Porter Brothers Trilogy #1

Keeping What’s His: Tate

Rate this book
The Porter Brother's were raised to live and die by Three Rules

One, a Porter stands his ground

Two, a Porter leaves no enemy standing

Three...

Sutton Creech was a cheat and a liar. Tate Porter had found that out when he was eighteen, and he had no intention of letting her make a fool out of him again. He didn’t care how much pain he saw in her eyes or how old memories tugged at his unforgiving heart until, the night a hidden secret is revealed and everything Tate had believed about their past is shattered, proving he had let the woman he loved get away.

Between trying to protect his family and running their pot growing business, Tate doesn't have time to play the "Nice Guy". He'd just have to remember the most important rule his father had given them: A Porter always keeps what's his.

1 I'm Proud of Myself for Even Finishing This Star

***Full review posted - sort of spoiler-y***

Good. Lord. I regret this purchase.

Here's Why, Homies:

1) Tate.

I love assholes.

No, not actual physical assholes, you gutter rats.

description

I like it when my Heroes are strong alpha, badass assholes.

*
*
*

But there is a difference between a strong alpha, badass asshole...

...and a man who puts actual (as in literal) NOTCHES on his shot gun barrel for every woman he's fucked.

description

A man who is not a teenager, but a grown ass fucking "man" (I use this term loosely here) in his 30's.

description

A man who, when he ran out of room on one shot gun?

Started.

On

ANOTHER.

Shot.

Gun.

description

2) Tho Plot.

Think of swiss cheese:

description

Cheesy and full of holes.

3) Sutton's Backstory.

Here's where the rubber really melted on the road for me.

At what point did all authors decide they had to "out-tragedy" each other in order to make their characters sympathetic?

No seriously.

It's like they all have a contest going on who can create a character who has the most tragic past imaginable.

Or has martyred themselves in ways that even Jesus would say, "Wow, that's a bit much."

description

And, in Sutton's case, she's both.

Tragic AND martyred.

description

Lots of stories get a little too Days of Our Lives for my taste, but the rubber band of belief suspension can only stretch so far, homies.

And in this one?

description

Or I'm just a huge bitch.

Probably option B.

Because instead of feeling sympathy and invested in Sutton, this was me the more I learned about her:

description

And with that...

Dear John Jamie: IT’S TIME TO CHANGE!
“Insanity: doing the same thing over & over again & expecting different results.” ~Einstein

STEP 1: EPIPHANY
I almost bought Keeping What's His, but after reading the reviews, I realized: I’m not “THAT GIRL” anymore.

“THAT GIRL” who thinks:
description

Your hero won’t be an immature, egotistical, douchebag who nails every vagina in the county (including the heroine’s BFF) & unapologetically rubs the heroine’s nose in it. But it’s okay. Because the second he decides he wants her, she’ll come running, even though he’s done nothing to prove his worth.

&

Your heroine won’t be a insecure martyr who pines for a guy who mistreats her & nails anything with a vagina (including her BFF). But it’s okay. Because she, like, totally loves him & his steely abs & magic cock.

THEN, INEVITABLY GETS:
description

&
description

STEP 2: COMPREHENSION
Apparently, if you look in the dictionary, next to the word “Insanity”, you will find a picture of me. So the question is: How in the hell did I become, “THAT GIRL”?

Hmm, could it be...
description

By "Liza Minnelli” I, of course, mean "YOU" Jamie; & by "lies” I mean “lured me in with a future book featuring a swoon worthy romantic hero”: Shade.

Simply put:

Could you have hooked me with your “Shade bait”, then reeled me into reading more books about douchey mansluts who lure naïve doormats into the Big Brother* house & make them cohabitate with a bunch of inconsiderate, slutty, attention whores (and I don’t mean just the FEMALES)?

YEP!

