Full review when I'm at the laptop tomorrow.

Right, so this book. Lordy it's a hard one for the heart to take because of the subject matter - sensitively handled by RJ as has the whole series, but Daniel, oh Daniel is a special case. His was perhaps the most harsh of all the betrayals when he was taken to the Five Bar Ranch but he's fought back to get some semblance of a life.

For the most part, he's managing as well, but things come crashing around him when he's thrown back into his traumatic past after a young man contacts him seeking answers about the uncle whose just died in a plane crash alongside the man's parents.

This was a clever narrative, both men are hurting, Daniel is doing his absolute best to get control of his life but Corey's life has just spiralled out through no doing of his own and the contrast in the pair is well done.

It's not an easy read because it covers a truly sensitive topic and, if you've not read Texas Fall then you will be missing some background. It's not enough to make this book unreadable though, it can work as a standalone because all the information is there.

I'm not going to go into much more detail, but Daniel and Corey's slow relationship development, friendship, and then more, plays out perfectly. Nothing is rushed, there are conversations and honest feelings, nothing is left unspoken and, while angsty, this is not miscommunication or drama for plot's sake.

It's healing and learning how to move on, again there's no magic dick here. Daniel will never be "cured" but he can live with his new future alongside Corey.

I went blind when I read Daniel, because I haven't read the earlier books before (blame me),. This is actually the continuation of the previous events about what happened in the past. I was glad that I have read the spoilers in this book before I dive to another two. To know that Daniel and the other guys are now okay and happy is the most important.

Daniel had a very dark past when he's only fourteen, it's good that the author was kind enough not to give the detail on page. That's important. I just can't stand .

Corey met Daniel in a not very good situation, and they had to hold their attraction to each other before they solved what happened in the past. Both need a closure.
I liked how RJ didn't rush their relationship, it was a slow burn, the romance and sexy time was on the right time. I loved the chemistry between Corey and Daniel, they're bond by the past, cope with it, and worked hard to find their happy ending. Both did the adjustment in mature way, I might say.
Now I need to dive to the previous books, I hope nothing's too hard for my weak heart.

Recommended!

The last of the boys abused at the Bar Five Ranch, Daniel is finishing his final year of college when he’s approached by Jack Campbell-Hayes and a young man named Corey Dryden. Corey has recently lost his parents in a plane crash and discovered information his father obtained that implicated Corey’s uncle as one of the boys’ abusers at the ranch. Thinking only to protect his young sisters from finding out about their uncle, Corey doesn’t realize how the information spins Daniel’s well-ordered world.

Months later, after working a post graduate job that didn’t pan out, Daniel finally succumbs to the lure of the Legacy Ranch—the ranch where the others who escaped the Bar Five now work and/or support in some way. Thinking only to stay for one day, Daniel discovers his place there, and when a chance visit from Corey shows Daniel that they might have a mutual spark of interest, the groundwork is laid for a future relationship.

That’s a very simplified summary of the story but there’s a lot of detail about Corey’s family and how he came to find his father’s investigation into his uncle’s behavior. There’s also a lot of background on Daniel, how he was caught, how he was abused, a bit about his rescue and a lot about his adjustment to living in today’s world.

The main story took place over the course of nearly a year and the epilogue is three years later, allowing plenty of time for relationship development. However, the two men never quite gelled for me. Corey came across as very young, immature, acting impulsively on the next thing on his emotional “to do” list, making decisions without guidance. And he never really aged or mellowed, in my opinion. I also found his life situation unrealistic, somewhat trite—older brother now stuck with responsibility for younger sisters—and the business angle was odd. Everything from Corey assuming a controlling position in a well-established financial agency to the other partners and the board’s decision to disassociate with Corey’s father’s last name to Corey selling his shares and encouraging his sisters to do so felt rushed and unrealistic. If it were to happen in a real world, I highly doubt the process would take place so quickly or so simply.

Daniel seemed to remain aloof through most of the story. Granted, he should be aloof after what happened to him, but even with Corey, I didn’t feel their togetherness, their “oneness” so I couldn’t get into rooting for them to overcome the odds. In short, I found the romance lacking.

Overall, it’s a nice story, but short on depth and detail. If you’ve read the rest of the series, you should definitely pick this up, but it’s not the caliber of the first few books in the series in my opinion and definitely shouldn’t be read as a standalone since so many previous characters are involved.

A heartwrenching but wonderful story.

The three books in the Legacy series are all wonderful stories. I guess it's possible to read them as standalones but I don't recommend it. Of the three books, Daniel touched my emotions the most and parts of it were also the most difficult to read.

