My original Whispered Pain audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer. Whispered Pain was an entertaining and thrilling short story. The beginning was mystifying. I did not know what was going on at all, as the first few chapters were told from different characters' points of view. It was rather intriguing. Then, bit by bit, the story came together magically, and everything got tied up wonderfully in the end. The way Ashley Fontainne weaved it all together was one of the things I really enjoyed about the story. The ending was rather satisfying. It is very difficult to say much about the content itself because it could easily spoil the plot. It all begins with a woman in a coma. She can hear people talking. Basically, Whispered Pain is a very twisted story about sweet revenge that is full of devious characters and convoluted turns. There is deception, greed, betrayal and several deaths. It was quite amazing how much was put into 3 hours of listening. It makes you think about trust and family ties. The narration by Andrea Emmes was very good. She used a variety of voices and had excellent pacing and intonation. She was very pleasant to listen to. There were no issues with the production quality. Whispered Pain is definitely worthwhile listening to if you are looking for a short, suspenseful and very original story. This was my first book by Ashley Fontainne and I would certainly try others. Ashley Fontainne is an award winning author and I have read a lot of her books. I won this back in 2015 and shame on me for waiting so long to share such a fabulous story.
A snow storm…don’t ya just love a story that starts out like that. Bad things happen during storms in novels. LOL Ya know, like when the town rolls up the sidewalks like it’s the end of the world, telling all to go home and stay there. Ashley Fontainne has a way with words and her writing brings the scenes to life in vivid detail, making me feel as if I am there.
She adds the details to her characters personalities that bring them to life, adding those bits and pieces that make you feel empathy, fear, and the need to save them. I feel like I walk in their world, wearing their shoes.
The devastation caused by the death of Angie’s sister ruined her family, created a distance from everyone. Death, a loss so deep they can’t recover.
I knew from the first sentence that Whispered Pain would be another awesome read. I had a feeling I knew what was coming and as the horror comes full on to Angie, my suspicions are confirmed. I can’t help but smile with wicked glee in anticipation. Ashley Fontainne can take me to the lowest low, a despair so deep I don’t have the strength to fight it…Until…a spark ignites, a fire of determination, a rage that comes to life, as if it is a physical thing. I raged with her.
WTF Who died and made these men God?
The plot is filled with twists and turns that kept a smile on my face as if it was a present to open through Ashley Fontainne’s words. I love that she brought the story full circle.
This is only a short story but it definitely packs a punch! So much happens in such a short space of time!!
Initially, I wasn't sure what was happening at the start but the author weaved a thrilling tale of betrayal and murder that comes together at the end. It starts with a patient in a coma and she hears and feels everything happening around her. She tells her story of how she came to be there and in it we see a tale of deception, murder, betrayal and love. It's a chilling tale but oh so gripping!!!
Ashley Fontainne, has once again has cast her magic on me. This book just goes to show what a strong writer she is. It may only be over 3 hrs long but it feels like a full book. I was absolutely hooked the whole way through and didn't see the big reveal coming!!
I don't think I can say anything else about Andrea Emmes that I haven't said in previous books narrated by her. She rocks as a narrator and is one of a few who I'll buy any book read by her!!
*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affects my thoughts.*
First time reading from the author. When first start to read the story, you get into peoples heads on what their thinking. Well not all true thoughts. I kept thinking a zombie plague would hit, or other ideas I had that might have happened. I never saw the twist and turns the author started throwing at me, coming. When it did, I was like Wow! I was blown away and still can’t believe the ending. Loved it and hope to read more from the author.
The beginning of Whispered Pain was absolutely stellar and pulled me in immediately.
" What does it mean to be alive? It's an age-old conundrum with various answers. Some are universal. To touch, taste, smell, hear and feel...
...What one person considers living may be the stuff of nightmares to another, but in the end, it's all about breathing. Blood flow... Heartbeats..."
This idea of the main character existing in some sort of black hole with no sense of self or even life or death was very intriguing to me. The entire first chapter, entitled "Questions" was beautifully written, darkly mysterious, and set the bar high for the rest of the book.
Sadly, it all went downhill from there.
