Neve Colvin isn’t good enough. As an introvert, her life is a never-ending list of labels and criticism. Pressures to change come from everyone—including the one person she thought would love her unconditionally … her mother. All Neve wants is acceptance, but surrounded by extroverts it’s a wish that’s nearly impossible to fulfil.

For Neve there’s only one solution: anyone disapproving must go. Even if it means only one person will remain.

That person is her lifelong friend Blake Reynolds. He’s seen the fights with her mum, the breakdowns caused by attacks on her personality, and the battles for acceptance. Each time she is left shattered and questioning who she is, he’s the one to collect the pieces of her broken heart. Shielding her from the cruelty is his only concern. But how can he protect her when Neve is concealing a secret so dark?

Blake thinks he knows everything about her, and with their relationship developing, he assumes Neve trusts him fully. However, there is one memory Neve is too ashamed of to share. Revealing it will test Blake’s loyalty beyond what she could ever ask, and Blake is the only friend she can’t afford to lose. He’s the one person capable of dragging her from the darkness plaguing her, but with pressures to conform increasing, even Blake may not be enough to pull her back this time.

TITLE: Not Enough
AUTHOR: Mia Hoddell
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
RELEASE DATE: November 16th, 2015

MY RATING: 4 STARS

I've not read anything by this author before but during my stalking of AMAZON this book kind of stuck out, the cover calls to you, but the synopsis grabs you..

As I start this you get that strong connection coming through with these two childhood friends, Blake has always been there for her, puts her needs above anyone else, and accepts her for herself, not what society expects of what is normal of a 21 year old female. The story definitely captures you, you can feel the underlying unease, sadness behind the words everytime her mother is mentioned.

Not Enough: is the story of a twenty one year old girl named Neve who is an introverted artist who is misunderstood and abused by her mother and those closest to her for being different. The only constant in her life is her childhood friend Blake.

Blake then proceeds to offer Neve a room at his place if she ever needs an escape, not expecting that day to come sooner than he anticipated, they have to end up sharing his room, and bed..

From BESTFRIENDS to LOVERS

I don’t know what I’d do without Blake in my life. Through everything he has been the only solid consistency. When all of my friends turned their back on me, he stayed. When my mum started putting me down, he was there to pick up all of the pieces and offer me a place to stay.

People like me, we aren't accepted in society. We are classed as weird and outcasts because certain situations are not particularly enjoyable. People call me anti-social because of it, they call me depressed, quiet, reserved, shy, and many other names I'd rather not remember, yet none of them take the time to get to know me.

“You’ll forever be Stripes. It’s cute and suits you.” ~ Blake

“We were coming home from primary school one day and she tripped. When she got up she was covered in dust but it looked stripey. The name kind of stuck from then on”

I loved Blake's character, always supportive, always there trying to cheer her up whenever she was down, always there whenever she needed him..Always there!! Such a powerful, thought provoking story that I guess anyone of us could relate to..

This is my first Hoddell read and I have to say that I really enjoyed her writing style. Her characters, especially Blake really warmed my heart and felt life like to me. I never questioned their motives or actions and it was a lot of fun getting to know them and to like them.

And while this story was emotional and I did enjoy it, the believability factor, for me, was never there. I don't know if that is because like the main character, I too, tend to be more of an introvert and have never, never, encountered the type of problems and harassment that she did in this story, or whether, I don't know, something about it just didn't work for me, but because of it, I had a really hard time connecting with Neve sometimes.

I adored her emails to herself though and those were the parts of the story that really grabbed me. Because regardless of the realistic factor or not, this book was full of wonderful, uplifting messages that had me slightly teary eyed at times and kept me reading on. And Blake, he stole the show. He really was the most amazing friend to her (and his family as well!) in this story and I loved him immediately and he too, made it worth reading.

Overall, this wasn't a bad read at all and like I mentioned, it really was well written and the messages about being yourself and not letting anyone change who you are or validate you as a person, were really beautiful and well done and because of that and the fact that I had to know how it ended, I'm giving this four stars because truly, any author that can make you want to finish a story even if you aren't connecting to it, deserves to have her work praised.

I was asked to review this book by the author, Mia Hoddell and I couldn't refuse. It sounded like just my kind of story. I love getting swept into other people's worlds and I won't lie, I was totally consumed by Neve and Blake's story.
As a girl who has always felt she isn't good enough, doesn't fit in anywhere and is fed up of being called 'quiet' and 'introverted', as though those labels make someone a bad person or someone people don't want to befriend, I can totally see where Neve is coming from. I grew up not fitting in with my family. I had several groups of friends as I felt I didn't really fit in with any one clique at school. I was quiet, shy, introverted. I didn't act like most of my friends. Whilst they were out doing whatever it is young girls do, I was behind closed doors in my bedroom with a book in hand. I was far happier in my own company than in large crowds of people. Why? I really don't know. I'm still the same as a 32 year old woman. I have a small, close group of friends - in time, you come to realise that you can count your true friends on one hand, at least in my case.
So I know how it feels to be branded the 'freak' because I wasn't into make-up, shopping, boys... all the 'normal' things that girls my age were into. But what is normal? Who decides what's normal and what isn't? Some people are extroverted and surround themselves with like-minded people. Some are introverted and keep more to themselves. If you can find the right balance in your friends, they help you see that being introverted isn't abnormal, it isn't wrong, it's just who and what you are. That's what I have now. I have people who accept me as I am and as for the rest, I cut them dead a long time ago because they couldn't let me be me. There was always something wrong with me, in their minds. But I'm just me. Take me or leave me. I am what I am, and I don't need to keep making excuses for my behaviour just because I'm different.
Neve Colvin is a hell of a lot like me. It's almost as though Mia Hoddell stood in my shoes and wrote about my life. So many things in this story paralleled real-life. Neve is a character that I easily formed a connection with. Seeing her character traits reflect my own was something that tugged at my emotions and drew me right in with her.
Neve grew up with an extroverted mother, a larger than life family, people who were the exact opposite of her. And because she was 'different' they always told her that there was something wrong with her. She grew up believing she was never good enough. Why couldn't her family and friends accept who for who she was? A clash of personalities, her mother always looked down her nose at Neve and belittled her very existence because she was quiet, shy, preferred the company of her best friend Blake to anyone else. Why was that? Because Blake accepted her for who she was. He never made her feel like she wasn't good enough to be friends with. Quite the opposite, Blake always encouraged Neve to just be Neve.
Moving out of home was one of the best things she decided to do. Although her mother could still make her feel like dirt, it was from a distance. Change was in the air for Neve, it was just a question of when. How would her life play out if she got from under the influence of her mother? That's something you'll have to find out by picking up a copy of Not Enough for yourself.

