I loved the crazy-funny mind of a Young Adult!
First off, I have to say how much I loved this book! When Anne Mercier announced that she was going to write a YA book, I wasn’t sure I’d like it, because I’ve always avoided those like the plague, but, I read everything of hers, so of course I was into it. Holy crap, it was amazing! It was fun, witty and one that I enjoyed so much that I had to read it as quick as. So, it went to work with me, and the only breaks from the book were work, and the time taken to post my favourite quote on Ms Mercier’s readers group page.
Told entirely from Jillian’s POV, her inner voice was as funny as a fight. It’s been so many years since I was that age, but my thoughts probably weren’t that much different! I knitted jersey’s in class, pissed off the teachers, and I know I went out of my way to cultivate my potty mouth and to annoy hell out of my best friends’ boyfriend, well, just because...
And, I'm pretty excited about this book, so my review probably contains some spoilers!!!! Sorry.
She’s a marine brat, and because her mother died when she was young, she moves around as her father’s postings change, and stays with her mother’s family while he’s on deployment. She’s also typically a quiet and bookish nerd.
This is the first time Jillian has stayed in California with her Aunt Ruthie, and her two new best friends of two months have formed a tight group. Everyone should have friends like Audrey and Isla! Especially two new friends who drag your sorry ar$e off to a beach party where you happen to meet a real life gorgeous fantasy in the form of a local rich kid who actually seems halfway decent!!
Jillie is not keen on name sharing, because she wants this one-night fantasy to stick. After all, after her father’s deployment ends, they’re moving again, and he’ll be at some rich preppy school, and she ... won’t be. She calls him Jack, to her Jill, and a couple of hours later she’s one V-card lighter and as happy as a sand-boy!! Then karma interferes, and some stupid prank has shut their school, so they all have to combine classes with the local snobbish one. Not only that, guess who she sees on the first day, with a sh!tty attitude and the epitome of the rich school mean girl hanging all over him!
In this new school, with her new friends, and after her evening with ‘Jack’, Jillie now has some gumption, and isn’t going to cave under the evil auspices of this (b)!tch! She’s comfortable in her skin, septum piercing and all, and she’s loyal and grounded. I love her, and her friends, as well as the aunt she’s staying with this deployment. This was one fun book to read!!!
Do be aware that this book ends in a cliff-hanger, but there’s only four weeks to wait, and it’s well-worth it, and I’m someone who hates cliffies with the blazing passion of a thousand suns! 4.5 Stars for this great YA read!!!
