Romance novelist, Clarice Adler, has lost the inspiration to write ever since dumping her cheating boyfriend. How do you dream up a plot of two people falling in love, when you’ve stopped believing in love yourself? But her deadline is looming, and her career hangs in the balance, so she decides to lock herself away on the secluded Scottish Isle of Skye to finish her manuscript. Upon meeting Derek McMillan there, it seems she’s found her new muse and the words start to flow out of her as if by magic. Clarice falls for him, hard, despite knowing nothing about the man, except that he’s unavailable.
Derek McMillan has been managing his farm and renting out a few holiday cottages on his own for years now. He deals with the occasional tourist for some extra money, but mostly keeps to himself. When he first lays eyes on the curvy beauty, Clarice, he immediately regrets accepting her booking. Lightning strikes, and as much as he tries to deny it, his inner bear knows that she’s his mate. But he’s a shifter, and she’s a human, and the two can’t ever mix, can they?
In this steamy paranormal romance novella, follow along as an impossible love blossoms between two people, who couldn’t be more different. One might say fate intended for them to meet, if you believe in that sort of thing, but they’re both set on fighting their attraction with everything they’ve got. They’re going to need another push to admit to themselves as well as each other what’s going on…

Purch Amazon Oct 21, 2018 An Unexpected Affair by Lorelei Moone Genres; Dangit! 2 books in a row that are in the genre of 'Watching Paint Dry'! 0 Stars
Very oddly worded sentences. So slow moving, I'd rather stand in front of my freezer and watch ice melt. That would have more action than this story. Enormous amount of unnecessary and BORING information. Ninety percent of this story she has been in her cabin working on writing a book. NOTHING has happened. When there finally is a little bit of action, it's so not hot, nor steamy, nor anything, I thought for a minute it was young adult. Who knows, maybe it is. But if I gave my daughter this book to read, she would laugh her butt off and throw it back at me.
An Unexpected Affair is book one in the Scottish Werebear series by Lorelei Moone.
This is more of a novella than a book. It’s very quick and short which means we have no time to develop the world and characters.
Derek is adorable. I liked him. He’s a solitary werebear though he does have a brother.
Clarice I could take or leave her. She’s a romance writer. There is nothing notable about her.
The first half is slow. The main couple Derek and Clarice barely have any interaction between themselves in the first part, then all of a sudden, BAM, the author has them in love. From their things move fast.
I didn’t like that we have no getting to know each other. No time together. Nothing! The romance needed a stronger foundation then the quick insta-love.
I did like that Derek became her muse for the book she was writing.
An Unexpected Affair was eh! Not sure if I’ll read on or not. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.
Romance writer, Clarice Adler needs to bunker down and finish her book or she will be without a publisher. What better way to get away from her cheating ex, then by traveling to the Scottish Isle and staying in a quiet little cabin. There she meets Derek McMillan who is hero worthy. Clarice is led to believe that Derek has a wife, who she has never seen and believes he has kept his distance because of it.
Derek realizes Clarice is his mate, but he is a bear shifter and no humans are aware they exist it is a closely kept secret. Although the more time Clarice spends on his land, the stronger he connection even though Derek continues to stay away. Is there a chance that Clarice could accept him though and keep his secret?
I listened to the audiobook of An Unexpected Affair. Narrated by Patrick Blackthorne. I enjoyed this story, liked that even though they were mates Derek was willing to let Clarice go because of the secrecy with his kind. I thought the narration was soothing and was completely entertained with the story.
I got the whole series on audio in exchange for review. The crazy person that I am I didn't read the blurb or any details about the series, just that it was a bear shifter series! ( What's better than that?!)
So I started listening to this audiobook assuming the whole 16 hours are going to be about the same couple but in 6 different books. Imagine my surprise when after listening for a couple of hours, they got mated and BAM their story was over and it was off to the next story with hero's brother as the the next hero.
It was a good novella but there were 2 problems. First I went to thinking it'd be much longer (which was not a big deal). The second there was no romance, just the fated mate urges and that sort of attraction and immediately after falling into bed they got mated and it was over. They didn't even have proper conversation before falling into bed. I loved it up to the last chapter , the pace was good, we were getting to know the characters and then they had sex and it was over. Off to listen to the next one!
Clarice is a writer and she needs to finish her novel. She books a cabin to clear her mind of any distractions. At the cabin she meets Derek who is the caretaker of the property. Derek is also a werebear. Derek feels an attraction to Clarice but she is human and doesn't think it would be a good idea to pursue anything since she is human. As a werebear he has to keep that a secret from outsiders. Derek and Clarice do eventually get together but by the time it happens the book is pretty much over. They spent too much time apart and I didn't feel that connection between the couple. There was no romance. No getting to know the person. I normally enjoy shifter stories but this one didn't work for me at all. Maybe if it was a full length story and we had character development, getting to know each other and some romance I would have enjoyed this story better.
