Full disclaimer: I went into this one without having read the previous volume. I have no idea whether or not that had any effect on my enjoyment, but...
Minor Spoilers Ahead
So far, this was the weakest Injustice installment that I've read. Maybe because of Wonder Woman I'm just full-up with Greek gods in comic books or something? Pfft. I don't know. Doesn't matter, because these gods weren't all that scary, even though they were probably the best pick for Batman & Co. to ally with at this point. Hey, on a somewhat different subject, can somebody tell me why (according to DC) Hera is the goddess of Being a Butthole?
But another (bigger) problem was how impotent the Batfriends looked throughout this entire volume. Even Babs getting her feet back under her doesn't do much to make this team seem imposing. In fact, they spend the vast majority of the volume standing on the sidelines hoping Hercules can knock Superman out, because nobody on their side of the street has a prayer of doing anything even remotely useful.
Ok, so disappointments aside, this wasn't a total wash. There were several things that saved this volume for me, and one of them was the fight between Supes and WW! Bahahahahaha! OMG! She kicked his ass all over the place!
The eye poke! Never goes out of style...
Snap! Crackle! Pop! Ouch! Can't go wrong with a classic...
Why is Diana fighting her crush hero, you ask? Well, that's kind of a spoiler, so you'll just have to read this thing if you want to find out. And I don't want to ruin it, because the Big Battle is pretty much the highlight of this one. Or at least, it was for me. Oh, wait. That's not entirely true. It was also nice to see Captain Marvel finally live up to his potential, and do something badass.
Even if this sounds like a less than glowing review, it's still one of my top most anticipated titles out there. And, so far, there hasn't been a truly bad installment yet. I mean, yeah, I miss Tom Taylor, but I think Buccellato can pull it off once he finds his footing.
I received this from Edelweiss and DC Comics in exchange for an honest review. Ugh, where to start with this one.
My greatest fear when Brian Buccellato took over was that this once-great series would lose its direction and drive. And that, unfortunately, is exactly what is happening.
The story is very convoluted, and getting worse. All of a sudden, the Greek gods decide that Superman is not worthy to rule the earth, so they jump into the fray, initially siding with Batman and his crew. Throw in the conniving Sinestro, manipulating Luthor, and some surprise returns, and it is... a mess.
I think this series has run its course, I'm sorry to say.
Not on the same level of the first two Years, but better than Year Three. Gone are the deep philosophical conversations and ethical dilemmas about what is right and what is wrong, how far a person should go to enforce peace before he violates another person's freedom of choice, and what is more necessary: Peace or Freedom? Instead, its pretty much bang bang fistfights and one on one combats all the way (making it more and more like a video game-tie in comics that it really is, but we didn't realize until now), with forgettable aggressive over-dramatic dialogs and interactions from the beginning to end. The previous intricate character developments also took a backseat to all the actions. But nevertheless, I found it addictive and very enjoyable ride as well, whats with the Greek gods themselves now wanted in on all the fun Team-Batman and Team-Superman were having kicking each other's asses. And even if he's severely undermanned and underpowered, Batman still came up with couple of decent surprises hidden in his sleeves, turning the tables on the Superman Regime, and for the first time made them suffer and be on the defensive. It really should be obvious to everyone by now: You never ever bet against the Bat or underestimate him. And while we are at it, Batman is ALWAYS right. I guess some people never learn. And that's why all of this is just So. Much. Fun!
More like a 4~4.5 stars comparatively (as Year One and Two were solid 5-stars and Year Three was 3.5~4 stars), but what the heck I'm always generous with my ratings, so I'm going with a round 5 star.
I know a lot of people hate Year Four but I found it pretty entertaining. I mean people doing stupid shit for no reason but still.
There's moments of true stupid as fuck moments. One being with Seristo. It makes no sense and it adds nothing to the story beyond "Oh another save" moment. I also dislike how they made everyone just rush into fighting without seeing any sense in it.
However the fights themselves are entertaining. Watching Wonder Women face off against Superman is fun and exciting. I also like that Shazam gets to really show off how powerful he is. I just wish there was more "fucked up" moments you come to expect after Year 1-2. I think 3 and 4 have been tame in comparison.
Overall it's fun but since year 3 the series hasn't been as good. Still entertaining though. I'll be reading volume 2 soon!
While not quite up to the level that year 1 and 2 brought us this was still much better than year 3. The deity angle worked better for me than the magic angle. 3.5 stars.
"This is awful." - Batgirl "It needed to happen." - Batwoman
Year Four, Vol. 1, however, is anything but awful. This is unfortunately my Injustice: Gods Among Us swan song, as my library system doesn't carry the remaining books (the second part of Year Four and all of Year Five) - damn. Don't leave me hanging, LSLC!