This story tugged at my heartstrings, played on my every emotion. It was a beautifully written story of how an introverted young girl blossoms into a beautiful young woman. It's almost a 'coming of age' story, where she discovers what real-life is like once you start to make your own decisions.

Such an AMAZING READ. Thank you Mia Hoddell for writing this ! ♥

Review Update !

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Heartbreaking.Powerful.Real

This book has stunned me in so many ways. What I wasn't prepared for was knowing how much I could possibly be loving this book. I literally lived the pages, not read them. I know how it feels to always feel not good enough, always be criticized. Give this book to introverts and they'll fall for it instantly.

It's so well and beautifully written, it is more than just another YA novel. This book is meant to open people's eyes as to what an introvert is and what it actually means - being one is not a problem, or an issue or an illness. It is just the way someone is born. We aren't the ones who choose the way we are born, all we can do is learn to accept the way we or the others are.

Not Enough is the story of a young girl named Neve, who had to bear her mother's criticism, awful comments or powerful words for all of her life. She's always made her feel like she isn't good enough no matter what she did or achieved. For her mum, all that really mattered was for her to go out, spend time around people,building up a life for her - a life that didn't make Neve happy.

Good thing though, she had Blake, her lifetime best friend who stood by her everytime. Helped her pick up the broken pieces of her heart, soul and dreams. What Blake does not know is that Neve wanted to take her life once. Afraid that if she would tell him all of her darkest fears and thoughts that are going on he'll leave, she decides to keep it all a secret until time felt right.

If you want to know how their story will end, you MUST READ the book. But prepare yourself cause you'll need some tissues along the way.

Review by Susan on behalf of Ladies Living in Bookland:

Neve and Blake have known one another since they were babies. But being so entirely different was what lead them to be the very best of friends.

But Blake's upbringing was entirely different to Neve's. He has a warm and welcoming family whereas Neve's mother was a real piece of work...

Excerpt:
A person can take a lot of verbal abuse, but there's always a limit.
Everyone breaks.
Everyone crumbles.

Their relationship was complex and what sometimes read as teenage angst turned out to be nothing more than lack of acceptance and non existent maternal love for Neve. A single child with no father to depend on.

Excerpt:
Why is everything I do not good enough? Why is who I am not enough for you?

The one person she has always been able to depend on is Blake. Childhood friends...bit would they ever be more? Irrelevant, Blake would be by her side, when no one else would. He helps her through her darkest moments and picks up the pieces when Neve's mother breaks her on almost every occasion...

Excerpt:
There's nothing more I want than for my mum to look me in the eye and say she's proud of me. That's it. I don't care if she never says she loves me, but to know she accepts me for who I am...well, it would mean everything.

A heartbreaking read that sometimes had me close to tears but all in all a good story which for me means that blood isn't always thicker the water and that we can cant choose our family. With dual perspectives we get a good basis and I loved Mia Hoddell's writing and her descriptiveness of some of Neve's darker memories.

A brill HEA and would definitely recommend.

Mia Hoddell has a way of writing beautiful stories which engage her readers’ emotions and Not Enough is probably the best of her books so far.
Neve’s story reaches out to those of us who don’t fit a mould; the introverts and social outcasts. I genuinely felt a connection to Neve and the openness and honesty of the emails she sends to a private account. As readers, we appreciate how personal this story is to Mia Hoddell and this is reflected in the range of emotions she makes us feel; sadness, anger, sympathy, and hope.
Whilst Not Enough chronicles Neve’s very difficult relationship with her mother we are grateful for the constant presence of Blake, the story’s second protagonist. Blake’s narrative alternates with Neve’s and he helps us to see Neve’s character through kinder eyes than her own. Blake is the only person who accepts Neve unconditionally and we are thankful for the love he shows her.
Not Enough shows how Mia Hoddell’s writing has matured, particularly in the way that the author has clearly invested part of herself in Neve and the story. This may be a HEA but I love the fact that Mia Hoddell’s heroines are never perfect and it is this ‘realness’ which makes Not Enough a must read.

(From the dedication at the beginning up to the end this was both a thought provoking and an emotional read for me and I loved it!)

INITIAL THOUGHTS
After receiving the request from Mia Hoddell to read her book and reading the blurb for this book I immediately felt the urge to read the book and learn about Neve's story. Having not read any of Mia's other titles I wasn't sure what to expect but was looking forward to finding out.

