I became aware of Joan Chittister in 2011 when I entered a Benedictine monastery as an Associate, which is a live in volunteer. My husband of 35 years had divorced me and I went there to discern how to live my life henceforth. I have read a number of her books and find them engaging and illuminating. This biography fleshes out she has gotten where she is. The rest of the story is yet to be lived.

I have always admired Joan Chittister - and in the reading of her life story I love her even more. She is beyond intelligent and her faith is immense. She doesn’t give up - and in her tenacity I find hope. Reading about the transition of the Erie Benedictines from the 60s to now shows the resilience and faithfulness if this community - and their willingness to power through trying transition. It gives me hope for the future and witness to the Spirir.

I had read a book or two of Chittister and was happy to read this biography of her. Her early years were traumatic. She entered the convent at a young age. What was interesting to me was that this book was not just her story but the story of convents through the 20th century and how the life there changed. Vatican II made such a difference. Changes in habits, routines, and duties were all changed. I will look for more of Chittester’s work and read it with interest.

Sister Joan Chittister has been a voice for the liberal catholic woman for decades. This Interesting bio reveals the source of her commitment to women, ecology, and openness to change within the Catholic Church. She is a prophet of our times and lives the purpose driven life. Well worth reading.
