Zdarsky and Henderson return with the next issue of the all-new Jughead! Things continue to be amiss at Riverdale High as Coach Clayton gets replaced by a tough-as-nails, take-no-prisoner Phys-Ed teacher! Can he be stopped or will Jughead have to become… physically active? The answer lies in the far future…
Chip Zdarsky is a Canadian comic book artist and journalist. He was born Steve Murray but is known by his fan base as Chip Zdarsky, and occasionally Todd Diamond. He writes and illustrates an advice column called Extremely Bad Advice for the Canadian national newspaper National Post's The Ampersand, their pop culture section's online edition. He is also the creator of Prison Funnies and Monster Cops.
Jughead Jones is back and better than ever! In Jughead #2, everyone's favourite is in for some serious trouble--detention! Gasp! Howl! The horror! In my humble opinion, Jughead #2 is even better than the first installment of the newly rebooted Riverdale favourite and as usual is totally giggle worthy. Can I say that without sounding lame? Definitely not. Am I going to say it anyways? Duh.
Once more, the new Jughead combines new and old traits together; tying generations of fans up quite nicely. I found this installment to be more humorous than the previous which is saying something, since the last one was pretty damn funny! Of course, I am biased--as you know, Jughead Jones is one of my favourite comic characters of all-time. In #2, the artwork is on point and the characters we know and love are just as fun as they've always been. I couldn't get enough of it!
And I'm not going to lie, I totally cackled during the scene in detention when Jughead and Dilton were talking. "Your dad's name is Harvard?" Dilton? Hello, Dilton? (I actually wanted to add: is this thing on? To this entire scene. I was giggly, I guess.) The way that this scene is portrayed is classic Archie all the way and as mundane as it seems, it just made me smile like a doofus. Or like a Jughead who just spot a burger--whichever.
The second issue of the Jughead comics. In this issue, Jughead's friends, who have all been getting detention lately as a result of the tough new teachers that the new principal hired, discover that he alone has been avoiding detention. Yet the very next day, Jughead unavoidably faces his very first detention ever. He decides to take a bit of a nap, and enters yet again into a dream interlude, this time as a time cop, defeating evil. This dream gives him a fantastic idea of how to avoid the detention that seems inevitable after the next class period, but will it backfire on him? You'll have to wait and see. Another great issue, I love Jughead! His brilliant schemes and bending of the rules, not to mention his funny interludes, are a joy to read. Looking forward to next issue as well!
Ok, seriously?! This new Principal and Coach are relentless. I really want to see them get taken down somehow. This is insane! Blackmailing a student, and planting a weapon on him. Unacceptable!!
The one bright spot I did like was the Time Police storyline though. It was a fun departure from the rest of what was going on.
The art again was ok nothing special. This was a interesting issue. Im not sure what direction there taking with this series.Apart from that this was a good issue. It wasn't as funny as the first but it was more interesting.
Jughead and the Time Police are the best thing to happen to this series. I hope they continue letting January McAndrews come back to whisk Jughead away. I am shipping JugJan so hard!
The artwork sadly pulls me away from the storyline a lot. I get trying to create a new and fresh look, which I found to be well done in the new Archie comics, but the artwork in the new Jughead comics is deterring enough that I'm not enjoying the stories. To be blunt; the artwork in these comics is just really ugly and doesn't enhance the storyline at all. The only thing good is the older comic included at the end of each book.
