Sitting on the porch of a decaying house, an old brown mug sat, the top chipped, a warm breeze brushing against sun-heated ceramic.
"There is nothing more potent than a cup of tea," Old Ma’am once told her.
Twenty-year-old Lyric Mason lifted the mug, her sad eyes drawn to its flaw. She’d come home to say goodbye to her grandmother and to take over an eerie family legacy that would forever burden her.
She hadn’t counted on twenty-five year-old Grayson Kramer.
*****
"The women in that family will drive you insane," the town said.
"They’ll steal your heart and destroy your soul," they promised.
Despite the warnings, troubled Grayson was fascinated by Lyric, by the rumors and accusations that surrounded her. Prison had changed him, guilt had nearly destroyed him.
It was the guilt that would draw them together.
For in Hiccup, Mississippi, a decrepit house sat, the home feared by the locals, a group of ravens perching on the roof. In this house, there was a tea cup full of secrets held by a woman Grayson couldn’t ignore.

Wow, man the feels! I am speechless...Extraordinary doesn't even cover this superb book! This is one of those books that takes you into the land of deep feeling, leaves you there, open hearted and then fills you with beautiful and powerful emotions. I'm not saying that this is a sad book, no, it's just emotionally raw and when you're reading it, you realise your humanity, you feel everything, you learn how beautiful living is and how the right person can help you heal. You also learn that love, in all of its shapes, is one of the most powerful and one of the greatest human trait. I cannot explain to you the experience of reading this beautiful book. You have to experience these kind of emotions at least once in your lifetime. I am sure that you will definitely love the hero and the heroine and you will love their beautiful story. This book is about ancient history and curses, family duty, guilt, pain, but also about memories, learning, acceptance, healing and exquisite love. The mysterious and eerie feeling of this book will grip you from the start and won't let you go until you've reached the finish. To say it's gorgeously written, it's like saying the sun is just a little bright when you know that beautiful orb shines blindly. The writing flows like a crystalline river on shiny stones, it's not words, it's poetry! Like I said this book is not sad, we have a beautiful HEA, so don't worry. This is my first book by this author and I am in absolute awe. I am for sure, putting this author on my bookish radar. To say I didn't expect to enjoy this book it's putting it mildly. I love it when I discover, little, beautiful, literary gems. Yes, you have to read it, I know it and you know it!!!!
In the Land of Tea and Ravens is an exquisite story written by R.K. Ryals that stole my breath away. It's hauntingly beautiful and has a dark poetic feel that touches your soul. "Sometimes being broken can be beautiful. If we can't see the beauty in the pain, then we truly do go insane."
Many Folklores are based on true events, but somewhere down the line a part of it becomes forgotten or skewed. For Lyric Mason her life takes on a whole new role as she must secure her families heritage and keep watch over the battered mug that has been handed down through generations. Many of the people who live in the small town of Hiccup fear her and lay blame on the women in her family for causing men in town to go insane. Hostility and irrational behavior from the towns inhabitants are only part of the danger Lyric faces. Grayson is persistant in trying to get to know Lyric, but she isn't sure she can let him in.
Grayson has been hiding from his guilt and pain while working at his grandmother's farm. He never expects to be captivated by the eccentric girl the town fears.
I loved the whole concept of this story. The shared pain and guilt that drew them together. The supernatural qualities the story emanates. It's a definite MUST READ. "You stay away from them, you hear? You stay away. They'll strip your soul bare and leave you to the devil."
A remarkable story that leaves you breathless and stays with you. I hope the author decides to make this into a series because one cup is just not enough.
"You can tell a lot about a person by the way they take their tea."
"Most people thought love was supposed to be this beautiful, amazing experience, full of nothing except laughter and joy and happily ever afters. True love isn't about the good times. Those were too easy. True love hurt. True love healed."
