Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth

Rate this book
Man's best friend! What better way to showcase adoptable dogs than by letting their true personalities shine in a photo booth! In the tradition of the best-selling dog photography book, Underwater Dogs, Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth wins the heart of all dog lovers.

Often seen as sad, rejected, and behind cold metal bars, it's no wonder people would avoid images of shelter dogs awaiting forever homes. From talented photographer (and now public figure and adoption champion) Guinnivere Shuster comes Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth, a guaranteed-to-make-you-smile photo book featuring shelter dogs in a brand-new light. Get ready to see the cutest canine portraits you’ve ever seen! Guinnevere’s fantastic photos went viral  and have been featured on websites, in magazines, and on television programs all over the world: Good Morning America, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, The Huffington Post, Time, The Daily Mail . . . even celebrities have gotten in on the action: Amy Poehler, Cesar Millan, and Zooey Deschanel have made statements and posts declaring their love of Guinnevere’s work. After the adorable and up-for-adoption photos of these furry friends were seen and enjoyed by millions, adoption rates at Utah's Humane Society skyrocketed.

The book features 100 dog photo booth style photographs, each accompanied by a short story about the dog's personality, how the dog ended up in the shelter, and the adoption date. A follow-up will conclude the book, with photos of some of them with their new families.

A portion of the proceeds of this book will benefit the Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society.

MY BLOG: Melissa Martin's Reading List

I totally love this book and it's already on my Amazon wishlist to buy! I wish I could take pictures of shelter dogs like this wonderful photographer, to be able to help the dogs in this way is such a wonderful idea.

The pictures of all the dogs were funny, sweet and so darn cute. The author even gave a little synopsis of the dog at the bottom of their pictures. I won't go into that too much as people make me so mad, and lets just leave it at that.. oh and please research a dog before you get one to see if it fits with who you are and your lifestyle so we can help keep them out of shelters!

In the back of the book, the author added a few pictures of the dogs that have been adopted, I wish we could have seen pictures of all of them in happy homes :-) I do hope all of the ones adopted got to stay in the home that chose them.

Once again, the pictures of these beautiful dogs are amazing and some really funny. I enjoyed this book immensely and like I said, I do intend to buy it when it comes out, not only because of the beautiful pictures but also because the proceeds go to the Utah Animal Shelter where these pictures where taken and Best Friends Animal Society where I have been a member for years! :-) Kudos!

Well OF COURSE I had to take a peek at this dang thing. And a portion of the proceeds go to charity????? You can bet your ass I’ll be buying a copy of this one for the coffee table. There's not much to say about this little book - it's pictures of dogs taken in a photo booth with a little blurb about how they ended up in the shelter along with their adoption date. Like this . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography

^^^^Yes please. He comes to live with me now okay?????

If you haven't considered adopting a dog, there's probably something wrong with you. Ha! I keed. Sorta. Seriously, though, shelter dogs are the best. Just look at some of the great personalities you can find if you take a look . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography

^^^^A face only his mother could love ; )

Palm Springs commercial photography

^^^^Don't even waste your time. Shelby already has every dog agency in the country on notice that they might as well just drop these guys off at her house.

Palm Springs commercial photography

^^^^Hehehehe. 'Nuff said.

Palm Springs commercial photography

^^^^I think he got adopted by a family from Colorado.

Palm Springs commercial photography

^^^^If I get reincarnated when I die I'd like to be this guy.

Palm Springs commercial photography

^^^^#hooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwl. Ahhhhhh, sweet revenge for the yappy ass neighbor dog!

Anywho, this is a great little book for a great cause.

I would be remiss if I didn't share my own shelter dog. Many of you know that I have an affinity for undead pets. For maybe the only time ever those critters will not be the focus of the images contained in this review. Today I take my inspiration from the book and present to you MY shelter dog, Harvey . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography
(Go Hawkeyes)

Well, actually I have two mutts, but due to the fact that he’s 100% certain the camera is a way to steal his soul this is about the most you’re ever going to see of Bad Bad Leroy Brown . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography

And while Harvey may not be the BEST dog ever (he eats his own poop and humps the cat incessantly), I couldn't imagine life without him. Welllll, sometimes when I'm trying to read and the kids aren't home I might let my mind wander a bit . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography

But aside from those few hours each week, he's pretty great. Man's Boy's best friend and all that jazz . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography

NO DJANGO! STAY UP THERE WITH THE SMALL HUMAN OR HARVEY WILL HUMP THE CRAP OUT OF YOU!!!!!!