This ended up being I suppose what you would call a "thriller", and it was fast paced and suspenceful, just like a thriller ought to be, but the more I read on the more far fetched and completely silly it got. I try to see past little details that are totally unrealistic and would never work in real life because hello, this is fiction, but there comes a certain point where things get laughably ridiculous and I throw my hands up in surrender. One example (out of many) was when the main character has her cousin pose as her neurologist by wearing scrubs and a white coat. Her husband never notices that it's cousin Kevin in the white coat, which made me think the husband was unaware of this cousin's existence. But no, the husband sees this cousin the very next day and knows him very well as cousin Kevin and never once realizes that he was the "doctor" from the day before. I just can't see past things like that... Kind of like on Disney movies where there's a masquerade ball and no one recognizes eachother because there's a tiny mask covering their eyes. Even five-year-old me called BS on that one.
If it wasn't for that really great first chapter and the way I was drawn into the story from the start, I would have to give this a two star rating at best--but the beginning really was so good, so: ☆☆☆
This was actually pretty good. It was definitely suspenseful and the plot was entertaining. There were a few things that could have been explained better, and one or two plot holes, but overall it was good.
"Revenge is Mine" she said! Started this book in the wee morning hours and finished it in one setting. I could not nor did I want to put it down! It's diabolical but believable. I truly believe there are things like this that can happen to unsuspecting people in their lives. One of the best unlimited kindle books i have read! I will be reading more of this author's books. Great job Ashley Fontainne! A++++++++
You’re drawn into the story immediately, in a confusing fashion, that turns out to be the crux of the story. A well written story that leaves no details out. It was shorter than I thought it would be, but that made it a quick read. Only wish there would have been a little more lead up before descending into the depths of the story, a little more build up to the thick of the plot. Overall, it was a very good read.
Stick figures moving through a shallow plot with no subtlety or mystery. It is what it is. The husband is too dumb (?) to recognize Kevin at the grave? The cousin and aunt puppets? totally unrealistic, and neither the characters nor the storyline was fleshed out enough for a full-length novel, yet it didn't really adhere to the structure of a short story, other than it was not lengthy.
I didn't know what to expect when I chose to read this book. It has twist after twist which really held my interest. If you are looking for a good, quick read Whispered Pain is a great choice.
Short story that reads like a complete book. The pages move fast but are complete with a stellar characters and story. This story takes off from the first page and remains that way until the very end. I'm in awe of this author's work!
Gave it 4 stars, because I had a problem wrapping my mind around who the villain turned out to be. It was well written, and I think most people will enjoy the book.
It was ok. I knew that the husband was the murderer. He was too sweet. I didn't like him. It was quite boring in spots. I had to force myself to read it again. I wouldn't recommend it.

Different book easy to read, crime and love story in one very short story but lots of twists. Betrayers, family problems, don't want to give away main jist. give it a try.
I know this is fiction, but the story still needs to be realistic. I have to believe it could happen. And I didn't. Not at all. I'll do my best to clarify my reasons without giving any spoilers.
One main and pivotal character does a complete turnaround in personality, with absolutely no previous hint of malice. The 'revelation' as to this person's true feelings is totally unrealistic. This character has a POV part, so we're in this person's head prior to the switch, yet not once do we get any sense of the true personality until things start unraveling. Then suddenly this person is completely evil, without even a hint of the previous personality. No person can appear to be kind and loving for a decade, then suddenly get caught and dissolve into a stereotype psychopath with wave of a hand.
Then there's the whole hospital scene and what happens there. All I can say here is that I don't ever want to be a patient in a hospital where a random person can so easily impersonate a doctor on staff, and then carry out major duties, without being questioned by a soul.
I also didn't believe Angie could so easily convince family members to do what was done at the end. Essentially, every character in the story was a sociopath.
The only scenes I actually enjoyed were those when Angie was unconscious, as with the snippet used for the book's description.
Wow, just wow. This story is exciting and oh so twisted! It had me on the edge of my seat listening to how it leads to the end of the story. In my wildest dreams I couldn't have guessed what was really happening! This book was far better than what I thought it was going to be about. Kudos to the author who has the inventive and devious imagination! For awhile, I couldn't even tell which side was the good guy. I do agree with the heroine though... revenge is sweet! This book really has me wondering just how much can we hear in a coma?
