MacArthur New Testament Commentary Series

Matthew: The Coming of the King

Rate this book

The New Testament launches with an eyewitness account of the events of Jesus’ life from Matthew, a former despised tax collector who experienced a radical conversion and became one of Jesus’ own disciples. Matthew’s unique view interweaves his strong Jewish knowledge of the expected Messiah with his personal recollections of the flesh-and-blood Savior. In the process, he reveals the qualifications that prove Jesus was the promised Messiah: His miraculous birth, His response to the test of His kingliness, His inauguration, His miracles, His teachings, and His public ministry. Every detail of the book of Matthew confirms Jesus’ deity and proves He is the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world.

The MacArthur Bible Studies provide intriguing examinations of the whole of Scripture. Each guide incorporates extensive commentary, detailed observations on overriding themes, and probing questions to help you study the Word of God with guidance from John MacArthur.

I love John MacArthurs work, have read quite a few of his books, and continuously read these Bible studies with my wife. I enjoy the other Bible studies a lot, and this was a good Bible study, but the choice to make one Bible study book, with twelve chapters, for all of Matthew, I found to be too much reading per session. With this I don't mean that I don't like to read, but that it was almost impossible to get an in-depth understanding of Matthew's gospel. While these Bible study are nowhere as detailed as John's sermons, I would have preferred if the Bible study would have been made into two books, so that every session would have been basically one chapter.

So all in all, a good book which I enjoyed, but wished it had been less of an overview and slightly more in-depth (as most other Bible study books by MacArthur are).

MATTHEW - The Coming of the King ~ MacArthur Bible Studies

⭐⭐⭐ 3/5

Study on the book of Mathew. Questions after each chapter and lots of study notes to make sense of the text. I feel this study could have been better in the sense that the chapters were looking at big portions of scripture from Matthew and most of the text was not a part of the following questions. I feel if he had kept it like he did with the book of Daniel, one study on each chapter then I would have learned more.

Saying all that as usual the study notes were excellent and if anything you read the entire book of Matthew so it can't be bad. Perhaps this is a better study book for someone new to the faith and doesn't know too much then I can see this particular study having a more meaningful impact.

Matthew: The Coming of a King is a study guide taking you through the entire book of Matthew. It includes the scripture with study notes and discussion questions.

I loved this study guide and did it with a group of small women. It took us over two years to go through and I loved every moment of it. We went deeper then I could have imagined. I learned so much and I can't wait to get more of MacArthur's study guides for the other new testament books.

I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars

One of the few Bible study guides that I found useful. Included substantive questions directly linked to the text, not "fluff" questions or unrelated questions. Only drawback is that the text included in the guide is from the KJV, which I don't use.

All in all, highly recommended.

excelente recurso

Una ayuda para todo aquel que quiera profundizar en la Escritura. Los comentarios son facilidades de entender pero eso no demerita la profundidad de las observaciones al texto bíblico

A great study that helped me read my first ever full book of the Bible!

The booked used KJV when I personally wished it would’ve use NKJV for a more seamless study for a newbie like me

I read this in tandem with the book of Matthew. The MacArthur commentary enhances understanding with context, explanations and cross references. The Gospel speaks for itself but this commentary helped me understand with greater depth and appreciation.