This is the first book in a new sexy shifter series and it definitely does not disappoint! A human woman named Clarice is a romance author who is suffering from writer's block after experiencing a failed relationship and goes to the Scottish Isle of Skye to lock herself away and finish her current work. What she doesn't expect is to come across the sexy bear shifter Derek who she's renting a cabin from and the immediate connection she feels towards him. Derek doesn't believe that humans and shifters can be mates so he fights the attraction he feels towards her with everything he has. They can only fight the inevitable for so long, but it's sure fun to watch the back and forth between the two. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of this series. This is the first book I've read by this author, but it definitely won't be the last! I highly recommend reading this to anyone!
*There may be spoilers in this review...you've been warned*
I found this to be an enjoyable story. As with most paranormal stories, the attraction was immediate but in this case, Clarice and Derek feel that attraction but they also avoid each other (for different reasons). Since I got both POVs, I knew what the other didn’t know, so I enjoyed the avoidance immensely. Especially when Derek kept dropping off food and goodies for Clarice and she thought it was his “wife”.
Even though I enjoyed the avoidance, I kept wondering how and when Derek and Clarice would finally get together. One of the things that I think helped develop their connection was that they were able to sense each other and later each other’s thoughts. I loved that Derek knew when Clarice was in an accident and rode to the rescue.
Romance writer rents secluded Scottish cottage for do-or-die writing sprint, meets Scottish were bear, sexiness ensues. Lovely, slow-burn romance with a romantic Scottish village setting. Loved the characters (Derek is a werebear who bakes!) and, particularly, the cottage. Fun read. Received ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I keep going back and forth. Scottish We're bear is not the worst book I have read. It's a love story, that's it. Books like this are not my favorite because it's so predictable and kind of on the boring side. The main character, Clarice, caught her bf cheating and she is trying to finish her book. So she goes to Scotland for escape. She meets Derek, a werebear, who feels lightning when he sees her. I see the appeal and I appreciate the author's style. Moone does a good job with the characters. I get their decisions easily without too much gunk. The plot is very basic and pretty fast paced. This is my first (and probably last) of this type of book so I'm not sure if the speed is genre based or just rushed. I wanted Moone to settle more into the background and the scenes (beyond the erotica). Fast read and pretty graphic near the end. I would not recommend to anyone around me unless they were until the sexy changing bodice rippers.
Let me just pre-face this by saying it was free. Never in 1 million years would I ever think to read a book about were-BEARS?
The concept behind the romance was pretty cute. Gave major Wattpad aesthetics and it was a quick read with only one real spicy scene.
Would I recommend you pay actual money for this book? No definitely not but if you’ve got a spare afternoon and Apple Books, I definitely say you should download the first three books for free.
ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL !!! Title: An Unexpected Affair Series: Scottish Werebear Designation: Book One, Standalone Novella, No Cliffhanger Author: Lorlei Moone Reading Platform: Kindle Edition My Rating: FIVE DELICIOUSLY SWEET STARS***** Wow! An Unexpected Affair is the fabulous debut novella by up and coming new paranormal author Lorlei Moone and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed. I would never have guessed that this was Moone's very first release. Although this release is the first book in Moone's Scottish Werebear Series, it is a standalone read and the couple do get their very sweet happy ending. No spoilers from me but I have a feeling that we'll see more of Clarice and Derek in the second book. The story is fast-paced but comfortable, well crafted and held my attention. The narrative is well written in the third person with alternating his and her points of view. The dialogue is smart, well executed and flows beautifully. The entire book is exceptionally well constructed, formatted and edited. It is always such a pleasure to read a book that is so well done. I found the characters to be very engaging and was able to connect with them immediately. Moone skillfully combines these elements into an exciting, relaxing, easy to follow paranormal tale filled with adventure, heartbreaking angst and a large helping of sweet romance. I loved everything about this story and would definitely recommend it to anyone that loves paranormal romance. I very much look forward to reading the second book in this series. Beautiful, curvaceous Clarice Adler is fighting the clock and losing the battle. She's trying to recover from a painful breakup with her cheating, now ex-boyfriend and seems to have lost her muse somewhere along the way. Her deadline is looming and she's under tremendous pressure from her editor. She's lost faith in the whole idea of love and the complete irony of the situation is Clarice is a romance novelist. It's actually her job to write about love but the words refuse to come. So, how does a romance novelist write about love when she's completely stopped believing in it herself? What's an author to do??? Well, she rents a cabin at the secluded Scottish Isle of Hope for her very own private writer's retreat, of course. And does she find her muse??? Oh yes, she finds it...um...him, all right, and a whole lot more than even she could ever have imagined....or ever be able to write about! Oh my! Bear shifter Derek McMillan has been running the family farm alone for several years and has accepted the fact that he'll probably never find a mate. His parents are deceased and his only brother is always traveling and very seldom around. Unlike wolf shifters, bears are solitary creatures and don't reside in packs. He does rent a few holiday cabins on his property to the occasional tourist for additional income but has never encountered any problems - until now. When his beautiful new tenant, Clarice Adler, shows up, his whole life changes in an instant. No matter how hard he tries to deny it, his bear instantly recognizes his mate but there's just one little problem. Well, maybe a few little problems. First, she's not a bear; she's human. Oh my! Second, he's not supposed to share his secret because according to their legends, humans used to hunt and kill shifters. Oh no! And third, bears and humans can't mate, can they??? We'll see! Beautiful, curvy romance novelist who fell out of love with love-check! Handsome bear shifter determined not to claim his human mate-check! A brother that lets the cat out of the bag or should I say bear-check! Danger, drama, a bad storm and a big secret-check! Heated attraction, sweet romance and a love that won't be denied-you bet! That and a whole lot more! Deliciously cute and delightfully entertaining!

