Three years ago, the small town of Britteridge was rocked by the senseless murder of Gail Ludlum. Now the people most affected by the tragedy have returned to the place where it all began, and the scene is set for the perfect revenge . . . Megan O’Connor’s life was shattered when she was unwittingly drawn into a kidnapping plot that ultimately led to the murder of an innocent woman. Though the road to redemption has been long, she’s finally found happiness with her recent engagement to a wonderful man, a pillar of the community. But amid the chaos of wedding planning, the return of Gail Ludlum’s son to Britteridge sets in motion a disturbing sequence of events. Soon Megan finds herself the victim of a series of cruel deceptions that indicate one thing: her past mistakes have not been forgiven or forgotten. As the mischief escalates to dangerous levels, it becomes clear that someone is determined to avenge Gail’s death. And he won’t rest until he’s taken a life for a life.
Stephanie Black has loved books since she was old enough to grab the pages, and has enjoyed creating make-believe adventures since she and her sisters were inventing long Barbie games filled with intrigue and danger or running around pretending to be detectives. She is a four-time Whitney Award winner for Best Mystery/Suspense novel.
Stephanie lives in California, in the Bay Area. She plays the violin in a community symphony (but never practices enough), enjoys homemade chocolate-chip cookies, and takes pictures of birds. Her favorite activity is spending time with her family, currently consisting of her husband, five kids, three kids-in-law, a cat, and three grandpets.
Played for a Fool is the second book with these main characters. You should really read the first book, Fool Me Twice, before reading this book. It will help with understanding the background and characters. It had been awhile since I read Fool Me Twice so it took me a minute to remember and find my groove with the characters.
This is a light suspense novel and a continuation of Megan's life since the last book. She is now engaged to married and working hard as a student to get a degree. Bad things start happening to Megan again- hate mail, cruel tricks and deceptions.
Many times in suspense novels, you don't know who the bad guy really is but you have a list of potential suspects. In this novel, you know exactly who the bad guys are and you know exactly what they are doing. You get the story from both perspectives- the perp and the victim. It's amazing to me that even though I knew who the bud guys were, and I knew what was going to happen, I was still on the edge of my seat. Crazy stuff, that. I found myself reading faster and faster until I had to force myself to slow down. ha.
I hope poor Megan gets a break now and is able to live a healthy, happy life. Hopefully the next book, which I look forward to reading, will have new characters in a new place. Stephanie Black is a fun author and if you love suspense with a touch of romance, you should check her out.
This is an LDS fiction book but there is nothing religious expressed in this book. There is a mention of where the couple hopes to be married in connection with LDS temples, but that is it. This book is clean (no swearing or sexual situations).
This is a sequel to Fool Me Twice, which I read in 2010 so I didn't remember a lot of details of what previously happened. The author gives plenty of information, though, so you get the idea of what happened before and I think this will work well as a standalone.
Three years ago, some bad things happened in the town of Britteridge and Megan played a part in it. She was innocent and had been duped by her twin sister, Kristin, who is now in prison for what she had done. Megan is now engaged to Trevor and going to school so her life seems pretty great. We learn that someone is not happy with the charmed life Megan seems to lead and thinks she needs to pay for what happened. Things quickly spiral out of control and the danger is real.
Megan isn't perfect and allowed her sister to manipulate her years ago but has worked hard to restore her reputation. Trevor has seen that and, once he got to know her and realized she wasn't like her sister, they were able to start and maintain a relationship. He has some insecurities which allow him to momentarily believe some of the things that surface regarding Megan and how she really might feel. They have to learn to trust each other in order to figure out what's really happening.
We learn from the beginning who's behind the plan to ruin Megan and why. The desire to get revenge was a reaction to information that was received and quickly took on a life of its own. The characters involved weren't likable and one of them got darker and more desperate as the story progressed.
Clean suspense is my favorite type of book to read and this fits the bill! There is some violence, which isn't graphic. The romance is pretty light. I loved this book from beginning to end!
I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.
Just like every other mystery/suspense book I've read by this author, I should realize I can't just pick up the book, read for awhile and walk away. No, I make this mistake every time. I pick up the book read, then read some more, realize it's midnight and I have to teach the next day, but I still can't put the book down, and keep reading until I pass out. It was pure torture to work all day and have to wait until I came home to finish the book.