Many thanks to Jan for being the first to turn all of us crazy pet hoarders onto to such a wonderful little book!

I am a huge animal lover. Huge. While I love most animals, I am really very partial to dogs. I am also a really big supporter of shelters and everything that they do for the animal population. My house is pretty filled with animals from my local shelter. We currently have 3 dogs and 1 cat that were all adopted from our local Humane Society.

I don't know why but I love looking at the photos of dogs waiting for their forever homes. We adopted 2 puppies from the Humane Society during the last few months of 2015 largely because of this. My husband has now banned me from the Humane Society's website. Like he can actually stop me. So I look and always feel a little sad that they are there waiting to find someone to love them as much as I love mine.

I kind of feel like this book was made just for me. Each page brought me wonderful pictures of great looking dogs along with a few tidbits about the animal. And the best part.....almost all of these dogs have found their happily ever after! I really loved the last section of the book that showed some of the animals now. Sometimes they were alone, sometimes with their new doggie siblings, and sometimes with their human family but they always looked really very happy.

I would highly recommend this book to animal lovers like myself. I think that it is absolutely wonderful that a portion of the proceeds from this book will go to the Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society. I applaud the author for all of the time that she has making sure so many shelter animals have a wonderful photo to help them in their search for a forever family. Sometimes all it takes it a photo to fall in love.

Oh, hello!
You looking at me?

WHAT.IS.THAT.SMELL? DID.YOU.JUST.FART?
Euhm...no. Wasn't me.

Yo man! Whuzzup! Imma tha Grizz, dats ThA G.R.I.Z.Z.

I'm so happy happy happy
So blisfully happy.
I'm so happy happy happy

My favorite, however, was Sully. Oh how he reminds me of this half Mastiff/Great Dane breed I had. Those flappy ears, the jowls, the slobber, that massive head, the old man's look. Did I mention the slobber???

And as with any of the dogs portrayed in this book, he found himself a nice comfy home

The images are priceless, the dogs are adorable and I had to smile at each and everyone of them. Many of them were shot while the dog was waiting for a treat, or had just received one, so although I do understand that it might have been difficult to keep their attention, I would have liked to see more sponteanous moments.
The blurbs underneath the photos give us a slight peak into the dog's personality, and while lovingly written, it became boring after awhile. There wasn't much variety and I for one would have loved to read more of how they actually happened ending up at the shelter. Not only that their previous owners moved or family dynamics changed, etc. More details please!
The last part of the book shows a few of the dogs within their new environment. You can see, even feel, how much they love their new home.

I hope this book raises the awareness and publicity for animal shelters. How much they do to give dogs a better life. And also awareness that caring for a dog requires a lot, that it is not just a toy you can discard at a whim.
Cause this.

My heart is full!

Awhile back I read an article about the author and her efforts to help sheltered dogs find their forever home. I saw this cover in the NetGalley library and had to grab it.

Great picture book with bios on the most adorable dogs with follow up photos after they've been placed.

I have two adopted fur babies at home myself, and if I had the means and the space, there would be many more. I applaud the author's efforts, and am a bit jealous of how much fun doing these photo shoots must have been.

Grab yourself a copy-I'd bet money on the fact that your day will improve greatly!

Full disclosure: I volunteer on weekends as a dog socializer at my local animal shelter, and on weekdays, I routinely stalk the dogs I worked with on our website, checking daily to see who got adopted and who has new pictures or videos. When I saw a book promising cute photographs of shelter dogs, I couldn't resist.

Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth is indeed chock-full of adorable doggy pictures and stories. I really hope it has positive impact and raises awareness about shelters. There are a few dogs in the book who are listed as "still waiting" for a forever home, but I'm sure the book itself will guarantee their adoptions. I firmly believe that shelters are the best place to get a pet: you're not only saving a dog from potential euthanasia (and about 50% of shelter dogs in the US are euthanized, by the way); you're also getting a companion who has seen the worst of humanity and still will give you unconditional love.

