There are some authors who just know how to hook you immediately and keep you on the edge of your seat. I don't know exactly what they do - it's something about the perfect tension, perfect amount of surprises, perfect balance between interesting characters and fast-paced plot - but Morgan Rhodes is one of those authors.
I started out quite liking Rhodes' Falling Kingdoms series, but I was put off by how derivative the books were (i.e. Games of Thrones, round 2). The need to read on was there, that inexplicable, addictive pull, but I just couldn't ignore that the plot and characters were "borrowed" from other works. So I tried to get my Rhodes fix from her spin-off series.
And I am so glad I did.
This book is just ultimate fantasy fun. I found myself dragged along from the very first chapter, into a world of parallel universes - namely, our universe in modern day Toronto, and the world of Ancient Mytica. These two places are linked by history, magic and a book - because isn't the thought of getting pulled into a book and discovering a new world the most exciting thing ever?
There are three different character perspectives, all in third person (which I thought worked well). One is Crystal, a girl in our world, whose sister's spirit gets sucked inside an ancient magic book, and Crystal is left behind to solve the mystery that will lead her toward family secrets and lies.
Then, again in our world, there is Farrell - a party boy from a rich, important family - who gets dragged deeper and deeper into a magical cult that seems to be changing him.
And finally, there's Maddox - a boy in Mytica who can communicate with spirits - who will soon find himself caught between the queen's plans and helping the new spirit girl who has landed in his world.
It's so exciting. So much is constantly happening. All the characters have engaging stories and I especially enjoyed how Farrell becomes increasingly a kind of antihero/villain who still manages to hold the reader's sympathy.
I highly recommend this to anyone who loves some fast-paced, drama-filled YA Fantasy.

This book was not at all what I expected! Specifically the secret society aka basically a cult thing, I didn't see that coming but it was really quite interesting. It was one of my favourite parts of the story because it was so unexpected and interesting to read about.
This book does urban fantasy is a very unique way. It is a bit difficult to explain, but typically urban fantasies (aka low fantasy) have a modern urban setting where there's this magical world that is a part of the real world but few know about it as it is hidden, like Harry Potter or The Mortal Instruments. Now with this book it followed that same structure but in a unique way because of the perspectives. Ferrel and Crystal exist in the real world but then we also follow Maddox who exists in the fantasy world. These people are exclusive to those spheres and so, it gives the book the feel of being a high fantasy novel when reading Maddox's chapters while it seems like an urban fantasy when reading Ferrel's or Crystal's. Now of course Becca is the one exception to this rule but that just makes it complicated, she really links the two together to put it simply. I thought using the different worlds and different perspectives like that was really unique. Now I read the first book of Falling Kingdoms a long time ago, so I had already been introduced to the world of Mytica. However, I don't remember much about that book so I think I'm going to have to give it a reread soon!
This book does have a lot of characters which sometimes with fantasy novels puts me off but I didn't find it terribly hard to distinguish between characters so it didn't bother me too much. I loved that sibling relationships and friendships were big in this book, bigger than the romance in fact. That being said, the romance wasn't bad either. The characters were really likeable, some even despite the fact that they were giant jerks, so the relationships were enjoyable to read about as well.
This book was, as Morgan Rhodes specializes in, unpredictable. It's one of those at-the-edge-of-your-seat-the-whole-time-because-holy-crap reads, which I love. I'm so looking forward to seeing what will happen next!

For fans of: Falling Kingdoms (obviously), A Darker Shade of Magic (different worlds), The Conspiracy of Us (more secret societies!)
Will I continue the series? Yes, most likely!
Should you read it? If you're into high fantasy or low fantasy, and putting together the pieces of a crazy web of nonsense, yes!

I don't know what is happening right now!
I love Morgan Rhodes and I love the Falling Kingdoms series, but this one I didn't really like =( The first of it was awesome with Crystal loving photography and the family owning a books store but then I just couldn't get into the rest of it.
I just knew I was going to love this book. Sigh. . . . Now I'm sad. er

Well, then. Here's my first (and probably last) strawberry review (you're welcome, dickhead) -
Note : please bear in mind that 2 stars from me means that it's okay, and it definitely is, I guess. Not nearly enough to create a great book, but okay. Yet there's nothing in Morgan Rhodes's writing, plot or characters that makes me want to go further than the 50% I read. So damn flat, the whole of them. Good ideas, failed execution.

