying it is to know someone is going to die but not know how or why. Then blindly trying to change things so it doesn't come to pass. I read this story very quickly and it kept my interest.
Kate and Friend Anita wind up in the same murder attempts.
Kate sees Auras on the new Prime Minister to be and reacts with her normal attempts to warn him and to get the cops to follow up with better protection. Then her friend Anita has her boss killed at the hospital where she is a resident. Things go terribly wrong and the murders and attempted murder tie together and put them in jeopardy of being next. Again great read
This story pulled it . all.together marking an exciting and real Ostrich experience for the reader. So!e of the turns the story took were.more understandable further on in the story
Over all.I think that.you will fully enjoy your.choosing this story even weeks (lots of them, ) after you have to finishing your reading is a long time over.
This is a nice quick easy read but I didn't enjoy this book as much as the 1st book the series "Aura". The story line was a little convoluted and hard to believe. However, I do like the the premise that those having an aura need help. If you've watched/read the "Fugitive" the story line is very similar.
I read the Aura and was eager to read Double Blind. It more than met my expectations as I rushed thru each page to get to the climax. Carrie Bedford, you hit the ball out of the park with this series. I spotted few errors, so do not notate them. Good proofreading. I will be waiting for the next book. 😊
I have enjoyed this book as much as Aura. These books have kept me guessing through all the twists and turns. The author is descriptive in the way that allows the reader to picture everything. I would recommend this book as a stand alone but best read after Aura.
Mate gets herself in all kinds of predicaments, she has to save her friends. She just can't help herself. I like all the twists and turns and it's very easy to follow many side character's.
You know some will die, just not which ones for sure.
Kate sees auras that predict that someone will die. She finds it distressing and wants to save them but not.knowing when or how it will happen makes it hard to do. A well written suspense thriller.
Intrigue, bomb scares, mayhem, kidnapping and mystery galore in this brilliant read. As auras increase, death is imminent but Kate is determined to save her good friend Anita from its clutches in this story of friendship, honor and bravery.
I wish I knew how to do a word count on my kindle to see how many times the word tea is mentioned. Tea is like a character in the book. Besides that just didn’t like it - too many unrealistic scenarios in addition to the main character’s ability. Won’t finish series.
This is an interesting story about auras and drug trials. Kate has taken time from her job to recover after having realized her boss was a criminal in the first story. She is catching up with a friends when she sees the aura over Scott a politician.
Easy entertainment, very similar to the first book: Kate sees an aura, knows one or more of those persons, tries to change the outcome and puts herself in danger with the villains. Sort of same modus operandi, just different persons.
A lot going on in this novel. It was hard to keep up. I was disappointed that some characters from the first novel were not picked up again in the second one, but then again the lead character had no time
