Tibben’s home is inside a Potions Shop built in an old tree in Steadysong Forest. He is an apprentice to Grandpa, a very skilled Potion Master to their Kingdom. Grandpa’s cloak is covered in magical sparkly Glints and Tibben is desperate to get some on his cloak.
Grandpa assures him that he will receive his own Glints – just as soon as he masters potions and that the potions are to help someone.
One morning Grandpa is still in bed when Tibben wakes. He’s almost 100 and it’s nearly time to have a new Potions Master. Tibben is scared and sure that he is a long way from being ready to take over – let alone getting 5 Glints and then passing a special test. But if he doesn’t pass and there is no potions master, Blight will consume the world, overtaking Harmony.
Blight is when there is no water or food for plants and animals and everyone is fearful and sad.
Harmony is when food and water is plenty, beautiful sunsets make you smile and stars are clear and bright at night.
No matter how hard Tibben tries to help their customers, he can’t get the potions right. A royal messenger dog arrives with a message from the King. He and his nearby subjects are being terrorised by a creature that makes the land shake and the ground crumble. Everyone is hiding from it – too afraid to try and conquer it. Grandpa is too old and so he sends Tibben who has little belief in himself.

Absolutely cute and entertaining story. Loved every minute of it.

This is another awesome book from an ace writer & illustrator team. It's their first chapter book, which made it intriguing. Although sadly this means the illustrations aren't colourful like The Fairytale Hairdresser series, they are still highly detailed, clever and funny (check out the cat shaped potion bottle). Despite Tibben being a boy (I much prefer female protagonists) I got rather fond of him, especially as he struggled to make a potion correctly.
There are plenty of surprises for the reader, my favourite being the nature of the beats who Tibben goes off to investigate. That had me smiling for the rest of the book, as I pondered on my expectation of the beast and what it actually was. I'm so glad it will be in future books! Tibben's master reminded me a little like Yoda from Star Wars, and it made me realise that he must be rather old to have so many crystals on his cloak. I cheered Tibben on as he faced all his obstacles!

I read this to my daughter and we both loved it! She loves the Fairytale Hairdresser books, so this was an instant purchase on the strength of those. It's a chapter book, still wonderfully illustrated but the story is more complex, and more rewarding as a result. Here's to more adventures with Tibben!
