Following Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s Corps of Discovery as they navigate the muddy Missouri River and begin a great adventure, this activity book is set against the background of the vast North American continent. It takes children from President Jefferson’s vision of an exploratory mission across a continent full of unique plants and animals through their dangerous and challenging journey into the unknown to the expedition’s triumphant return to the frontier town of St. Louis. Twenty-one activities bring to life the Native American tribes they encountered, the plants and animals they discovered, and the camping and navigating techniques they used. A glossary of terms and listings of Lewis and Clark sites, museums, and related websites round out this comprehensive activity book.
This is a very complete, well written book about Lewis and Clark. It is written in a great way to appeal to children 9+ who enjoy stories about history, travel and science.
I don't know what the book is like in hand, but the Kindle version of this is most definitely not going to work for kids. There are pages and pages of blocks of text with a few pictures interspersed.
Beside that, it is a very pro-colinizing type book, painting L &C in a near-perfect light, barely mentioning York or that Sacagawea was a captive and not even talking about how she was forced to "marry" her husband. I don't think great detail is needed, but it doesn't read as a factual account, but rather a selected- factual account.
The Lewis and Clark expedition is explored in this informational text made for kids. The details of the expedition such as animals or people the explorers came across are highlighted and given even more detail than most stories about the Lewis and Clark expedition. The book also contains activities for kids to do on their own or with others such as a teacher, a parent, or a friend. The material will come to life when the kids explore these activities, and the expedition will be more than a piece of history.
I love this series of books...they are written for elementary age children and are not only filled with amazing facts, stories, illustrations, etc. but each chapter or section has different activities that you do together that help illustrate or bring to life the events you have been talking about. We have had an amazing adventure with this book. Easy activities but extremely memorable experiences!
This is an excellent book, don't let the title fool you. As an adult, I relished reading it each night after the kids went to bed. The Lewis and Clark expedition has it all: science, adventure, mystery, history, intrigue. This book does a good job offering a sample of each. I borrowed it from the library but plan to buy it to use for curriculum in the future. I also plan to sample other Herbert books!
It is interesting to learn the Lewis and Clark expedition. It must be exciting to find new things, such as animals, plants, and places. Most tribes are nice and helpful. On the other hand,it is very hard and difficult to go through unknown places, sometimes no food or attacked by bears or some tribes, and mosquitoes.
We did our PTLS on the Westward Expansion with an emphasis on Lewis and clark this book is a great resource has pictures and activities that can be modified for grade levels and age levels.