I'm kind of bitter about that, as the series was regaining some of the Year One & Two momentum. Year Three's occasionally tedious (but not horrible) magic / mysticism showcase showdown is now in the past and our fractured JL takes on an assortment of angry Roman and Greek Gods. It probably sounds sadistic but really some of the best scenes were the characters going 'mano a mano' in the signature bone-crunching dust-ups -- Superman vs. Wonder Woman (!); Superman vs. Detective Renee Montoya (!!!); Batman vs. Damian's Robin; and Shazam vs. a character I'll refer to here as 'poetic justice.'
It pains me to give a lower rating to what used to be my favorite series, but I'm afraid that's all it can get.
The departure of Tom Taylor has been a huge blow to the series and while Bruccellato tries his best to continue the story, it's not entirely convincing.
The first volumes were everything that a comic should be - they had fast paced, intense plot, mind boggling twists, breath taking action and extraordinary characterization. Up to this day these are the only comics that have made me cry, laugh and gasp in horror, all in the space of a couple of pages.
That unfortunately doesn't hold true for the Year Four Vol. 1. It seems like the series has lots its direction and purpose. Batman and his resistance are apathic and defeated, while Superman faces a divine opposition - for some reason the Greek Gods have decided to interfere and we are faced with pointless fighting for what feels like most of the story.
The incredible characterization and the heart of the story that has made me care so deeply is no more.
However, it wasn't all bad!
While it was a disappointment in comparison to the previous volumes, it is still engaging enough. There's plenty of action and some truly epic fights as well as some touching scenes, and Harley Quinn provides quite a few laugh out loud moments.
It is still an entertaining read that many will enjoy, though it's a far cry from what this series used to be. I hope that the writers can make up for the faults in the next volume, though I'm wondering if it's still worth reading this series.
It's quite an enjoyable volume. The artwork is outstanding, the plot is good and neat, the sense of humor (?) despite the grim situation is nice too. Harley and Billy! Yeah!
I just don't believe Damian would call Batman 'Dad' in any situation, not at all. LOL But the brief dialogues between Batman and son are still awesome, almost to the point of black-humorous.
By the end of the volume, there are a lot of Plastic Man's coolness and witty speeches as well! Who would have guessed?
I'm glad that are still alive.
Still...what's Lex up to this time with the ? LOL
PS: I like the female crew (Batgirl, Batwoman, Wonder Woman, Artemis, Catwoman etc) all have badass gears and outfits!
PSS: although Darkseid doesn't look all that great here, but I'm all in for his fist fight with Superman. LOL
Mad this alternate history story line just keeps getting better and better. Every "year" of story arc is full of new surprises and events. I never know if another major character will make it to the end of the arc or who will get pulled into the story. If you are looking for a new vision of your classic DC heroes here it is! Great art and story. Very recommended
Superman takes down Renee in what proves to be an emotional story and then we have the rise of the Batgirl and that was cool to see but the main story is what happens when the Greek Gods comes in and ask Superman to abdicate his regime and then a great twist with Clark vs Diana and the brutalty of that fight, the coming of Hercules and all that and the JLA regime fighting the Greek Gods and a massive twist with Shazam and it was such a cool character and so many subplots building with Lex and Ares and so much more!
This was a great volume and turns the heat on to 12 and brings mythological aspect to it and does well and gives a couple of characters their moments and presents Superman with a different sort of challenge which was interesting to read about plus the art just gets better with every volume it feels like.
I eagerly tore into this one to see what would happen next and within the first few pages I was struck by how different the writing was. Superman on a throne? Lame puns? Clunky exposition? What happened?
...oh, new writer. Gotcha.
This is simply not very good. This volume is the sort of thing I initially expected when I read the very first collection: a below-average comic about superheroes fighting for no good reason as an excuse to give a video game some background.
In this issue Ares, the god of War, plays the same role Constantine did in the previous Year Three storyline, manipulating the gods of Olympus into taking up arms against Superman. It’s not nearly as well-crafted, and the gods are chomping at the bit to get into the fight for some not-very-clear reason. Taylor would have delved below the surface more, whereas here everyone feels two-dimensional.
Is this what we're going to do now? Every "year" will have some sort of themed enemy that Superman will eventually vanquish? Last year was magic, and now we're on to the Greek gods. So seemingly on a whim, the Greek gods have decided that Superman's rule is a blasphemy against themselves, and so go to war with his side what Batman and company sort of... awkwardly watch? Because they're very outclassed.
Still, even with slight plot justification, there's some really fun stuff in here: Wonder Woman throwing down with Superman, the issue centered on Renee Montoya, and lots of scattered character moments that remind me why I look forward to each new volume of this series. There's still a lot of good in the series, even if I do feel like it's maybe losing its way a little bit. At this point, I'm kind of glad that the book will be ending after Year Five, because I feel like its losing momentum a bit. Still, that does make it easier for me to stay hopeful. Buccellato ended Year Three in a great way, and maybe he'll pull something fantastic out for Year Four.