MY REVIEW
I received a free e-arc directly from the author in exchange for my honest review. The cover features a female (I'd say Neve) sitting on the floor, scrunched up knees up, head down on them, hiding and shrinking away from something or someone? The cover certainly draws you in, you want to comfort the female on the cover, to find out what's wrong and hep her fix the problem. So would the cover make me pick this one up from a bookstore shelf? I think the answer has to be yes, as I know the cover would attract my attention and tug my curiosity so I'd pick the book up to learn more.
Now to do the main body of my review, I'll be totally honest this is the third time I've tried to write this section of my review. I'm really finding it difficult to write, I want to tell you so much about this book and it's characters that I don't know where to start! I also do not wish to reveal the whole plot either, which is very difficult because I could seriously ramble on and on for ages about this book. It's not easy to choose just what to tell you about and what to leave out whist at the same time explaining how captivating this book really was.
So here goes, again, the central character in this book are Neve Colvin, and Blake Reynolds. Neve Colvin is a quiet, reserved, private sort of person, who takes time to "warm up" to people and I'd say she feels like an outcast in her own family. Neve's mother is a vociferous, opinionated woman, probably described as the "life and soul of the party" and her family are louder, very outgoing, partying types. The extrovert nature of Neve's family emphasizes the fact she is not exactly like them. Neve's mother and family regularly voice there their opinion that she needs to socialise more, to go out more etc be more like "normal" women her age! Neve has finished school and lost contact with the majority of her friends, only keeping track of them via Facebook and the photographs of the places and parties they attend and do not ask her to. Blake Reynolds is the only true, loyal friend who doesn't try and tell her she should change, and simply accepts her the way she is. Blake knows everything about Neve. . . .well there is just one thing. . . a secret that is so dark, Neve doesn't dare tell Blake. If he knew. . . well if he knew maybe even he would abandon her.
Blake Reynolds is a kind hearted, patient, good looking guy. He love's to make Neve smile, and regularly calls her stripes, the nickname he gave her when they were at school together. Blake knows the private Neve that she prefers to keep hidden from most. He know how much her mother can truly upset Neve with her critical words and selfish actions. Blake is the one that picks up the broken pieces and carefully glues her back together to be ready for the next battle in an ever raging war with her mothers opinions on how her daughter should be. Consequently Neve's mother isn't overly keen on Blake as he always seems to manage to come to Neve's rescue and be a support to her when she most needs him.
It's whilst catching up over a milkshake that Blake having his own place asks Neve if she would be interested in moving in, making a story up about his latest lodger. Blake is aware that Neve's mothers criticism is becoming more and more difficult for Neve to tolerate. Blake actually presents the offer to Neve in a way which will make Neve think she is doing him a favour too. Neve kind of laughs the invite off, but Blake insists the offer is there should she ever want to leave her disparaging mother behind. Before the friends can say anymore on the subject a female "friend" of Neve's called Cece (who is also overly generous with her critical opinions and remarks) barrels into the conversation, and railroads Neve into going out that evening with her to a club, even though it's clearly the last place Neve wants to go.
It is whilst Neve is on the night out with Cece, that an incident pushes Neve into finay making a large change in her life. The incident occurs when Neve and Cece are at the club together. Cece ends up more or less dumping Neve to go enjoy herself dancing. Neve is left at the mercy of two rather aggressive drunks. Thankfully Neve has her phone and texts Blake to ask him to come pick her up, but will he see the text as he is out on a date himself? and if he see's the text will he get to the club in time?. The incident really shakes up Neve, however her ordeal isn't over because when she arrives home to what should be her safe haven, her mother is in a mood and starts ranting at Neve telling her what a disappointment she is and how she isn't normal, she should socialise more, she should want to go out more. This is the final straw for Neve, and in the heat of the moment, ends up packing some clothes and belongings and taking up Blake on the offer of a room at his place. It's only once she arrives at Blake's place that she finds out that there is no room to stay in, she see's through Blake's made up story about the guy, called Robbie is still renting the room. So where can Neve stay? Blake eventually comes up with the idea of them sharing his room and bed. He say's after all it would be no different than when they shared a room when she stayed over at his parents house when they were kids. Though initially embarrassed at sharing his bed, Neve agree's and it becomes a regular arrangement.
So I think I've given you the basic's of the plot, though I could ramble on much more about this book. I love the character's of Neve and Blake and their unconditional friendship they share. I felt that I could really relate to Neve and her problems and insecurities. I think Blake will be going on plenty of Book Boyfriend lists too! I also became fond of Robbie, Blake's housemate, who actually becomes another source of support for Neve.
I knew I was going to fall in love with this book when I read the dedication at the very beginning of the book, "For anyone who has ever been told that they're too quiet, too shy or just not good enough". To say I identified with this dedication, and then went on to empathise with Neve as a character is an understatement, in fact I remember feeling out of place at social gatherings, being told I was too introverted all the way through school and having family members tell me I should go out more etc etc. I found the book to be an emotionally charged read, I really felt Neve's annoyance at being told to be more "normal" and her frustration at not being able to explain to her mother how the insults and criticism was badly affecting her.
One of my favourite parts in the book is when Blake takes Neve to his parents for Christmas. Blake is so sneaky and knows how Neve's mind works so keeps certain aspects of the visit home secret until the very last moment. I loved the whole bow on top of Neve's head incident. Though you go into some dark places with Neve there are also some lighter, fun moments in the book too.
So did I enjoy the book? I thoroughly enjoyed it, I found it to be a both captivating and addictive read! Would I recommend the book? Definitely! I wouldn't have said I am normally a big fan of the contemporary/romance genre but this book has opened my eyes wider to perhaps encourage me to try more titles from this genre. Would I want to read a book two, about these characters? If there was to be another book in the series, I would certainly want to read about and catch up with these characters. Having said that I think how the book ended suggests this is more of a standalone title.
Would I want to read more titles by Mia Hoddell after reading this book? I think I will most likely read more titles by this author. I enjoyed how she kept me engaged and interested all the way through the book.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Amazing thought provoking emotional read. I certainly identified with Neve. I'd definitely love to have my very own Blake!