"Weakness was unacceptable. The weak didn’t survive very long—not in the society, not in the world at large."My expectations weren't high for this book. I didn't even wanted to read this series that much 'cause I couldn't find it. 😅 But when I did, I thought 'why not?'. So ended up finishing the first book of this series.
This is a spin-off series of one of my beloved series, Falling Kingdoms (FK). Well, I can't say it's better than FK. It definitely has potential, but not that of FK's. You can say, it's good in its own way.
I feel that those who haven't read FK series yet, this series will not be a good idea. World of Mytica isn't that clear here. Whereas first book of FK has a strong world building. Otherwise, this book is good.
The very good thing about this series is that every character is likeable upto some extent. And, of course, character development is great here as well.
I enjoyed the book. It's a good one for the fans of Falling Kingdoms series. I highly recommend this to those who have already read FK.
Bright is life. Dark is death.Honestly, I am not in a mood of writing a long review even though I have so much to fanboy on. It took me 6 days to finish. (Thanks to college. 😒)
I will not be reading The Darkest Magic soon. Are you serious, how would I?! I can't think of any book now except for the finale of FK, Immortal Reign! I am sooooooo excited to read that book ASAP! Moreover, Morgan Rhodes has pumped me up even more by posting the TEASErs of Immortal Reign on Instagram.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge fan of Morgan Rhodes's other series, Falling Kingdoms (FK). Naturally, I was beyond excited for the spin-off series, despite that fact that it doesn't feature any of my beloved FK characters and it is set a gazillion years prior to the events of FK. I was also somewhat scared I wouldn't like it for that exact same reason.
Morgan Rhodes never disappoints, that's for sure. I absolutely loved this!
Honestly, I would read anything Morgan Rhodes writes. She has easily become one of my favorite authors. Does this book have the same strong start FK had? I know FK had a shaky beginning for a lot of readers, but honestly I loved it so much. I'm honestly not sure which book had a stronger beginning and it's too soon to tell which series is better, considering the fact I read five books of FK vs. one book here. Seeing how FK got better as the books progressed, I'm 100% sure this trilogy will be just the same and I am so pumped to see where the story goes!
When I started reading this book, I was in a slump. I binged all of FK's books and was hoping this book would get me out of my slump. However, despite the fact that I was enjoying the plot and the characters immensely, the book did not manage to get me out of my slump, so I had put it on hold for a few days and after getting out of it, I binged the remaining 70% of the book in one sitting. Morgan Rhodes never disappoints.
Every single character in this book is lovable and I'm honestly so invested in every single one of them already. Crys Hatcher, who started off as somewhat naive, developed into a strong character by the end. Farrell Grayson, is basically Magnus from FK. He's overly caring when it comes to his family, but he's also an asshole. However, I've fallen hard for him and seeing how Magnus developed throughout FK, I'm so pumped to see Farrell develop! Also, I'm already shipping him and Crys hardcore. Becca Hatcher, Crys's sister, is a sweetheart. She's strong in her own way and I'm also super excited to see more of her! Maddox Corso, my precious little baby, I can't begin to tell you how much I love him. And of course, I ship him with Becca because both of them are such precious little things. #ProtectMaddoxAtAllCosts
If you want to read this book before reading the FK series, I don't think you'll have any issues; however, I think it's best if you do read FK before this one since you'll get the history and the backstory way better! There's a lot of plot twists in this book and I'm honestly living! I love it all! I'm super excited for more plot twists and character developments and angst and I'm 100% sure Rhodes will deliver them perfectly and not disappoint! I can't wait to start the next book, The Darkest Magic!

As many of you probably already know, the Falling Kingdoms series is one of my favorite series of all time! It's definitely one of those types of series that gets better with time as more books come out. But as much as I love Falling Kingdoms, book one was probably my least favorite so far. It's still good, just not as good as the later books.
However, I strongly believe that A Book of Spirits and Thieves was a much better start, compared to Falling Kingdoms, to this wonderful spinoff. I love the magical world of Mytica and I really enjoyed seeing the history, as we come to know in Falling Kingdoms, actually unfold right before our very eyes.
It was great to see how the goddesses Valoria and Cleiona really were and how they ruled during their time. In Falling Kingdoms, we see that the people of Mytica put their goddesses on these pedestals, but in ABoSaT we see how evil and power-hungry these goddesses actually were, especially Valoria.
I absolutely love Magnus and Cleo from the original series and they're definitely my favorite, but I find that these characters were much more likable than say, Lucia or Lysandra. In fact, there's not a single character in this book I hate. I loved how different everyone was from one another and I've even came to love our villains.
Morgan Rhodes is notoriously known for her spontaneous killings, and we still deal with some of that in this book as well. Though we lose a few characters, I don't think that the number of deaths we see in this book even come close to how many character deaths we go through in the original series. But they're definitely still there, and some deaths will just seriously hit you in the feels. I also really appreciate how we don't have as many POVs in this book compared to the original series. I felt that it made the plot more straightforward so we don't have to constantly worry about falling asleep halfway through a boring character's chapters.
Morgan Rhodes honestly just did it again with this spinoff! I had my doubts about Spirits and Thieves but those doubts have been cast away after reading this book. Is A Book of Spirits and Thieves better than the Falling Kingdoms series? My answer is: It's too soon to tell. And I say "too soon" because it took me two books to realize that Falling Kingdoms would become one of my favorite series of all time. The same might happen for this one for me. But so far, I'd probably say no and maybe it'll remain that way considering how spinoffs are rarely better than their original series, but Spirts and Thieves is definitely up there. It's only the first book, and if Morgan Rhodes decides to take the same route she did with Falling Kingdoms, I can really see this book getting better as we get more books in the series.

