Nicole Williams is the sole protector of an elixir that will end a curse on the human race. But while the elixir strengthens her, it also forces her to abandon the love of the person most important to her—her boyfriend, Austin.
Determined to prove her loyalty and to distract herself from heartache, Nicole attacks her assignments with zeal, along with her goal to master Wind powers as quickly as possible. While she is getting stronger as an Arete, the group that wants to destroy all magical people is also growing in numbers and strength. Their new world leader is about to be revealed—an individual they believe is powerful enough to bring them victory against Aretes everywhere.
In the meantime, Nicole receives a plea for help from an elderly woman she met while studying in Ohio who may have information about the upcoming war. Nicole must now choose to continue her work or abandon everything she’s striven to achieve in the past few months to save the woman. If she chooses to come to Anna Morse’s rescue, she’ll need Austin’s assistance. Will they be able to put aside their feelings and find Nicole’s friend or will they lose control and doom humanity to be forever cursed?
Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and fluently speaks 2 ½ languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.
Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.
This book was weird like I felt a weird vibe while reading it. The whole Tarian group made me feel uncomfortable in a creepy way and even if it was interesting because we have some revelations it was still weird And unlike the previous books where the relationships between Nicole and Lizzie and Nicole and Austin where in the center of the story and Nicole could count on them it's not the case here she need to infiltrate the Tarians by herself and she has to break up with Austin
(small spoiler ahead :
And why she has to date another guy it wasn't fair and it was unnecessary especially when Nicole clearly says that she's still in love with Austin and she just want to wait until they can be together again so not cool she could just be single for like a few weeks/months
End of spoilers)
But overall it was nice and I read it in almost one sitting and I'm currently reading book 5
This book took Nicole and her friends through some crazy, harrowing experiences. It was nail-biting tense, and sometimes, downright scary. The twists in this book were shocking and made it hard to stop reading. The only negative was it ended quite abruptly and didn’t tie everything nicely together into much resolution. There was resolution, but it was abrupt and kind of surprised me. But, their biggest challenges are yet to be faced, and since this is almost the end of the series, I can forgive the abrupt ending because to get this far, you have to be pretty engaged and dedicated to finishing. This is a great series with fantastical creatures and insane plot twists that make you wince, whimper or whirl around in a field of daisies. (All right, not the last one because I didn’t have a nearby field to twirl in, but the other two I did quite a lot throughout this story).
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for my fair and honest review.
Whilst Nicole and Austin's phone conversations are ending in 'love you's', Lizzie is enjoying her between-boyfriends time. Austin is pushing the lessons in channeling without a focus that he'd promised Nicole. His worry leading him to facilitate the added protection Nicole will obtain if she can use her magic freely. Coolidge again provides an invaluable resource in the form of a book detailing the skills needed in various subsets of ability, where mastery of the various number of skills results in mastery of that element. It is now more readily understood why Nicole had taken so long to channel: her subset skill being the hardest of all wind abilities. Starting at the end does however offer the skill type that makes learning the rest much easier. Nicole has also learnt through trial and error that the best way to keep the elixer close and protected is via the necklace she now currently wears.
The girls are watching the x-files in their downtime before classes get into full swing. It is probably less surprising than one might otherwise suspect; given the sights, and learning of alternate dimensions, they experienced in Perceive, the x-files makes a lot more sense. Something drastic has happened though and it escapes everyone's understanding. Whenever Nicole and Austin make any kind of intimate contact, that is they touch, kiss, et cetera, Nicole gets horrible visions of the sorts of creatures that were associated with the portal. She also experiences painful and sickening sensations in her body. Just when things are settling in well between the two lovers another hurdle has to come along. Nicole however, quickly learns of a new hurdle in her relationships: the Tarian organisation and allegedly Rebecca herself has her married off to another Arete who is part of a Tarian group. She meets the slimeball at her first official meet and greet held on Xmas eve. It takes all of five seconds before he's touching and passing his lips over her body in inappropriate ways.
As readers of the prior books know, the viper's nest that is the Tarians is never far from home for Nicole. Indeed she needs to go no further than home to find herself in the lion's den. Her's and Tiffany's strained relationship has never lead Nicole to any presumptions of love. Nonetheless, it still hurts to hear her say that as long as she keeps her eye on the ultimate goal she has no problems with the group's destruction of her only daughter. Hell, had biology seen her mother's zygote form first, instead of her deceased identical twin's, then Tiffany too would be an Arete. Its undoubtedly certain that Tiffany's life long bitterness and jealousy drives her involvement with Tarians. Even when Nicole reminds her that Aretes did nothing wrong in being born, and that at eighteen she's barely had the chance to live, leaving her scared for her life and not ready to die yet, mummy dearest does no more than shrug; telling her not to be melodramatic whilst callously returning to her laptop in her secretarial role for the Tarians. Nicole's Xmas Eve will be extra special in her eighteenth year, she'll get to be introduced to her future Tarian group (sarcasm intended); a.k.a. those most likely to be directly involved in her murder. Rebecca has drummed in the need to learn to lie well, but what does she do with all the embroiled emotions that arise. With regard to Rebecca it seems she's well practiced at lying herself.