Not Enough follows the story of Neve Colvin, an introverted artist who is seriously misunderstood and abused by her family. Only one person seems to be ok with her quiet nature, and that’s her best friend Blake. Blake’s always been there for her, or at least, that’s what she’s always told him. But he doesn’t know the extent of the darkness in her past; and if she can help it, he never will.

Teaser 4

Not Enough may use a familiar formula, but that doesn’t make it any less important or enjoyable to read. There isn’t necessarily much new here; the story is about a quiet girl abused by her awful mother, who is ‘saved’ by a guy she’s always liked, and therefore moves on into a better life with him, away from her past. But stories like Neve’s are important, especially for people like me who have never had to face the kind of things people in Neve’s position have had to face. It reminds us to be sympathetic and kind to everyone we meet, because you never know what they may be going through. It also helps us remember that it’s not bad if someone is different from you. It doesn’t make them less of a person if they don’t like the things you like. It just makes them different.

Blake is certainly an immensely likable character; he’s confident, but not alpha male cocky. He’s sweet and adorable and cares about Neve above all else. He knows the importance of communicating, and he isn’t about to let Neve’s bitterness fester. Neve, on the other hand, is not nearly as likable, although I didn’t dislike her. She’s going through some really tough stuff with a verbally abusive mother, and that would make anyone stressed and sullen and miserable.

teaser 15

Admirably, Neve puts on a brave face and tries to be happy for much of the book. You are in her head so you know that she's really not happy, but she does try keep moving on with her life, even though things are crumbling around her.

Neve’s journey from self-loathing to self respect is a rocky road, but wouldn’t it be for anyone? That’s why it’s a book worth reading, because it’s a story many of us can relate to. I found the ‘introvert vs. extrovert’ theme very interesting as well, as that’s not a huge theme in YA/NA, but it’s a very important one. Introverts are often completely misunderstood by extroverts (I’ve had this happen plenty in my own life), and while I’m not putting the blame solely on extroverts, it’s far rarer that I see an extrovert being completely misunderstood by an introvert. Neve likes to do introvert things, not going to clubs, or dating random guys. Her mother refuses to even try to understand her daughter, instead pushing for her to do all of these things that make Neve immensely uncomfortable. A huge theme of the book wasn’t even pointing the finger at anyone, it was just about communicating, and how that communication can lead to a better understand of people who are different from you. Which is always an important theme to promote.

This is a love story, both between Neve and Blake, and Neve and herself. The romance is adorable, two friends growing closer, but Neve learning to stand up for herself was the more powerful part of the story. The romance was just the icing on the cake.

Not Enough is a great next read for fans of Katie McGarry and Simone Elkeles. It follows characters dealing with real issues and dealing with them in healthy, honestly quiet mature ways. If Mia Hoddell is not already on your Kindle, you should head on over to Amazon right now to remedy that tragedy. You won’t regret it.

It's one thing that my biological mother pushed me beyond my limits by abusing me for my blindness and autism. But the main character Neve, was abused for being an introvert? Not cool. That's not even nearly as bad as the things my mom had against me. It's just a different personality. It's no wonder why Neve has kept her walls up, even around her best friend Blake, because the last thing she ever wants is to lose him. I completely relate to Neve with the extreme amount of contrast she received when she and Blake visited his family for Christmas, and how welcoming his family was to her. From my own experience, you may never conceptually understand that a situation you have been in, is as bad as it truly is, until you experience the opposite. I'm adopted, believe me, I know all about contrast, and how the revelation of it can trigger how bad you really had it. I was also frustrated with how Neve kept wanting to pay her mother a visit, kept hoping that her mother would come around, when she knew logically that her mother never would, and Blake warned her not to go back there. She had been so happy living with Blake, I was pretty frustrated with how much she still cared and hoped for a possible new relationship with her mom. Anyhow, I really loved how Neve and Blake eventually fell in love with one another. I thought that the story was very well-written. What a special man she has in her life, not only he's the love of her life, but he freaking saved her from literally everything.

I received an advanced reader’s copy of Not Enough from the author in exchange for an honest review. This story begins with a woman named Neve who is in her early twenties and very depressed. Being introverted and not very social, she stays at home a lot—attempting to start up her own business through graphic design. Her family is very degrading and unable to understand her personality because they are all very different from her—they all have extroverted personalities and demand social acceptance from everyone around them. But, Neve is happy just being herself. She doesn’t need the friends, because she has the one friend who loves her for who she really is. Blake is that friend, but when one argument makes her feel alone and desperate, she realizes that her friend has become something more in her mind and heart. Does he feel the same way about her? What happens to their friendship if she decides to open herself up to that vulnerability?