A lot of people know how much I love the Falling Kingdoms series and Morgan Rhodes, so I still went into aBoSaT with an open mind. I'll admit, I was unsure how the combination of Mytica and modern-day Toronto was going to play out, but no more than thirty pages in, I was hooked.
Since this books release isn't until the end of June, I want delve into it yet with my review, but I will say that I think this trilogy will appeal to a lot of different readers as it does combine contemporary, high fantasy, and modern magic all in one and like myself, I think a ton of people will enjoy this!
And alas, the characters are rich and complex, there was not one perspective I didn't enjoy reading. =D

When old and present worlds collide? What will happen?
When Crystal Hatcher opened the package that is not address for her. She saw the impossible. Becca, her little sister slips into a coma after touching the magical book. She was somehow transported in Ancient Mytica, there Becca met Maddox Corso. And he is the key on her way home.
Introducing Farrell Grayson, one of the members of Hawkspear Society, a mysterious underground association. He was then invited by the leader to prove himself.
Their fate is woven by fate and magic.
It is not a secret that I love Falling Kingdoms, naturally I have to see this book for myself. And like most Rhodes’s books, A Book of Spirits and Thieves are very easy to follow. From the very first page I was bewitched, I had to drop everything and read it on one sitting down.
A Book of Spirits and Thieves is told from alternating point of view of Maddox, Crystal and Farrell. It straddles the line of contemporary and high fantasy. Here’s why, while the majority of this book is set in Canada, Maddox who is from Ancient Mytica has his fair share of account woven into the story.
The overlap between the old world and the new world is very intriguing, as well as the vague connotation behind the transition between the two universes. In some ways this certain trope has not dominated YA yet.
In Addition to all those selling points, the characterization is fantastic, we have the good & evil concept going on. It is without doubt, Crystal who exceptionally stood out from the rest. I immediately root for her. She is fierce, protective, cunning, careless and loyal.
And we have Farrell, he is a charming, privilege boy with dubious morals. In spite of his arguable ethics, I can find his allure and why many readers might dig him. Not me though, I already have Magnus Damora for this.
And to all readers who couldn’t quite get into Falling Kingdoms, maybe this is the time to pick this book up. It is far easier to grasp than it’s spin off.
To sum up, A Book of Spirits and Thieves is a very gripping introduction to a promising series. Highly recommended to Falling Kingdoms fans and Fantasy readers.

And to all readers who couldn’t quite get into Falling Kingdoms, maybe this is the time to pick this book up. It is far easier to grasp than it’s spin off.
To sum up, A Book of Spirits and Thieves is a very gripping introduction to a promising series. Highly recommended to Falling Kingdoms fans and Fantasy readers.

Another great book from my favorite author Morgan Rhodes. This book is different from her previous series Falling Kingdoms. Why? Because the action of the book take places in Mytica and in our world.
The book starts with Crystal/ Crys.
Crys is a rebel teenager, without any plans for her future. She enjoys taking photos of random people she sees on the street. She is living with her mother and sister Becca, working in their own bookshop. One day, package from Europe has arrived. It was send by her aunt Jackie. In the package was old some old book written in language she never saw before.
Becca takes book from Crys to take a better look, but then something happens and Becca's spirit is sucked by the book.
Farrell
Farrell is middle child of a rich family. He is having hard time dealing with his brother's death, finding comfort with alcohol and women. His family is part of a secret society, Hawksper Society, whose leader is mysterious Markus King.
" 'Marcus is what he is',
'Which is? What? A wizard?'
'I don't think he went to Hogwarts.' "
As a middle child, he is craves for attention, so he joins Marcus's inner circle.
"It might be a secret inside of another secret, but it was something special and uberexclusive. It was proof that Farrell was't nothing, wasn't nobody. That he's been chosen by a powerful, enigmatic man to be included in something incredible."
But first he has earn his place, so Marcus gives him a mission.
Maddox
Maddox is living in Mytica. He is a witch-boy . His stepfather Livius is using his power for robbing the rich. On one of his "assignment", he stumble across Becca's spirit.