In The Land Of Tea And Ravens by R.K. Ryals is a unique blend of storytelling from the past and contemporary life. Lyric is a tea girl whose family has an unusual past. Their family history is steeped in storytelling and tea. Grayson has his own issues in the past, including spending time in prison. But the two of them find each other and these two broken souls are able help each other heal. This is a wonderful story of life and love. It shows how people can overcome their family and their past in order to find happiness. I really enjoyed this book.
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this book. It's kind of a paranormal/modern day historical/new adult romance? I don't entirely know how to categorize it. It kind of reminded me of Practical Magic, actually.
It was a really great story. It was intriguing and very gripping. What knocked stars off for me was that I didn't feel like there was enough character development and romantic build up. Everything seemed to happen pretty quickly. I would have liked more interaction and more background with the characters. I liked how at the beginning of each chapter it tells the story of the Tea Girl because that gives us pretty good insight into where Lyric comes from. However with Grayson all we have to rely on is what we're told within the story itself, which unfortunately isn't that much. I didn't feel his regret as much as I just read it.
Other than the character gripe, it was an overall good story and I will definitely read more books by RK Ryals. This is my third one and while it wasn't my favorite of the 3, I'd still really recommend it.
I picked up this story on a whim because I was initially intrigued by the absolutely beautiful cover. And let’s be honest, this one really is a stunner! Unfortunately I have to say I was very disappointed and I’m actually even a little sorry I got the book. Let’s see why …
It began and ended with a cup.
The opening of the book was great – compelling, instantly drawing me in. I loved the Southern setting, but I have to say, that was about it. This book held so much promise – it really could have been great. Unfortunately I feel like the author relied too heavily on her own writing style and forgot to focus on the story, and most of all, character development.
Let’s talk about the characters.
There’s this great promise here, a man who has done something terrible which resulted in a death, and a mysterious woman who keeps secrets and makes a damn good cup of tea. These two characters could be so, so complex, but they were completely and utterfly flat. There was absolutely no character development, Lyric and Grayson felt instead like two stage actors who had badly rehearsed their lines. What they were saying didn’t go with their personalities, it was just cheesy and at times annoying. They had absolutely no depth. Really disappointing and I just hate it when this happens. When the characters are so flat, I find it very difficult to enjoy a story.
I’ll take you to a mad tea party that never ends.
Story next.
There’s not much to say – the book was very short and I felt like not much happened, at all! The author had this awesome premise that could have been developed more and worked on to make a really intriguing story, instead it just all fell flat again. It was lacklustre, I don’t have a better word for it. I just didn’t care at all for any of the characters, I just wanted to be done with the story. So horrible to say that, but it’s the honest truth.
The most beautiful endings are often the ones that still haven’t been told …
Writing style? The bright, shining star of this book.
The writing style is the sole reason I might pick up another book from the author in the future (though I doubt it will happen any time soon). It was really well done, poetic, beautiful, lyrical. I felt like the author had the need to keep the reader so engrossed in the style we wouldn’t even notice the story. But not even a great style like this could save this book for me.
In the end, In The Land Of Tea And Ravens fell completely flat for me. I’m giving it 2.5 stars for the beautiful cover and for the great quotable lines in it, otherwise, I really wouldn’t recommend picking it up.
If you’re adamant to read it, you might like it if you’re a fan of the movie Chocolat or the book Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen.
I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of In the Land of Tea and Ravens by R.K. Ryals. Come and join me for a cup of tea as I tell you about it.
Sometimes we have things in our life that are monumental, sometimes we choose these things, and sometimes they are passed down to us.
For Lyric Mason, "It began and ended with a cup." ... "It was simply a cup."
A cup that was the single most important thing in her life, a cup that connected her to her family. A cup that being tied to made her, in the eyes of the simple minds in Hiccup, Mississippi, an outcast. These townsfolk were afraid of the Mason women, they blamed them said they drove men mad, drove them insane.
What lengths would you go to in order to protect your family?
"Protect the cup. Protect it..."