2.5 Stars. Okay, this is going to be a bit long 'cause I don't know if this volume is enough to keep reading this title. I'll explain.
Injustice: Gods among uswas a fantastic title. I consider Year One and Year Two to be one of my favorite comics of all time. The way Tom Taylor presented the story, the way he included and presented every character and their position in this conflict was perfect. Every character had a moment to shine, a witty line, an amazing scene, you didn't have to spend a lot of time with them to feel for them and connect, and most importantly, the storytelling was one of the best that DC has offered. From the plot, to the action, to the humor and the heart. It was an spectacular story.
Year One was more of a contained story. The plot is this: The Joker this time has his sight in Metropolis, and in a smart play, Superman falling in his trap, ends up killing Lois and Clark's unborn baby. Now, with grief and rage, Superman doesn't doubt to kill the Joker in return, in front of a shocked Batman, and decides that it's finally enough. He will bring justice to this world with his own hands. Don't worry, not really spoilers ,that's only the first two issues. Every main DC character is involved, the League and some of the Batfam. Every one of them chooses a side, Batman or Superman, and it's an amazing, violent, complex and smart story.
Year Two continues with the conflict, but this time it has the cosmic side too. The Green Lantern Corps get involved and shocking actions and deaths occur. It is fantastic. I laughed and cried and I couldn't recommend this enough.
Year Three is a bit different. We lost a lot of characters in Year Two and this time the magic and the supernatural side is brought to the conflict. We have more obscure characters and even though I enjoyed a lot of Constantine presence, the story lost its direction to me, everything was getting bigger and the marvelous way that Taylor had to connect everything and made every character shine was lost. And of course it would, 'cause this time we have a change of writer. Volume one is the last one under Taylor's direction, Buccellato is now in control and this story starts to go downhill.
Year Four. (Volume 1) This time around the Greek Gods are involved, directly tied with Wonder Woman history and her people, we have conflict when the Gods decide that Superman is a threat to them. They see dangerous that this mortal person is taking their rightful place in eyes of humanity so he has to be taken down. That's the premise and the execution is total chaos.
While the scope keeps getting bigger, the lack of direction and stupidity do too. We have characters that act with no reason, we have illogical attempts and actions scenes just for the sake of showing big heroes fight each other. I don't know what's more painful to read, characters that I loved becoming idiots in this volume, like Batman taking the side of the Gods and forcing Wonder Woman fight to the death against Superman and then seeing how she was about to die, yelling that he won't allow anyone to die, or the awful editing in this volume. There's a page with Flash waiting to receive the Amazonian Army, next page, out of nowhere, he's with Cyborg trying to talk to and mock Damian, as soon as that scene finishes he's showed again with the team looking at the army. There are so many pages that start with ''One Month ago'' ''Some time ago'' ''Then'' ''Now''... it's so annoying, so poorly written. Ugh. I was so underwhelmed and then irritated with this volume, I don't know if it's worth to keep reading to be honest. When you see one of your favorite stories turn into this mess, it just makes you mad.
What is painful is that everything that made this title an excellent story slowly disappeared to turn this into a big action and senseless violence fest. So if that's your idea of fun, go ahead and enjoy this title. If you loved how complex the plot and the characters were, you may want to skip this one and stop reading after Volume Three ends.
So apparently the Greek gods have been manipulated by Ares into a fight against Superman's forces. The fight scenes are interesting. Especially those with Wonder Woman.
Superman is still a hypocrite and a tyrannical doucheface. It is taking a god-awful long time for Superman to realize how flawed his decisions are. But they're finally starting to realize that maybe they've chosen the wrong side, and they're realizing that Sinestro = scum. TOOK THEM LONG ENOUGH.
Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Four Volume 1 by Brian Buccellato is one action packed volume that pits the old Gods of Myth Zeus, Hera, Hermes and more against the new Gods Superman, Wonder Woman, and more in a fight with deadly consequences. Wonder Woman's mother makes a deal with Athena to revive Wonder Woman and Superman from a magic induced sleep, we learn the terms of that deal in this volume and the consequences that come with it. Batman also makes a deal with Athena (the God of War) who is playing both sides for more war. Superman and Wonder Woman fight, and man is it epic. This graphic novel was high on action, but low dialogue that was not full of cliches. Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Four Volume 1 by Brian Buccellato collects Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Four issues 1-7.
