Classic Halloween creatures, including ghosts, a witch, a black cat, a spider, a werewolf, a mummy and a skeleton, all make their way to a special party at the vampire's castle. Rhymed iambic tetrameter enhances this friendly introduction to Halloween. Recommended for children ages 3 to 6 years.
Welcome! Please, have a seat, and I'll read you a story. (Right now, if you'd like, or anytime, really. The videos linked here include full-length readings of two of my children's picture books.)
I am a poet, and Dr. Seuss is my hero. I write in rhyme — usually iambic or anapestic tetrameter — because the rhythm engages young children and helps them learn to read. (Plus it's fun!)
I'm also an artist. I love to play with textures. For book illustrations, I often combine mixed media with elements from my photography work, then use a computer to synthesize and process the final "digital collage" images.
Goodreads is my primary social media platform, so please check in often for book trailers, announcements and giveaways. Thanks for stopping by!
What a beautifully written, rhyming Halloween story. With all the typical characters that we associate with the holiday, black cats, spiders, ghost, skeletons, etc. The illustrations are delightful, but the story is not frightful. This is not a scary story but a fun tale of Halloween and the Spooky characters that goes bump in the night. I can't wait for my grandchildren (10 of them) to have fun reading this enchanting rhyming Halloween story. I am sure it will become a favorite, especially with the illustrations and rhyming.
As the author explains in the back of the book, this rhythm is formally called iambic tetrameter. With a da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM beat.
I have to add that one of my granddaughters, 8-years-old and in the third grade had so much fun reading this delightful book and laughing and pointing out things in the illustrations.
Disclosure: I won a signed copy of this charming book in a Goodreads giveaway. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.
I have been an avid goodreads reader for several years and have won my share of books. Some never reaching me, this book was shipped out immediately. We received yesterday, along with a personalized note from the author. This copy was a hard covered book which we are so glad because I think we will definitely be reading this every single night until halloween.
I read this book to my 6-year-old daughter last night and when we got to the end she asked me to read it again. When I got to the end of the second reading she announced she had an idea about drawing the monsters from the book, the illustrations are just perfect. She loved the book from front to back, but this is one of the only times my short-attention-span kid has asked for the same book twice in a row and the first time a book as inspired such a burst of creativity.
This book would be great for all sorts of ages: from very little kids to older kids and the cute illustrations.
Don't hesitate to order this one, your kids will want to hear it over and over.
I received an autographed copy of Spooky Things by Katelyn Sinclair (it's children's book) through the Goodreads First Reads Giveaway Program today.
I loved reading Spooky Things by Katelyn Sinclair!! It's the perfect children's book for Halloween. The illustrations/pictures in this book are really well done, but best of all is the Halloween themed poem (iambic tetrameter) that comprises the Halloween themed story in this book.
I received this book through a goodreads giveaway. Its an enjoyable, cleverly written short story with illustrations that children from three to a hundred and three will love and be entertained by.
Great story! The pictures and story itself are very kid friendly; the words all rhyme, which is good for kids. I don't know how to explain why the pictures are so appealing, but they are! The book is also a bound in a nice hard cover, so it should survive tons of readings with your kids! I also like that at the end of the book, there is a page explaining the rhythm that the author intended for the book to have. Note: I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.
I loved this book. So colorful, the illustrations were way beyond what I expected to see.
The really cool part of winning this book is that the author sent it off fast. Even a personal note. The book was wrapped so it was not damaged I am impressed with that.
This book is great for maybe a 5-6 year old, I am guessing. The story , poem of this book is very appealing.
The fabulous way it is written is that you can read at a walking pace. There is an underlying rhythm of the poem.
If you cannot imagine what I am saying, well listen to Katelyn read another of her books, "The Golden Bell" another poem of her with this rhythm. www.katelynsinclair.com. This book should be in the little one's tick or treat bag, this is the real treat!
Spooky Things is a fantastic book for young readers. It's suggested to read the book in a rhythm...iambic tetrameter. I read the book to myself, had such fun, I then went to see a neighbor that is in kindergarten. We read the book together. What a hoot. She loved it. This is a great book to read with youngsters, modeling for them, and letting them read, too. Not to mention, the great story. What a great Halloween gift! Thanks Katelyn and Goodreads First Reads.
So cute! I received this book a few days ago and read it to twin girls that I nanny. The book was perfect for all things fall and Halloween. The words flow amazingly when reading to a child and the illustrations were very cute. I recently found out I am going to be an aunt and I can't wait to read this book to him/her! P.S. I did receive this book from a giveaway
This is a really cute Halloween book perfect for my kids' ages. My 8-year old read it to my 3-year old yesterday, and then today I read it to my 6-year old. The rhymes make it fun to read and the illustrations are adorable. This will be a staple for us for Halloweens to come.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. My opinion is just that...mine...and completely unbiased.
Kid approved! My 6 year old granddaughter loves this delightfully spooky read. Wonderful illustrations and a charming story have already made this a well-read book on our shelves.
very cute Halloween book.Written for 3-8 year olds. Ryhming cuplets about scary things. Gave it to my 5 year old nece and she has read it over and over again.
This book is awesome! I can't wait to give it to my grandson. It looks scary but it just puts you in a Halloween mood. Thank you Katelyn Sinclair for the Goodreads giveaway! A+ for this read!
My daughter read this book and loved it. She got excited for Halloween after reading it. She(and me) loved the pictures. She read it to her brother and he loved it as well.
This is a cute book that shows spooky things like ghosts, witches, cats, bats and other spooky things having fun at Halloween time. Nothing is shown as being frightening and the "Spooky Things" get together to have a party every year at Halloween time. A fun time is had by all. The illustrations are very colorful and I loved the rhyming pattern. A great book for Halloween time! I got this for free in a Goodreads Giveaway.
This is a wonderful Halloween book intended to be read aloud. The book is written in poetry format. I think it is a perfect choice to read to your children this Halloween. I received a signed, hardcover edition as a Goodreads giveaway.