Reading Daniel's story broke my heart but healed it again by the end. There are no graphic details of what he endured but none are needed. RJ Scott is able to convey all of the pain and horror without that. We also learn how strong Daniel is to have overcome everything that happened to him when he was a young teen.

Corey, Daniel's love interest in this book, also has a heartbreaking story. His parents died in a plane crash leaving him and his three sisters to carry on without them. While going through his father's things he finds disturbing information that will change his life forever.

The circumstances that bring Daniel and Corey together are horrifying but as the story unfolds these two begin to be friends and then so much more.

In true RJ Scott fashion, I had tears flowing while I read this story about family, extreme adversity and how it is overcome by the characters she has created. For fans of the Texas series they will welcome the fact that we see both Jack and Riley in this book as well as other characters from that series and the earlier two Legacy stories.

Daniel is a fitting wrap up for the Legacy series and I highly recommend it as well as the first two books.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

The Texas world created by RJ Scott has long been one of my favorites. The Legacy series/spin offs have not been an exception.

Right from the first book, you know you're in for a bumpy ride and Ms. Scott delivers! This third in the series is Daniel's story and it will make you cry (just fair warning!).

This is not only Daniel's story, but Corey's story as well. Right from the first page, I was gripped and enthralled by this story. I loved Corey's strength and compassion in dealing with his circumstances (and three younger sisters!). Daniel's "origin story" will break your heart, but his inner strength and refusal to be broken was inspiring.

If you've read any of my reviews, you know I don't do spoilers, or rehash the entire book. This is a story of surviving a horrific situation for Daniel, surviving a life-altering event for Corey and the girls, but most of all it's a story of strength and courage to reach out and allowing someone to help when you need it most.

Having some time with Jack, Riley, Kyle, Gabriel was wonderful too... yep, I'm a fan!

So, stock up on your softest tissues, you're going to need them, but grab this book!

This third book in the series tells Daniel’s story, and in doing so brings the series full circle while bringing closure to the shared history of the boys—now men—that were affected so profoundly by what happened to them when they younger.

Daniel is a pretty amazing person, struggling to come back from his past abuse to work so hard to get his education and make something of himself. His strength shows with how he gets himself through every day in a world where he is never sure he can trust anyone. His attitude can be brash and defensive at times, a product of his history.

Corey was leading a pretty normal, happy life until his parents died and everything began to fall apart. As information comes to light that might tarnish his family, he goes through a lot emotionally in his desperation to make things right while keeping his family protected from the past possibly coming back to haunt them.

Corey and Daniel don’t get off to a great start, and at first it seems that they’d be an unlikely matchup. In his need to try and make reparation for things that happened in the past (though they were not his own fault), he repeatedly makes things worse instead…much to his continued distress. The road for these two is slow, but eventually things do become more comfortable between them as they develop a bond.

The drama of the story comes from bringing up the events of the past as the information Corey discovers begins to come out. It brings all the guys together—Kyle, Gabriel, Liam and Daniel—as they find out the final pieces to what happened all those years ago, and deal with that knowledge. As I said, it brings everything full circle and completes their stories.

I thought this was a great story to conclude the series, and it was a 4.5-star read for me. There is mention of some of the disturbing events of the past and Daniel’s abuse, and that along with the adult language and some sexual content make this book one for readers 18+.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the third book in the series - and after the first ten pages I could only ever have awarded it five stars. It is not often that worry, sadness and dread for a person can be conveyed in such a short few pages. It sets up the rest of the book, even if loyal readers already know exactly what happened, it is no less moving.

We then skip forward to the present day, but never do the events of those first few pages leave one's mind - and although relieved that Daniel is alive, and seemingly healthy, it will all come back to affect us again. The description of how Daniel copes with daily life, from the fear of even taking a sip of water is humbling, and was a salutary reminder no one should judge someone before walking in their shoes.

I am loathed to reveal any more because it will be all the richer if you read it directly. But rest assured this is both a moving, intense and very uplifting story, as well as being a beautifully romantic read. Corey is a man with a strong moral code, living the legacy of his parents, and doing the best he can in a difficult situation. He too finds the support he needs from the Legacy family, and deserves happiness too.

Thank you R.J. Scott for a riveting, emotional and hopefully story; you did Daniel justice.

