The Shade a Vampire has left in my family is still hunting me, making my life a restless chase. It's not only my job, I have a personal vendetta to carry out against vampires. They are the reason my sister is on a wheelchair and our mother gone. And I'm not a forgiving girl.
Vampires start integrating among humans, but even with laws adapting to the new society, many problems arise. I solve them. I kill problems.
In the span of less than two weeks I manage to turn my entire world upside down.
This time I have been chosen to take care of some human turned into vampire, but that will not be as easy as it seemed. I have somehow gotten involved in a war against the ancients ones, too dangerous and powerful enemies to fight by myself. And before I could even think about it I find myself allied with a very unlikely team.
At the end of it all, they're the ones that save me. I've been fooling myself for years. It turns out I was the rescue mission all along.
There were four main things that really made this book hard for me to read and unwilling to continue the series.
1. Lack of characters: there are a few main characters that are not really well developed, rather two dimensional. Our main character Adele isn't a static character but the change she undergoes is downright predictable and annoyingly angsty.
2. Half-baked plot/story: the plot and story in general were not bad; however, it just felt really j finished and it could have used definite enriching. It felt like a first draft, in a way.
3. Insta-love: Connor and Adele see each other and it's love at first sight, despite the fact that they know nothing about each other and spend less than 5 minutes in the same room together. It goes on to get worse and I simply did not understand how after spending a total of like two hours together they were allegedly in love.
4. Convenient acquisition of new powers: in any UF/Fantasy novel I am very bothered by the sudden and all too conveniently acquiring of new powers. That's exactly what happened here. She spent the whole book dissing vampires and hating them and then when she needed more power she got it and said something along the lines of "I'm finally home," implying accepting vampires or being more vampire was what she needed all along. BUT that's not what we've heard all along, see point three.
Not sure if I can say much about this one. It has good and bad.
Insta-love...pathetic. I mean, how can they be in love when they only have a few hours together? Just too convenient.
Plot...meh. Could have been a bit better as it dragged at times and the plot was rather predictable(I feel like I say that a lot). I did like some of the changes the main character goes through emotionally though. I know others have been confused by her ups and downs, but in reality aren't we all that way? She's confused and hasn't learn to deal with herself, I get that.
Suddenly gets powers? I can't seem to like it, no matter how it's spun. Suppressing memories, yes. but powers? Meh. Doesn't feel right.
Character development was weak, especially for Conner. I'd like to see a bit more build up so he doesn't seem like a placeholder.
All in all, it kind of felt like a weak attempt of The Vampire Club(Anita Blake series).
For my clean readers: Language, but no f-bomb. Sexual encounter, easy to skip over. Murder. Violence-lot's of it. And graphic descriptions.
A vampire book. Decent effort. Its totally about the female lead. A lady hero. It is good mostly, but during the latter half, it dragged a bit. Looked like the author was just filling up words and couldn't decide if it was time for climax yet. It also got a bit repetetive. Adele, seemed a contradiction, kind of like confused... I couldn't decide if she was tough or vulnerable, ruthless or plain terrified. It would have been nicer if Connor's character was etched out more fully too, considering he is the male lead. Too little space given to him. Poor guy was almost pushed into the corner! All in all, a decent read. Vampire buffs may enjoy it a lot.
I would give this two stars because I DID finish it, but I skimmed the last 70 pages so it doesn’t really count. Generally just boring. Main character went on a lot about how badass she was and put other women down all the time. Not my scene. Also insta-love with Bland White Guy and a really rushed second half.
Vampire hunting with a twist yes this is yet another first in a series but it's not a definite must read the rest straight away kinda book. It was enjoyable and a lot of action to boot unfortunately for me bits of it seemed to get lost like the girlfriend who the boss just handed out an employees home address to a stranger off the street seriously ? The flashback chapter should have come before it did Im not sure if it did actually address all the questions of why the lead hated vampires being a half breed herself.
Extremely slow, lacks adequate description and there is little to nothing that draws you to the characters. The premise of the book was good but hasn't been fleshed out.
This book was great! It was different and took on its own twist which I very much enjoyed...murder, mystery, romance, violence, and vampires...what more could a girl want!
I can give this series 3 stars but just. It is very typical for this type of book. While this book/series is not bad it is not great either. It was just okay, it was good enough to keep going but nothing that you would recommend to any as a must read.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
So much going on in this book. Great pace to start this series. Likeable characters, good storyline. Well written and fantastic performance from Evelyn.