Espionage becomes the main flavour of the series as Observe plays out. An afterlife contact coming about because of the events of Austin's main tale in Praxis, are now paying off and making unforeseen consequences of involvement with the magical photograph even more important than it ever was before. Fortunately Austin was able to obtain something of importance to use as barter, if not they'd otherwise have little to offer the spirit exhausting the energy necessary to carry out what they need her to do. Only in hindsight is it revealed that what they seek to avoid from coming about is more than enough motivation to warrant any effort put into finding it out. Nicole spends much of her time being pulled from pillar to post and has little personal time to stew on the things she's lost in being the Arete's only possible hope to stem the immediate tide, should the Tarians succeed in their use of the device created by Rebecca and Captain Christopher Price.
The depths of Tarian infiltration is staggeringly vast, spanning innumerable private groups with members ranging to the highest levels of government. The daunting reality of what the Aretes worldwide are facing is enough to scare even the boldest of heart. Even if by the remotest possibility Nicole should succeed, the resulting situation speaks of an unpredictable change to the way of life everyone currently knows. The future is bleak, and regardless of what ever Nicole manages to pull off, there'll not be a single person worldwide who won't be affected in some way by the changes to come. With enemies situated as close as can possibly be, Nicole's hope to come away unscathed is slowly being whittled away. Now willing and prepared to give her life in favour of no more Aretes being needlessly killed, the things she's now been exposed to show her how naive having said beliefs ever was. The lives, including their own, that the Tarians are prepared to end shows that so many have already been ended, let alone how many are to come. The idealistic goal of showing the world how both Aretes and non-magical people can benefit from a collaboration becomes ultimately impossible as Nicole's learning shifts during her rise to the top of the Tarian leadership. The realisation that she's no more than a figurehead being manipulated isn't long in it's arrival; Nicole's as much, and more than, the next crash test dummy.
Another exciting addition to the Mosaic Chronicles, the fourth book Observe is as entertaining as those that have come before. Nicole's magical growth is now on par to make her a logical partner to Austin and Coolidge's strengths. She's not there yet but the signs are improving with each new book. She's also learning further how to protect her heart. Its now obvious that unless she can obtain the strength and fortitude necessary to be the pivotal player for the Aretes, she risks falling in to depression. Austin continues to show he's prepared to make the short-term sacrifices that might lead him to the fulfilment of his long-term goals. His love for Nicole, even though he loses the ability to dhow it, is sufficient enough to make him accepting that her happiness is the most important thing; even if it's not with him. Coolidge's resourcefulness is a definite boon, without him its doubtful that they ever would've made it this far. The slightly different change in tone works exceptionally well in building anticipation for the things to come. I can't say that I'm completely happy with the further changes to the Nicole and Austin saga. But its not for readers to decide where a storyline should go, so I'll refrain from letting it determine my rating. However, because I got a strong sentiment that Observe was more about building up the expectations of where the plot will go next, and not exactly a book in it's own right, I'm going with four stars on this one.
SUPER FUN AND BRINGS A SMILE TO MY FACE!! My reviews on the first three books in this series have garnered 5-star reviews due to the sheer creativity and unpredictability from these books, but now I'm writing a 5-star review because of how much I not genuinely love the book and this series, and would give it 6-stars if possible due to creativity and unpredictability, and just sheer FUN. Although the book is short, which is a bummer because it would be great to have a longer story, we FINALLY see how all of the plots and events from the previous books are finally coming together to hopefully present a super strong and mind-blowing finish to the series in the 5th installment. As I've said before, Andrea Pearson's storytelling of the Mosaic Chronicles is very reminiscent of the TV shows "The Magicians," and "Doctor Who." The events that occur in this whole series alone are strokes of creative genius (because my lowly writing self cannot produce decent strokes of creativity), and Pearson weaves everything together in a way that is magical, and just super cool and fun to read! When I read these books, I feel the same way that I do when watching an episode of "Doctor Who," asking myself how in the world was anyone able to come up with such a crazy, fun, cool, and creative story??!!
I also have to say that I'm pleased that this YA series is not chock-full of ridiculous and unrealistic romance (which I do enjoy when written well). Although this is a YA series and the main characters are young college aged (high teens, low 20s), I have a hard time reading this series without constantly thinking that Nicole and her classmates are older than Pearson wrote them out to be, simply because it seems like a lot of trauma and danger that happens to Nicole and the others seem a little unrealistic for people that young. But, that's probably just a personal bias that I have to get over. Overall, really great story, and can't wait to finish the 5th installment, and the 3 that come afterwards. Pearson is not officially an author of whose books I will be reading from here on out, because she has captured my full attention!