I have to say that as good as it is, I found this series incredibly hard to read. I very nearly didn't bother with this one, however I'm so glad that I did. I was expecting angst and what I got was hope. Poor Daniel, my heart bled for him, so cautious and vulnerable. Corey too, Daniel's love interest, doesn't know what to believe or who to trust. He and Daniel have what appears to be insurmountable problems to deal with, but find that together they're so much stronger. In this book all of the 'lost' boys face once again what happened to them, I enjoyed the dynamic between them, their bond was unmistakable, and the way in which they looked out for one another was palpable. Corey was perfect for Daniel, their relationship grew slowly and, considering what they'd been through, this made perfect sense. It's an honest story about hope, forgiveness and, ultimately, moving on and starting anew. Excellent end to the series.

**** R.J. Scott gives us a deep, intense and hard fought tale of a complicated circumstance.
I hated the things that happened to Daniel. (Yes, triggers of child abuse)
I felt for Corey, his parents dying and he had to finish raising his sisters. He got the business, but also a huge, horrible secret that he discovered involving his Uncle.

There is investigations and terrible discoveries. The men find happiness later on. The kids are wonderful. Nice to see so many of the previous characters.

This is to be a wrap up of the series. Wonderfully written.
ENJOY !

Wow! This book is fabulous. Daniel’s story is heartbreaking, at times almost impossible to read, but also filled with love and hope and impossible to put down once you start reading. What is more, Daniel is also the perfect ending to what has been a very emotional and unforgettable reading experience. Legacy Ranch and those who’ve made their home their will remain a part of me for a very, very long time.

Good storytelling from RJS but this one felt a lot like "love cures all" and it was just a bit too easy. For all the trauma and coping mechanisms that Daniel employed that really didn't work all that well if he was outside of his routine and comfort zone this felt rushed and incomplete.

Not just Daniel falling for Cory but Daniel overcoming his issues. I get that the romance wasn't even started until well after the 60% mark but this book should have been at least twice as long (maybe 3 times as long) to give Daniel all the space he needed to live on the pages fully.

I would have liked to see more about Daniel's eating fears and why he didn't have a phone and seemed to fear technology and yet knew how to code? How did Daniel end up in foster care. What was in the letters to Cory and his sisters from his parents? The side story of the parents plane crash had me scratching my head. There were just a lot of loose ends and dangling teases that get swept aside for love to overcome very quickly, all Daniel's neurosis.

I needed (and so did Daniel) to get to know more about Daniel settling into the ranch outside of his relationship with Cory.

Daniel Brown has struggled to leave his old life behind; his fears and horrific memories are still very much a part of his life. He’s looked at as strange but with the help of a scholarship from an unknown source, he’s done well for himself in college.

With the puzzling death of his parents, Corey Dryden has become the man of the house, caring for his three younger sisters. He’s thrown into his father’s business and comes across his journals, some that give Corey good memories, but those memories are taken away when he finds an envelope that holds disturbing and horrific information.

When Private Investigator John McMillan calls for a meeting, Corey finds himself facing Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes, and once again Corey’s life is turned upside down. With Jack’s help Corey meets Daniel, and they both find that life once again will take them down different paths.

Now I know why I’m hooked on RJ Scott’s novels. She’s just so talented at bringing many different emotions to each and every one of her characters; it’s just impossible to pick a favorite—friendship, love, romance, guilt, the struggle to make decisions, it just goes on. Daniel’s story is very difficult to read at times, because his trust was stolen and his life destroyed at a very young age. There’s a distinct contrast between Daniel and Corey with the issues that they have to face. They’re two young men whose lives spiraled out of control, but then a gradual rebuilding takes over, with understanding, love and the strength to go on.

The author also brings us back in touch with Jack and Riley (from the Texas series), with tidbits of where life has taken them. The most important thing that’s brought to the forefront, though, is love, friends and family—not just the one you’re born into but the family you make. And always having a place to call home. I’ve been following the Texas series since it first started in 2013 with The Heart of Texas, so I did a re-read of Texas Fall, the sixth book, to refamiliarize myself with Kyle, Gabriel, and Daniel’s situation. Then I followed up with a binge re-read of the entire Legacy Ranch series. I found myself wanting to pick a favorite out of the three books, but it just wasn’t fair because the guys and their significant others all had something special that they brought to this amazing series.