This was okay... it was a little bit boring. I got the whole series for free so I’m going to finish it but if I had just this first book I probably wouldn’t continue
As this is part of a series, I can only hope that this is laying the groundwork for more in depth character and world building. While there was plenty of action and some interpersonal relationships, for the most part, I just didn't feel the closeness that Adele had with the people surrounding her, especially Connor. Yes, she seemed close with her sister, but a lot of that seemed more out of a sense of guilt as opposed to love. I did appreciate that even being a supposed badass slayer, she had serious flaws emotionally. Not to mention her realization that she was never going to be equipped to fight the monsters she was up against. I also appreciated the fact that she did learn to accept all the parts of herself. I am curious if she continues to grow as a person, so I most likely will read the next book to see how the story progresses.
Not a bad read, all in all. Could use some editing to catch some minor issues that distract you from the story. Adele is a strong female character who has much room for growth in upcoming novels. I think it is a good start to what could turn out to be a stellar series.
I downloaded Vampire's Shade as a free book from Amazon. I had a love-hate relationship with this read. Part of it due to the cover which makes no sense with the plot-- what's with those wings and holey tights?
For some reason, Adele's personality, speech, and sayings reminded me of other young, vampire-slayer characters-- all attitude and self-reflection. I'll admit, I enjoyed the plot, and secondary characters, even if I found the protagonists unremarkable. The story was well-paced, and thoughtful. I think my dislike is the cookie-cutter heroine-- a compilation of other, similar vampire-slayers. I can't say I was too impressed with Connor, either. Nor did I ever really get a sense of the attraction between the two. Their relationship seemed contrived, rather than a natural progression of events.
There's a lot of potential here, and I'm willing to bet this is a series that will improve as the writer hits her stride with the characters.
Meh. I really dislike female characters who are basically men in drag, and that's how this one starts out. Adele is a tough talking, gun-slinging, don't-need-nobody, semi-nihilist, leathers-wearing biker chick with a grudge. If that's your thing, great, but I find that trope really boring and abrasive. It also makes the insta-love especially unbelievable. It turns out she's also a Mary Sue complete with transformation just when it's needed to save the day, so there's also that. Between those and the typos and grammatical inconsistencies that got worse as the book went on, a major story inconsistency, and a lack of explanation regarding the backstory, I just can't see reading more of this series.
I didn't mind this book. I thought the storyline was alright and the characters were alright. Normally I'm not one who picks out spelling and grammar errors while reading but there was so many in this book that I couldn't help myself. It turned me off the book a little bit. Another issue with the book was the instalove between Adele and Connor. As soon as they meet I knew it was love at first sight and it annoyed me so much. I personally don't understand the whole I love you when you only know someone for a short amount of time. I probably wont continue on with this series unfortunately.
Vampire Shade 1 by Vivienne Neas is a story about a human-vampire hunter who has a personal vendetta to carry out against vampires. I listened to this book on audio narrated by Evelyn Marcail. Evelyn did an amazing job narrating. I really enjoyed the different character voices she used. This is the first book of Vivienne's that I have read and I am getting ready to jump into book 2 of the series. I didn't fully get into this book so I am hoping the next one pulls me in.
A half human/ half vampire girl who kills vampires because unresolved personal issues with her past. Her human mother was killed and her sister put in a wheelchair, by her vampire father. This book has mystery, action, romance, vampires and other supernaturals what more could you ask for. I am loving this series on to the next book.
I enjoyed this book and really liked the half human half vampire concept but I have to say the book left me with a few questions? Why did her dad attack her mum and sister? The police were looking for Connor but after they killed the master vampires they no longer seemed to be looking for him? How was Jennifer involved? I guess I will have to read the next book and see if that sheds some light.
Lots of action, blood, and death. A half human/ half vampire girl who kills vampires because unresolved personal issues with her past. Her human mother was killed and her sister put in a wheelchair- done by her vampire father- but why? I liked the story but I felt like I was missing pieces.
"Vampire's Shade 1" by Vivienne Neas is fun fantasy that could be described as Stephanie Plum meets Blade. In the first book we meet Adele Griffin and follow her on night time journey as a vampire slayer/bounty hunter.
Hearing that a half vampire is a vampire slayer was a shock and to read she falls for the mark she use supposed to kill. There is drama, action and romance all I one book. Can't get better that that
This is a good read. One question I wanted answered and it was not addressed was why Adeles dad assaulted his family. I was glad to see love soften her.