I purchased this book as part of the Mosaic Chronicles Omnibus set which is why this review may not show as a verified purchase, but I wanted to give a separate review about it since my opinions differ greatly from the other reviews on here so far.
I love how the books in the series carry the same theme in the cover artwork which is imaginative and portrays the Wind abilities of the main character. Although I appreciate the book picks up right where Perceive left off, it continues down the long road in the Science Fiction genre with all kinds of crazy twists and turns along the way. I also appreciate how Pearson does not reiterate what happened in the previous books other than short refreshers. I'm sorry but that's about all I can appreciate about this book and this piece of the series.
The series for me though is becoming more and more unbelievable with each new book. All of the events moving forward are extremely unrealistic. It's absurd that a college student would be the "chosen one" to take over an extremist group such as the Tarians who want to annihilate her people, the Aretes. Especially since in this book, they require her to steal an unstealable object from an Arete and her professor of all people agree to help her steal it. Just so that she will be able to join said extremist organization in hopes to someday (soon) win them over and become their leader. Not to mention she carries an elixir to help her achieve her goals but these all-powerful "Great Ones" would cause her physical pain & suffering by just being around her powerful Arete boyfriend therefore causing them to break up. The story overall is just getting too weird for my tastes and the only reason I've read this far is because I've already bought the first 5 books in the series as a set. And I'm stubborn and want to know what happens in the end. Maybe it's just me, but I cannot fathom how everyone else seems to be buying in to these books. I guess if you're looking for a completely unrealistic escape, these books are definitely for you.
This seems like the true introduction to the series, though the first three books were more like introductions to the characters. We are finally getting started. The book was written great with minor grammar and spelling errors and I am going to continue reading. There was no happy ending, but I am hoping within the next few books there is a tie up and the other books in the series are another plot and not a continuation. I mean I love series, but I think this series is somewhere around 6-8 books now. That sounds plot draining.
Why am I giving the book 3 stars and I like it? I didn't like the outcome of the characters, but I am hoping they work out their issues in the next couple of installments. If they don't, I don't think I could deal with the emotions I feel for the characters enough to see them tortured anymore. So keeping my fingers crossed that this all ends soon and isn't dragged too long. I hope you enjoy the book!
This is the 4th book (3rd full novel) in the Mosaic Chronicles books.
My "short answer" review is that if you liked the other two full novels (there is also a collection of stories published which is listed as book 2) then you will definitely enjoy this one as well.
Andrea Pearson also e-published a collection set of the first five which is worth getting if you haven't purchased any of the books individually. I reviewed that and, as I said of the whole set, this "installment" is by itself a great combination of romance, adventure and magic, with well developed characters that I genuinely liked and who interact wonderfully with each other, plus a believable world and great supporting cast. It is easy for me to recommend this book. Readers will definitely enjoy.
A lot is placed on Nicole’s shoulders in this book. She can’t be near Austin without getting physically sick. She has to pretend to hate Aretes and take over leadership of the Tarians. She also has to pretend to follow her great grandmother, Rebecca, all the while knowing that Rebecca was being deceitful. Ms Pearson has lots more surprising adventures for Nicole in this book. I think young adults would love this series and even though I’m not a young adult anymore, (only young at heart ;;-)) I enjoyed reading this. Highly recommended.
This is a great story. Nicole learns that she has magical powers. And gets initiated in a club that she is trying to find a way to save lives. With the help from Colidge. This is a fast past read, that is a Mystery as well as Nicole learning how to handle her magic. The Author really brings the characters to life. You won't be able to put the book down, because it pulls you in to where you don't want to put it down. Shauna Joesten
Observe is the fourth in the Mosaic Chronicles series and it’s the best yet. There were so many things I suspected that were confirmed and so many things I didn’t expect. I found it hard to stop reading when I needed to do other things because I just had to know what would happen next. I highly recommend this book and the whole Mosaic Chronicles series!
Nicole must surround herself with danger and lies for the sake of future generations! Can Nicole's innate honesty allow her to get through the maze of lies with the fate of the Aretes on her shoulders? Who can she trust in this tangled web? This latest installment of The Mosaic Chronicles brings you further into the plots of the Tarians wicked schemes
This series is continuing to be a good read. The biggest down side is the characters do not act the way I would expect them too. Sometimes there are quire thick, sometimes pretty bright. Somtimes distracted in ways that I have a hard time relating to.
That said, the plot has been enjoyable and is keeping my interest. Looking forward to the next book.