Grayson Kramer, a boy working on his grandparents farm next door, is intrigued by Lyric. There's a brokenness about her, a pain he sees in the depth of her eyes, it's something he understands all too well.
"A girl with a tear on her cheek. A girl surrounded by ravens. A girl who drank tea with the dead."
Brought together by feelings of guilt and pain and shame, Lyric and Mason embark on an romance against all odds. Lyric goes against her head and follows her heart. Sharing a piece of her history with him...
Grayson is confused, curious, and captivated by her. He continues to make promises and willingly follows her ... anywhere, everywhere...against her initial protests.
"I'll take you to a mad tea party that never ends."
This story was hauntingly beautiful. The type of story that leaves you filled with hope and tiny bit of insanity.
"Well, there's a certain freedom to insanity. You should try it."
When I hit the last page, I had tears in my eyes, a smile on my face and laugh bubbling in my throat. I had but one thought, one I share with Grayson,
"I think," he said after a moment, "I think I wouldn't mind another cup of tea."
A beautiful story about love, family, relationships and the mysterious art of tea making and drinking. A rather short story with respect to being called a full fleshed novel, but containing more depth and substance than many other, longer novels I have read recently.
The characters were superbly constructed from the protagonist to the secondary characters, each one serving their role without giving the reader the feeling they are present only for the purpose of moving the plot along.
The relationship between the two main characters was well paced, satisfyingly tragic without coming across as sappy and always containing a hint of mystique.
To be quite honest, during the first few pages the writing seemed slightly awkward, which actually adds to the experience of this beautiful story by enhancing the mysterious attributes of the unfolding plot.
Also, not often does a reader come across a story in which the author was successfully able to infuse intriguing storytelling with poetic contemplation without wasting the reader's time with useless rambling. Personally, this was the first story I found myself inclined multiple times to highlight great quotes.
The plot was intricate and wonderful to follow until the end.
Overall, this story was delightful to read. With its paranormal elements, mysterious circumstances, great writing and equally great characters I would recommend it to anyone in search for a quality story.
I’ve read quite a lot of R. K. Ryals’ books and this one is definitely unique. It’s a love story about two broken people set in the middle of an unconventional fairy tale about a girl who makes tea. It sounds really weird but is actually really insightful and thought-provoking. I found the writing compelling and very emotionally gripping. Hearing Grayson’s story and the seeing the way he found understanding and acceptance with Lyric was very moving. I also liked how it worked both ways and Lyric finally found someone in Grayson who was willing to look past the rumours around her family and see a lonely girl carrying a huge burden. I also really liked the way Grayson and Lyric were willing to take a stand against the prejudice of the town rather than just stay silent and let their opportunity to be together pass them by. I don’t want to give anything more away since finding out what the deal is with Lyric’s family and her strange affinity to tea is half the story. However, I will just finish by saying it’s an excellent read and I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a quick contemporary romance that is set in the south, has ghost/paranormal elements to it, and has really intriguing main characters.
I'm not used to seeing R.K write like this, this book is very different from her other books, there were some parts I had to force myself to read and others I enjoyed very much. Lyric an Grayson do have attraction but with their pasts it's hard for them to act on it and all the judging the other townsfolk did was just awkward, "Lyric's gaze found his. For a long moment, they simply stood with the yard between them, their eyes locked, and a shared guilt tying them together." Grayson I thought he was funny at times, even those times weren't meant to be funny, "Grayson's brows rose. "You don't think so? You tell a man all your female relatives are birds because your family angered some magical person, and you don't think it'd incite my curiosity?" With Grayson you see a different Lyric, almost like a carefree one, "she grinned. "Let me try my hand at this compliment thing." She perused him critically, her dark brows lifted, her eyes trailing his hunched figure. "You look decent when you're wheezing." As I said to me some parts dragged, others moved fast so it was an alright read.
