As with most anthologies the offerings are uneven. Some stories are five-star, delectable writing. KJ Parker’s offering, for example, is outstanding. It is worth the entire price of the book. There are a few other pieces that are nearly as good.
Yes, the Pope Joan story is fully stupid, but I’ll overlook it because Parker’s is so good.
All in all this has been one of my favourite anthologies in a good long time.
