Jack Nolan had his life all mapped out as he pursued a promising career as an attorney in Michigan. Suddenly his world was knocked out of orbit and he found himself living with his Uncle Mickey above Mickey's bar in South Florida. Mickey's untimely death leads to Jack becoming a bar owner. Jack's protective approach to his life includes staying emotionally uninvolved with everyone around him, those who work at the bar, customers, and the objects of his frequent one-night stands.
Without warning Jack finds himself struggling to protect his beautiful bartender from unknown forces intent on killing her. Jack is confronted with decisions that require him to ignore rules he had previously deemed unbreakable.
The characters who inhabit Cap's Place turn out to be much more complex than Jack ever anticipated.
Each book in the Cap’s Place Series is a snapshot into the adventures and evolving lives of Jack Nolan and those who are a part of his South Florida Bar. As is true in real life, no single snapshot answers every question. In Jack’s case, no single glimpse ever clearly reveals to him all of the unfolding puzzles.
Robert Tarrant was born in Florida, migrating to Missouri, and finally settling in Michigan with his parents and four siblings when his Dad found work in the auto industry. After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Criminal Justice, Robert joined the Michigan State Police. While rising through the ranks of the MSP, Robert obtained his law degree and ultimately retired after 25 years of service with the MSP.
After retirement Robert went on to hold various law enforcement related positions with a total of 35 years in law enforcement and public safety in Michigan and Florida. His law enforcement experience included special weapons and tactics, narcotics, internal affairs, and emergency management.
Work and recreation have included visits to virtually every state in the continental United States, as well as Canada, Mexico, and a number of European and Asian countries.
He is now living in Texas with his wife where he writes fiction with an eye toward ordinary people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. To date, his Cap’s Place Series consists of five well received books.
Jack Nolan's life changed after one night, he went from lawyer to bar owner. Now he prefers to keep his relationships short and not committal and he tries his best to keep his rule of no sleeping with the hired help. He tries to keep everyone at arms length.
Then one of his waitresses who was bar tending goes missing and another one seems to be in a lot of trouble. Sissy starts off being protected by the police but some how they find her and she almost dies, so Jack takes her somewhere and doesn't let the police know, not even her friend who is a policewoman.
Jack finds out it's a lot harder to keep her safe and make sure his bar is still running smoothly. He also is finding it hard to keep his own rule while guarding Sissy, but then she is kind of flirty.
He gets some help by someone he isn't expecting and doesn't know what to do about it and the mystery surrounding who is after her and why takes a surprising turn, but you will have to read to find out what actually happens. :)
I like Jack, he seems like he will be a pretty decent character. I don't blame him for keeping people at arms length because of what happened. He seems a bit relationship shy. I really liked Sissy because she held her own against her attacker the first time so she has spunk.
This was a decent start to a series especially for what looks like a self published book and I have the next couple to listen too so I will be getting to them soon.
Cap's Place : a Jack Nolan novel ( book #1 by Robert Tarrant)
The characters in this novel are just ordinary citizens trying to live life and maybe grab the golden ring at some point, but life can be deadly as Jack and Sissie find out. An innocent waitress, wannabe bartender, Allison is killed for her investigation into unexplained murders in south beach and southern Florida. Jack attempts to play superhero, finds himself in over his head, but thanks to Justin manages to keep himself and Sissie alive. Thanks for a great read.
The action kept me going, but I stopped several times because Jack Nolan's character makes too many stupid and glaring mistakes as he's supposed to be a former prosecutor.
Myriad is myriad, not "a myriad of". Highly- strung, not "high-strung" waitresses. How high can one string them?
The use of the nightmare was unnecessary and cliche.
Justin wouldn't have made that type of mistake with the blond.
"Cap's Place" introduces Jack Nolan, a former Michigan attorney and prosecutor, now the owner of a South Florida bar. Jack and his staff are pulled into a mystery and murder investigation, that may be tied to a conspiracy. No cliffhangers in the ending, but raises some questions. Book 2 should be interesting.I
Strange to read a novel where a minor character, Justin, is the most interesting person in the book. I'd like to read more about him. The lead is just an ordinary guy who owns a bar and sort of fumbles his way into making the right choices. Still in all a pretty interesting story.
The story starts out like most of the Southern Florida books, then takes a turn. The main person is not a trained killer or anything like that. Robert Tarrant is really doing a very good job . Now I'm going to start another Jack Nolan book. Happy reading!
I have been reading a bunch of Florida books of late and thought this one might compare to Miami Jones series but it kind of fell flat for me. I may try one more to see if it gets better
I have completed the series as it now stands and I still want more. The evolution of the characters is pronounced and believable (except maybe Elena) and I would love to go to this bar. Read them all.
Cap's Place is a bar in south Florida, inherited by Jack Nolan. As the book progresses Jack starts to learn how clueless he is about the bar and his employees. He steps up to the plate to protect his bartender Sissy, but he seems rather inept in his pursuit. I doubt very much that I will finish reading this series, although this book was somewhat entertaining.
Bequeathed a Bar, and all that goes with it, both, good and bad!
Jack Nolan, lawyer-turned-bar owner, finds himself in the middle of a plot to kidnap (kill?) his bartender, and what follows is his attempt to hide her from her would-be killers, while, at the same time, trying to find out just who the 'bad guy's are! Jack is way out of his league, having had no experience whatsoever in playing hero to the 'damsel in distress,' but, fortunately, is assisted by a 'regular' at Jack's bar, Justin, a fishing boat deck hand who (as it turns out) is much, much more than that, and who is focal to eliciting a happy ending for, both, bartender and bar owner. Author Robert Tarrant does a good job of fleshing-out his characters, and the action he brings to these characters is non-stop, making for a fast-paced and highly enjoyable read. I, sincerely, hope that The Cap's Place Series Book 2 will be made available on Kindle, as I look forward to reading more in this series by this fine author!
The writing was a little subpar. The story fell flat at the end but the characters were just interesting enough to keep me turning the pages. Hopefully the writing gets better.
This was an ok read, a little too much description in some places but with a good story line. The ending seems a bit abrupt and left me with more questions than normal for a cliffhanger.
On vacation in Florida and my husband recommended this author to me. Good book. I'm intrigued by the characters. I'm more of a gulf coast, keys person but any where in Florida is better than New England in February!
