Osprey Wargames #13

Dragon Rampant: Fantasy Wargaming Rules

Rate this book
Whether you're a nameless Dark Lord looking to conquer the known world, a Champion of Light holding out against the forces of evil or a Northern barbarian facing claimants to a stolen throne, Dragon Rampant allows you to bring those battles to the tabletop. Developed from the popular Lion Rampant system, Dragon Rampant is a standalone wargame that recreates the great battles of Fantasy fiction. Scenarios, army lists, and full rules for magic and monsters give players the opportunity to command unruly orc warbands, raise armies of the undead, campaign across an antediluvian world as the warchief of a barbarian tribe, or exploit the power of mighty creatures and extraordinary sorcery. An army usually consists of 6-8 units comprised of 6-12 individually based figures. These small units move and fight independently, assuming that they follow your orders rather than just doing their own thing. Command and control is just as important on the battlefield as the power of a troll chieftain or the magic of an archmage.

Great set of rules for a fantasy wargaming with models.

Off to my loft to prepare few armies and to lead them on the glory path! 👻

Typical game book. Though there was a lot of references back to the Historical Wargame written by the same author. I have found much of Osprey's line of wargame books to have some overly complicated rule sets with activation criteria mainly. It has been a struggle to read through but with online game play it begins to make a little more sense.

This is a set of miniatures rules that succeeds at being entertaining. The rules are designed to be played with any fantasy figures. Models can have an ability called "Strength 18/00" and there is a rule that gives players extra points if all of their miniatures were made before 1984. I hesitate to call Dragon Rampant generic fantasy, as you can use these rules to create your own custom army. In fact, my favorite photo in the book shows a unit of custom sheep miniatures. These are rules that are made for fun and casual play. There will be situations where you and your opponent will need to come to an agreement as to how things will be interpreted on the battlefield, but you both will have a good time doing it. Recommended for those who want to dust off their old fantasy armies and throw some dice.

It looks like once we get our campaign going this should be fun even if some of the rules are a bit imprecise for my liking.

An excellent addition to the already well written Lion Rampant rules. Simple to follow, not model specific, with immense variety in both troop types and scenarios. Well worth a look for something quick and easy yet with plenty of depth.

I have yet to play a game with these rules, but the author’s humor that is interjected in the book was very enjoyable and even if you don’t in enjoy the game mechanics, it is definitely worth the read for the humorous touches.