Played for a Fool is one of those books where you know exactly who is behind all of the crazy things happening to the main character, but you just don't know how or when the next thing is going to happen. You worry and panic for main character Megan O' Connor whose life is finally settling down after tragedies that had happened three years before. Just when Megan thinks maybe she can have a normal life with her twin sister in jail for murder and kidnapping, the past has come back to start wrecking havoc in her life by making it look like Megan is as bad as her sister. It's really frustrating when even Megan's finance Trevor starts thinking that Megan is behind the strange things happening; after all it was his kid sister that was kidnapped by Megan's sister and almost killed and Megan was duped into helping with the kidnapping. There is a lot of action and much deception in this novel. Just when you think things are starting to settle down, guess what? It's time for more crazy action that will keep you strapped to this novel. As I said earlier, be prepared to set aside a day to read this book, because it's very hard to put down. The interesting characters and the schemes going on all around, will keep this book in your hands and your mind whirling, way after you have read the last page. Another winner for author Stephanie Black!
I didn't read the first book with the main characters, but I feel like the circumstances in the first book are well covered throughout this book. In a sleepy college town, rumors and mischief reign when events from three years prior come back to light. It's suspenseful and exciting and tricky to find out what's going to happen and how it happens.
Okay, let me start by stating yet again, I didn't know that this was book 2. UGH. Having said that I don't think I missed all that much from book one. Okay, probably not true, but I didn't feel lost. Does that make sense?
I bought this book on CD to listen to in my car. Sometimes I have my ipod with me (well most times), but sometimes I just like to pop in a CD and listen. My kids usually end up enjoying the books as well...so it's good for all.
I enjoyed this story. I really did. I did NOT like the narrator. So, IF you decide to read this book take my advice and read it. Don't listen to it. A bad narrator for me can ruin a book. Thankfully I liked this one enough, that I let the annoying voice slide. It's not that she didn't read well, I just didn't think she conveyed the intensity of the book very well. It seemed too "ehh" for me.
This was an exciting book. I have always wanted to be a twin. I never thought about having an evil twin. Probably because I would have been the evil twin..hehehe. Any way, to have a twin who tried to kill you. Umm, no thank you.
Megan's life is complicated, and seems to get more so when Bryce is let out of jail for his part in the kidnapping of her now fiance's sister Rachel. With Megan's sister in jail for life in her part of the kidnapping and murder, the Drakes, and Megan thought the worse was behind them. Bryce may be out of jail, but he seems to be doing what he is suppose to. Yet, Megan is getting threatening letters, and someone is out there trying to make her look bad.
There are still plenty of people who probably don't want Megan to marry the most eligible bachelor of their small town Trevor Drake, but Megan had no idea the lengths people would to go to make sure it didn't happen.
The story has lots of twist and turns, and is exciting. I was blow away at the lengths some people would go to jut to get back at someone they thought did wrong. Granted Megan was not innocent at the beginning of this whole scheme, but had made up for it when she found out the depth of the deception. Attempted murder, mayhem, kidnapping, you name it, it probably happens in this book. It's so exciting.
I love how it came together and how well it was done. I just wish I would have read it, and not listened. Oh well, the book itself was still really good.
I hope you take the chance to read it. It's an exciting, clean, intense book.
The first book, Fool Me Twice, introduces the reader to the storyline. Played for a Fool picks up a few years later. I read the previous book about seven years ago and remembered bits and pieces, but it took me awhile to refresh my memory. If possible, I would suggest reading Fool Me Twice first, so that the setting, situation, and characters are fresh in mind. Once I got my bearings, I was completely engrossed in this story.
Megan's twin sister is in prison and Megan is moving on with her life, now engaged to a great guy, Trevor. Megan begins receiving hate mail and having minor crimes committed against her, all in a way that tries to prove she's crazy and a bad person. I can't imagine living in that kind of suspense, always looking over my shoulder, but Megan manages well and takes it all in stride--for a time. She's a very likable character and tries hard to provide for and support herself.
I like Trevor and his family and when events start happening, my heart went out to Megan for their lack of initial trust, but really...it started to become difficult to know whom to trust and whom not to. I do love a good, clean romance, but romance took the back burner in this story. I still really loved it!
The interesting twist with this story is that the reader knows who the bad guy is, but the main characters don't. Although the reader knows, it's still quite suspenseful because the motive is missing--why the revenge? Why the dangerous mischief? I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to find the answers and to see the story play out. I only wish I would've brushed up on Book 1 first.