Buddy read with the only person who understands my addiction to the Falling Kingdoms series and anything related to it, May,who I actually spent the last hour arguing with about who gets Magnus.
After absolutely loving the Falling Kingdoms series I had extremely high expectations for this. I wasn't disappointed at all but there was still something missing from this book that left it at 4 stars. Now, you're probably wondering, is this better than Falling Kingdoms? I've heard a lot of comments saying that this is better than book one of Falling Kingdoms. However, I actually loved book 1 even though it is the weakest in the series. Personally I think Falling Kingdoms is better than this so far but there's definitely so much room for growth in this series - it really was a brilliant start to what's definitely going to be an amazing new trilogy.
It's probably important to note that you do not have to read Falling Kingdoms before reading this series BUT it is probably better if you do. I feel like if you skip Falling Kingdoms and go straight into A Book of Spirits and Thieves then you'll miss out on the crucial world building of Mytica. Also, there's so many references to Falling Kingdoms and this basically acts as a background of some events that happen in Falling Kingdoms.
It actually took me a while to get into this. Almost immediately after picking it up, I fell into a slump and I ended up reading 2 trashy romance novels in order to fix the slump. Up until about the 50% mark, there wasn't anything overly exciting happening and I did struggle with the whole flipping back and forth between Mytica and Toronto purely because I was so used to being only in Mytica with these books. However, I was never bored at any stage and I did really enjoy the plot and characters. I'm really interested to see where this series is going but it'll probably be a while before I pick up the next book because my tbr pile is a problem and the physical copy of this book is only available in hardback.

Let me be clear, this isn't some rip off of Falling Kingdoms but I was still trying to find the connection between the characters. For example, Crystal would definitely be Cleo, Farrell is a mix of Jonas and Magnus, Becca is 200% Lucia if Lucia wasn't a crazy bitch (I love Lucia despite it) and Maddox is probably Magnus and Alexius but a cuddlier teddy bear version of them. I honestly couldn't tell you who my favourite character was but I'm definitely excited to see more of them.
Crystal goes through a lot of shit in this book and dammit am I an idiot for shipping Farrell and Crystal so freaking hard. They're giving me all the Magneo feels and omg I just need them to go off and be happy and kill Markus (aka the shit) asap. I see so much of Cleo in Crystal and I honestly can't wait for more of her character development. She starts off a bit naive but damn she does a total 180 by the end and I just want so much more of that.
"Sounds like we'll be seeing eye to eye soon enough. Maybe we'll make this crazy romance of ours work out after all."
Farrell is a dick. An asshole. A prick. But it's not his fault and I love him despite it. There were some moments that made me go wtf you doing Farrell but he's trapped under Markus' magic so it's not really his fault that he's screwed.

Okay let's move onto Maddox aka my precious cinnamon roll. I love him. He's so precious and sweet and omg I just wanna protect him from the cruel world. A LOT of shit goes down in his chapters and he probably has the most interesting story of our 4 MCs.
Becca also has a lot of shit happen with her because she touches a magic book that sends her off into another world so I mean that's crazy as all hell. I'm interested to see how Maddox and Becca's relationship works now that they're back in their own 'worlds'. Dammit Morgan Rhodes, why do you make characters so shippable.

I want to start off by saying that Falling Kingdoms has become one of my all time favorite series. While Falling kingdoms was more along the lines of an introduction to the world of Mytica, it captivated my attention and made me fall in love with the world.
However, that being said, A Book Of Spirits and Thieves fell a little flat for me. In my personal opinion, ABOSAT was a far more inferior start to this spin-off to Falling Kingdoms. While I really enjoyed this, I believe Falling Kingdoms was a superior start to a series.
A Book Of Spirits and Thieves takes place in ancient Mytica and modern day Toronto. We're introduced to three characters' POV's:
Crystal, Farrell, and Maddox.
Our story kicks of with Crystal Hatcher opening a box that was sent to her mother by her aunt. When she opens the box she finds that it is a book. In this book are symbols and passages in a language she does not recognize. When her sister, Becca, touches the book it leaves her in a catatonic state in the human world and sends her spirit into ancient mytica.
Farrell Grayson is the rich, handsome boy who is used to getting what he wants. His family is part of a secret society led by a mysterious and powerful leader. When he is invited to be a part of the secret society within the secret society, he believes it is his chance to prove himself. Farrell is basically our modern day Lord Aron. Yikes. You can imagine how I felt about him.
Maddox Corso is known as "The witch boy", he can summon spirits. One day Maddox meets Becca Hatcher, who claims she is from another world and believes he is the one who can help her get back to her world.
What was truly one of the best highlight of ABOSAT, was the character development. Throughout the course of the book, you start to really understand and care for the characters. You get to see their struggles and how they surprise even themselves with what they're capable of.
What really captivated me and held my attention was seeing just how merciless and power hungry the goddess Valoria is under her rule over mytica. In Falling Kingdoms, we hear about the legends regarding goddesses and how much they're worshipped but in ABOSAT we get to witness just how cruel and vindictive Valoria truly is.
Overall, the plot and character development were very well executed and while Morgan Rhodes tones down the spontaneous killing she's known for in Falling Kingdoms, there's still plenty of betrayals and killings. Including a shocking plot twist near the end that I myself, can still not get over. I have to admit, the first half of the book wasn't doing it for me, but once I surpassed the half point, I was ALL for it. The last half of the book was thrilling and surprised me in many ways.
The wait for The Darkest Magic is going to be pure torture.

