The mythical beast Fenrir has set her sights on Chiaki, and Shirogane in particular is none to happy with the competition. It's dog versus wolf in this showdown that will bring the whole school to its knees! Who will come out on top?!
The art works nice and the Plot does have a few interesting things but it’s definitely going into old trope territory and it’s beginning to get too many characters that I don’t think we’re really necessary to add to the story and I’m just not really super invested in any of the characters I might continue reading the rest of the series though I’m not really sure on that.
Giving this a three because Minnie is SO DAMN ANNOYING and she's unfortunately the "childhood friend" member of the harem. You know, MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE TYPE (all of the sarcasm for this fucking useless harem type). Also, while I love the heavy inclusion of Norse mythology, Jormun and Hel are just not interesting (though I will admit Hel is adorable AS FUCK). To top it all off, the heavy gender-based things present in this volume was annoying (Chiaki being considered "the best girl" because he was so knowledgeable about cake, Minnie's gender based ideas of marriage, etc). Normally that stuff doesn't bother me, but it just seemed forced and the cake buffet chapter tried to play it off as funny, but it wasn't.
That being said, I do like Shirogane and Roze's small developments in this volume and I do love the mythology present, including the monsters. I am still enjoying this series, but this was a weak volume compared to the last two.
Getting back to this series after a long hiatus. While it still has a lot of charm, it's also falling into some tired old tropes that diminish its appeal somewhat. Between the Cerberus triplets, and Komone, we already had something of a stand-in for the "childhood friend with a promise" cliche, except more interesting: Komone has been in love with Chiaki for awhile, whereas the Cerberus trio (particularly Roze) made a different sort of promise when both they and Chiaki were much younger. Together, all of them made for a decent proxy for the above-mentioned trope, while being different enough to provide an interesting dynamic...and then the series had to introduce an actual childhood friend with a promise, and the result is a lessening of what made Today's Cerberus distinctive.
There's still the supernatural element--arguably more so, considering several new mythological characters get introduced in this volume. But so much of the focus has shifted to Minnie, the girl from Chiaki's past, who promised she'd marry him someday, that it's threatening to become a bit generic. At least they kiss (which is more than I can say for a lot of star-crossed protagonists in romantic comedy manga), but that of course only leads to more misunderstandings, which in turn brings Today's Cerberus dangerously close to falling into an uninspired rut. Komone was a perfectly fine human love interest, with personality, depth, and a lot of heart. Minnie just feels...very unnecessary.
I do have another volume of this, so we'll see if it turns itself around. And I hope it does, because the series had a lot going for it, starting out.
Volume 3 is excellent, but I'm taking away a star because of one specific issue that I have with it. If you'd like to see me make an idiot of myself, then click on My Review of Today's Cerberus Volume 3.
Okay, this is a harem manga for certain. If there was any doubt, Minnie, the childhood sweetheart, was flown in from Greece. Minnie is that annoying character every harem manga has. Oh, well!
We have seen lots of jokes and random stories. Now we get to see more of the world Chiaki lives in and more about his past and people he met. We also cleary establish a "villain", group in the story, and all with the same level of hilariousness we are used to.
I've already read the whole series. This one is my favorite. I lvoe roze shirogane and kuro!! They are funny and humor filled stories about a boy with a missing soul!!
