‘Lovejoy has proven himself a master storyteller.’ - Clive Cussler For the new post-Soviet Commonwealth of Independent States, it was supposed to be a historic event and moment of great celebration. But when the launch of the new A2e rocket goes terribly wrong, panic grips the entire world - because this rocket has a nuclear reactor on board. From the moment the A2e crashes, that nuclear reactor is on a countdown to meltdown. It will reach a supercritical state within a matter of days. And so, even as the A2e plummets to the very depths of the ocean, the desperate race to retrieve it begins. Failure will result in catastrophic damage to Earth and all life upon it. Yet the rocket has plunged so deep into the ocean that it seems almost impossible to find, let alone salvage. Enter Dane Brande, maverick but world-leading oceanographer who, with his highly-skilled, international team of experts and cutting edge equipment, may be the world’s best, possibly only, hope of salvation. But will Brande take on the job and if he does, will he survive it? Against a background of riots and international rage, interested parties converge on the sea above the crash site. A rogue environmentalist, whose ambitions are unclear even to himself, threatens to derail the operation. Newspaper reporters circle and protesters gather as the world looks on. Soon after the end of the Soviet era, the Russians and the Americans are once more racing each other to an achievement - that of raising the rocket - but in this new world order and time of threat, do they actually need to co-operate? To what extent are they willing and able to do that? Meanwhile, Brande must keep his own demons at bay and hold his nerve long enough to find and retrieve the rocket. If he succeeds he will save the world from catastrophe and secure the future of his ground-breaking research and diving salvage company… But will Brande succeed or will he, like others, lose his life in the search for the lost rocket and its terrifying cargo? BELLE CHASSE is a mystery that explores the sea, and TRIGGER HAPPY climbs into the sky. NOW YOU DON'T chases down Romanov treasures in Albuquerque.
I quite liked the story. However, I am slightly disappointed that over the many years this book existed, basic errors were not edited out by now. Example "M14 Tomcats". Or using "Cannot" instead of "can" a few times. Also a few mistakes with the names as who said what to whom. But I will try another book
Not a moment of rest. This story moves from beginning to end with nonstop action. Intrigue, action, a bit of romance, politics, and foreign policy. What can go wrong?
Good storytelling, based on piss poor research and totally BS science! I got to Chapter 6 before I had to call it quits! I only gave it a 1, because I couldn't give it a Zero!
I have read many sea stories and this is among the best. Although a little farfetched in places, it keeps the plot moving. Bouncing from one place to another keeps the mind active. All the Russian names are some time hard to follow. All that said, a good book.
1.5 stars, being generous. Wanting to DNF, trying not to. Bored. Way too many characters, too much needless detail that doesn't further the story. If you are wanting a good sub book, look elsewhere.
Finally finished. The writing was good. Like so many books I've read the last few years, it didn't get better until over half way through. Strip out the overdone details, some of the repetition, narrow down the characters. A hundred pages less would have made the difference between a 2 star and a 3 star.
This book has everything you might have been seeking, international conflict, total chaos, battling nations seeking total control of a situation none had ever imagined. Then comes the heroes and heroines of the action taking control on the scene in the south Pacific. How that all comes together is Lovejoy's writing skills, which you'll find are the best. Thanks for another great read.
Is Mr Lovejoy fat, ugly or something? Seems concerned about the appearance of others, but I've only read 10 books with 15 cliches. Reads better than most of his work.
A failed Russian satellite launch deposits a nuclear reactor in the depths of the Pacific Ocean south of Midway Island. Dane Brande and his team of oceanographic experts are asked to assist in the location and recovery of the reactor which may be going supercritical. They have the equipment and the know-how. They also have interference from U. S. Navy brass who want to run the operation, members of the media who want put out information, real or imagined, and approaching severe weather. What they don't have is a lot of information from the Russians regarding the design of the reactor and its control systems. Brande puts his company, Marine Visions Unlimited, on the line to try and solve the problem. With help from an unexpected source, the reactor is located. Now all they have to do is get it to the surface, from a depth of 6,500 meters.
