The Horse of My Heart: Stories of the Horses We Love

Rate this book
Shining coat flashing in the sun. Silky mane rippling in the wind. A toss of the head and the stamp of a hoof.

Few of God’s creatures are as noble and soul-stirring as the horse. Even those of us who aren’t lucky enough to have horses of our own seem to have an innate desire to connect with these beautiful, regal beasts. As children we read stories about them, collected models of them, and tacked posters of them up on our walls. Throughout history they have carried us and calmed us, pulled our loads and pulled at our heartstrings. They give us a taste of wildness and yet make us feel at home.

In this inspiring collection, you’ll meet horses who show up at the right time, who help their humans learn important truths, and who rescue the very people who rescued them. These true stories of horses and the people who love them are sometimes touching, sometimes humorous, and sometimes miraculous. Always they are inspiring, like the horses themselves. They will touch your heart, renew your spirit, and show you that surely God had us in mind when he created these magnificent creatures.

Do you like Guideposts? You'll love this book.

I'm not a fan of Guideposts, but I love horses (and all other animals) so I found that part enjoyable. The writing skills range from good to terrible. This isn't a book I'd exactly recommend, but you could certainly find much worse collections of horse stories. And some of these stories are good: a few had me choking with laughter and some even brought tears to my eyes.

This book reminded me of my disastrous attempts at horsemanship. I never took lessons and consequently never had a clue what I was doing. Besides, all the horses I borrowed and rode were extremely barn sour. I can't really say this are good memories, but my desire to truly learn how to ride and handle horses is still thriving. Needless to say, some of these stories which display effortless horsemanship made me a little jealous.

I've always had a love for horses and for almost as long as I can remember have wanted to own a horse, but that dream hasn't happened yet. I loved reading all the stories in this book. The stories range from sweet to sad and from serious to funny, but they were all extremely enjoyable. If you're a horse lover like I am, you should enjoy this collection of stories. I definitely recommend this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. I was asked to give my honest opinion of the book - which I have done.

A nice selection of horse stories by people who love them, which doesn't necessarily mean they can write. It was a nice light read and uplifting to see that many people acknowledge the need and presence of God in their lives.

Callie Smith Grant collected over thirty horse stories in this book, to share the experience of healing, bond, and life between human and horses.

I like horses: to look at them, to stroke their fur, to drive in the cart while being shaken by bumpy roads…. all the great memories of the childhood. But I have a secret to share, riding on the back of the horse was the obstacle to me… scared and overwhelmed…

I enjoyed the stories in the book, because they depict horses in more than a racing trophies, displaying the skills to dribble and trout; more than chasing creations, wild and untamed… they feel, they react, they are herd animals who responsible to protect each other, to look after one another, to snuggle and communicate through touches… they have so much to teach humanity to be connected, trusting, and kind.

This was a good book but not really outstanding. I thought the stories were going to be a little bit more spiritually focused, some were some weren't. As with all compilations it varied a lot, some stories you could tell horses meant a lot to the writer, other's shared their one experience with horses. I found the latter stories shallow and annoying.

I loved the short stories. It felt good to read other riders struggles and things they worked through. My horse has been trying to buck me off and we worked through that while I was reading this. Fun read for encouragement through the process! God gave us a beautiful gift, the horse.

A Horse is a Horse....

SEE THIS REVIEW ON MY BLOG: http://bookreadingtic.com/2015/11/11/...

Open the cover of this book and enter the world of horses, and those who love them. This collection of over thirty true stories will touch your heart. These tales cover the gamut of children's horses, to horses that have played a major role in the life of adults.

Wanda Dyson remembers the day a horse named Lady somehow opened her front door, and let herself into the house on a mission of mercy. Lady then led Wanda to a badly injured horse.

Shirley Zeller recounts what it was like to grow up on a remote horse ranch in North Dakota. Despite it taking place in the 20th century, her experiences could have been with the cowboys of the 1800's.

