The Creatures of Island Street

Rate this book
Do not listen for the knock. Listen for the silence before it.

Every night, when the last window at 158 Island Street goes dark, the fog comes off the river wrong. It moves against the wind.

Nadine hears them first because she always does. Not barks. Sentences. Clear English cut straight into her skull.

Max is already at the door, hackles up. Otis is pressed to her leg, shaking.

Three floors down, the white van with no windows rolls past slow. WILDLIFE REMOVAL. Marlowe Vick is counting windows.

And between the pilings at First Bridge, tall and thin and gray as silt, the Hollow unfold. No eyes. No sound. Only cold that cuts through coat and skin.

Tonight, Sienna's X is the only thing holding the line.

Turn the page. Do not look away. Do not break the circle.

The Creatures of Island Street is not your typical creature novel. It's a found-family fantasy about a perfectly kept, gently haunted apartment building at 158 Island Street that becomes the last safe place in the valley.

Nadine Croteau has created something rare: a book that is both warm and bone-chilling. As the only animal whisperer who hears dogs, squirrels, foxes, and the ancient Snow-Fangs as clear English, Nadine must translate for everyone she loves while something tall, thin, and cold learns their names in the dark.

You will fall in love with Max and Otis, with Sunnie and Bowie, with Hutch who salts the steps before dawn, and with Queenie and Sienna who have never marked safe ground for humans before. You will fear the Hollow, who do not speak because they are the place where words were taken and never returned, and the white van marked WILDLIFE REMOVAL that rolls past too slow.

The magic is in the rituals that hold: yellow twine on the ankle, salt under the door, paint on the rail, and an X scratched deep with one claw. Do not look away. Do not break the circle.

My first novel ever, and my heart is on every page of Island Street. If you love dogs who are heroes, neighbors who become family, a landlord who is actually good, ancient white Snow-Fangs under a bridge, and a fog that comes in wrong, this is for you. It's scary, but it's cozy-scary — the kind where soup is on, doors are open, and we keep the X. Book 1 of 3. Welcome to 158. Where things are weird and unexplainable