Observe follows Nicole and friends on a perilous journey. Hang on for a nail-bitting tale as Nicole and friends try to determine who they can trust in the upcoming Tarian/Arete war. Can Nicole master her sub-abilities in time to save herself and her friends? A must read for fantasy lovers! *I received a free eBook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
This is the 4th book in the series. In this book, Nicole will have to learn to do things she never thought she would have to do. Can she pretend to be the perfect Tatiana her parents want? When push comes to shove can she just by and watch? And can she really let go of Austin? This was such a great book. You never know what’s coming with Andrea!
I'm not a fantasy fan but I LOVE this series! The characters are relatable and likeable and the cliffhanger endings leave me on the edge of my seat with suspense. Be sure to read the series in order.
The story is clearly coming to a conclusion. Sides are being drawn, but the challenge is to know who is on which side. Takes the story to a larger scope and opens up worlds not even dreamed of. Characters are being stretched and I look forward to seeing where they go from here.
Books 1-4 I got in a set so I rated them separately but am reviewing them here as a unit. The characters aren’t deep but they’re likable. The writing isn’t earth shattering but the plot is interesting and keeps a quick pace overall. I’d like to see how the rest of the series finishes.
The story continues with Nicole and Austin. Their romance is finally off the ground and they are able to enjoy each other's company. Nicole got the elixir and put it around her neck for safe keeping. But now every time she touches Austin, Nicole gets violently ill.
And she continues to have visits from the old lady in the tree (remember the spiders?) who wants her to become the leader of the Tarians. But to do that, Nicole has to get rid of all the Aretes. With the help of an elderly woman she met in Ohio, Nicole finds out the truth about the old lady, who is her relative and her parents. And it's not good. With the help of Anna Morse, Austin and her instructor, Nicole will have to go against everything she's been told
I got the set of books from Andrea Pearson since I'm a part of her group.
Book 4 – Observe I received a copy free from the author in exchange for an honest review. Technically, this story could be read alone. But reading all the prior books in the series will fully flesh out a lot of motives and background. After finally hooking up with the college boy who makes her heart and stomach flutter, the elixir Nicole obtained in the previous book turns that emotion into nausea and headaches and nightmarish visions. Undercover, Nicole infiltrates the local chapter of the Tarians (bad guys) and prepares to take over the world-wide organization at the behest of her spectral ancestor. This story contains more family betrayals, realization of the reach of the Tarians, and travel to other dimensions. A fun read – I can’t wait to dive into the next book!
Lots of things are happening in this part of the story. Nicole begins to feel sick, nauseated and headaches when she is near Austin. It begins with touching & then progress almost the mere thought of him makes her violently ill & she begins to have hallucinations.
On Christmas break - she begins "covert-ops", by talking with her parents about the Tarians. She begins to question Rebecca's motives and plans. All this was just the beginning, the action really ramps up its tempo near the end.
I liked how this book moved the story forward. We had new obstacles and challenges. For me, it felt like a lot of balls being thrown into the air and attempting to juggle them.
Looking forward to seeing how everything plays out in the next book!
Should not be read ad as a standalone as the book starts where the previous one ended. And Observe ends in a cliffhanger for the next book. If you like fantasy and magic, you will like the Mosaic series. There is violence and the use of magic. Nicole Williams and her best friend Lizzie, head off to college. There they team up with some new friends to stop an ancient enemy. The ability to control the elements is key in their fight. Of course there are magical obstacles and beings in their path so their journey will be difficult. There are plenty of twists and turns in the storyline to keep you riveted while reading.
This book involves a lot of Nicoles family...A family she desperately wants and needs....Lies, deceit, disgust and uncertainty are the main threads Nicole has to get through in this book, feelings that you want to be wrong about, unbelievably come true. New characters and relationships are formed but many are destroyed. It was nice to see old characters and solve the mysteries surrounding them. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this very well written series. The Author Andrea Pearson has an incredible knack of transporting you into the book and feeling all the emotions of the characters and situations they a placed in
Nicole finds out the spelled book and the spiders and so much more are actually part of a plan by her parents and family. Those were small things, just the beginning. Now she finds out they are at the top of the movement to end Aretes -- to end all magic in humanity, forever. She and Austin are on the outs, but when facing this, she needs all of her connections, all those from her school and even with the Widow from Ohio who played Cello so beautifully.
The Great Ones mess with Nicole and Austin’s relationship. Coolidge is 46 years old and has been teaching at Katon for the last 22 of those. Nicole joins the Tarian to stop them. After final exams, the Tarians have a world summit that reveals the vast extent of the Tarian Empire. Evil people are exposed at last. Nicole’s group go to a different dimension and meet Mrs. Mose’s (from Praxis Novellas) group; learning more information on the Tarians and forging new alliances.
