The God Who Helps: A Memoir of Suffering and Hope

Rate this book
How can a loving God allow so much suffering?

It's an ancient question, and one that we all come face-to-face with at some point. What is God doing in the midst of our suffering? And if he has the power to make it stop, why doesn't he?

Pastor Drew Stevenson grappled with these questions during the sickness of his newborn son and in the aftermath of his mother's shocking car accident. He turned to the story of Lazarus, where he encountered a Savior who weeps with the hurting, even while holding the power to remove their pain. In this book, Drew unpacks the mysterious story of Lazarus, all while sharing his own powerful testimony of suffering with hope.

This isn’t a book about the theology of suffering; it’s one about the Jesus who is there with me in the suffering. And it’s got great theology too.
I was wrecked while reading it, but I’m so thankful for the brutal, beautiful reminder of God’s sovereign goodness and our heavenly hope.

I finished this book in one sitting. Reading this book feels like sitting across from Drew at a coffee shop for a heart-wrenching, but “brutiful” glimpse into his story of God’s faithfulness through the agony of losing his son Jude and his mom’s accident. Pull up a chair, you’re going to want to stay for the ending.

“What if God is not looking for you to just “get over it?” What if your present grief can be a testimony? We can testify to a watching world and to eachother that even though we can’t grasp why Jesus does what he does, we still trust him. What if the only consistent light we will be able to find in this dark world is Jesus himself? The darkness draws us to him because he has the words of eternal life.

I have been close enough to death to see it, taste it, hate it, and wish it was banished forever. But I have also seen Jesus enough to know that he is greater. Not even this great enemy of our stands a chance”

This book is a poignant word drawing readers to the feet of Jesus. Drew shares with heartbreaking clarity moments of his walk through trials in parallel with the story of Lazarus. It is raw, it is real, and it is pointing us to Jesus with scripture and lived experience. I will read this again and again.

“After death comes the harvest of hope. This is the greatest story of all time: the story of the gospel. Death is part of every gospel story, but it is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of a new story.

Was excited for this one. Drew’s reflections on grief and hope were so encouraging. So special to read this book after following the Stevensons’ story from afar.