My favorite character is Blake. Neve has too many issues that I can relate too, which makes it very difficult to cast her as a favorite. Blake is the knight in shining armor and the best friend that anyone would love to have. He has known Neve since they were toddlers, but she still holds back and keeps her deepest secrets away from him as a shield from sharing her pain. He is smart and very confident about himself. He had a completely different life growing up, be he cares about Neve more than she understands—she always tells him that she doesn’t deserve him. On the other side of the spectrum, I absolutely detest her mother. She is very disrespectful of Neve’s personality and unsympathetic. Her anger fuels the fire and causes several conversations to turn into arguments, but nothing ever gets resolved between the two. Neve must learn to choose who she believes is her family, blood for acceptance.

I really enjoyed this book, but there were a few things that caused me to pause and dwell on my feelings for a few minutes. Even though most of the story was justifiable in the words written within the pages of this book, some instances felt like huge exaggerations. I absolutely adored the way that Blake’s family treated Neve. While I do understand the introverted perspective all-too-well, social acceptance is tremendously difficult and exhausting at best. Social awkwardness is overly present, except with comfortable surroundings. This author does a superb job with character development and emotional credibility. While I found a vast amount of grammatical and spelling errors, this was a copy received before the publish date and I cannot be judgmental of context without knowing if the final production had been re-edited. I enjoyed the quick pace of the read and found it very easy to see the scenes in my mind. I would recommend this story to those who enjoy young adult and psychological fiction. I rate this book with four stars and look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

“I’m always going to feel responsible for you, Stripes. I’ve felt it’s my job to look out for you since we were six and Aaron Slates stole your ice-cream. I don’t care how many times I have to pick you up as long as you’re by my side at the end of it and I can still make you happy.”

Neve and Blake have been friends since their early childhood, but they grew up with completely different life styles. Blake knew what it was like to be loved. Neve, on the other hand, has never felt like she was enough. Neve's family never showed her what belonging and being loved felt like. They always showed her the complete opposite. Her dad was never around and her mom has always put her down, which caused Neve to believe that no one would ever truly love her.

Blake has always known that there was something about Neve that wasn't right. He can see the pain behind her eyes, and he would do anything in his power to to make her happy. Blake knows that Neve has never really been happy in her life. So, when he asked her to leave the life she has lived, and start a new one with him, he notices the difference he brings into Neve's life. When she starts changing for the better and looks happier, he has never felt more complete.

"This is how I like to see her, carefree and happy. It’s rare nowadays that I catch a glimpse of Neve when she’s truly happy, but in this moment there isn’t a strained muscle in her body. It’s natural, and I can’t stop myself from watching her. I’m still amazed that I’m the one who can bring out her joy and it baffles me that she’s allowed herself to be mine."

I really liked Blake and Neve's relationship. I loved that even before they got together he was always there to protect her and constantly trying to bring out her smile. Blake helped Neve become a better person and made her believe in herself and enjoy the women that she was. As a couple, they were cute together and I was happy to see Neve come out of her shell and live the happy life that she really deserves!

Solid 5 Out Of 5 Stars

Not Enough was a near-immaculate portrayal of life as an introvert and the misconceptions that accompany the personality type. Being an introvert myself, I immediately identified with Neve and felt heartbreak with her as people proved themselves unworthy of her trust over and over. Unfortunately, that happens way too often in the lives of those who are simply different, and Mia Hoddell captured those feelings of rejection and disappointment perfectly.

Blake was the ideal friend every introvert dreams about and wishes they had. He was caring, understanding, and he knew when to back off. He never pushed Neve beyond the limits he knew she had, and he encouraged her to let go of people who were toxic. There were so many amazing messages in this book. I seriously cannot recommend it enough, especially to fellow introverts. Neve's introversion was a little extreme at times, but there is a spectrum of introversion/extroversion, and I'm sure many can identify with the need to just enjoy yourself as you please from time to time without being judged for it.

Incredible premise, incredible book, and I will be reading more by this author. Well done!

Amazing read

This book was not what I was expecting. Mia had a way of writing on a sensitive subject without making it into a sob story. She delivered the message beautifully, each chapter held a powerful punch. A story about the power of friendship, loyalty and what love really means.

Good story

Its a very good story but I felt it ended abruptly. There was a lot more that could of been added to the story. Other than that, it would of got 5 stars from me.

It's taken me way too long to read a novel by Mia Hoddell! Her books have been on my TBR for a long time, and now that I've read Not Enough, I'm doubly excited to get started reading more of her work.

Not Enough's synopsis called out to me - I'm an introvert and have felt the effects of others not understanding what that truly means, although not to the extent the main character, Neve, feels. I believe there's a spectrum when it comes to determining whether you're an introvert or an extrovert. Rather than someone being 100% introverted or 100% extroverted, we fall somewhere on the spectrum, with some of us closer to one end or the other while still others fall somewhere in the middle.

I fall closer to the introvert end of the spectrum, but there are situations where I can identify with being an extrovert. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty in the case of Neve, her character is probably an extreme case of introversion. The way people in her life treated her was abysmal, especially her own mother. Thank God she had Blake, whom I'll get to in a moment.

Cece is briefly introduced in the beginning, and wow, what a piece of work she is! Cece says things I would never say to someone who's supposedly my friend, and I couldn't understand why Neve bothered with her. Possibly low self esteem, which Neve definitely struggled with. Let me list the ways in which Cece is a TERRIBLE person!

1. Encourages Neve to drink alcohol until she's trashed
2. Encourages Neve to pick a random guy for sex
3. Berates Neve when Neve doesn't do exactly what she wants her to do
4. Doesn't care about Neve's safety or well being AT ALL

I could go on.