And with each new douchebag hero you gave me, the steadfast, possessive (albeit devious & briefly slutty) Shade looked more like this:
description

Which is why I felt a tad betrayed when, in Shade’s Fall, a normally possessive, protective Shade inexplicably instigated a Lilly/Knox/Diamond foursome & let Raci wear his jacket. Then darn right disgusted when, in Shade, Mr. Bad-Ass suddenly turned pussy & silently let Bliss hate-on his pregnant, upset wife.

BETRAYAL + DISGUST (Should) =
description

But “THAT GIRL” got an “F” in math!

STEP 3: RELAPSE
Turns out, my desire to see a Bliss smackdown exceeded my disgust with a pussified Shade. Which explains my “1 Click”ing Lucky’s Choice hoping:
description

Lucky won’t blah, blah, blah; Willa won’t blah, blah, blah; & more importantly: Bliss will get her ass kicked, move to Tibet, & become a Buddhist monk!

Whatever! Stop judging me! I told you I was “THAT GIRL”!

Besides, I had 2 good reasons for believing things really would be different this time!

1. In your first 4 LR books, "Pastor Dean" was astute, mature, & wise. Not at all douchebaggy. Douchebaggish? Douchey? You get the gist.

&

2. Other readers also wanted this:
description

So, no one was more surprised than me when you actually delivered:
description

&
description

&, BEST OF ALL:
description

Which explains why my epiphany didn’t occur until I read reviews of Tate’s book.

STEP 4: CHANGE
Sadly, Different Title, Same Story: Douchebag #8 *, reverts back to your old, tired formula. Therefore, I must stop the insanity!

It’s time “THAT GIRL” changed. And Jamie, you should change too!

Time to say ba-bye to douchey slut boys, wimpy Mary Sues, stale/robotic sex scenes where the hero’s inner monologue doesn’t distinguish between a hook-up & true love; & clichéd, bitchy hoes who go Fatal Attraction* on women instead of the men who reject them.

Try something new, Jamie.

Perhaps a choosy hero, or a bi-sexual one, or a submissive? Maybe a slutty, “girl-code” abiding heroine, or a smartass with nunchaku skills, or a dominatrix. A love triage? Hell, I’d settle for a hero who’s bored with hook-ups & eager to live a grown-up life.

Because this time, DOUCHEBAG + DOORMAT (Does) =
description

And “THIS GIRL” finally gets an “A” in math!

* Big Brother. Reality T.V. 2000-Present

When I found out that the Porter's where getting their own series I was all like...

description

If you've read The Last Riders series then you already know who they are. If you haven't then what you need to know is that they are 3 redhead, weed growing, pot selling, hillbillies and this is the older brother's story, Tate.

description

He and Sutton where high school sweethearts but a lot of misunderstandings, some blackmailing and one hot headed guy (HIM) brought their relationship to an end and forced Sutton to leave and never come back...or at least that's what he thought.

A few years later she's back but the old Sutton has died and what's left are only the memories...

description

It takes Tate a while to get his head out of his ass but he soon realizes that everything he knew was not the truth and that he's not letting her go again...

description

Bottom line is that I really liked this book...it had a few things I wasn't over the moon about but once I picked it up I found myself reading it in one stunt...unable to stop :P

"If we fall, we'll do it together."

In High School, Tate Porter and Sutton Creech were the couple that never should have been together. He was the hillbilly, weed grower and she was the daughter of a judge, good girl. But when Sutton spends a summer with her Pap and it puts her in close proximity of Tate the two can't stay away from each other. Together through both easy and hard times they promise each other a lifetime of happiness. Until Sutton betrays Tate the night of Prom and then moves away for school, leaving him behind.

Eighteen years later Sutton is back in town to make amends wrongs she did and to set the record straight for the ones she didn't do. Tate doesn't want Sutton back in town to remind him of her betrayal, but when someone tries to frame him for murder he ends up needing Sutton's help. Hiding out with her in her Pap's cabin they finally have a chance to clear the air between them. Sutton just wants to be able to move on with her life, but now that Tate knows the truth, he isn't letting her get away again.
"A Porter always keeps what's his."