Content: no language; mild violence (non-graphic); very mild romance; mild religious elements (two or three very brief mentions of religious things pertaining to the LDS faith). Clean!

Fool Me Twice is my all-time favorite of Stephanie Black suspense thriller. Played For A Fool is a sequel, taking place 3 years after the first. You don't HAVE to read Fool Me Twice first, but I highly recommend it.
Where Fool Me Twice kept us guessing as to who the master-mind was through most of the book, in Played for a Fool, we (the readers) know right up front who the crazies are. This time, it’s a race against time. Can the characters figure it out before someone ends up dead? Let’s just say it was a fun ride. I was continuously surprised by the twisted cleverness of the one pulling the strings. I devoured this book in one day.
I liked way Megan, the main character, has grown and changed in those years. My favorite character was Bryce, ex-con trying to be a better person. At first, I didn’t like him so much. I thought he was just a loser. But as the book went on, I saw more sides of him and really came to appreciate his challenge. Contrasting him with Noah was almost a case-study in the damaging effects of anger and bitterness. There were just a few places where I wanted more characterization than was delivered, but not enough to take off points. Some of the characters are LDS (Mormon) but other than mentioning a temple wedding, there really was no religion in the book.
This book is way suspenseful! It's about Megan, she's a young woman who lives in the town of Britteridge. She let her twin sister, Kristen, talk her into helping her kidnap a young woman. Megan ended up saving the young woman's life, but there are many people that just won't let it go. Now Kristen is in prison and Megan is trying to move on with her life. But someone has decided that Megan must pay for what she did and they are set on making her life miserable. Can Megan figure out who is after her before it's too late?
I remember reading Fool Me Twice, the book that precedes this one, but I can't remember all the details and that was kind of bugging me the whole time I was reading this one. I'll have to see if I can re-read it! This book can stand alone and make perfect sense, the author did a great job making sure of that. The plot is super suspenseful. It's one of those books where you want to scream at the person to not go into that room! I love the way that the author made it so the reader knows what's going on before the characters do.
I thought that the characters were really well written. I liked Megan and there's enough other characters that you are able to see the events through that you really get a good picture of who everyone is and what's going on.
This is one of those books that you won't want to put down, it's really amazing!
Three years ago Meagan was fooled by her identical twin into giving her an alibi for a crime. That story is found in Fool Me Twice. Unfortunately I did not read that book before reading this one. It took me a while to get caught up with the story.
This book is well written and full interesting characters. You know from the beginning who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Meagan is such a sweet and likable person. She has a forgiving nature and it is easy to see how she allowed herself to be placed in a bad situation.
The bad guy is a vindictive turkey. He is not forgiving and lets it rule his actions.
The book is full of suspense. It is very easy to get caught up in the story and the characters.
This is the first book of Stephanie Black's that I have read. It definitely will not be the last. I realize that I have a couple of her books on my TBR shelf and I look forward to reading them. I really want to read "Fool Me Twcice"!
This suspense-thriller captivated me. Megan O’Connor has put the tragic past behind her after visiting her twin sister in prison—the same sister who tried to kill her when she foiled her kidnapping plot 3 years ago. But when sinister ruses start happening to her, it becomes painfully clear that someone hasn’t forgotten the past…or forgiven Megan for the part she played in it. I couldn’t put this book down. The villain was a complete mastermind who kept me in awe with their brilliant tricks and plots. I really loved how twisted the plot became as I turned each page. This isn’t my normal genre I enjoy, but I was fascinated by Stephanie Black’s writing. The characters had layers of depth that made them come to life in my mind. I loved the hero and heroine, but the villains and side characters were just as well done. ***I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review, and I highly recommend it. This one’s a winner.
As I was reading this book I kept wondering if it was the second book in a series; turns out it is. Now I understand more how this book was written so I will think about adding a ⭐️ to my review. Maybe. I still didn’t get too involved in the book. The character development was not the best. But since I was supposed to have known most of them already that could explain why there was not. I was disappointed that I didn’t get to figure out “who did it”. You are told from the beginning. So not much suspense or anything to keep me involved in the story. There is one chapter near the end that comes close, but that’s it.
I also don’t like that the main character was too perfect. Three years isn’t very long to completely change your personality. 🤷♀️ Relationships and character flaws are “all better” too easily.