Cece does the opposite of slut shaming to Neve. I didn't know there was such a thing. And I couldn't believe when the words, "You should have wanted it. Everyone else would have," fell from Cece's lips. REALLY??? Wow...just wow... I probably would've decked her.

Even sadder? Neve's mom basically encourages those same things.

The thing is, Neve envies people who can let loose and have fun, in a safe way of course. I envy those people, too. I'd love to go to a club and dance like no one's watching. That sounds like a lot of fun to me. Like Neve, I worry about being laughed at, which doesn't sound like a big deal even if it happened, but for people like me and Neve, it would crush us. It's a legitimate fear that causes her to freeze up.

Blake is the bright spot in Neve's life. Man, when I say he's there for her, he's REALLY there for her! We all need a little more Blake in our lives. The chapters alternate between Neve's POV and Blake's POV, and I really liked knowing what he was thinking. It helped flesh out his character and made him more realistic, plus I fell just a bit more in love with him hearing his thoughts and feelings.

As for the huge secret Neve's been shouldering, I can understand why she wouldn't want to share that. People don't react well to something like that, especially if they've never been through it. There's a huge stigma, which is sad because then the people who need help don't always get it because their fears outweigh their hope.

Not Enough is a well-told, heartbreaking story that delivers a punch to the gut and makes you fervently wish for Neve's hope to outweigh her. You'll root for Blake and Neve to see what they have in each other and that the beauty of their friendship could bloom into so much more.

**Review copy provided from the Blog Tour

Not Enough begins with the protagonist as a vulnerable character who is Neve Colvin, as the book portrays her life and how it has been treating her particularly her mom. Her life seems to be as if it's not even her own when she feels controlled by her mom as her mom makes assumptions of how her life's supposed to be lived. Neve struggles to find herself where she truly fits in a world where she can feel comfortable, completely at peace with herself. As she looks up and down for the right person who would finally understand every thing that's of her, it only takes a brief moment to piece together that the person was just right beside her all of this whole time.

"They cut deeper than a knife, and the wounds last longer even if they're invisible."

To be honest, at the start of the book was truly absorbing to the fact where Neve was very focused on how she is to herself. She has fought her own battles. Unfortunately, it has slowly consumed her thoughts and particularly how her confidence was slowly draining out of her. I respect her perspective because it feels so very real and she's hurting a lot in that point of her life. The emails she writes back to herself sounds suicidal and I thought that this will perhaps encourage readers not to do such risk but approach a friend when we have deep concerns bothering us that may need a lot of moral support.

I liked the idea of Neve that as an individual, she's an introvert. She's persistent and hardworking to make her own success in life. I believe she has taken lots of risks even though it hasn't been fully developed to her own capabilities because she's still holding on to the fear of losing everyone she loves.

"What's the point in sticking around to suffer more?"

The mother of Neve singled out her only daughter was the most absurd of a mother's trait to have in the whole context. It was absolutely painful for me to read it and I just couldn't handle her attitude towards Neve. I'm literally cringing as I write about her right now. Secondly, after Neve and Blake got together, I just couldn't bring myself to really like the story that much at all which prolong the main story a little to just get to the real point. The happy ending itself made me not that enthusiastic and it just wasn't really that interesting. Blake and Neve eventually worked everything out. I wasn't really moved by it, honestly. I may have to cringe yet again of how the book made me feel overall. I really wanted to love and enjoy and have a pleasant time with the book. I guess I expected too much.

Not Enough didn't connect and made an impact that bring closer to my heart but I suggest that you read the book for those of you who are currently into YA mature/NA contemporary of some sort and you might be surprise how this book might just be the next best thing in your life!

Book Review- Not Enough by Mia Hoddell

Neve Colvin is twenty one and lives with her mother still. However her mother doesn’t understand Neve. Neve is quiet and likes being alone. She is an extreme introvert and her mother criticizes her harshly because of it. In fact the verbal abuse is daunting and Neve is sick of it. One horrible night after her friend, Blake, had to save her from a club she had had enough. She packs all her things and moves out after another fight with her mother. It is finally the right thing to do.
Neve moves in with Blake and his roommate Robbie. She is working through her guilt and her feelings of inadequacy. She is having a hard time moving past her mother’s inability to accept her as she is. Blake is there for her through everything. He has been there to pick up the pieces when she needs it. He loves her but knows she isn’t ready to hear it. He and Robbie become her only friends but she is fine with that.
She is moving forward. Her relationship with Blake is changing and she is happy about it. The problem is her mother keeps trying to step in. Neve keeps trying to please her mother until she refuses to do it any longer. Blake helps her along the way. However Neve has a secret that Blake doesn’t even know. She fears that if he knew he would leave her. She couldn’t bear that.
The author gave me this book to read and review. I found the description interesting. The main character Neve is an introvert and prefers her own company. Her mother doesn’t understand her and thinks she needs to be more social which will solve everything. Their relationship is sad. Her mother treats her horribly. You feel sorry for her and disgusted at her mother for her behavior. I was torn about how Neve handled things. She is verbally beaten down enough but I wanted her to stand up for herself without feeling guilty. It was a roller coaster for me to read. I would applaud her when she would tell her mother how she felt. Then she would let her mother manipulate her through her guilt. It really frustrated me. I wanted to shake her. Blake has an abundance of patience to help Neve. He was sweet and watched her beat herself up constantly. It was difficult to read.
Things got better when Neve entered her relationship with Blake. That seemed to give her the courage to move forward. I loved how he talked her into getting help. I also loved the ending. He is a guy that every girl wants. He was my favorite character of the whole story.
It was a bumpy ride through low self-esteem and a poisonous mother-daughter relationship. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Not Enough is one of the most emotional…yet realistic novel I have ever read!

