Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is an American playwright, screenwriter, and comic book writer best known for his work for Marvel Comics and for the television series Glee, Big Love, Riverdale, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He is Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics. Aguirre-Sacasa grew up liking comic books, recalling in 2003, "My mom would take us out to the 7-Eleven on River Road during the summer, and we would get Slurpees and buy comics off the spinning rack. I would read them all over and over again, and draw my own pictures and stuff." He began writing for Marvel Comics, he explained, when "Marvel hired an editor to find new writers, and they hired her from a theatrical agency. So she started calling theaters and asking if they knew any playwrights who might be good for comic books. A couple of different theaters said she should look at me. So she called me, I sent her a couple of my plays and she said 'Great, would you like to pitch on a couple of comic books in the works?'" His first submissions were "not what [they were] interested in for the character[s]" but eventually he was assigned an 11-page Fantastic Four story, "The True Meaning of...," for the Marvel Holiday Special 2004. He went on to write Fantastic Four stories in Marvel Knights 4, a spinoff of that superhero team's long-running title; and stories for Nightcrawler vol. 3; The Sensational Spider-Man vol. 2; and Dead of Night featuring Man-Thing. In May 2008 Aguirre-Sacasa returned to the Fantastic Four with a miniseries tie-in to the company-wide "Secret Invasion" storyline concerning a years-long infiltration of Earth by the shape-shifting alien race, the Skrulls, and an Angel Revelations miniseries with artists Barry Kitson and Adam Polina, respectively. He adapted for comics the Stephen King novel The Stand.
In 2013, he created Afterlife with Archie, depicting Archie Andrews in the midst of a zombie apocalypse; the book's success led to Aguirre-Sacasa being named Archie Comics' chief creative officer.
The Riverdale gang (or what's left of them) are fighting their way to a (hopefully) safe place. But to get to "safety" it means leaving Lodge Manor and heading out into the zombie-infested wilds, and making Archie an even bigger enemy of Mr. Lodge.
Betty starts a new diary and tries to write down her memories of the past - including the ones of her (now) missing sister Polly. It also appears that she and Archie are getting a little too close for comfort in Veronica's eyes.
Speaking of reminiscing, we get a peek at the twisted family ties between Jason and Cheryl Blossom. Ewww.
The issue ends on a cliffhanger after things come to a head with Betty & Veronica and Archie is forced to step in, only to have the moment derailed by Cheryl who appears to be over her twincestuous relationship with Jason.
There is also a bonus story they pulled from the Chilling Adventures in Sorcery vault called The Gentlest Dog on the Block.
A man has a loveable dog who is prone to jump on people. He takes him out one day and the dog jumps on a fortune teller after he chases her cat into her stall. Uh oh. She curses him to become DEATH to all who love him! First, he gives the guy's wife a shove down the stairs. And immediately following her funeral, he gives his owner the same treatment.
The moral of the story? Teach your dog not to jump on strangers.
Yes! Back to the zombies! 😍 The Cheryl/Jason plot is crazy but interesting. I'm beginning to see a lot of influence for the show Riverdale in this series. I can't wait to see where this will all end up.
This was a great edition and I can't wait to see where this story goes. It's dark, gritty yet still has that brightness in the art style that screams Archie comics.
I'm really intrigued on what set Cheryl to kill his brother Jason and what does she mean that her name is no longer Cheryl but it's Blaze. Also, the part where the twins are in the woods and Cheryl mentioned her puppy Sugar when they were young; Jason said that the puppy died because of choking on her own leash. But base from the silhouette in that comic strip, it looks like Jason killed Sugar and maybe Cheryl was even thinking that it's her twin brother who did it.
I'm eager to know why Jason was liked that to her twin and what set Cheryl to murder him. Hopefully it would be revealed sooner in the succeeding comics in this series.
Starts off boring as HELL with Betty recreating her old diaries, like that's seriously what you are doing at the end of the world??? Veronica is Queen Bitch because Archie has stopped shaving and is apparently more attractive to the girls of Riverdale than ever. He seems to have chosen Betty... for the time being.
We are given another peek into the Jason/Cheryl relationship. Jason totally killed Cheryl's dog because it was competition for her attention, but he gets what he deserves courtesy of Cheryl it appears. Once again Cheryl gets to be the HBIC we all know and love and you KNOW I'm here for it.
YESSSS. Number 7 returns back to the gang as they are on the run trying to get away from the zombies. Betty is writing in her journal and thinking of her sister unsure of if she's alive or dead and we're shown glimpses of the past and how she met Archie and Veronica. We're also shown a small glimpse of Cheryl and her brothers life before the outbreak and it's very....incesty.

Omg omg omg!!!! i didn't think id care about a minor character but whats the story of Cheryl and her "brother"? are they having an incest affair? is she ever his sister? and the name she gave at the end, who is it?
Also, small reminder, Veronica is a bitch. Thank you for coming to my ted talk
Fra alti e bassi la storia procede, questa volta con una degna chiusura di capitolo sebbene ci siano tante cose che vanno fuori dal senso comune, dei veri e propri buchi di trama riempibili eliminando un personaggio o due palesemente di troppo.
+FINALLY, Jason is dead. Or should I say Cheryl killed her twin brother? Which, by the way, he deserves it. Because he killed Cheryl's dog. HA! Karma's a bitch.
+Speaking of BITCH. I hope Veronica will be next. haha
+It feels like reading TWD. Both have spectacular artwork.

I love seeing the gang several weeks after the apocalypse started, it's great to see how it's changed everyone! Wow, that cliffhanger is amazing, I'm excited to read what happens next!
What's up with the Blossoms? They could not be weirder. Well, they likely can although I think puppy killer Jason got what he deserved. This is one Thanksgiving I'll take a pass on.
Dark Archie. Grown-up Archie. No silliness, no teen-age angst. A really different view of everyone's best friend Archie. Well worth the time reading the series.
Good but leaning too heavily into the Betty/Veronica rivalry which while a staple of the comics has always tired me. But I’m glad Cheryl has dealt with Jason.
Now that the story's moved out of Riverdale, things are a lot more interesting. The focus is off the zombies this time and on how things are affecting the gang. I particularly like the flashbacks with Betty trying not to face her current reality. She's really starting to feel like a Stephen King character, especially with the dark revelations about her sister.
One of the least violent issues, but also my favorite one yet. I loved that it was from Betty's perspective and the style the author utilized brought me right into the story through her character. I liked the idea of her recreating a lost journal and delving into past events while the present unfolds.
Update: And by complete and utter coincidence, I reread the Thanksgiving issue on Thanksgiving.
So Betty is being a teen and writing her emotions on paper. We dive into her life with sis Polly, death and loss from Jugdead's reign, and her secret time with Archie. Princess veronica is being all jelly. meanwhile folks are dreaming of Sabrina's honeymoon I think. Weird. On top of it all, the Blossom siblings got a Flowers in the Attic relationship minus Cheryl liking it.
Archie and the gang are on the move and we get Betty's backstory with her sister Polly who I never knew she even had! Archie and Betty have grown closer much to Veronica's chagrin. And a brother and sister have a very Flowers in the Attic type relationship until the sister decides to off her brother completely.
It's frustrating to keep waiting for each issue. The Thanksgiving one was released a week before Christmas. Will the Christmas edition be released just in time for Valentine's Day?