In terms of the book, I thoroughly enjoyed each of the dog's stories and images, but I think it suffers somewhat from the format. Each dog has exactly four photographs laid out in precisely the same way with a short blurb underneath. More problematically, it quickly becomes clear that all of the interactions being photographed are treat throws. (They look like Beggin' Strips to me.) Occasionally I could even see some whale eyes and flattened ears in non-treat photographs, which are standard signs of stress, fear, and anxiety. I spend a lot of time with dogs, and their expressions when they're actually interacting with humans are very different from their food-focused faces, so I felt like the pictures, while cute, didn't really capture their true personalities. My favourite section was easily right at the end, where the book gives us some "happy ending" shots of the dogs with their new families. Here, finally, we get to see some of the dogs' real personalities. Speaking of which, if you do adopt a dog, please please please send the shelter some "happily ever after" pictures and stories--you will make the volunteers' day.

Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth is an adorable idea and I hope it gives animal shelters some much-needed publicity. If you're looking for some cute puppy faces, it may be worth a look. Even better, head down to your local shelter and pick up a photo booth puppy of your very own.

A beautiful book that highlights the uniqueness of Shelter Dogs in the most heartfelt way. I loved it from the get go, initially because of the intriguing concept and later on for the way it was executed.
The only comment i can note: what a shame that there aren't more books like this one, to educate and raise awareness.

The moment i saw this title on Netgalley i knew that i had to get it. No matter what i expected, it ended up being so much better. With impromptu, goofy and adorable photos, a short paragraph featuring each dog's individual journey along with "a look at us now" segment, this book has it all and it makes it hard not to fall in love with those beautiful creatures.

Congratulations to the Humane Society of Utah for the incredible work they keep doing for so many years Because finding a new home and giving a second chance to dogs who otherwise wouldn't have made it, is a real miracle.

By now, most animal lovers have seen or heard of the photos of shelter dogs taken in photo booths. “Shelter Dogs In A Photo Booth” is a collection of these photos, along with the stories of how they came to be in the shelter and their adoptions.

It’s wonderful to get to see the dogs’ personalities show through. All too often they cannot show their true nature in shelters, and it causes many wonderful animals to be passed by. The photos are a true delight and the book will make a great addition to any animal lover’s collection. It is also a wonderful gift idea for those in your life who have dogs.

An added bonus is that a portion of the proceeds go to the Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society. If you’ve never heard of the latter, it is the home of the Vicktory Dogs who were unable to be adopted for various reasons. The ones who were adopted went through rehab there and much was learned about how to rehabilitate fighting dogs, which will save many lives in the future. The work they do is extraordinary.

As an owner of former shelter dogs, there was no way I could bypass this. Featuring 100 shelter dogs showing off their unique personalities in a set of stunning photo booth pictures and each with a little biography, this was utter cuteness overload.
Some of the proceeds of this wonderful book go towards the Best Friends Animal Society and the Humane Society of Utah. It's a perfect gift for dog lovers or simply an eye-catching coffee table book. There will also be a wall calendar published, which I had to pre-order right away.
Our Jack Russell is now 18-years-old and there has been some talk about trying to see what life in an upcoming dog-free household could be like.....yeah, so not going to happen.
One look at the pictures and the stories in this lovely book and I can see another trip to a dog shelter in our future.

Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth by Guinnevere Shuster is a delightful and uplifting book of dogs from a shelter in a photo booth. Page after page of the most unique and mesmerizing poses of dogs of all sizes, shapes, colors, and breeds. The images are crystal clear and each image is so special. Each dog has four images each and each picture is a hoot! I bet they had so much fun picking through all the pictures for this book. The book is arranged nicely with the dog's brief, creatively written, backgrounds. This is listed with each dog to fill the reader in on these wonderful pups. At the end of the book, some of the dogs are shown as they are today with their new families.
My heart felt good reading this book, I smiled all the way through it. What a perfect gift for someone who thinks they have everything, for those who love animals, or those that need a pick-me-up. Lovely book!

I have only just downloaded this book- but what a gem. Anyone who loves dogs will adore this book. It's full of 'photo booth' type shots of the dogs in a shelter with their history where known. Heartwarmingly they all have their forever adoption date and there are photos of their new families at the back.
It's lovely to see them finding new homes and the new life that they all deserve. I could dip into this book every time I need a smile!

The Most Adorable Book Ever! Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth features dogs that found themselves at a humane society in Utah. Guinnevere gets the dogs out of the cages and uses treats to capture cute, adorable, and even funny pics of the dogs she met. When you need a dog to brighten your day open up this book!
I'm glad a portion of the book sales will return to the shelter. However, I think some information about adopting a shelter dog should be included. Maybe some tips like what to expect and how to handle bringing a new dog home!