The author, Ashley Fontainne had me gripping the arms of my chair for awhile. The suspense in this book is awesome! The narrator, Andrea Emmes does a fantastic job delivering this book to us. I loved the voices used for the characters. The emotions in the voices were incredible (especially when the heroine was unconscious).

First time I have read anything by this author. A very short story read on my Kindle. Angie is over 40, pregnant and married to Drake. She is worried that her baby may have medical problems, like a sister who had Down's Syndrome and died. During a very bad snowstorm, she goes into labor. Drake insists on driving to the hospital, and gets in an accident, resulting in Angie being in a coma. Her baby dies. While in her coma, believing that she can't hear him, Drake tells her that he never wanted a child, doesn't love her, and staged it all so that she and the baby would die. However, she does remember when she comes out of her coma, and plans a revenge on him, aided by some family members.
So let me start by saying this book isn't terrible. I've not read any other books by this author so I didn't know what to expect. My mother recommended this to me as it was free on my Kindle Fire and she had just read it. I felt like the story was pretty lacking and although this is a mystery type book I kind of felt like it was misleading in the wrong ways, if that makes any sense at all (probably doesn't, sorry). However this was a quick and easy read that took me roughly two hours while at work. Honestly I read this book because I needed to get it off my to-read list and it looked shorter than the next sci-fi novel I'm starting. I might recommend this book to someone who was in between literature and did not have a giant list of books to read (like me).
"Whispered Pain" is the newest suspense-filled story by award-winning author Ashley Fontainne. Once again, this author does not disappoint. From the tantalizing beginning, all the way through to the pulse-pounding end, you will be on the edge of your seat wondering what's going to happen next. Ashley is famous for her convoluted plot twists and turns and this novella is full of them. Her devious characters will keep you guessing and each surprise will be something you never saw coming. "Whispered Pain" is haunting and mesmerizing and filled with characters and atmospheric settings that will whisper in your mind and memory long after the last page is turned.
"Whispered Pain," a novella, is a convoluted plot, which starts off as a sweet romance and subtly twists into a mystery that is full of surprises and a type of horror that is suddenly sprung on the reader. When a reader wants something that is different and mind-boggling, then you want a story by this author, and she is turning them out one right after another. And amazingly enough, each one has a sense of haunting and horror about it, and yet each one is totally different. I truly enjoyed this particular plot and I am sure you will also is you enjoy this particular genre.
This one gets off to a slow start. The first several chapters are different characters and it is difficult to follow. Once this story gets going, though, it is hard to put down. Everything also gets tied up at the end. It is a pretty intense and twisted story. My first thought when I started listening to this one is that he narrator sounds like a Disney princess. That ends up working for the story, though. It provides a contrast to some of the horrific events in the book. This narrator also does a particularly excellent job of bringing the dialogue to life. I enjoyed listening.
** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
This was a really unexpected story, and it was excellently told! I love a good a short story that can captivate you from the beginning and finish strong...fulfilling all aspects of a well written tale...this one does not disappoint...A woman in a coma after a heartbreaking accident...listens to those around her and learns some very dark secrets!! I did not want to put this one down...and I highly recommend you add it to your cart now and buy it!!!
'Whispered Pain' is another incredibly well written thrilling book by Ashley Fontainne. The storyline was full of pain and sadness, betrayal, revenge and the ultimate moral- live today, you may not get tomorrow. I loved the way it played out. The characters are a range of persons whom are evil, betrayers, depressed and some that are beautiful inside in a way that touches others. A great quick read. A good add to your tbr list.
WOW! I was caught on the first page, but somehow became confused and nearly gave up in the first 37 percent of this story. Something made me try just a few more pages. I was blown away. Suddenly the story flowed seamlessly together. I will not give spoilers. The author explains it all in an amazing tale of greed, love gone wrong, hate, and rebirth. Give this a chance. You will not be disappointed. I will be looking for more from this author.
