When Niles and Justine Burton go camping to get a break from their stressful lives, they expect to find peace . . . not an abandoned village hiding an ancient evil. But the Burtons aren't your typical family. Bee, their son, just made his first friend, who happens to be a ghost. Maggie, their teenage daughter, has fallen in love with a wicked girl who pressures her into using drugs. And back in the woods, Niles and Justine have found the cursed mask of the murderous Plague Doctor . . . who's now hunting them! As the Burton family fall apart, they must put back the pieces in order to solve an ancient mystery . . . and survive.
Zack Keller (cocreator of Dick Figures, the Streamy, IAWTV, and Annie Award-nominated web series with 650 million+ YouTube views) and Nick Keller (Turner of the Century) deliver a supernatural horror thriller about family and creeping, terrifying murder!
Death Head is utterly and gruesomely fantastic. It is very reminiscent of Locke and Key to me, more so in tone, not in story, which I think it the biggest compliment I could pay any comic. All of the splash pages between each issue were the best cliff hangers having me itching to keep reading. I had really high hopes for this going in and it did not disappoint. The writing is solid, the artwork is killer (no pun intended), the character development is truly magical, and blood, SO MUCH BLOOD.
If you're a fan of horror comics I would absolutely pick this up.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! If you’re a fan of horror, mystery, fantasy or anything in between, you’re gonna love it.
DEATH HEAD follows the Burton family and their struggle to overcome the mysterious Plague Doctor. After stealing a cursed mask from the woods, the Plague Doctor begins a relentless hunt to find the family and retrieve his mask.
I won’t leave any spoilers here because there’s some incredible twists and turns that I wouldn’t want to reveal. But I will say, there’s a huge cliffhanger in this book that I did NOT see coming. Incredible work by Zack and Nick.
I highly recommend you pick up this book ASAP from your local comic store or online. You might as well pick up 2 copies and give one to a friend who likes horror (or just good comics).
The end of the story leaves you satisfied, while also wanting more. Questions are answered but it also leaves something to the reader’s imagination in the best way possible.
Nick and Zack Keller have written an epic horror tale with DEATH HEAD. 2 thumbs way up.
Interesting attempt to create homage to horror genre and it's various motives. First issue got me intrigued and everything seemed promising. Unfortunately, pretty shortly I realized that authors bit quite bigger piece than they can chew, and used too many genre tropes.
Result is mixture that is standing on pretty thin ice in some moments and explanation of main twist feel quite lame and doesn't make much sense. Author tangled themselves in complicated lines, while they could use much simpler explanation that would work.
Ending offers interesting twist, but bitter taste still lingers and it's not enough. Although art in book is quite mainstream, I really liked covers, that have nice pulp vibe. Too bad that content doesn't fulfill promise. 2.5*
3.5 Stars What a lovely, gruesome ride. It reads like an atmospheric urban legend or creepypasta turned comic. I didn't particularly cared for the characters (except for Bee and Rosie), buy they're not terribly developed or anything either; they just don't feel as important as the mysterious doctors or the overall plot. Lovely art and delightful colors.
Was drawn to this by the excellent cover art, but the story itself just packs too much into too little space. The central idea behind it would be a solid one if some of the other supernatural elements would be explained a little better. Just too many questions that will never be answered in its pages, which isn't always a negative for horror, but here the omitted details drag it down. The interior art is passable, not good enough to draw your attention away from the mediocre plot.
This is a great example of a well made horror comic. Like all horror, the beginning is a little slow as we learn to know the characters. Each character's journey is completely different, but linked contextually very well. The stories of each character are a little generic, but were fleshed out well, especially as they intertwine at the climax.
I literally gasped out loud at one point while I read it. I really liked it, and I would suggest anyone trying to get into horror comics give it a shot.
Am intriguing debut with a lot of big ideas. Unfortunately, they don't all come together and instead are character beats and horror set pieces from what feels like a dozen different stories come together. While I was left cold by the amount of convenience in the script, I'm excited to see what these two do next and would be happy to read another collection.