Sherri Gallagher shares idyllic days she, and her friend spent on horseback. While munching peanut butter sandwiches and homemade cookies, they explored fields, forests and everything in between, all while atop their horses.

Not all the horses were owned by the people who adored them. Claudia Wolfe St. Clair relates the love her mom had for the great racehorse, Secretariat. She was so enamored with him, that a surprise Christmas visit to see the famous racer filled her with joy. Not only did she see him, Secretariat came right up to her mom, and let her touch him. The thrill she got from that still resonates off the pages today.

Hold your horses, is that right?

Despite knowing very little about horses, these stories were a delight to read. Not only was I entertained, I learned some "horse facts." For instance, I was very surprised to find out the type of horse that lots of Amish people get to pull their buggies. I also smiled when I discovered why, Macaroni "The White House Pony," had to have chicken wire around him.

I really liked this book, despite knowing nothing about horses before I read the first page. If you don't have any experience with horses, you might consider changing that after reading The Horse of My Heart. This will be a treasure to those who already love these four-footed friends. These are all short stories, so they can be read a little bit at a time, or the entire book can be read straight through. Either way, it will be a real pleasure, even more so, since there are no objectionable scenes or language. This book will leave a smile on your face long after it is finished. I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys well-written or true stories--and most certainly to horse lovers.

The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of The Horse of My Heart through Revell Publishing for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal. Despite my receiving the book free, it has not influenced my judgment.

Callie Smith Grant has edited a number of animal books including: The Cat on My Lap, The Cat in the Window, The Dog Next Door, and The Dog at My Feet.

I will never forget my first trail ride in the hot, sandy hills in California. My Uncle Harry picked out an old, gentle mare for me, a pretty Appaloosa, white and spotted. She proved a dream horse for an inexperienced rider. I just had to hold the reigns, and she obediently stayed in line with the other horses and riders.

My first trail ride turned eventful, however. When coming down a steep hill, I hit a snag of barbed wire that I did not see. The horse took off in a wild run causing me to drop the reigns. I grabbed the horn of the saddle and held on for dear life as the horse passed the other horses careening down the hill approaching a stream bed.

My uncle yelled at me to cry, “Ho.” I barely whispered the word and then managed to yell it. The mare came to a sudden stop. Somehow, I managed to stay in the saddle. Shaken, I grabbed the reigns and turned her back toward the other riders. Looking back, I saw another rider getting off the ground. She’d been thrown when her horse had reared up in fear.

Despite, the few minutes of terror, I enjoyed the rest of the ride. As we neared home, my little mare sped up in excitement. I gripped the reigns as she galloped the last few yards. Then I groomed and fed her after taking her saddle off.

Reading The Horse of My Heart brought that special day back to life for me. This beautiful book is excellent for the horse lover in your life. I especially believe tween and teen girls will love it. Callie Smith Grant compiles a series of true, inspiring stories about these beautiful creatures that will touch your heart. The stories illustrate that horses magical creatures full of wonder and love.

We meet horses of all kinds: sweet, loving, funny, heroic, and brave. From an old, retired horse who doesn’t want to come out from the pasture to needy and neglected horses, these horses win over your heart immediately. They touch and influence their humans in so many different ways.

Contributors to this anthology include many well-known authors such as Lauraine Snelling, Susy Flory, Rebecca E. Ondov, Wanda Dyson, and Sarah Parshall Perry. These true stories of horses and the people who love them are sometimes touching, sometimes humorous, and sometimes miraculous.

Callie Smith Grant is the editor of other great animal books including A Prince among Dogs and A Dickens of a Cat. She is also the author of several nonfiction books for young readers and adults as well as many animal-themed stories and poems which can be seen in Guideposts anthologies and in magazines such as Small Farmers Journal.

Callie Smith Grant in her new book, “The Horse of My Heart” published by Revell gives us Stories of the Horses We Love.