When I found out the Porter's were getting their own book I literally jumped up and down. I just knew these crazy ass boys would have fantastic stories and Tate's book just proved it for me. I loved Tate and Sutton together, they were fun and crazy but also sweet and lovable and I loved the emotional rollercoaster they sent me on.

Tate was stubborn and set in his ways but I found his character hilarious at times, especially when he was around his brothers. Most people thought he was just the dumb hillbilly who grew the good weed, but he actually had a lot more to his character. He was pretty smart and he cared an enormous amount for his family. I really loved how close all of the porter's were and how easy they accepted Sutton into their lives.

I actually really liked Sutton, which is surprising because I was nervous about her character for some reason. After she left town she had a hard life and lived through some really horrible things that not everyone could survive. I admired the strength she had to be able to come back from that and try to move on. She was, understandable, nervous about being back with Tate, when he started to make a play for her, but I really liked how she faced her fears and gave their relationship a chance again.

At the end I struggled a bit with the relevance of Cheryl's situation, and just the overall end to the mystery killer. Other than that I loved this story and I'm already waiting for the next Porter brother to get his girl.

Formulaic story except with drug dealers, bikers and the F word.

This is a pretty standard formulaic, "you broke my heart when I was young" romance, except the hero and his family are drug dealers. It's hard to relate to people whose main concerns are patrolling their fields and having their business undercut by other dealers.

I couldn't really connect to any of the characters, and the story line kept being oddly interrupted by references to supernatural abilities not previously mentioned. I wondered if it had been explained in a previous book but no, this is the first of the series. It was confusing.

I don't mind the odd obscenity in books as punctuation or a expression of frustration. I do mind 103 uses of the F word in its various incarnations, including -ed and -ing. It's tiresome and in this book, often out of character. I know some truck drivers who curse, yet none of them would ever tell a friend to "F somebody" on a vacation. A judge theirs around the F -bomb. After a while it loses its punch and becomes meaningless.

Can't recommend. The only new things about this book is making heroes out of drug dealers who are in and out of jail and friendly, jolly bikers.

Muito bom! Adorei a história! Louca pelo próximo!

“Tate, I see a rainbow.” She pointed excitedly. It was practically outside their window.
“I do, too.”
She glanced back at him. “You’re not even looking.”
“How could I not? I’m holding the pot of gold.”
“That’s so sweet.”
“I’ve told you, I’m not sweet. Men don’t want women to think of them as sweet.”
“Okay … Now you’re being an ass.”

I so looked ,forward to a new JB book but this one did not work for me.Huge misunderstanding that broke this couple when they were teenagers,an 18 year separation where they both went on with their lives. He to grow pot and screw half the town even the heroine's bff, yuck!!! She to marry,be horribly abused by her husband, lose a child, depression, suicide attempts.I just could not connect with them,he hated the heroine so much at the beginning, then love her so much just did not ring true. And why did she continue to wear her wedding ring from her dead husband 6 years after he died and finally throws it off a cliff in the epilouge?
I may or may not continue with this series.I have to say that this is the most tortured of JB heroines baring what Lily went thru in her childhood.A plus for the hero,he was great with his family.

2.89 "from a middle-of-the-road fan" stars

I admit, due to the shenangins of the Porter Bros., whom readers met in The Last Riders series, and due to the "hillbilly-cute" couple of this piece, Sutton and Tate, I feel relieved that I was able to go back to the world of Treepoint again and enjoy it after the epic fail of my once-favorite biker, Shade, and the staleness that was becoming one of my favorite mediocre/"pass-the-time" biker romance worlds.

In the start of this Porter Brothers trilogy, the reader gets to catch up on the news of some favorite cray-cray characters and gets some appearances of some of The Last Riders. The Porter Brothers' plot intertwines with the other two series in this world; however, these Porters bring their own backwoods, hillbilly, family-stick-together business in tow, and its all of hilarious, full of rivalry, contrariness, and just two shades over on the wrong side of the law, depending on how one looks at it.