I'm usually not a fan of urban fantasy books but wow this is an exception! Like always, Morgan Rhodes delivers a fast-paced story with a gripping plotline and likable characters that you can't help but ship together. However, I definitely enjoyed the modern time more compared to Ancient Mytica (which is a first) and I'm looking forward to seeing more of what goes around in Modern Toronto in the second book The Darkest Magic !
I can't help but constantly compare this book to Falling Kingdoms while I was reading it, and I came to a conclusion that this is perhaps a better first book than Falling Kingdoms because I found myself already loving some of the characters we meet. I loved how there were also no boring parts in this book as there was always something exciting or interesting happening in each chapter which contributed to the overall plot and conflict of the story. If you've read Falling Kingdoms, you'll see some resemblance between the personalities of Crystal (our MC here) and Cleo from FK and same with Farrell and Magnus. Their similarities obviously made me love them instantly because
The Ancient Mytica story was also quite riveting to read, especially because it filled in the gaps and all the unanswered questions in Falling Kingdoms that weren't directly addressed. What I didn't enjoy so much though, was the . You know that I absolutely hate insta-love so much so obviously I rolled my eyes everytime they were together.

A good start to what I think will be a really cool series, but ultimately it fell short in a few areas. However, some really great exciting moments that really fleshed out the history of Mytica for FK fans. I do prefer FK to this though.

I love it! Jesus, this book wasn't quite as good as Falling Kingdoms, but still enjoyable and falling under my favourite genre - urban fantasy.

Well hey, this was pretty neat.
Rhodes basically just made me believe that there is a book out there waiting for me to touch it so I can go into the worlds she created. I mean, how neat is it to think that some of the amazing worlds you read about are real? Like Narnia? Middle Earth? These too classic worlds have lead you to believe they are connected to our world.
This book leads you to believe our world is connected to Mythica.
So there is this secret society that basically play judge and jury. They condemn someone who does nothing by hurt the people they come in contact with and feel the power that comes from their mysterious leader. This whole concept is so interesting to me! Because in some way, which I am not spoiling, this secret society is linked to our beloved Mythica.
A heavy leather-bound book written in an unrecognizable language is delivered to the Speckled Muse by Becca and Crystal Hatcher's Aunt. It was addressed to their mother, but as any responsible daughter would do, Crystal opens it. Becca opens it and touches the book, and is sent into a weird a coma and into the magical world of Mythica.. as a spirit/ghost/lady-who-is-only-seen-by-one-person named Maddox who has a little magic up his sleeve.
Farrell Grayson is probably my favorite character in this whole series. He is the Magnus of this series. He is complicated and torn and rides the line between doing what is right and doing what needs to be done.
This book takes you back into the world of Mythica and mixes it with the modern day. There are secret societies, goddess (the ones we have heard all about in the Falling Kingdom series), necromancers, ghost, lots of deaths, romance, and really bad decisions.
So... what else do we need?

I really loved this one - not quite as much as the original series, but it was a great start to a new one! I really enjoyed the new characters and thought it was so interesting to learn the origin stories of our new cast! Excellent ending that had good wrap up for book 1 but also lots of intrigue for the next book! :D

