Since making his professional debut as a playwright in 2011, Checkpoint Theatre’s Associate Artist Joel Tan has received widespread recognition and acclaim for his lyricism, wit and elegant mastery of language. His ability to craft dialogue in all its complex nuances, lilts and milieux has established him as an important voice of his generation and one of its most exciting playwrights.
The seven plays featured in “Joel Tan: Plays Volume 1″ capture the intricacies of the modern world with stillness and intelligence, marrying innovative narrative structures with an emotionally authentic core. This collection is edited by Lucas Ho and features an interview with the playwright by Huzir Sulaiman.
honestly an amazing set of plays with only a few real misses. Tan manages to avoid all the things that annoy me about Singapore theatre - its tendency to over focus on giant, political issues and ignore the lives of the ordinary Singaporean.
loved this! i laughed, i felt like crying, and wished i could watch it on stage. there’s nothing i can add that hasn’t already been addressed in the interview at the back. i also wish this could be taught in schools instead of the CCE ‘i love you, you love me, we’re a happy family’ drivel. like, that is 100% not representative of the existing body of literature. when was the last time you met a filial teenager? i can’t rmb. but when was the last time you met a tortured queer young person in singapore? all the time, in my experience.