Sutton is a girl who fell in love with the ill-reputed Porter boy, and even though she and Tate lose their way, and I did NOT like this part of the mix, the story shows how bad choices have the power to send one's life down dark paths; it also features how first loves can be forever and advises that "ifs" which store pain should be turned into truths that invite healing.

It's a wonder that with the lags, overdone trends and sketchiness evident in Begley's writing style, her stories can still show small pockets of unique characterization and semi-notable depictions of current ethical issues (like domestic violence). These inclusions would make me give more stars if other things in the plot didn't run through my head as periodically implausible.

It's like the story had just enough to tip over to decent or just enough to give the reader something to remember, but then, on the other hand, disappointingly...not enough, at all.

So, if you have read The Last Riders and The Biker Bitches series, and were even half won over by Sex Pistol, Killyama, Knox, or Shade (the idea of him, that is), etc., then maybe try the Porter brothers, without too much expectation(at least, that's how I always go into it). I myself am especially interested in Greer's story...

Warning: sex is a major character in these series, and manwhores are included, but sometimes other elements shine through (they did, sort of, with this book).

Happy Reading.

This was fresh air brought into this series, and interesting who-done-it!!
I like the Porter Brothers & their shenanigans, kooky reasonings, and fierceness!!
Sutton poor soul needs some healing and Tate’s finally the man to be her Protector in life❤️❤️❤️
Of course Shade appears..lol, with his style of help too😉
💝Perfect ending💖

✨Very interesting tidbits in this book:
💀 The death bell:
the curse of knowing someone was going to die
never knew whom Death was going to strike
it could be a family member or someone you had been near recently
🔔the first toll was a warning that Death was coming, 🔔🔔the second meant Death had found his victim, 🔔🔔🔔 and the third was Death’s arrival

Nice: -“Be careful you don’t fall down that rabbit hole twice, Alice.” 🤨
-“She could cut you to the quick with her remarks” (Mag, Cash’s gma)
-“I’ve found out that sex is better than potato chips. The more you have, the more you want.”
-By hook or by crook
🤭That’s quite the insult “Daffy Duck has more sense than you!” 🤣🤣

😯Oh, I quite like cornbread, I’ll have to try this:
-they each tore the cornbread up into their milk and ate it with their spoons
-honey poured over warm cornbread 🍯

Anyone find this “Camp Town Ladies” he was humming???????🎶

🤭There appears be a proper multi-series order…oopsie🙃
Oh well, I’m enjoying it💋

UPDATED: I don’t know what the hell my problem was the first time I read this. Apparently, I hated it a lot because I gave it a shitty review and rated it with 1 star. I definitely changed my opinion, even though I really hate the miscommunication trope & second chance romance fics.

He had waited eighteen years for Sutton’s return—hard, agonizing years for both of them. He was going to make sure each year they spent together would replace the time of heartache they had spent apart. If they lived a thousand years, maybe, just maybe, it would be even.

Tate Porter (37-ish, arrogant, hot-headed, whore) fell in love with his rich girl, Sutton Creech (35-ish, pharmaceutical sales), when she was 17 and he was already taking care of his siblings after his parents died. Since the Porters make their living growing weed, the family wasn’t thought highly of in town, especially by her father, the county judge.

“You didn’t deserve Sutton then, and you still don’t. I wanted a man who would give his life for her, protect and love my baby girl the way her mother and I did. I kept waiting for you to prove me wrong. I wanted you to prove me wrong….. You’re too big an asshole to realize what you let go, though. God help you when you do.”

An ultimatum from her father, lying to protect, Cash Adams and a disastrous prom night, anger & retaliation, lots of lies, years of separation, loss of a child, loss of a spouse, and finally after eighteen years Sutton has returned home.