R.K. Ryals has done it again. She has written a truly breathtaking piece of art. Her soulful, southern charm caresses you and pulls you into her stories. The woman made drinking hot tea an intimate, sensual act between two people. Hot tea!
This story encompasses Southern folklore, mystery and intrigue with loss, heartache and love as only Mrs. Ryals can. Her writing speaks to me. It takes me to small country towns, farms and decaying buildings. It engulfs me in loss, pain and love. She paints the entire picture.
In The Land Of Tea and Ravens is a hauntingly beautiful tale with bits of fairytale, folklore, and romance. It will touch your heart and leave you with a hankering for a cup of tea.
I found myself pleasantly addicted to this one! Grayson and Lyric have one heck of an attraction. Lyric has a family that is full of storytelling, heartbreak and tea. A simple cup of tea! Grayson is from a family that is very well known in old money. Grayson made some wrong choices in life and is still battling those wounds. Lyric and Grayson come together and build quite the bond. Between the family history and the bonds the townfolk are not to happy and take some extreme measures. unique read for sure but amazing none the less. Can't wait to see where R.K takes this book for the future all I know is I will be happily waiting for more!
Such an amazing story, it was very different to what I usually read but I loved it anyways.
Grayson and Lyric are two broken souls who find each other and bond over a cup of tea.
Quote; She laughed " Tea is never simple "
Lyric is a very strange but intriguing girl and Grayson just can't stay away despite the rumours he's determined to keep coming back and I loved that about him, he never once failed on his promises, he listens to her.
It's a must read, one that will leave you wanting more of their story,
In The Land Of Tea and Ravens has officially become my favourite book ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I feel so bad, as on paper, this book like is my soul penned down - tea/moonlight/eerie house/speaking with the dead etc - but I can't quite give it the 4 stars that I'd like to! It was still a good read, though!
The writing is stunning, I like Lyric and Grayson together (such great names!) and give me any kind of spooky/mysterious story and I'll lap it up. Maybe I need to give this another read at some point (and I'm totally going to, the words were pretty af), but I felt the plot itself was a little bit lacking..? Though this might be as it's the story of Lyric and Grayson's brief relationship (by brief, I took this to mean 'whirlwind') and we are focused on them the majority of the time. It would have been nice to have some variation on setting, too!
I'll possibly come back to this review (and maybe upgrade my star rating, who knows?) at a later date!
If you want a quick, ethereal read then definitely pick this up :)
Mavvaff... -_-'
I have read and reread this book so many times. I can’t express how much I enjoyed this book. But I’ll try.
There is a very unique magical system and it surrounds tea and Ravens. How freaking cool is that?
The MC is very raw and real. She is not accepted, she has gone through trauma, and she is trying to do what she has to for her family. I just love her so much.
The romance feels real to me. It makes me so happy and gives me so many feelings. I’m pretty sure I let out a breath I did t know I was holding at the end.
A beautifully sweet and yet very mysterious haunting story about two people dealing with the guilt in their past, and how learning to trust each other is as important as a good cup of tea. Loved the story of the Tea Girl that started each chapter, so glad to have found this author
I have had this book and author recommended to me a few times, and I was in a bit of a rut, so I picked it up. Little did I know that I would NOT put it down. I swear the longest I did was to crawl into bed to finish it. The mystery behind Lyric and her family, just wow! Amazing read. One of my top 5 of 2019.
I found and purchased this book on a whim, I was so impressed by the plot, writing style and the thematic concerns communicated by the author. I have re-read this book twice since purchasing it and enjoy it each time. Looking forward to reading more from Ryals in the future.
As always RK has written a book that I have absolutely fallen in love with!! She is my all time favorite author and I can’t wait until they start turning her books into movies!!
No sé que sentir. Me costó sentirme parte del libro al principio, pero a medida que avanzaba empecé a tomarle el gusto(? aunque el final se me hizo muy predecible. Pero de todas formas, es un libro para pasar el rato!
