So, I'll get this out of the way first. I'm a rail fan. And first and foremost, I'm a fan of the old D&RGW. The Rio Grande. THE railroad of the Rockies. So, yeah, I'm biased. But even if I wasn't biased, I would still give this book 5 stars for the railroad photography alone. Mike Danneman is a seminal talent in North American Railroad photography, and some of his best work is featured here. In addition, you get stories. Lots and lots of railroading stories told to Mike by the people who lived them. If you ever wanted to know what a day-in-the-life of a railroader was like, you will enjoy these stories. And yeah, Rio Grande 5371. The last of the famous Rio Grande "Tunnel Motors" to see service in its original stomping grounds. Mike does a great job documenting its last days of mainline service in 2008. And for those curious about 5371, it now sits in the collection of the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden, Utah, still proudly wearing its black and aspen gold paint.
