Princess Sitnalta has been living happily ever after with Queen Aud and King Gerald as her adoptive parents, enjoying peace and prosperity in her world. Her growing friendship with the mysterious Prince Navor leads her on a journey to visit his island kingdom. While there, she receives the horrible news that her kingdom has been stolen and that cruel King Wilhelm is responsible. But taking the kingdom is not enough for King Wilhelm. He wants Sitnalta as his Queen and will stop at nothing until he has her, even if it means releasing Sitnalta’s imprisoned father, the evil dethroned King Supmylo to aid in his quest. Far from home and unsure of whom to trust, Sitnalta must find a way to save her kingdom and herself, and return her beloved Aud and Gerald to their rightful thrones.

The Kingdom Thief is a highly imaginative thrill ride. The twists and turns in this book are numerous and very well placed. There truly is no resting as something else is always just about to happen.
The main plot dovetails easily with the first book, dealing with a magic coin. The issues derived from the use of that coin are well thought out and consistent, with most major characters concerned about misusing the coin again in the future.
The author has a very good grasp of the heroine's inner feelings and is very good at painting Sitnalta's growing feelings for Prince Navor. Its done with style and grace, but with more than enough moral character that the parents of younger readers will not be upset at the ideas of love presented in the work.
The only downside for me was a technical issue dealing with the author showing us the inner feelings of different characters within the same scene.
Overall, a better book than the first in my view and I'm eager to see where the leaping off point will be for the third installment.
The Kingdom Thief, the next installment of the Sitnalta Series
The Kingdom Thief by Alisse Lee Goldenberg delivers a compelling story as the princess’ quest for love is hijacked when the usurper Wilhelm, a common criminal, becomes king.
This is the second book in the award-winning Sitnalta series. Although the story is written with Middle Grade to Young Adult readers in mind, it is sure to entertain readers of all ages. This instant classic is a fairytale fantasy chocked full of intrigue and magic. There are princes and princesses, kings and queens with one quirky wizard tossed in for good measure.
The story picks up a short time after the concluding events of Sitnalta, the debut novel of this series. With her father, the former tyrannical King Supmylo, imprisoned in the castle dungeons and King Gerald and Queen Aud (our heroine’s former governess) rule both Colonodona and Sarrin, King Gerald’s realm. The peace and happiness in the unified kingdom are soon shattered when a thief steals the powerful, magical coin from its vault deep beneath the castle and wishes himself king.
Continuing in the tradition of Sitnalta, Goldenberg demonstrates her skill as a consummate storyteller, honed and refined over a catalogue that ranges from epic fantasy to zombie thrillers. Here, she has constructed a highly imaginative tale supported with strong messages of family, loyalty, and undying love. Through her due diligence and the support of Prince Navor, his father and mother, the King Parven and Queen Kika the Island Kingdoms, Sitnalta must find a way to defeat King Wilhelm and restore her world to the way it was before. This tales’ tapestry tale is woven around a heroic fight against seemingly impossible odds. In the end, there is a strong suggestion of the sequel, an upcoming third book of the series that hints of a new wrinkle, a past relationship between the wizard Kralc and Sitnalta’s mother, Learsi.
In case you are pondering the origin of the strange names of the characters of this series and a way to remember them, try this first. Some, though not all, are common names or those of mythical places that have been spelled backwards. Others were suggested by the author’s children or other relatives.
The Kingdom thief is a delightful Young Adult Fantasy by Alisse Lee Goldenberg. All in all, it is a fun and upbeat adventure but it starts with a pretty depressing scenario. What happens if your parents are terrible and find that you and everyone around you are happier and much better off with your new adoptive parents? I did not read the first book in this series so I don’t know how this situation started but this story is complete in and of itself. Our heroine is a princess enjoying a great life in the palace but evil forces are conspiring to take back the throne. The Kingdom Thief is the story of that attempt and it is an interesting tale.
The characters in The Kingdom Thief are well written and it is very easy to like the good guys and hate the bad guys. The personalities and perspectives are pretty much black and white. Alisse Lee Goldenberg is especially adept at portraying young blooming romance as well as contrasting the way good, decent people think and behave as opposed to the twisted thinking of the bad guys. With an entire kingdom at stake, there are a lot of people depending on Princess Sitnalta to grow up fast. The plot is good, the setting is lovely and I enjoyed escaping into a kingdom that at times reminded me of the very best of the fairy tales my mother used to read to me. I liked The Kingdom Thief. I think most people will. Especially teenage girls.
I've been looking for a YA series set in a world that rivals Tamora Pierce and Goldenberg has created just that. I was immediately drawn into this next installment of Sitnalta's story with the expertly executed tension sprinkled beneath rich descriptions of exotic locations. With this story introducing a budding romance, I found myself rooting for Sitnalta in more ways than one. I'm eagerly anticipating the next installment of this great series!
A wonderful follow up to the first book! Sitnalta shines again as a brave and wonderful main character. Another excellent plot as well, and an unexpected solution to the problem - which just makes it more interesting!
A no spoiler review. Second in the Sinalta series, with the adventure continuing. Well written and a good story. I look forward to the next book in the series.
