Johannes, Jan or Johan Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque painter who specialized in exquisite, domestic interior scenes of middle class life. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He seems never to have been particularly wealthy, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death.

Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, using bright colours, sometimes expensive pigments, with a preference for cornflower blue and yellow. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.

After having been forgotten, but not by some connoisseurs, Vermeer was rediscovered by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Thoré Bürger, who published an essay attributing sixty-six pictures to him, (although only thirty-five paintings are firmly attributed to him today). Since that time Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.

The Girl With The Pearl Earring is a very interesting story about a young sixteen year old girl, Griet, who gets recruited to work as a maid for a Dutch painter, Vermeer's home. She is very hesitant to take the job because she did not want to leave her own home and family. Especially because her younger sister did not want her to leave. After she thought it through she decided to take it because she knew it would benefit her family. She would have to live at this house all week and she was only allowed to visit home on weekends. This book was very enticing to read and it kept making me want to read more. As the story progresses she finds out that her younger sister becomes sick and dies due to an outbreak of Plague in her home neighborhood. This must have been so difficult for Griet considering she was her only sister. You could also tell in the story that Griet felt guilty in a way for her sister's death because she couldn’t be there for her since she was busy at her new job. This must have been heartbreaking for Griet and her family but she didn’t have a choice but to keep working. During her work she is also required to take care of Vermeer’s studio and soon becomes his assistant. They both have an attraction for each other and people start pressuring Vermeer to paint a portrait of Griet. As this portrait progresses Vermeer discovers that it needs something more like a jewelry piece. He concludes it needs a pearl earring in which his wife had. Overall this story had me hooked from chapter one and it was very surprising and intriguing. The plot had me stunned and I always wanted to read more. I loved this novel and it was very well written in my opinion.

Tracy Chevalier is one of the first few historical fiction writers I stumbled upon. Of course, I heard of the film first. I didn’t have the time to watch it, then found out there was a book, and, predictably, I felt left out of all the brouhaha, so I bought it. Hihi. High art has always been a little intimidating for me. Even though I’m friends with many artists (and have a cousin who made it big in the field), I still don’t fully “get” the pure creative types—the ones who draw and paint in the Classical tradition. 🎨
This book gave me an inside look into the mind of one such artist (Johannes Vermeer). And I realized: artists are just as human as I am. The art I practice in writing has deep similarities to the art they practice on canvas, just different mediums.

The writing was delightfully good… nice pace. I thought the husband would sleep with the maid happy it didn’t end that way (cliche) instead the husband left the pearls for the maid. Which makes sense because the wife would never wear them again the wife also knew he was deeply in love and fascinated by her. That’s what it was! And the husband never painted his own wife. I didn’t want it to end… or I wanted a better ending. The ending was terrible but I wish she told Pieter the son what happens… I wish she just told the truth. She was a maid she couldn’t afford to tell the truth.

Shockingly bad book, I've realised that I can't read anything by Tracy Chevalier as they are all so dull. I love historical fiction and I know I'm bucking the trend here but I can't see what the fuss is all about with this one. NOTHING, yes NOTHING HAPPENS in this book. Others has mentioned the sexual tension, but he isn't even interested in her and in the end there just isn't enough to make a story. I've tried her other books but sadly not impressed with her writing style.

I had a great time reading the book, the only annoying part was that they had a plague & I was trying to avoid that kind of topic because of Covid-19.
but apart from that, it was a really good book and I really enjoyed it.

Very engaging book. The story progressed with increased sexual tension between Greit and her master. The ending deserved so much more. Ending was a bust. I reread about 40 pages to make sure I didn't miss something. Still worth the read.....

My synopsis: The book is based on the famous oil painting by Johannes Vermeer in 1665. In the Netherlands, a poor young girl Griet goes to live with Vermeer’s growing family to work as a maid. Part of her role is to dust Vermeer’s room where he paints his various portraits without moving anything to disturb his painting process. She begins to offer subtle suggestions of how to improve his paintings, and then becomes his muse in secret.

My review: The writing itself was good as it was very descriptive which I look for in a book. However, the story for me lacked drama or connection with the characters other than the main character Griet. I wasn’t as eager to pick up the book as I was with another historical fiction that I’ve read since reading this. In the story (spoiler) her sister’s death just felt sudden and forgotten about, considering she was close with her.