From the back cover: Shining coat flashing in the sun. Silky mane rippling in the wind. A toss of the head and the stamp of a hoof.

Few of God’s creatures are as noble and soul-stirring as the horse. These true stories of horses and the people who love them are sometimes touching, sometimes humorous, and sometimes miraculous. Always they are inspiring, like the horses themselves. They will touch your heart, renew your spirit, and show you that surely God had us in mind when he created these magnificent creatures.

The Lone Ranger had Silver, Zorro had Tornado, Roy Rogers had Trigger and when we were growing up we had the Westerns with all those horses. Let’s face it if we already had a dog as a pet our next choice would be a horse. There is something about a horse that draws us. Me, personally, I think there is a nobleness about them. They allow themselves to eat from our hand, ride on their backs and pull their loads. Ms. Grant has pulled together these wonderful stories from all these various authors to give us the complexity that is a horse. There is an intimate relationship between man and horse as well as woman and horse. In these true stories horses help in the healing process, help some in adjusting to life’s changes and then together human and horse where the horse is rescued and then the horse does the rescuing. All in all a wonderful look at some of the most magnificent animals in creation.

Horses and Heartstrings

Humans and horses have worked and played together for centuries, and this bond finds its way into everyday life when you have a child who loves horses. My oldest son read horse books, played with model horses, and sat astride his stick horse to ride far and wide in search of . . . who knows what? Best of all, he found and married a horse lover, and, together, they dream of a barn and pasture for that someday horse of their own.

The Horse of My Heart captures this adoration of horses in thirty-two stories, written by a team of horse-lovers and expertly corralled by editor, Callie Smith Grant. Sometimes it’s the little girl who grows up to find her heart’s desire in some horse barn, but just as often it’s the mum or dad with the longing for a four-legged friend who doubles as transportation.

Along with this selection of stories, readers will find articles profiling famous horses in history along with informational pieces about horse-lore from the origin of the term “horsepower” to the secret identity of most Amish buggy horses.

“The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man,” is a quote I’ve heard attributed to Ronald Reagan, who may have gotten it from Winston Churchill, but a Google search just muddies the waters with names like Woodrow Wilson’s physician and someone named Theodore Parker. At any rate, whoever said the words would appreciate the evidence for their truth provided in the pages of The Horse of My Heart:

“”Horses are herd animals, and Tash and I had found our herd – together. She was my kindred spirit.”

“Baja was a true blue friend who stuck closer than a brother.”

Accounts of horses sleeping outside their owner’s bedroom window, helping their riders to overcome fears, and bringing out the hero in people are just a small cross section of the inspiring tales offered. Writers share their experiences of relationships of mutual trust, and acknowledge that, as they have trained their horse, their horse is also training them.

This inspiring collection is a sure hit for the horse-lovers on your Christmas list.

My Review:

I’ve always had an odd infatuation with horses. I’ve always wanted one even though we of course have neither the money nor time that it takes to have a horse. Instead I drowned myself in books and movies about them. So when I had the chance to read The Horse of My Heart, I of course was ecstatic.

The Horse of My Heart is a wonderful book full of stories about different people’s various experiences with horses. Each story has an important truth that was taught to the owner at one time or another by their horse. I really enjoyed how each story was wonderfully wrote. Being the horse lover, I am I’d say this book was beautifully put together with each story complementing the others perfectly.

The Horse of My Heart is just one of Callie Smith Grant’s many books. This book was a wonderful read and can’t wait see what this editor has in store for us next.