Judging a Book by it's Cover: Bare torso with tribal tattoo, pants dipping dangerously low and a sort of wonky pectoral muscle. The bear in the background is super cute. Brooding, moody background colors help make them both stand out. The synopsis sounds rather fun and entertaining. Looking Deeper: Third person POV. Poor Derek, he's a bit clueless in what to do with himself in the beginning, but is such a softy sweetheart behind the gruff front he puts up. Clarice is a bit fanciful, but enjoyable. Both characters were absolutely wonderful. There really was not a lot in the way of secondary characters, allowing the main focus to remain on the lead couple. The chemistry, while progressing at a steadily aggressive rate, was something both denied until they just could not anymore, a refreshing change to other similar stories. Dialogue felt natural and appropriate. The plot was full and complete, for being a novella of this short length and it was written extremely well - so smooth and fluid. There really were not a lot of conflicts other than internal struggles, but they managed in efficient and mature ways. No predictability. The conclusion allows Derek and Clarice their HEA, but there's a nice big opening for A DANGEROUS BUSINESS to pick it right up at the end. Although not a *huge* fan of paranormal, I honestly would love to read the next book in this saga to see if my suspicions are correct. Thank you, Ms. Moone, for the opportunity to read your work.
This was a sweet story about an isolated bachelor and a romance author who is recovering from a breakup. She is renting a cabin on his farm in order to finish her latest book without distractions. They have an immediate connection, but don't act on it, which made me happy. This isn't the type of story where one of the characters has an important job to complete that ends up being ignored because the couple can't keep their hands off each other. Yeah!
So, why only three stars? Well, I did enjoy the story, which was smoothly written with sympathetic main characters. And I do want to read the sequel about Aidan, Derek's brother. It appears that his story runs somewhat parallel to this one. My main issue is that the character development, and the world building, are pretty basic. This is a novella/novelette, so some of that is to be expected. However, I'd have liked to have gotten to know Clarice and Derek a bit more deeply. As it was, the narrative was light, and tended to feel rather superficial.
Fortunately, the author managed to get communicate key elements of the story--the reasons for Derek keeping his distance, a bit about Clarice's back story (though I did wonder if she has a family), and some world building--simple and straightforward. So, I wasn't confused, just feeling like I only had part of the picture.
In the end, there was an opportunity to create action and suspense, which the author avoided and I appreciated. It wasn't necessary for this story, and looks to be important to the next. I received a free copy of this story for review, and look forward to reading the next installment in the series (which I'll likely buy).
Derick, the hero, is a reclusive werebear who rents cottages on his remote Scottish isle for extra income. Clarice, the heroine, is an author who has recently broken up with a cheating boyfriend. There's very little detail about what happened with the cheating boyfriend. We just know that he cheated and now Clarice is unable to finish a romance novel she's under contract to complete because she no longer believes in love. A friend convinces her to get away from it all and suggests this Scottish isle.
Derick is instantly attracted to Clarice, but avoids her because she's human and shifters are supposed to keep their existence a secret at all costs. Clarice is also instantly attracted to Derick, but she believes he's married and he encourages that belief. Still, she lusts after him and uses him as inspiration for her contracted novel.
There is no romance to this story. It's a "fated mate" type of story and they spend the majority of the story avoiding each other. Once they do come together, it's immediate sex and completion of the mating bond.
The story ends with Derick leaving Clarice after their mating ceremony to go help his brother, Aidan, with some trouble relating to Aidan's mate, which will be covered in story two. I will not continue.