“I’m not a nice guy. Everyone in town will tell you I’m a mean son of a bitch. I should have claimed you when you were seventeen. I fucked up. I won’t do that again. I’m giving you fair warning, Sutton: you’re mine.”

When Tate is accused of a crime, he’s forced to seek refuge in Sutton’s house. When he learns the truth, he vows to make things right – if he doesn’t get killed first.

“You might have a million reasons not to trust me, but I only need one chance to prove you wrong.”

SEX: JB really lets us down in this one. Tate is barely a one pump chump, sometimes he gets two pumps in. Their first time is at 55% and although it’s sweet, it doesn’t last. None of their times together are really that impressive. At least in this one we don’t have to deal with Tate having sex with anyone else, but we do have to hear about it….

CHERYL: Ugh… you might recall Cheryl from Shade & Lily’s book. She’s fucked all The Last Riders – and she’s also fucked Tate too. Tate was also a bastard and fucked all of Sutton’s friends back in the day. Fucking whore. Plus, poor Sutton has to watch a video of Tate & Cheryl fucking. She doesn’t get upset about it, but I sure did.

TRUTH: The truth comes out at 38%, which I guess in the grand scheme of things isn’t that long. There’s plenty of angst up until that point. Tate was a BASTARD to her, and I don’t know if I could have forgiven him, but I guess if I forgive The Last Riders for their transgressions then I can forgive him.

ANIMALS: Thankfully they don’t kill any animals in this one, but they sure as shit talk about it a lot. The Porter men talk about killing opossums, racoons, and squirrels. I know it’s common for people in the country, doesn’t mean I want to be reminded of it.

WHORES: I still don’t get why JB loves for her men to be such whores. Has anyone actually met JB in person?? Are we sure it isn’t a man???

TRIGGERS: These are hard ones and will definitely trigger a few folks. They’re also spoilers.

ERRORS: I can’t be mad at this book because it was written first, but this totally contradicts what’s written in Rider’s Revenge. This will be spoilers, but I’m irritated about it so I’m going to tell you.

How could Jamie Begley fuck up her own book like that???

Anyway – I guess I recommend this because I really love Greer and Dustin.

Well… it was supposed to be great… until you added those bikers.

I don’t hate bikers or something like that. It just that… I felt like adding those fucked up the story a bit, in some ways.

I think I’m going to read the next one.

I love Jamie Begley' s writing as is captures the roughness in us all and the fiction we wish for. This story line was kinda been there done that for me and the editing needed some definite attention. Ok read, but eh...I'd pass.

What a great start to a new series! I really enjoyed Tate & Sutton's second chance romance story!! It was emotional, it was funny, it made my heart smile & it made my heart break. It just felt so real & so right for them to reconnect & get that second chance at first love.

I LOVED the fact that Tate & Sutton were such an evenly matched couple. Usually in this genre, one of the main characters (generally, the guy) pulls more than their fair share of jerkface moves, making it easy to blame them for the relationship going sour. In this case, you can't really play the blame game. They both had what I thought were valid reasons for doing the things they did (or didn't do) & they both hurt as a result of them.

"They were old friends and sweethearts. They couldn't get back what they had shared when they were younger. However, it was time for them to see if the adults they had become could make something more."

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Tate... I LOVED getting into his head! He has been through so much; the loss of his parents & the guilt he felt after their death, having to be responsible for so much at a young age, the loss of his first & only love, the stress of having such a dangerous "job"... Not to mention someone trying to frame him for MURDER! He has an adorably rugged romantic side to him and it was sweet to see him show it with Sutton. Don't worry, he's not syrupy sweet, he's protective & take charge too and it's HOT!