Mia Hoddell has brought my attention to the emotions faced by introverts, and how they must or might have felt whenever people tells them to go out and socialise. People think that introverts are shy and isolating themselves, and the most common phrase that comes out of their mouths, or should I say most of us, would be, “You should go out and socialise more!”

We do not realise in saying that, we are only causing more harm to them. If your personality is not, and never has been an introvert, you would never have understand how they must have felt. Even if you are think you are the closest friend.

Neve Colvin. The girl who thinks that she will never be accepted for who she is. The girl who tried her best to please her mother, only to have her confidence and heart shattered.

Neve’s mother is the one person I would love to have screamed in her face for causing so much harm to Neve. She doesn’t think or care about Neve. The only thought that probably includes Neve is how she ungrateful she thinks Neve is and that Neve should socialise more. She never STOPPED to think about the harm she has caused Neve.

Seriously, the entire time I was reading Not Enough, I wish Neve actually stood up to her mother. It’s not right, to be turned down at every turn! That my readers, is when I am so glad that Blake exists! I guess you could say he was the light in Neve’s darkness? ^_^

No amount of words will ever describe how thankful I am to know that Blake stuck by Neve’s life! She deserves someone like Blake, instead of her own mother poisoning her. Her mother don’t deserve a daughter like Neve!

This novel is so beautiful it makes my heart cry so much! From the struggles Neve face, I have learned a valuable lesson. Sometimes when you’re facing your inner demons, it is hard for people to stick by you. Yet for Neve, Blake was there for her. This is a novel, not just about two people finding love, but also about how one finds her salvation in another.

Highly recommended for readers to read this wonderful novel!

This story definitely had the ability to pull heartstrings. Growing up with a "normal" mother who felt her introvertedness was "not normal", Neve made plans. She just had to get her business up and running and she could go. One fight too many pushes Neve to the brink, but luckily for her, her best friend Blake was always there to catch her -- but even he doesn't know the darkest her moments have gotten.

I loved Blake for the way he cared for his best friend. He wasn't dumb to what Neve had gone through -- he'd been a part of Neve for so long, her mother didn't stop her belittling in front of him. As Neve falls further and further into herself, her friends start to drop away, but Blake always stays.

Now... I'm introverted. I have mini panic attacks when meeting co-workers (whom I've worked with for nine years) in groups larger than 5; I have asthma attack inducing panic attacks when I'm in stores that I feel I don't belong in (Hollister and Abercrombie, anyone?). I prefer my art and reading and writing and photography than going out.

But Neve takes introvertedness to a whole new level. Her inability to be in social situations was nearly painful. However, her desire to be cared for and wanted for who she was was heartbreaking. Like me, she fears that everyone will eventually leave her, so rather than waiting for that to happen, she pushes people away.

So while I could definitely relate to Neve, she annoyed me at times. Blake though -- there was one super supportive person in her life and if we could all have someone in our lives like him, we'd all certainly be happy. He was right to be a bit timid to going a step further in their friendship -- if things were to go wrong on the love front for these two, Neve would literally have nobody. The cautious steps that take place to get these best friends to forever were certainly written well.

I also really enjoyed Robbie's character. I loved that he grew into Neve without her knowing, and he became another support person for her. I would absolutely love to see Mia write a story for this guy who teases Blake endlessly.

I Received an ARC from the author MIA HODDELL- in exchange for an honest for opinion. This is Mismousey's very honest opinion of NOT ENOUGH. Having never read any of Ms. Hoddell's books before. I am unfamiliar with her writing - and did not know what to expect. Saying this- I must say: I am very much delighted and spellbound with her.

I found that she has a way with emotions. Ms. Hoddell brings them out - you fill the raw - deep emotions-depression -loneliness -wanting to be loved. The characters in the story seem so real life- you can feel what they are going through. You might eve known someone that is going through the same thing. It deals with real life emotions and facts. The emotions and situations are very raw and deep. As for the scenes in it- the reader is able to see them right before their eyes.

The story opens with Neve writing at a riverbank. She is writing a letter- we aren't told to whom at this time. But it is filled with some very raw emotions. Whom ever she is speaking of is telling her she is not good enough. Have you ever felt that way?

We next see Neve speaking with her best friend Blake. Blake is asking her to move in with him. He has an extra room. And anytime she needs him an wants to get away from her mother. She has a room and a place to come to.

When she goes home - her mum starts in telling her that she needs to needs to be around people. Get out more- and not around Blake- she needs to date-go to clubs- drink have fun. Not hole up in her all the time. She isn't doing anything -not making any money- just wasting her time- not good enough.

Finally one night after going clubbing with Cece and Blake rescuing her. He takes her- her mum starts in again. Neve has had enough- Blake and her pack up her belongings. And she moves in with him. Only to find out that the room is occupied with his roomie Robbie. Now Neve and Blake share his room together.

What happens to Neve? Does she ever feel GOOD ENOUGH? And what about Neve and Blake? Ad Neve and her mum? For all the answers you ARE GONNA HAVE TO READ THE BOOK!!!

I recommend this book to all- but please realize that this deal with raw emotions. Mismousey gives this a 70 out of 5 stars.