V v v anticipated buddy read with real life Cleo
I initially thought that this book was would a very close fitted spin-off of the Falling Kingdom series but wow, it’s so much more fast paced and interesting.
A Book of Thieves and Spirits, offers a wonderful rendition of a modern spinoff of the Falling Kingdoms series. It shares the same various point of views that were offered in the initial series but in a much more interesting way. Where book 1 from Falling Kingdoms was monotonous and confusing, this book was lively and mysterious and captivating.
It switches between a contemporary world situated in Toronto, Ontario and a historic Mytica (that some would be familiar with).
I really enjoyed the simultaneous worlds that were offered. It provided a fresh outlook each time the worlds changed and hinted at more thought-provoking ideas (like time travel and parallel universes.)
Now, if I hadn’t read the Falling Kingdom’s series first, I would have most likely found the abrupt change of point of views to be irritating but since I’m already comfortable with it, it didn’t really pose as an issue for me but new readers should be aware.
“It’s The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, one of my all-time favorites. I think we have a few copies in stock.” She showed him to the children’s nook, where she located a copy. He inspected the cover happily.”
When a book gives you nostalgic flashbacks to your childhood, you know it’s a good book. *_*
I absolutely adored all the very Canadian (can finally relate for once) and Mytican (???) references, it made me feel like I was in on some fascinating inside joke (oh my gosh, that sounds so lame).
And the characters! How could I forget? They were epic. The comparison to the Falling Kingdom’s characters is definitely there, thought subtle, which really gave these characters their own personalities. And I really appreciated that!
The ending left me with so many unanswered questions and I really, really NEED the next book and soon!!!

Here we have yet another traditional YA fantasy.
I think everyone knows what "traditional" means by now - a main character who has magical powers but doesn't know they're special yet, an evil ruler dictating the land, plot twists, action, and some romance thrown in the batch.
I'm sorry to say it, but the world building was laughable. The fantasy realm literally consisted of an evil villainess ruling over everyone, some people having magical powers, and some poor villagers. There were no details or explanations beyond that. It even had the same old idea of a "girl going into a fantasy world through a magical book," which I first read in Inkheart.
What I did like were the characters. There was Crys with her love of photography and parent problems, dreamy Becca who loved to read, the rich and spoiled "bad boy" Farrell, who got caught up in a secret society, and Maddox, who was struggling to harness his powers in a world where witches were burned at the stake.
Crys and Becca are sisters who've had a tense relationship ever since their dad left. When a package arrives in the mail, Becca opens it to discover a book - a book that sucks her into another world as soon as she opens the pages.
The four narratives took turns switching from the fantasy world and the real world, where evil forces have to be stopped on both sides. I really liked seeing things play out between Crys and Farrell, who had lots of chemistry, but with him being an evil henchman trying to get information from her, it was far from your average romance.
I'm not sure at this point if I'm going to read any more by Morgan Rhodes. I feel like I've already read A Book of Spirits and Thieves ten times before. That said, I would still recommend it to anyone in the mood for nothing more than a fun, light read.

I'm not sure at this point if I'm going to read any more by Morgan Rhodes. I feel like I've already read A Book of Spirits and Thieves ten times before. That said, I would still recommend it to anyone in the mood for nothing more than a fun, light read.

I finished it! Victorious ! It only made sense at the end though ! 2.5 stars I will make my full review later and tell you guys what I did not like about this book but at the same time I like the ending still. I don't like the instalove that Morgan Rhodes puts in her novels..aghhhh.