Sutton aka Tate's Sassy Pants... I hated the ultimatum that was given to her by her parents and truly wished there was a way she could've worked around it. I understand why she did what she did (because it was all for Tate & his family) but it killed me to see the hurt in Tate's eyes when it happened. My heart ached so badly when we learned of what happened to her in her time away from Treepoint. The losses she suffered... No one should have to go through something like that and the fact that she was all alone when it happened left my stomach all twisted up in knots. It was kinda crazy to learn that she kept in touch with Treepoint while she was away. Contacting Diamond, secretly attending Cash & Rachel's wedding, reading Treepoint's local paper daily... Sutton never stopped caring for Tate and it showed through those actions. But... I wasn't a fan of her claiming he didn't fight for her. She left him & shouldn't have automatically expected him to chase after her, especially given the circumstances.

Greer... I wanted to kick him in the nuts multiple times. Diane, really? WTF is he still doing with her? He did provide us with one of the best moments though- Rachel turning a paintball gun on him. It. Was. Awesome. And when Holly got in on the action? Priceless. I'm very curious to see if he & Holly get together down the line. Her true feelings broke through twice for him in this book & my heart is already breaking for her.

Dustin... We already knew the title of his book, Claiming His Enemy, and now it's starting to make sense. We found out who the Porters #1 enemy is and they just so happen to have a daughter... Seems like a likely candidate for his woman, doesn't it? But shoot... there goes my hope that Willa would play matchmaker between him & Ginny! And one more thing... What the heck was he doing going out on a date with Kaley?! How is she not in prison for the part she played in Razer, Beth & Lily's kidnapping/abuse in Shade?

The action/bad guy part of the story was probably the weakest part for me (because it was kinda unbelievable) but I appreciated the fact that it was spread throughout the book instead of lasting only a couple of pages.

Other tasty tidbits-
*Cash & Rachel... EXTRA special news where my favorite couple is concerned! Thank you to pieces for this Jamie Begley!! #DreamsReallyDoComeTrue
*Jo... Looks like she'll play a bigger role in her family business. Here's hoping we get some more of her feisty attitude! #WatchYourBackCurtDawkins
*Lisa West (the foster parent in Lucky's Choice) makes an appearance... #SecretsNeverStayHiddenWhenShadesAround

Looking forward to the next book in this trilogy but really... just looking forward to the next Jamie Begley book! Period. Hopefully, it's Penni & Jackal's!!

If I had known that this was an 18 year separation where the Zero did not fight for the heroine, I would not have read this book at all. The heroine had an ott tragic story after their break up in high school. She was also TSTL who let pride get in the way of her and her daughter’s safety. She was too proud to go back to her parents after suffering years of abuse from her hubby and even if she was scared for the safety of her daughter, she still did not ask for help from her judge father...

I have such a book hangover after reading this one. I've loved the craziness of the Porters in The Last Riders Series, so I was definitely excited about seeing them with their own series. And it didn't disappoint. Laughter, tears, and steaminess abound in Tate's story.

This is a pretty average book. I was very tempted to rate it 2 stars, since so much of the storyline was ridiculous, but the actual writing moved along well enough.

I have read this kind of back to front. The Porter Brothers Trilogy is a spin-off from Jamie Begley's Last Rider's series. This is a standalone but there are mentions of the Last Rider's MC club in here.

Jamie Begley knows how to write a grade A - asshole and I am a sucker for this type of male character. The three Porter Brothers fit this bill perfectly.

Raised by a strict father their family lived by three rules:

One: you stand your ground
two: you leave no enemy standing
three: A Porter always keeps what is his.

Tate Porter had loved Sutton Creech with everything he had....that was until he decided she was a liar and a cheat. She broke his 18 year old heart and he was determined that would never happen again. Now 18 years later she is back but she is not the same woman.

Tate doesn't have time to play the 'nice guy'. He has a family to protect and a business to run and he didn't care about the pain he now saw in Sutton's eyes or the resurrected memories......but Sutton has a hidden secret and when it is revealed, Tate soon realizes that he didn't keep the Porter third rule - he let the woman he loved get away.

Good storyline and good characters...... and the warning give an insight to what to expect from this story.

Straight onto book 2 which is Greer's story. It should be interesting because he is a bigger grade A asshole than his brother.