I started this book with my expectations very high. This was because I know what a fantastic story teller Rj is and I have waited anxiously for this book to come out. All the emotions I experienced while reading this..fear, extreme sadness, intense anger, tears clouding my eyes to the point I had to stop so I could wipe the tears and continue on, a budding hope that Daniel would find his way and find someone who would be his rock, protector and love of his life.
We get to meet Corey and his three sisters, all who play an important part in this book. We also get to "see" all of our favorite guys and their loves from the previous books. We get to hear a little bit about how they are doing.
Rj has a way, as I have said in previous book reviews, of making you "see" what it happening and feeling some of the emotions that the characters are experiencing. She is able to weave a story that grabs a hold of me, makes me want to physically hurt the evil in the book, no matter the form they take and grab onto the main characters and hug them until whatever bad they are dealing with, goes away.
The power of kindness, understanding and love, both familial and romantic is always strong in her work.
Daniel and Corey are fantastic for each other in every way. The family that supports and encourages them including Corey's sisters and the men that had to deal with what Daniel did and the men lucky enough to be loved and love them was wonderful to be part of.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Both to those who follow them and love their stories as much as I do and those new to Rj's work.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

The relationship between Corey and Daniel is as uncomfortable as it is moving. Ugly secrets come to light when Corey begins to look into the deaths of three family members. The only person who can give him the full truth is Daniel, a man who has no desire to revisit the horrors of his childhood.

The initial interactions between Daniel and Corey are painfully awkward. Corey is tormented by guilt and shame. Daniel is fighting to deal with his past while struggling to manage his present. The relationship that tentatively builds between them has to bridge the men’s very separate life experiences. Corey’s first attempts to reach out to Daniel are painfully clumsy and I enjoyed the careful scrutiny of Corey’s privilege and good intentions. But his privilege is balanced by his grief and the responsibilities he has to assume after his parents’ death. I loved the slow, gentle and reflective connection that builds between Corey and Daniel and I love the sense of belonging Daniel finds in the ranch.

This is probably the most difficult of the Legacy Ranch books. In an attempt to understand his family better, Corey digs deep into the abuse experienced by the young men. As a result, the horrors experienced by Daniel and the others feel closer and more graphic here than in the earlier books. As always, the author’s approach is sensitive rather than sensational but the book explores dark issues and needs to be accompanied by trigger warnings.

The third Legacy book follows the same themes as the first and second, but the focus on many of the abused characters from the earlier books becomes more potentially damaging, more personal, more painful. Many of the young men involved are facing more than the standard stages of grief, far closer to post-traumatic stress disorder, for they are—no matter how emotionally destroyed—still alive with daily and dreaming reminders of their abusers.

The book begins with Daniel as a college student attempting to heal while hiding from personal relationships. Jack and his husband Riley own Double D Ranch, where the Legacy Compound is located. Jack is a minor character in all the books providing a human connection to the series. To a number of continuing characters, readers add an additional character, Corey, who along with his three sisters, has recently lost their parents in a possible plane crash. The mysteries grow.

While all three novels deal with the horrifying emotions associated with sexual abuse, all are quite readable. There is, however, little humor in the texts. This third book ties together loose ends while providing a realistic look at the emotions created by molestation. This is not a series for those looking for kink. If anything, the final book teaches a greater understanding of the potential damage of romanticizing such concepts.

R. J. Scott’s Legacy series is worth the reading time.

Daniel was kidnapped and then led into a tortured life where men used him as a sex toy in the most terrible ways. What we don’t really expect is for Daniel’s life to cross paths with the people in the Campbell-Hayes family.
When Corey’s parents are killed in a tragic mountain plane crash, he is forced into the role of heading his father’s business as well as parenting his three younger sisters. As Corey searches for the reason his father’s plane fell out of the sky, killing both of his parents and his uncle he stumbles on a horrible family truth that he never expected.
Jack Campbell-Hayes encourages Daniel to take advantage of Legacy Ranch in order to begin to heal his life and soul. It’s there that Corey and Daniel meet.
Both Corey and Daniel are facing issues they may not want to look too deeply into but when they do it first pulls them apart and then pulls them together.
Another fabulous RJ Scott book that the reader will become personally involved with the characters and the story. Beautifully written.

4 1/2 out of 5 stars

This is by far the best book of the series. I think Daniel’s story was heart wrenching from page one and Corey’s wasn’t any easier. Reading this one hurt my heart, but they healed it in the end.

Daniel has taken himself away from his life at the Bar Five ranch and the abuse he had suffered, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t all still live in his head. Corey’s parents were killed in a plane crash on their way to Denver with his Uncle. Their stories may not seem connected, but once the connections were made, life changed drastically for both guys.

I enjoyed the pace of this story and how patient both Daniel and Corey became. I think the characters were likable and real. Their journeys were full of split paths and hills, but they came through. Corey’s sisters played a big role in the story and I enjoyed that as well. I think this series was wrapped up well with this story and I feel like all three guys from the Bar Five found their happy in the end.

Daniel, a wonderful continuation of the Legacy Ranch series by RJ Scott, is an absolute page-turner.

The story is set in RJ's created world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch. As a huge fan of these characters, I love reading more about them and their ranches.