Stephanie Black’s Played for a Fool is the follow up to her 2011 novel Fool Me Twice, in which one twin assumes her sister’s identity in order to incite mayhem in the lives of a wealthy family in a small Massachusetts town, and which ends with the murder of one of the family members. When the Played for a Fool opens, the bad twin is in jail, and Megan, the good twin, is engaged to the dead woman’s nephew. While Megan may think her life is finally coming together, it seems evident that many people don’t want to let her put the past behind her, and others still want to avenge the death in the first novel. I had a hard time with Played for a Fool. While there are some novels where it doesn’t matter too much if you’ve read the previous book (like the Anne Perry mysteries), Played for a Fool was a book where I really felt like the context of the previous book mattered.
I almost gave this two stars rather than three as 2/3 of the book is told from the thoughts of people rather than dialogue or action. A two minute scene would take a whole chapter as every thought of each character involved was presented. That drove me crazy. You could call the the book of lamentation and it would be appropriate. Every one of the characters needed some serious counseling. This is the second book in the series and I was interested to read as the first book ended a little abruptly. Part of me wishes I wouldn’t have bothered. Trevor turned out to be much weaker in this book than the first book. Rachel was annoying. Trevor’s mom was paranoid. I never liked Megan’s mother, she is a nut job. Don’t get me started on the main villain as she was crazy AND scary! I will say that I did get sucked in and anxious for the outcome so not all bad.
Published 7 years after the first book (Fool Me Twice) maybe I was meant to allow more time between readings. A little of the anxiety of the story was lost because of the close reads …. maybe 🤷♀️
The story picks up 3 years after the end of the first book. Things are going swimmingly. Then one event sets a whole lot of trouble in motion.
The secondary characters from book one are still here but feel like shadows of themselves. The lack of confidence in one of our main characters, Trevor, actually was a little annoying in the way it was banged on over and over. A little would have let us know what was going through his head, but it was too much.
The plot was good, until it mimicked the first book. Maybe with more space between readings it wouldn’t have been so cliche.
Great choice if you’re looking for a clean suspenseful read.
I wasn't sure if I'd like this one as it's a sequel but omgosh I think I like it better knowing both sides of what's happening but with lots of twists and turns along the way. Stephanie Black writes suspense really really well. Clean. Creepy. Happy ending.
I don't know why the book is titled the way it is but it was a good read - suspense without gore, wonderful engaged couple & true friends standing up under horrible pressure.
I really enjoyed the first book in this duo (Fool Me Twice) and read it a couple of times over the years. I enjoyed this sequel as well - although not as much as the first one :)
I am pretty sure this is a sequal to something because a lot of background information was needed. Twin sisters one good the other evil, on in prison the other about to marry into a wealthy family. A mystery person feels the good twin should be punished and hires another crazy person to frame her and drive her out of town. It gets messy and she gets kidnapped.... Violence yes to be expected in a mystery, suspense book. Sex, no. Language, no.
Stephanie is a master at this genre. I had not read FOOL ME TWICE, and I think it would have helped me in the beginning when I first started reading, but Stephanie does a fantastic job of catching up the reader. Seriously, the one book I hadn't read of hers! :) Once I had everyone where they needed to be in my head, the story took off. I loved the twist of knowing who the bad guy was and his "reasoning" of why he does what he does. Creep city! I also enjoyed the POV switches. Bravo to Stephanie, again, for doing that so well, as she always does. Poor Megan, though, poor Megan. The twists in this book are awesome, and once you think the calm has come, look out!
5 out of 5 stars. Did you hear me screaming from my house, because WOW!! Don't make any plans until you are done reading, because you won't be able to stop. With its heart-pounding suspense, you won't be able to turn the pages fast enough.
Received a paperback copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This is the sequel to Fool Me Twice. It could be a stand alone mystery, but I think it helps to read the other book first to understand all the characters. This is a different type of mystery in that it's told from multiple perspectives and you know who the perpetrators are. That doesn't mean that it isn't suspenseful and doesn't keep you on the edge of your seat. The main perpetrator is so twisted that it is suspenseful just seeing how far she will go to torment poor Megan and make her look bad.
This mystery is also great because there is no swearing and no sexual content other than kissing. It's listed as LDS fiction, but there is barely any mention of religion and I think that it would appeal to any mystery fan not just LDS readers. I really like this author and look forward to her next book.