The Horse of My Heart is a collection of 32 stories that tell of how horses have touched lives in some special way. There are touching stories of dreams coming true. Some stories made me laugh, like the one about Snowbird, a horse that liked being retired and would bloat his stomach out when being saddled so the saddle wouldn’t stay on tight. Other stories highlighted valuable lessons about life. I.E., “It’s not the cover that counts, but the pages within” (p. 35). One story that touched me was of a man who rehabbed himself after heart surgery by walking a horse.
My son has his own horse story. After having three heart surgeries in 2014, we headed to a resort for a much needed vacation. My son couldn’t yet do a lot of the activities he’d normally do like waterskiing or tubing. But there was a horse riding option so we decided to take a trail ride. My son got the horse that liked to go off the path and rub his behind on the trees or stop to eat. I wondered if my son was going to be discouraged that he couldn’t control his horse better. No sir. He was having a blast and enjoyed the horse’s roguish behavior. It was a sweet day for him connecting with a horse.
I think that’s one of the cool things about this book. So many of us, especially girls, loved horses when we were young. Yet depending on where or how we grew up, not many of us had that many opportunities to develop a real relationship with a horse. This book will reawaken some of those longings or remind you of your own horse memories.
Thank you to Revell for providing me with a free copy of this book for the purpose of this review. I have always loved horses and I enjoyed the sweet stories.

The Horse of My Heart
Stories of the Horses We Love
Edited by Callie Grant

The Horse of My Heart is a collection of stories about horses and the people who have loved them and had their lives changed by them. Some of these stories will bring tears to your eyes and a smile to your lips.

All animals have a special place in my heart and I couldn't pass up the chance to read this book where others shared their love of horses. The grace and beauty is shared as well as some of the attitudes that make some horses a "problem child".

But overall these stories are how horses (and animals) have enriched the various authors lives - teaching them something about them-self that they never knew. Responsibility, hidden strengths, a capacity to see past oneself - animals allow us to become more than what we were.

I loved the story "The Pasture Bully". This story reminded me of our Charlotte and her protecting our other horses from our bully horse Wyatt (the baddest horse in the West Central Wisconsin region). Horses are each unique and surprising in their own way.

This is the perfect book for any horse lover and would be a well-loved present. With the holidays coming this would be a nice surprise to find on the family bookcase. I know when I was a kid this would have been my go to book on days I had to stay home for a cold.

Get ready for some whinny good reading.

A collection of stories of horses and the lives they impacted, this book will make you laugh and cry. I know it sounds cliche, but it really did for me!

I am a horse owner, so I could totally relate to some of the life-lessons that were learned by the authors that penned some of these stories. As I said, some made me laugh and a few id make me cry...(I will let you figure out those.)

Even, if you aren't a horse owner, but are a horse lover, you could appreciate this book. Mainly, because lots of the story writers had that initial passion--love. Even if you aren't a "horse lover", I think you could still appreciate the lessons learned. The book reminded me of those human-interest type stores that the news stations put on once in a while that leave you feeling warm-fuzzies--that maybe there is still good that happens and the underdog does triumph.

As mentioned, the book is a collection of stories penned by several authors. Each story is not long in length, a few pages to several pages. The lengths would be good for a short read before bed or even something to read aloud at the dinner table for family time. Content is very family friendly.

Overall, 5 stars. Just a good book that is light and leaves you feeling good.

My daughter and I have thoroughly enjoyed each story in the book The Horse of my Heart!

horse of my heart

I confess that I may have shed a tear or two during many of the stories. Each story is about four or five pages, a pretty quick read. This has been a sweet book that Anna and I have enjoyed as we read a story or two a day during our school time. I think one benefit is that she is seeing that there is a lot more to owning a horse than she may have thought. She is also learning the tremendous joy that comes from having a horse that you have invested in and loved.

There are 32 sweet stories, each story is a heartwarming story about a horse owner. Many reflect on a long seeded desire to own a horse as a child to be realized as an adult. Many more take you into the heart of the horse and capture the relationship between the owner and the animal in a very intimate way.

If you know of anyone who is interested in horses, this really is a great book to jump start their passion for these amazing animals. While each story is written by a different author, and many different perspectives are highlighted, the general theme of each story is a love of horses and this is clear in every story!

