Mark Waid is an American comic book writer widely known for shaping modern superhero storytelling through influential runs on major characters at both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Raised in Alabama, he developed an early fascination with comic books, particularly classic stories featuring the Legion of Super-Heroes, whose imaginative scope and sense of legacy would later inform his own writing. He first entered the comics industry during the mid 1980s as an editor and writer for the fan magazine Amazing Heroes, before publishing his first professional comic story in Action Comics. Soon afterward he joined DC Comics as an editor, contributing to numerous titles and helping shape projects across the company. After leaving editorial work to focus on writing, Waid gained widespread recognition with his long run on The Flash, where he expanded the mythology of the character and co-created the youthful speedster Impulse. His reputation grew further with the celebrated graphic novel Kingdom Come, created with artist Alex Ross, which imagined a future DC Universe shaped by generational conflict among superheroes. Over the years he has written many prominent series, including Captain America, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Superman: Birthright, bringing a balance of optimism, character depth, and respect for comic book history to each project. Waid has also collaborated with notable artists and writers on major ensemble titles such as Justice League and Avengers, while contributing ideas that helped clarify complex continuity within shared superhero universes. Beyond mainstream superhero work, he has supported creator owned projects and experimental publishing models, including the acclaimed series Irredeemable and Incorruptible, which explored moral ambiguity within the superhero genre. He later took on editorial leadership roles at Boom Studios, guiding creative direction while continuing to write extensively. In subsequent years he expanded his involvement in publishing and digital storytelling, helping launch online comics initiatives and advocating for new distribution methods for creators. His work has earned numerous industry awards, including Eisner and Harvey honors, reflecting both critical acclaim and enduring popularity among readers. Throughout his career Waid has remained a passionate student of comic book history, drawing on decades of storytelling tradition while continually encouraging innovation within the medium. His influence extends across generations of readers and creators, and his stories continue to shape the evolving language of superhero comics around the world today through enduring characters imaginative narratives and thoughtful reinventions of familiar myths within popular culture and modern graphic storytelling traditions.
I still have a Riverdale hangover, so here I am trying to finish the new Archie series I've started. I've been reading Archie comics for as long as I can remember and this new reencarnation of his story is definitely refreshing. I also love how they use previous stories and spin it to something more modern, like the #lipstick incident, which was so hilarious.
Also, I did notice though, how much this run reminds me of Riverdale. I hate researching so I'm not sure if Riverdale was based on this run of Archie or something, but there were very slight similarities. Definitely reading more of this now.
If there was one thing I would criticize about this issue, it is the change of the illustrator. I loved Fiona Staples and her art, and I wish they would have stayed with her.
ooooooo so that's what the #lipstickincident is all about haha! I hope to see more of Veronica in the next issues because I really like her! I love her sassiness :) sorry #betchie fans...
I'm not a huge fan of the art. I prefer Fiona Staples' work :/
The #LipstickIncident was a big letdown. All this build-up for it to be something amazing awful like Archie cheating or something, then - in reality - it turns out to just be Betty throwing a childish fit and smearing some on his face, because he doesn't like her trying to become someone she really isn't.
First favorite from the series! I'm finally liking the story. The Lipstick Incident reveal was a make or break kind of a deal, and it ended up being perfect. The one page with Archie being the natural klutz that he is, while texting, was adorable. No hatred for Veronica yet, something tells me, she's going to help certain good friends patch things up. Can't wait to read the next issue!
#LipstickIncident is finally revealed and it was NOT what I expected. Ohh poor Betty (and stupid Archie) :( I will forever ship Betty & Archie! #GoAwayVeronica
Okay, first of all, what gives with ARCHIE COMICS giving me feelings? Like, dude. What? I wasn't ready to hurt. Second of all, WE FINALLY KNOW WHAT THE #LIPSTICKINCIDENT IS. Oh. My. God. I have feels.
The #LipstickIncident is revealed & I found Betty exaggerating & over in this issue :/ I kinda agree with Archie for the first time here.. This incident is not that big to breakup with somebody... :/
Jughead may be the only intelligent character in this series...
Ah, finally we discover the lipstick incident. What is it that broke up Betty and Archie, who were apparently best friends from childhood and dating for a long time? Betty let some mean girls neg her, force her into a makeover, and treat her like trash then got mad when Archie said he didn't like that she wasn't behaving like herself... after she had already made HIM promise not to change. That's it. That's all. (You'll have to read for yourself to see how lipstick is involved.) Archie did literally nothing wrong, Betty went psycho mode on him, and they broke up.
Can we please get a sane girl for poor Archie? He deserves better than Veronica or Betty either one.
THAT was the #LipstickIncident?! I'm a little disappointed, but overall the story is progressing nicely. I always feel so sorry for Betty--she's constantly getting the short end of the stick. Still, I love how the story is building, the characters and their personalities are intact, and although I preferred the art from the first couple of issues it's still nice. Good read!
I need to commend the writers again for taking these classic characters and making them relevant in this day and age. The history between Archie and Betty was very believable. And it added a lot of layers to these characters who I have previously viewed as two dimensional.
The graphics were a major let down from the last three books. Apart from that, the story continues to enthrall but it was in no way a compensation for the loss of visual charm.
5 Stars! ★★★★★ Veronica is a rich socialite who managed to wrap Archie around her carefully manicured finger. Finally, the story behind Archie and Betty’s breakup is explained and it was nothing of what I expected. ‘Friends’ are the root of all evil when it comes to relationships.
I enjoy these comics so far and the retelling of the Archie betty veronica and jughead adventures. They feel short but if you're a fan of the Archie comics and morso the Riverdale show you will like these comjcs
The art change was really noticeable and irritated me at times. Especially upsetting in the fact that we find out about the #lipstickincident in this one.
It was pretty good because Archie told us what the #lipstickincedent WAS. SO IT WASN'T A VERY GOOD MORNING AT WORK TODAY SO I DON'T LIKE WORK FOR NOW ON ™