The Plot:The Joker tricks Superman into killing Lois and his unborn child, when her heart stops a nuclear bomb destroys Metropolis. Superman distraught kills The Joker and declares martial law on the whole world, vowing that no one should die needlessly. Lex Luthor develops a pill that will make ordinary people super to start an army of supermen that Superman controls. Batman steals the super humans pills and gives them to every hero and a few villains to make them equal. Superman's action have drawn attention to the Green Lantern Corps who's power is all about will power. Martian Man hunter died as he was fighting Wonder Woman from the inside when Superman used his heat vision, and sent Wonder Woman into a coma. Sinestro is manipulates Superman telling his own story and the way the Green Lantern Corps will attack, he makes an alliance that brings Sinestro and his minions as added protection, both Hal Jordan and Superman put on the yellow rings of fear to win against the Green Lantern Corps. Batman list the help all of his friends with magical abilities in a plan to put Superman asleep forever. The plan worked but Wonder Woman's mother makes a deal with Athena to wake Superman and Wonder Woman. The sleep was supposed to give Superman clarity but he wakes up madder than ever because of what he missed out on. Batman makes a deal with Athena as well that has the old Gods and Amazon's joining his side. The Amazon's are missing Wonder Woman's mother who is taken prisoner by Hera and made to sit this fight out, as per her deal. Batman ends up tricking Wonder Woman to fight Superman to the death a a champion of the Amazon's.
What I Liked: The epic Superman / Wonder Woman fight is epic, lots of great drawings back the fight up. Harley volunteering herself to fight Superman as tribute. Harley's on going crush on Shazam calling him Shazzy. Shazam and Hercules fight another great fight. Montoya losing it when Huntress is killed. Batwoman's show of restraint against her enemy.
What I Disliked: The dialogue was really weak. Bearded Batman looks really weird.
Recommendations: The Superman versus Wonder woman is worth the price of this book, it is epic and meaningful fight, that is fought over two issues. I really enjoyed the art work more than I have in the previous volumes. I rated Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Four Volume 1 by Brian Buccellato 4 0ut of 5 stars. I only have 4 volumes left in the original Injustices series, and plan to have them read before the end of the year.
This was probably the weakest volume in the series, at least to me. With the introduction of the gods of Olympus I feel as if we've deviated too much from what should be the main focus of the story -- team Batman vs. team Superman. The issue did have some heartfelt moments between characters that I appreciated, not to mention that Barbara once again took up the mantle of Batgirl which was great to see.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
this was not as good as the previous volumes. I like the moments with Harley and the addition of Batgirl but I thought the Greek gods was a way less awesome than it could be. also wonder woman diving to try and kill Batman shows me more that this is not wonder woman.
Some old same old...except the quite moments don't even make sense now.
World: Art is meh, the emotions portrayed are a bit wonky and sometimes when smiles and smirks are unclear the art drops the ball. The world building here is okay for what it is. Playing with the Gods was a nice touch and a logical step, their portrayal on the other hand is another thing all together.
Story and Characters: I don't care that Shazam is an adult when he's Captain Marvel but you can't do what you did with him as Billy, you just can't. The writers going there is just...no. The rest of the arc is just as absurd and illogical. We finally see where Ma and Pa Kent are and yeah they are wasted and don't inform the character of Supes but just makes this version all the more illogical. Buccellato wants to have a discussion about the two sides, he tries, there are more quiet moments here than when Taylor was writing. However these quiet moments only reveal how thin some characters are and their logic gaps. The entire trail by combat thing is stupid and I will say that Supes is not the worst written character in the Injustice books it's Diana, it's a travesty what they have done to her. Everything she stands for are not present and I can't see a way that this character can be changed by events from the Diana we know, this is not Wonder Woman don't give her that name.
This series is moving more and more towards the trash pile. Why do people like this so much? Do they not read any other comic books or...watch, read, listen to ANY other story other than this so they don't know what good storytelling is?
This series went downhill very rapidly. The last book had many of the same flaws, but I was able to overlook them due to the exciting addition of magic in the DC world, something I was unfamiliar with, and the awesome new (to me) characters of John Constantine et. al.
But now, the decline in quality just seems so glaring. This series has literally turned into a slugfest of the same people punching the same other people over and over. Every now and then a relatively minor character dies. Then there is more punching. The moral philosophy is gone, the emotional weight is gone, the dialogue seems stiff and uninspired, and the majority of the DC heroes (save Batman) seem to have half the intelligence of a fence post. How do you mess up Greek Gods?? The addition of the Greek pantheon should guarantee amazing results. But not this time.
It has got all the complexity of a child smashing two action figures together repeatedly. I mean, when one of my all-time favourite comic book characters can sacrifice himself to help save the world and I can barely find it in me to care (when weeping over the deaths of fictional characters is pretty much a hobby by now) they're just doing something wrong.
I'll finish the series, but now more out of obligation than enjoyment.
