John Hemmings is an experienced criminal attorney and writer of crime fiction with a one hundred percent record as a criminal trial lawyer - not one of his clients has ever been executed...yet!
He graduated in English literature and spent five years as a post-graduate lecturer before turning to a life of crime - on the right side of the fence of course. Each of his books features Boston private investigator Mark Kane and his long-time companion Lucy.
Many of the stories are inspired by actual events and people the author has met and worked with during his career, but names and locations have been changed to protect the innocent - and sometimes the guilty.
On his website: www.johnhemmings.net you can read the first 5 chapters of each of his books in the Mark Kane Mysteries series (and even read the first 4 chapters of the next book in the series: 'Missing'. which is due to be published in approximately 6 weeks).
I didn't enjoy the style of this one. Where were the thrills, the excitement, the urgency to turn the page to find out what happened next? There was too much explanation of what happened after an event, or prior to the event. I was disappointed, considering the build-up in the Preface.
Couldn't wait to finish ! Poor grammar, idiotic predictable dialog, trite and I believe Hemmings dug a hole that needed so much explanation for what everyone reading probably presaged...the base of the operation was easily calculable....even with my limited knowledge of police work or creative writing prowess. It is difficult to suggest anyone read this excessively long poor imitation of works by better writers.
Lucy and Kane (yeah, I know, it's supposed to be Kane and Lucy but DANG she's fantastic are the new, updated, fantastic duo taking on the bad guys and living to tell about it. After reading Forget Me Not, Book 1 in the Mark Kane Mysteries series, I was lucky enough to score Book 2, Ice. I'm hooked, folks, completely hooked. Still 8 more to go -- so far. Author John Hemmings said he tries to imitate the icon Raymond Chandler, and he succeeds fabulously. In Ice, Lucy and Kane take on the creeping intrusion of meth into the Boston area, and they help knock it out of the park, saving the life of a beautiful young and oh-so-innocent heroine while they banter back and forth -- well, SHE banters, he tries to keep up, and they all live happily every after -- NOT. Well, if you're looking for a clean, enticing, funny, gotta-read-it-all-in-one-sitting cozy, you'll find it in here. Bye, I have to get started on Book #3.
I read this book immediately after 're-reading the first book in the series. I was so totally gripped by it that I read it in about two days. I think the reason I enjoy the Mark Kane series of books so much is that the storylines are different to the norm. They don't just rely on the age old formula of man kidnapping, torturing, killing woman. That said, there is a kidnap in this book but even that does not follow the norm. Another thing I like is that there are not so many characters that I get lost. There are plenty of characters but it is easy for me to keep track of them. This is a series I am definitely going to follow to the end.
ICE by John Hemming s is indeed a thrilling detective story and a n=must read for anyone who writers simulating they style of Chandler and Spillane. Like those masters Hemmings writes good, no, not good, great hard-boiled, two fist-ted private eye fiction. Even the dialogue resembles that of the Chandler and Spillane characters. Great job John, am looking forward to reading more of your books in this series.
Characters are believable as is the plot. Story runs smoothly with good writing. A pleasant read as there is no vulgarity, brutality, or cheap sex to divert from the quality of the story It is really like reading on the level of chandler and the old style writers where you have to think as you read. And of course there is a twist here and there plus a surprise ending!
This book was a good read for a rainy day. It was a mystery that became more complicated as you progressed through the book. By the end of the book, more characters were guilty than not. It all worked out in the end. If you enjoy a light mystery, be sure and read this book. I would give this book a 4.5 rating of I could.
I couldn't get past the first 3 pages, before I stopped reading the book. If you are going to write a book, at least know how to write a proper sentence. Even I know that, there is not to be more than one "And" in a sentence. If there is more than one "And" in a sentence, then it is a run on sentence.
As a mystery novel there are the who, what, where, when, and why. The storey is quirky at times even funny .l personaly don't care for a lot of filler, there seamed more filler than storey instead of the other way around. The storey was great just to much filler. The mane caracters are fantastic and as I said the storey is solid. Kat
Kane gets hired by a young couple, the women who recently returned from visiting family in the Phillipines and had one of her bags stolen at the airport in Boston on her return. Kane thinks it is a lost cause, but he needs to do something, so he takes the case. He quickly finds out the woman was an innocent mule bringing drugs into the US. The rest is a pretty good read.
Very well written PI novel without all the gory details and vulgar language. Very engaging, this is one of those "don't want to put it down" books. I'll definitely be reading more of John Hemmings works!
This was a very nice change from the standard mystery story with this being a 'doesn't story. The intimate details are not needed to tell an intriguing and good mystery story.
I rate this a 4.5. A bag is stolen from the airport and a private investigator is hired to find it. With lots of luck, he does. Bug then murders start occurring leading to drug smuggling into the US. This was a fast, easy to read mystery.
I loved the way this book’s twist and turns took me. Kane and Lucy make a great team and it’s funny how she try’s keeping Kane on the straight and narrow. Just like the book. The person behind everything made me shake my head. Excellent
Private investigator Kane solves another case in this second book of the Kane series. This book has to do with the smuggling of drugs and a bit on child prostitution. I really enjoyed this book very much.
Well written, am excellent and believable plot good characters. Seems like a series of books that an entire family could read yet quite adult in its premise
A great intense and detailed mystery by John Hemmings. It was a fantastic read from page one to the end as all the facts get discovered and the story unfolds before your eyes. A must read for lovers of mysteries. I loved it!!!
I love mysteries! I usually solve the books I'm reading and find I'm usually correct. Not so with this one LOL and this is EXACTLY why it's a great read!
I'm not a prude - I use f### as much as the next guy, but I would rather not stumble over the word in the course of listening to a book. Brian (GBR) has no problem with the word. I would rather not hear his British text to speech encounter the word.
I got this book not knowing it was book 2 of a series. However it read like a standalone. I got it yesterday and, today, I finished it. I thought it was well-written and there were no typos. I thought it was as advertised a nice, clean mystery. I would recommend it.
Ok story with the familiar main characters & a couple of small twists but nowhere near as good as book 1. Feels like this book was rushed out & still needs a bit more editing to shape the story