Rating: 5*

Review: This fabulous photo-book highlights the good work that a humane shelter in Utah does with cute and funny photos of some of the dogs to have passed through its doors.

Also included is a short description of the dog and the reason why they were given to the shelter. I've got to honest, reading these always makes me angry - people giving up their pets because they are moving or the puppy was too boisterous or playful, taking up too much time - seriously, you got a DOG what did you think was going to happen?! - are all too commonplace and it makes me despair in the human race.

On the other hand, hurray to all the dogs' lovely new owners who gave them the home and love they deserve.

This book is a must have for dog lovers, especially all those who have rehomed rescue animals (cats for me!).

I loved this book! I have volunteered before for one of our local shelters and there was someone who came in and took photos of the pets. This absolutely did help some of the cats and dogs get adopted. The photos were often posted on social media and helped to raise awareness of the great personalities of shelter pets. Loved these beautiful pictures from this book. Highly recommended!! 5 stars.

I saw this on Netgalley as a read now and grabbed it. I am so glad I did. Can't wait to see the finished copy. And I love a happy ending. :-)

And, we have a few shelter pets, as well, at my house.

As a dog lover, I MUST have a printed copy of this for my coffee table. This volume is filled with fun, candid snapshots of shelter dogs: complete with a story telling about their background.

As the unofficial photographer for my partner's German-Wirehair Pointers, I know how difficult it ts to get great shots of pups. Shuster might have the right idea....just take crazy, zany shots.

The best part of this book is the happy ever after stories and photos shared in the back.

Why this book is so wonderful and needs to be read by all:
1) Cute while simultaneously hilarious and unique photo booth style portraits of dogs. That in itself should make anyone pick this book up.
2) Each of the dogs photographed comes with a description of the dog, and the adoption date of each cutie. :)
3)Proceeds go to Utah Animal Shelter and Benefits Animal Rescue.
4) See above for more options because this book is too amazing to pass up on!

Epic Photos for an Awesome Cause

(Full disclosure: I received a free ebook for review through NetGalley.)

Every year, approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters; of these, 3.9 million are dogs. Roughly 35% are adopted, while another 26% are reunited with their families. The remaining 26% are killed, usually for lack of homes.* This translates to a staggering 1.2 million dogs (not to mention 1.4 million cats) per year.**

Given the overwhelming scope of the problem, animal shelters and welfare groups have gotten pretty darn creative in their rescue efforts - aimed at both placing animals in homes, as well as preventing them from entering the system to begin with. For example, some groups offer grants to low-income pet owners who are facing unexpected veterinary bills. Others provide free or low-cost checkups and spay/neuter services to those in need.

Nonprofits that focus on humans have gotten into the act as well. With an increasing awareness of the link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence comes programs that cater to both human and nonhuman victims. For instance, domestic violence shelters are starting to open their doors to the companion animals of their human clients, as a sizable percentage survivors refuse to leave their furry friends behind.

(I volunteer as a foster home for one of two such groups in the Kansas City area, and it's extremely rewarding. In particular, I find it easier to foster dogs who already have homes. Don't get me wrong, I still fall in love with them, but at least I know I have to give them back. Otherwise I'm likely to adopt myself out of fostering in no time flat. Anyway, I cannot recommend it enough.)

In a similar vein, there also exist programs that place the companion animals of deployed and injured/recovering service members in foster homes (usually for three months up to a year or more). Ditto: regular civilians facing unexpected hospital stays. Other groups advocate for service members' rights (such as fighting breed bans on military bases) and provide financial services when needed. Initiatives like these help keep beloved companions out of the shelter system, free up kennel space for truly homeless or unwanted animals - and keep families together in the long term. It's a win-win. (For more information, start with Guardian Angels for Soldier's Pet, PACT for Animals, and Dogs On Deployment.)

With the advent of the Internet, online profiles have become an important tool for animal shelters and rescue groups. An entertaining, informative profile - on Petfinder, Adopt a Pet, and/or the group's own website - is a must. Bonus points if you can include one or more professional photographs that highlight the animal's unique personality. (Some dogs even star in their own videos or have Facebook pages or Instagram and Twitter accounts!) Luckily, photographers like Guinnevere Shuster are stepping up to help. Whether volunteering their talents to local shelters, matching their colleagues up with rescues in need, or raising the money to buy photography equipment for open-admission shelters (see, e.g., The Perfect Exposure Project), photographers have so much to offer. (So if you are one, please think about volunteering? Pretty pretty please?)