Daniel's story is heart-wrenching and terrifying. I had to keep reminding myself that I was reading fiction. Daniel's past had effected every moment of his life, as he lives in constant fear, has panic attacks, and isolates himself as much as possible.

Corey's story is tragic, as well, as his parents have died, he is now in charge of his sisters, and he's on a mission to discover the truth about his parent's death.

I could not put this book down, hoping to see Daniel find some healing and waiting for Corey to finally be able to talk clearly to Daniel and find out the truth.

Overall, Daniel is a fantastic read. I highly recommend you read this, along with the rest of RJ Scott's Texas and Legacy books. You will not be disappointed.

Daniel was rescued from the Bar Five ranch. His horrific past haunts him. Barely functioning he manages to go to college. Nightmares color his existence. Confronted by a stranger he decides that he needs to go to Legacy ranch to find some peace and possibly answers. Just for one day but winds up staying.

Cory lost his parents and uncle in a plane crash. After he comes across papers that show his uncle was a perverted monster, he finds Daniel to ask him questions. It doesn't go well for either man. Cory is left with more questions and Daniel is swamped with memories he can't bury.

Both men come to Legacy to get answers and try to move on. Though neither realized it, the answer they need just might be each other.

This was the most compelling book of the series to me. Both men connected by the same abuse, just in different ways. A heartbreaking book to read, but ultimately beautiful too.

Having been rescued from a horrible past, Daniel is trying to live his life. He works hard at keeping his memories at bay. When Cory enters his life with disturbing questions Daniel is lost in those memories.
This is an emotional story about healing and love.

Daniel (Chandler) Brown is the last of the boys hurt at the Bar Five Ranch and probably the most damaged. He's finishing a college degree on full scholarship. He's hurting bad and has walled himself away from close human contact.
Corey Dryden is the oldest child of the recently deceased Edward and Emily Dryden. He's hurting and floundering trying to run his father's company (that he never wanted a part of) and taking care of his 3 sisters. Corey comes across some information in his father's locked cabinet that throws him for a loop, makes him temporarily doubt his father. Corey goes to find Daniel and starts the opening and ultimately the healing of old wounds.
Daniel trays to fight Corey's help and his attraction to Corey but it's a losing battle. Liam, Kyle and Gabriel all help in Daniel's healing. Jack and Riley make appearances as well. Legacy Ranch is a big part of everyone's healing, even Corey's sisters Amy, Chloe and Sophie.
This was a beautifully written book that hits on all the feels. I was sad, angry, happy and bawling in chapter 15. You can feel the chemistry between all the characters. There's nothing stilted or feels forced. Daniel and Corey has a very slow, almost innocent courtship. There's not a lot of romance or sex but for this book it isn't needed. Daniel needs everything to progress slowly to feel safe and it's the perfect amount of slow. The only thing I wished is for it to be longer. I wasn't ready for it to end. I definitely recommend this book. Have some Kleenex handy.

Oh the emotional journey with this Legacy Ranch group and wow does Daniel round it out! This story made me feel so much! Daniel and Corey both have so much to deal with – it’s powerful, emotional and filled with hope so have some tissues ready!

Daniel is trying to live a normal life, trying to escape the pain and horror of his past. He knows people think he’s weird but he’s still trying. Corey’s life changed dramatically when his parents and uncle unexpectedly died, now he’s in charge of the business and his three younger sisters. Going through his father’s old journals opens a crack, exposes something so painful Corey knows he needs to hide it from his sisters but he also feels he needs to try to right some of the wrongs. And that is how Daniel comes into his life.

For me, a lot of this story was more about the healing journey than the romance and it worked for me. The lives of both of these men have spiraled a bit, and it takes time to recover from that. Aside from their individual issues, there are issues between Daniel and Corey, the connection they share and the questions of being able to separate it all and RJ Scott does a great job of bringing these two together. They find friendship together and it leads to more and it just made my heart so happy! This book and this series, while not always easy on the heart, are so full of love and hope. I love how this group becomes a family, the stories going beyond just finding romantic love, but also the love of a family.

This Texas spin off series took me on an incredibly emotional journey, and I loved every second of it. These stories were heartbreaking and uplifting. Daniel's story, not as high angst as the others in the series, along with Corey's, was a beautiful end to the series. It was sad, yet sweet and endearing. I was a complete mush at the end of this book with many happy tears.

Oh, my heart. This book wrecked me in all the best ways a book can. Both Daniel and Corey are wonderful characters, and they make a wonderful couple. They have managed to make things work in a complicated situation, and seeing them manage made the book all the more enjoyable.
