These recordings are from a rare and inspiring five day retreat held in 1982. On these recordings we hear the wonderful Stephen Levine interacting with Ram Dass and speaking on his own. These two masterful teachers explore a deeply personal and inspirational topic. With meditaions, questions and answers, and brilliant lecture, this program will transform your view of life and also of death.
Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), was one of America's most beloved spiritual figures, making his mark on the world giving teachings and promoting loving service, harmonious business practices, and conscious care for the dying. His spirit has been a guiding light for four generations, carrying millions along on the journey, helping free them from their bonds as he has worked his way through his own.
Fear of pain is the greatest inhibitor of growth. We grow least when we are most in control. Yet, our whole life is built on maintaining control. We cling to familiarity, like animals finally able to be free from a cage, but deciding to stay trapped.
Life is an ongoing experiment in and for truth. Resistance to pain is a holding on to pain. What we call pain is actually fear. In the same way we reward dogs for doing tricks, we reward children for being in pain. The nature of being in a body is being in pain. Even in the most comfortable posture/position, we will eventually need to move to alleviate pain. If one was to define hell in one word it would be “resistance” - all resistance is a form of our own self-created hell.
Cancer may indeed be the only gift possible for the person who has everything. We must integrate all parts of our being to live in peace. Consciousness is able to grow beyond the myths, structures and institutions organizing us to comprehend the interconnectedness of us all. What matters is how it’s manifested. Enjoying something and needing something for one’s happiness are completely separate forms of identification.
Is what you do with your time as important as how you do what you do? What your mind gets caught in is your spiritual work. The only rule to spirituality is to keep listening to and acting through the heart. Loss of sensual experience is often the greatest obstacle to true spirituality. However, as one ages in only age, sensual pleasures begin to fade, creating a great opening for coming to God.
Some real gems of insight here. Strangely, I actually found Stephen and Luke’s contribution more powerful than that of Ram Dass. I think their work with dying people is extremely rich and powerful. Wonderful overall listen though, with some great meditations. Ram Dass certainly brings the humanity to the spiritual journey which is why I really like his work. I highly recommend Stephens book, “dying into life and death”, if you want to dive deeper into his work with dying.
Recording is a little hard to listen to as far as sound quality goes. Stick with it. I got a lot out of these lectures. Grateful this is available as a resource.