Guinnevere Shuster began photographing adoptable animals her junior year of college; to date, she's had more than 6,000 models. The dogs found in Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth all called the Humane Society of Utah (HSU) home, if only for a short time. They were picked up as strays; surrendered by owners who didn't have the time or money to care for them; given the boot by their family's landlords; rescued from a life on a chain; displaced by a death in the family and grieving their humans; or transferred in from other shelters. HSU is an open-admission shelter that doesn't limit the length of time an animal can remain in the program.

The book features four photo booth-style pictures of 105 dogs; each set is accompanied by a brief paragraph about the subject. At the end of the book, we're treated to "where are they now?" follow-ups on 17 of the lucky pups. All of the photos were taken in 2015, mostly in the latter half of the year. All but one of the dogs has been adopted; Willow is still in foster care, being treated for mange.

With the help of peanut butter, Beggin' Strips (a few of the dogs appear in IG ads for the treats), and a whole lotta patience and goofiness, Shuster's photos are at turns silly, serious, playful, and soulful - but always stunningly gorgeous. It's hard to pick a favorite, though it seems only fair that cover dog Buzz should be taken out of the running. (He did already land the cover, you know?)

Personally, I'm partial to Wallace; not only do I have a thing for tripods, but his missing eye reminds me of my late dachshund, Ralphie.

null

Tater Tot gets an honorable mention, if only because I've fostered a few really rad Yorkies and he reminds me of two of the three.

null

Okay, okay. Just one more! I have to include Atticus, otherwise the ghosts of my childhood dogs Bucky and Cap (as in Captain America; my dad named 'em) will haunt me for sure. They were St. Bernard/Collie mixes and just the best dogs a girl could ask for.

null

I also love that Shuster includes dogs who typically have a harder time getting adopted: pit bulls and pit bull-type dogs; mutts (though there are quite a few purebreds to be found here!); adult and senior dogs; tripods and otherwise disabled dogs; "ugly" dogs (don't worry Willow, I think you're beautiful!); black dogs; there's even one bonded pair! (I've adopted two bonded pairs now - Kaylee & Jayne and Mags & Finnick - and it's the best feeling in the world. Like adopting one dog, but while riding a unicorn over a rainbow after a glitter storm.)

Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth has been compared to Underwater Dogs, but I find it more reminiscent of Melissa McDaniel's work. Each book in her series, The Photo Book Projects, highlights a different group of overlooked or marginalized dogs - Deaf Dogs, Rescued in America, Pit Bulls & Pit Bull Type Dogs, and Puppy Mill Survivors - with the ultimate goal of raising awareness and encouraging prospective guardians to adopt.

I was lucky enough to snag an early copy of Shelter Dogs in a Photo Booth in ebook form, but I plan on buying a finished copy for my shelves (and maybe one for my mom, too!). The photos are all that and a bag of chips, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit HSU (where Shuster works as the social media coordinator) and Best Friends Animal Society.

In the parlance of We Rate Dogs, 1155/1050 chill AF would pet vigorously.***

* I won't sugarcoat these killings by categorizing them as "euthanasia" - unless done in the animal's best interest, e.g., if she is physically ill and beyond help, these are not mercy killings, but murder.

** Statistics via the ASPCA.

*** That's 11/10 points per dog, fyi.

The pictures in this book were absolutely adorable! So many sweet puppy faces staring back at me! My only complaint (and the reason why I'm giving this a three) is the writing. Obviously, a book like this is read mostly for the pictures (I mean, that's why I picked it up, too), but the writing felt so redundant. "This is Rover. This 7-month old good boy was turned in to the animal shelter because [reason]*. Rover likes to [activities]** and all he needed was to find his forever home, and he found just that!"***

*Didn't get along with other pets, too energetic, owner got sick, moved, "couldn't take care of him," etc.
**Play ball, go for walks, eat snacks, cuddle, get belly rubs, etc.
***Every single entry had some variation of "He just needed a forever home and got just that!" or "All Rover needed was a loving family and he found it" or "This sweetie-pie pup was looking for his new best friend and found him," etc. And while it's true and it's sweet, it felt really redundant after having read like 10 of these entries in a row.

Lots of super cute pictures and little stories about the dog's pasts and adoptions. The only problem is that there are quite a few spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that should be fixed.