Hiya Guys- Welcome to the Nether! Today I am going to be talking about A Books of Spirits and Thieves by Morgan Rhodes. I hope I spelt that title right because of course it is not in front of me and I spell all titles to novels wrong if their not physically here in my presents. This novel is a spinoff series to the most and ever popular Falling Kingdoms series I just read. A lot of the problems I have with that book come up on this book Rhodes WHYYYY. I want a novel without instalove! Like I said in my prior reviews of the Falling Kingdoms series the only one I can believe in her entirety of her novels is Magnus and Cleo! She trying to pull a Magnus and Cleo in this series too and I'm like *face palm* you ALREADY did that! Okay okay I will try to recite the plot in my own words to freshen my memory before getting to the knitty gritty of my points! I know there is going to be Spoilers because I can't keep my big mouth such but it seems you guys read them anyway despite my warnings so here ya goooo..
lol this book is mostly in Modern Day Toronto Canada and Ancient MYTHICA ((like it needs to be there for any reason!))
Crystal H is a annoying ass teenager with parent problems and being a asshole to her sister she can't do anything right. She wants to be a dead beat and not stay in high school, even though she is a senior in high school, because all her friends move alway. When Becca, her younger sister who you find our ISNT HER SISTER ((where did we hear this before- MMMMMM LETS THINK MAGNUS AND LUCIA DOES THIS RING A BELL- DING DONG DING DONG)) opens a package addressed to their mother (( who is annoying as well)) they find a magical leather bound book inside with strange writing. Crystal being a ass opens it to discover it, and her sister being a angel who is a goody too shoes takes it from her, she touches the book and gets sucked into Mythica. Okay now we have several different point of view - once again from four different main characters. We have Crystal- who is like our main character (our Cleo of this story if you will- they even both have a C in their names) and she is well- like I said before stupid and boring. We have Farrell- our Magnus of this story, who is kind of like Magnus where he is EVILLLL the first second and then has good side. ((whoooo have we heard like this beforeeee....you know who!)). We have Becca- Crystal's little sister who has MAGICAL ABILITIES ((mmmmmmm...guess who reminds you of this character- someone named LUCIA for example)) and she is love with a magical being named Maddox who just happens to be Eva's son ((mmmm remind you a Alexis much- Magical creature...?)) okay I am getting a little bit ahead of myself but this book just felt like another Falling Kingdoms in a modern day setting. Wait it's a spin off- with a VERY similar plot.
Point 1: The instalove is KILLING ME. Farrell literally likes Crystal because she smells like strawberries and made him look like a utter douchbag of douchiness. LITERALLY. Maddox automatically falls in love with Becca- because she is pretty and wears strange clothing. MMMMMM....why does all the magical creatures go for the other magical creatures and then suddenly fall in love because of looks- lets ponder this and get back to reality because THIS NEVER HAPPENS THIS IS NOT TRUE DON'T LET YOU GRANDMOTHERS FOOL YOU! I can't stand the romances in Morgan Rhodes novels there are never developed enough for me. The only one she developed ENOUGH for me to believe it is Magnus and Cleo- because loathing can turn to love given the circumstances. Just no can we just say no and move on. This is my second time writing this novel- and probably my first reaction to the romance was the same as this one. I just can't they don't make any scents- maybe if she put some cutesy scenes with the characters more- maybe even some funny ones (( who are not the lame date Crystal and Farrell had- that just felt like a scam Farrell was making Crystal to get info out of her- don't fall in love with a boy you barely know because he BOUGHT YOU A CAMERA)). Okay Okay moving on because if I get into this more it is going to become a rant about how my first review got erased mostly.
Point 2: It's too similar, like I said before, to the first series for me to like this series. I felt like I was rereading the same book I had several weeks ago in my hands, and I was just reading it again with the same plot but different characters, actual worse characters. At least the falling kingdoms series has our cinnamon roll Magnus Danorma in it- this one we get a always drunk Farrell Grayman and his everlasting annoying ass attitude to be everlasting douchy for no reason what so ever. No wonder his mother doesn't love him- it is like he needs a good smack to get his head on straight ((okay that was a bit harsh on my end but STILL GOD STOP BEING A ASS FARRELL)). That and the whole secret society was pretty douchy- they seriously think killing people is the best way to get rid of the bad people in this world. Crystal finds out her father is in it- who is douchy until the very end. There is a bunch of baby daddy drama that frankly I don't care about because guess what - her sister isn't her sister. Guess what...no crystal doesn't sexually love her sister...ew. Don't think like that audience geeze. I still don't know why ancient Mythica is even in this novel- doesn't have to be. I just saying that I didn't like the way it was not original enough- but I just went on on another rant.
Point 3: Side characters were just alright- there was a professor that gets a beating by some bad guys because he knows too much about a bloody magical ass book. There is a crazy aunt who has sex with a crazy a colt man- who is the main villain of this tale- and has Becca. There is some people giving Crystal strange faces when she passes because god damn she just takes pictures of everyone. Other than that- Lukas was a asshole- he dies. That was the only side character I can think of other than Adam, who is the most precious soul in this entire novel- even though of his falling outs and stuff he still gets back on his horse and rides. He tries to do what is best - which is why I love him the best in this entire novel.
Point 4: I did not like the personalities of the characters that much- like I said like three times now they are unoriginal. I think I made the mistake of expecting too much from this book, because I was coming off a Falling Kingdoms binge reading high. I wanted so much, and this story just fell short. It wasn't that I was expecting Magnus and ended up being disappointed, this story just lacked the magic (pun not intended) that Falling Kingdoms has.
It took me forever to even care about these characters, maybe with the exception of Maddox. I'm all about slow burns, but people help me figure out what is going on. Once the story picks up, and you start discovering the secrets, it starts to be a really good read. Unfortunately, that came way too late for me.
This story is set in two worlds; one being modern day Canada, and the other being the world in Falling Kingdoms, Mytica. Two girls, who live in a bookstore, find a strange book their aunt sends them. When one touches the book, it sends her spirit to a witch-boy in Mytica, and leaves her body in a coma with her family in Toronto. Her sister is stuck in the modern day trying to figure out how to get her sister back. She then stumbles upon information about a secret society that her dad is involved in.
Just like in Falling Kingdoms we follow four young characters, even though we only get three points of view:
The young girl that gets transported to Mytica is Becca. She doesn't know how to get home, but she does know that there is only one person in this new world that can see her. She also has some really awesome twists about her (and Maddox) that will completely hook you to their story. Becca is also the character we do not get to see the point of view of. I wish we could have been able to get even just one chapter in her perspective.
The boy that can see Becca is Maddox, who hasn't had the best life and is struggling to learn about his unusual powers. The story between Maddox and Becca was a joy to read, and you can actually feel their true attraction to each other. I could have easily read a whole book about this side of the story, and been happy about it.
Farrell is a dick. I know the author is going to pull the "he's being mind-controlled/brain-washed" card, but the dude is a grade-A douche all on his own. It's going to cause me pain to see him "redeemed" and become the love interest in the next book, if I decided to read it. And he's not only a dick in a rich and privileged way, he's also a dick in the fact he has no manners or respect for women way. He needs to go buy himself a pack of strawberries, and leave our leading lady the fuck alone. He is not only a member of the secret society, but he is assigned to watch, and find out information, about a certain young lady that lives in a bookstore.
Crys is the star of this book, in my opinion, and is going to be the victim of Farrell's redemption. I liked her character, and I really enjoyed the little details about her. Like her goofy shirts and funny mannerisms. She's an aspiring photographer, who is naive and trying to put the pieces of her missing sister's mystery together by herself.
There is also many cameos from Valoria and Cleiona from Falling Kingdoms, because this time period in Mytica is theirs (1,000 year beforemy Magnus Falling Kingdoms).
I could go on and on trying to convince myself I liked this book, but the real thing is that this book didn't come close to how good Falling Kingdoms was. The character development was questionable, the world building wasn't really there, and the story takes forever to get going while trying to make up for it with an explosive end. The premise of this book is really interesting, unique and I can see the potential, but it just didn't work for me.

