BoardSource's all-time bestseller, this book not only explores the board's 10 core responsibilities, it also puts them into the context of the governance challenges facing nonprofits today. The book clarifies and distinguishes the board's responsibilities from those of the chief executive and senior staff. In addition, it includes two appendixes, one covering the individual responsibilities of board members and the other providing a sample self-assessment for individual board members. This new, updated edition includes a deeper discussion of the role that advocacy plays in the responsibilities of nonprofit boards.
Good overview book, but you really need the full set to be engaged with the material. BUT I know which books I need to get from the rest of the series now.
A quick and reasonably easy read. I read it for a class on charitable planning and, as one who has worked more with donors than with boards, there were some useful takeaways for me. If/when I find myself serving on a board someday I have no doubt I will pull out the book again for a deeper dive into some of the topics