Such beautiful and intelligent animals that I have always admired and so I chose to review this book.
As you begin each short story will touch your heart, and you might want to have the tissues handy. What a blessing in their lives these graceful animals are, well most are!
There is a magical connection between these animals and humans, and when these individual horses enter the human’s lives, it seems something wonderful is about to happen. Memories that follow them for the remainder of their lives, and they share them with us in such moving stories.
They seem to arrive and be there with these people when they need them the most, and have a calming and loving effect on them. This book is going to touch in special ways, and you will see God’s hand in this, he made these amazing animals. Once you open that first page and begin your journey, your going to want to keep reading on to the next and then the next.

I may not own my own heart but I love them and I have 2 that live just down the road from me. I visit them all the time, along with my dog. We have become such friends and they will always have their own stories in my heart.

Horses are an important part of almost every child's life, whether they are the loyal steed for a television or movie hero, or beautiful parts of the landscape as we travel down the road, or even the ponies we visit at the petting zoos.

This book includes a variety of stories, all with these noble animals. some of them are the means to teaching a lesson, or rescue those who saved them first. Each of these stories are true and their owners are quite often as inspiring as the horses. These stories are touching, renewing and show God's love for us by giving us these amazing animals on the earth.

You are hereby warned to have tissues available when you sit down to read this book. I've loved horses since before I could walk. I've worked with problem horses, trained green horses, retired elderly horses and loved each and every one of them. Each story gripped my heart with the tale. This is a book I will read again and will share with everyone I know that loves horses. My mother had a horse that showed up at the right time and helped her deal with Epilepsy and became a huge part of her healing. I had a horse that bonded with me, heart to heart. We even slept together in the stall when strangles when through the barn. He was my soul mate and I miss him terribly. Anyway, back to this book! It's well worth the five stars. If you get a chance to read it, do so. You'll feel a type of inner healing as you read the stories. It's a wonderful book to have and to share. I received an ARC through Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.

The Horse of My Heart by Callie Smith Grant for Revell Books

When four legs and two meet, when hair and manes combine, when hand touches forehead, that is when a friendship happens and life is a little bit sweeter.

Reading this book made my dream more epic, clear, huge and most of all…magical. And while I keep on begging and praying to have my own horse, I’ll watch the stamp of a hoof, toss of a head and a saddle being lifted up high onto the back of a majestic creature.

A lovely collection of chapter length short stories from various authors, telling of the horse that captured their heart.

As a lover of horses myself, I could totally relate. I grew up riding a clever little pony named Nikki, round around as a barrel with more speed and spirit than horses almost twice her size. She liked to work hard, and play hard, and had a personality all her own. She almost never did anything she didn't want to do. She had a way of getting anyone off, but nobody could be mad at her for long.

The authors share from their heart stories of the horse that gave them hope, helped them adjust to a new situation, face their fears and more.

Overall, this is an enjoyable read, easy to pick up and put down at will during a busy day. Would make a great gift for a horse lover, and is a fun book to share.

I have never been one of those horse fanatics for me the animal of heart is a dog. However I certainly would not turn down a horse if he or she followed me home. I had riding lessons when I was a child and I did develop a love of horses and a wish for a horse, but if someone offered me the choice of a horse or a dog it would always be the dog for me.

I enjoyed the stories in this book and I loved reading about all the positive experiences different people had with horses. I never really though of horses as prey animals because of their sizes, but the book is so right. I truly loved the heart warming stories in this book.

The Horse of My Heart: Stories of the Horses We Love, edited by Callie Smith Grant, is a collection of essays about women and their horses. I loved seeing all of the authors’ different perspectives and how horses play a part in their lives. One of my favorite stories was “The Art of the Who,” written by Sarah Parshall Perry, author of Sand in my Sandwich. The book is slightly reminiscent of a Chicken Soup for the Soul compilation. The authors have learned important life lessons from their experiences with horses, and through these beautiful essays, the authors teach these lessons to the readers.

This book is an anthology of personal stories written by private individuals about their horses. Most of the stories are warm, delightful and insightful. Any horse lover will love this book.