Clarice acted like a big baby at times. She ASSumed Derek was married. He did not correct her but that was her fault, not his. He did Not "seem" like a baking type, so he just had to be married. There are male chefs, so, the misunderstanding was on her. Then, when she finds out that he is Not married, she over reacts, blames him and has a tear party crying all over herself. Over reaction much? Even if he did want to avoid her, so what? Like her inner dialogue said, she did not even know him.
?? Why are there so many books out there where the Female lead has so many Self Esteem issues ??
About halfway through the story, it picks up. I liked Derek, he Made the Story, especially when he baked cakes and left treats for Clarice. The end is a bit abrupt, its not a cliff hanger per say but Derek's brother, Aidan, does call him on Derek's mating day and asks him for help.
Overall, a quick entertaining read.

Book: Scottish Werebear: An Unexpected Affair Author: Lorelei Moone Publication Date: 9/25/2015 Reviewed by: Tammy Payne- Book Nook Nuts My Rating: 5 Stars
REVIEW Clarice is off to find some solace and finish writing her novel. She has rented a cottage for 2 weeks. What Clarice is not prepared for is the caretaker / owner of the property. From day one, she thought he was married but she still felt a pull towards him. Derek has never mated nor had he wanted to until Clarice entered his life. After a horrible storm, all bets are off as to Derek keeping his distance. Also, his brother is back and has news concerning their parents death.
This is a new to me author. I can honestly say I enjoyed this book. It is well written and nothing is rushed. The romance is slow to grow but when it hits well all bets are off and everything is super hot. I would recommend this book if you like shifter romances.
I was gifted a copy of this book for my honest review. Lorelei Moone
This is a novella containing around 100 pages. It was a quick read and only took about 2 hours, give or take, to finish. The formatting was done nicely.
I really liked the writing style and enjoyed reading this. If the story would have been just a bit more original, I would have given it 4 stars. I will follow this author to see what she has to come in the future.
This is written like so many other shifter novels. Human female just broke up with cheating human boyfriend. Female decides to take vacation all by herself to clear head and overcome writer's block. Girl and boy meet and insta mate. The shifter male decides to try to avoid said female. Humans don't know about shifters and coupling between the two are not encouraged. Female doesn't understand her feelings for male. Male saves female. I am sure if you have read other shifter books, you know the rest.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for honest review.
Scottish Werebear book 1 : An Unexpected Affair - Lorelei Moone
(4 Stars )
Clarice is a romance novelist who has just broken things off with her boyfriend and the muse to all the yummy stories she writes .In a writing slump , she decides a trip to Scotland might just spark a fire in her writing hand , but what ends up happening is she spends all her time trying to stay clear of her Hot , innkeeper Derek, but when she gets to know him and the secrets that he keeps will their hearts connect?
This was the first book I've read by Lorelei and I actually liked the characters of Clarice and Derek , they didn't get along in the beginning , but you felt that chemistry burning within them. I loved that it was an instant connection for Derek as soon as he came into contact with Clarice , but felt that emotion when he saw that she just wasn't interested . You will definitely feel all the different emotions breathing off of these pages
I received a copy of this book free from Librarything and all I had to do was leave an honest review. Well that's easy enough. I loved this book. It was very well written and I loved the plot. clarice, a writer, gets away to the Scottish Highlands to finish her book after a breakup with a bf. She meets Derek who rents out the cabin she's staying in. When they meet both are ready to run in different directions but can't deny the electricity. I loved Derek and Clarice's characters and the bond they shared. I love paranormal romance. In this story two worlds come together despite the odds that are against them. I just wish I could have gotten more of their story. I want more!! Lol I almost died when it left off where it did. I need to know what happens. Derek is gone and clarice is alone. Will she be safe? Is Aiden okay? Ahh I need more to this series now..

Clarice Adler needed a get away. She just got out of relationship with a cheating loser boyfriend and needed to finish the work that she was going. She thought a break in the country side would do her so good. She was shocked to hear after she arrived in the county that there were bears. There should not be bears around Scotland.
Derek McMilian knew when he saw Clarice that she was his mate. Which he found shocking since he was a bear shifter and bear shifters did not mate with humans. The more time he spent with her the more he knew he had to have her. Will things work out between Clarice and Derek?
An ARC was given for an honest review. This is a entertaining and well written read. She came to the Highlands to get away and finish her book. He rents out the cottage to supplement his income. Neither are looking for a relationship but sometimes fate make choices for you no matter how much you fight against it. This has its own HEA but it is a continuing story. Enjoy I did.
The first half was slow, with barely any interaction between Derek and Clarice, then bing bang boom, it's love! The world is interesting and I want to know more but the romance was meh and needed a stronger foundation and more believability.