MAKE SURE TO ADD THIS BOOK TO YOUR GOODREADS LIST. THEN RUN AND GET YOUR COPY TODAY!!

4/5 (Very Good)

*I received a copy of this story from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

This was an incredible story but it was so sad. It was depressing, heart breaking, dark in so many ways. If you've had a questionable childhood where you didn't have much support from your parents, had more belittling than love, and your friendships were minimal to say the least, this book might be hard to read. Prepare yourself before you sit down to read it!

That being said, I think the author wrote this book very well. The story line flowed well and your heart strings were played quite well. The relationship between Blake and Neve is one to cherish and there was chemistry from the get go, no matter how "hidden" it might have been. The author described and wrote the details well and definitely made the story come to life. It's not all dark, depressing, or sad. There are daisies and roses moments throughout the story, but to me, the darkness overshadowed those happy moments. However, that's likely because it hit the head on some personal issues I hold, hence my warning.

There was something holding me back from giving this five stars. The writing was great and details and descriptions were written quite well. The relationships or lack there of were written naturally. Something kept me from falling in love with the story, no matter how sad. I can't say for sure exactly what that something was though, and that is so bothersome!

If you don't hold such triggers, please don't let this keep you from reading the story! I do recommend the book to anyone that can handle the content.

My heart absolutely broken for everything that Neve has had to live with. Her mom alonger with her mom's family treat Neve like crap and has hurt her over and over again. She now sees herself as broken inside from all the verbal blows she has had to hear from them. All she wants is her mom to love her and accept her for being herself but that just isn't in the cards. The one person that has loved and accepted her all her life is her best friend Blake. He is always there for here and without him she knows she couldn't survive.

Blake has loved Neve all his life but when he was 15 he realized that those feelings were no longer in the context of just friends. Not wanting to risk losing Neve in his life he has kept it to himself knowing she'd never believe him and that she'd run from those feelings. He has always been there to pick up the pieces from her family and to put her back together and that is why he has offered to let her live at his flat. He will do anything to see her smile and has made it his life mission to do just that.

Will Neve be able to cut herself off from the toxic relationships she has in her life? Will the damage be too deep? Will Neve and Blake's relationship develop to more now that they live in the same space? What happens when Neve breaks?

I loved reading about the relationship between Neve and Blake. If we all had friends like Blake than the world would be an awesome place. This is a must read book. It is emotional, funny at times, touching and full of love. Don't miss out on this book that's about finding your true family and the fact that they don't necessarily share the same blood.

Book title: Not Enough
Author: Mia Hoddell
Reviewer: Rea Loftis

3.5 stars

I have received this arc in return for my honest opinion. In no ways was I forced or bribed to leave the following review.

Not enough is my first book by Mia Hoddell, its is a bit of a departure from what I normally read. I feel like the subject matter of Not Enough is very personal for her. Anxiety, being socially awkward, depression, and low self-worth are large issues in our society today. This book touches on all of those things.

Neve, or Stripes as she is affectionately known, suffers from most if not all of these disorders. Her lifelong best friend, Blake is the lead male character in the story. Everyone who suffers from any type of mental boundary should have a Blake in their life! He was the saving grace and silver lining to this book for me.

I have never suffered from the issues that Neve has, so at times it was a little difficult for me to see things from her point of view. But if I had, I feel like a lot of people would be able to identify with her struggles.

The secondary characters, namely her family was a huge issue for me! I can't imagine a family, especially a mom, being so judgmental and discouraging to a child. I know it does exist in this world, but it's just so hard to read!

In the end, the message is that you do "need to surround yourself with things and people that are like-minded and make you happy." I find this to be very true and a life motto! We first need to work on making ourselves happy, before you can make anyone else happy!

~~~~~~~~~~Tracy's ★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~
Neve has never felt like she fit in or was good enough, one thing her Mother reminds her of over and over again. She has only wanted her acceptance and love, neither of which she has ever gotten. The only person in her life that she could count on is Blake. He has always been there to listen and make her feel happy. When pushed to her limits by her Mother; Neve makes a decision that changes the course of both hers and Blake's future. Are they ready for this next step? As much as she trusts Blake will she ever share her darkest secret? Will he understand or will he turn his back on her like her Mother?
I liked the story and characters a lot. Blake was very likable and I found myself rooting for him and Neve. I hated her Mother and how she treated Neve, what Mother would do and say the things she did. I hurt for Neve. This story was very emotional and one that I can see happening. Neve started out as a timid and shy character but through the story we see her strength developing through her relationship with Blake. I would have given the book five stars but I felt it dragged a little too much for my taste. Great story of how being accepted isn't always something that needs to come from others, but from within yourself.
What a great introduction to Mia Hoddell by reading Not Enough. Mia has written a beautiful and thoughtful story about introverts.
Neve Colvin feels she isn’t good enough. She is always being criticized by others because she rather spend time alone, she's too quiet and it takes her time to "warm up " to new people. Everyone except Blake is pressuring her to change, even the one person in the world that she needs approval from, her mom.
Blake Reynolds is a good looking guy, who is loving, caring, and patient. He has been Neve's best friend since they were little kids.He accepts her for who she is without trying to change her. He knows everything about her and wants to be more than just her friend.
Can Neve finally stand up for herself and see her importance? Will she let Blake into her heart by finally telling him the truth of what she has been hiding from him?
This story teaches you the importance of accepting the differences in others and not making fun of them. That we are all made different and it's okay. I look forward to reading more books from Mia Hoddell.