Loved loved this book so much the characters were all amazing just as good as the characters in the falling kingdoms series if your hesitant to pick this book up please don’t be it’s amazing

4.5 but Farrell Grayson though ^-^
Morgan Rhodes's characterization is my favourite part about her books.Just like in Falling Kingdoms, she perfectly executes the flawed, addictive yet endearing characters. The characters sucked me in and the plot is super twisty and fast-paced, making for an overall extremely engaging experience.
Morgan admitted that as she's kept writing the series, she's become more in tune with the magic and the mythology of Mytica and it shows. A Book of Spirits in Thieves explores more magic than we've seen in Falling Kingdoms and it's interesting to see Mytica unlike the one we've seen before.
The modern day urban fantasy meets high fantasy blend was so unique! The mystery surrounding the Hawkspear society was the best and the cult-like following it amassed was so scary and dreadful. The book had a more darker vibe than I could have anticipated. For it to be set in modern day Toronto and around the neighbourhood's I know so well, it created an even more real atmosphere.
Briefly, I'd like to say all the characters were fantastic, even the evil ones! I love Crystal! She's sassy and sarcastic but she's also the underestimated type yet not naive. She was motivated and independent but not the kind that's thrown in your face like, "look at this strong female!". I love both Maddox and Becca even though we know more about Maddox than Becca in terms of character. Maddox is just loveable I'd say. I think I'm going to enjoy seeing him grow and same goes for Becca (who really needs her POV!). Markus King is so interesting and I got chills from his evilness.
Surprisingly (or not really if you know me), Farrell Grayson was my favourite character hands down. From the first moment he appears on page, I could feel myself sinking down a rabbit hole. Farrell's character development was so freaking brilliant and then seeing him succumb to his "fate" was just heart-wrenching. I know I shouldn't like him but I can't help it. I'm holding out the highest of hopes for him.
I really cannot wait for the next book.
Sidenote: I don't think the cover and marketing for the book do it justice. The cover is misleading because while it does give the high fantasy adventure vibes, there's just more to the story than that. I think you really have to read it to understand.

“His fear vanished and was replaced with steely determination. He would not let the spirit hurt this girl. He would not let anyone hurt this girl.”Daaang, the disappointment is real. I'm a big fun of the Falling Kingdoms series which is why I had the highest expectations for this spin-off series. Sadly, this was the flattest Morgan Rhodes book I've ever read. I didn't find the characters exciting or interesting, the plot was slow and predictable, and I just didn't care what happens next. However, I really liked that we finally got to see and meet at least one of the famous goddesses we've always heard about in the other series.
All in all, I have faith that Morgan Rhodes will be able to bring out the epicness out of it!

• Farrell’s ACTUAL emotions plz yes thank you now would be a good time to end the torture (both his and mine🌚)

Loved this! I can't wait to find out what happens next. I loved Becca and Maddox and I look forward to them being reunited. I also love Crystal. She was kick-ass. Didn't care for Farrell too much though. Even before he got his second mark he was a bit of an asshole. I am curious to see what happens to his character though, especially after that ending. He's a troubled young man but he is certainly no Magnus.
