Andrew Grey is one of those authors I just know is going to give me a sweet and touching story and let me escape into his world for a few hours.
Brendon is different and he knows it, he finished high school, college and got his masters and doctorate all by the age of 21. His description in the book of how he sees things in the world sums him up well :"I’ve discovered a lot of human communication is nonverbal, but it’s like I didn’t get the manual." He doesn't know why the head of the department seems to have it in for him, he doesn't have friends, so he's pretty surprised when hunky Josh shows an interest in him and despite himself he gets a boyfriend. Josh and Brendon are like night and day, Josh is an assistant football coach, very athletic and easy going, has a loving, if annoyingly pushy family. Brendon is an orphan, he's lonely and saying he is socially awkward is probably a generous description. He easily loses sight of everything around him when he is immersed in his research, what he lacks in interpersonal skills is more than made up for in intelligence. He also has never really had any kind of intimate or close relationship, so this is all new to him. It's cute how he googles what he should expect from his dinner date with Josh and he googles how love should feel. Josh is great, very patient with Brendon's idiosyncrasies and Brendon is good for Josh, showing his family what kind of man Josh really is. There really isn't any angst or drama in this novella, it's a feel good happy story, about two very different men finding someone they can love. My niggles, I would have loved a little more about Josh's family, did what Brendon say change how they act towards Josh? And in the very beginning of the story Brendon is wearing a t-shirt that gets him a lot of laughs and he mentions it was a gift from his sister, but a few pages later he tells Josh he is an only child.
Wow ... I really, really, really struggled with this one ... I made it to the 60% mark then just couldn't force myself to continue. This was classic genius & the jock trope … I'm not sure quite what Andrew Grey was trying to do with Brendon's character though ... Brendon wasn't quite high-functioning Asperger’s (although I suspect this is what he was supposed to be) ... he was definitely not autistic ... nor was he ADHD or a savant ... his character nearly met the absent-minded professor or mad scientist definition but not quite ... because of the amount of time I spent trying to either diagnose Brendon's disorder or 'correct' the mistakes Grey had made if the character was Asperger’s, I found myself becoming frustrated with the book … add in what was (to me) a cliché plot devise with the sophomoric departmental politics, & I just couldn’t finish the book. Authors who incorporate some form of disability into their characters have to be so very careful with their research because they are going to get readers like myself who have intimate knowledge of the disorder & will start picking holes in the book to alleviate their frustration with perceived errors. My star rating is completely subjective with this one … the writing style is good; spelling & grammar are top-notch but I just couldn’t get past the frustration over Brendon’s behaviour.
3.75* Its a favourite trope of mine , the geeky guy getting the hunky jock so I was looking forward to this one and I wasn't disappointed. Lightweight, easy read that wasn't over long and filled an afternoon nicely. Brendon's a genius and very literal in all senses of the word and Joshua's completely the opposite, sporty, hunky but very kind and sweet. For its type it works very well and there's some nice chemistry going on between the two of them. Bit of trouble in the wings with a nasty professor who I agree I would have liked to have seen get more of a comeuppance and some nice sexy moments. Not the most earth shattering story but sometimes you don't always want that. Rounded up but not quite 4 stars because I felt it slowed down a bit just before the end but it wasn't far off. Enjoyable.
I had a problem with this book... Brendon is a genius chem professor whose brilliant with anything that has to with science and teaching science. Interacting with people? Brendon is not so good at that. Actually, he's kind of really bad at it. Sarcasm escapes him, he doesn't get most humor, he doesn't read body language or facial expressions well and he doesn't get people in general. What's worse is that most people don't really understand Brendon either. It's a bit of a recipe for social disaster despite the fact that Brendon is really sweet in an absentminded professor way.
Josh is one of the coaches for the college's football team. He's big and brawny and an all around nice person. He's also quite taken with Brendon. The two o them are cute together in a very predictable nerdy twink meets brawny jock way.
So, if it was cute, albeit a lot of the same ol same ol, what was my problem? Well, I didn't feel like I was reading an Andrew Grey book. I felt like I was reading every book that's ever been written about the absentminded professor. It was very generic. Usually Andrew Grey books have a certain something that lets you know what author you're reading but this book had none of that. Too bad. I like this particular trope of the genius and the jock but this one didn't really do it for me.
This was a Cute, Angst free beautiful story about Brendon a young professor of science and Josh the tall dark and handsome assistant football coach.
Is this a date?"Brendon asked "Yes",Josh answered "According to the Internet, when you date some one,a kiss is usually expected.it comes at the end of the date, usually, but I don't think quibbling about it is necessary a-"......
Brendon is a the typical cute geek who is a virgin at it all and when fate has Josh "bumping" into him it goes from there, to his first kiss to first dates, meeting Josh family and amongst all that he has a million equations an formulas going threw his head.. And a science comp to organize..
Josh is there to teach him, to love him and show him a way to love and live life beautifully and to have fun and relax!!
"Your the first person to really kiss me, he answered turning a bit red,and then smiled."so no I've never done the dance with no pants
Loved this sweet and romantic easy book Perfect mood for it, fantastic ending :)
Highly recommended if your looking for something sweet and easy!!!
I have a weakness, okay, so I have many weaknesses, I'm a versatile girl after all ;). Anyway... I have a weakness for geeks, the socially awkward and oblivious ones. Add in a scientist and a chemistry one at that and that book has my name on it.
Brendon has always been on the outside looking in on life. Being smarter than most everyone he meets he's only had his work to keep him company. That is until he meets Josh, the assistant football coach. I liked Brendon and Josh together and I loved watching Josh teach Brendon about life and muddling through a new relationship - or in Brendon’s case his very first relationship. His first kiss. Meeting the parents. But also teach each other to stand up for themselves and each other.
Nick J. Russo was great as usual. There's a reason why he's on my short list of narrators where I don't need to sample the book before picking it up. I loved how he handled the obliviousness of Brendon and balancing Josh, he captured the essence of the characters in a really good way.
Organic chemistry was a low angst story about a chemistry professor and the football coach. It was sweet and funny and perfect when you want to dream away to college for a while.

This was a really cute little story about a young professor and the assistant football coach. As a story this was one of the nicest first timers I've read. It had some things that will put a few people off, but it's one of the easier stories.
Brendon is a geek and he starts off the story awkward and clueless to read life. He literally runs into Josh, the assistant football coach and afterwards the two go on their fist date. I did cringe during the first date. But they were sweet together and I really loved Brendon. He made me get all maternal and I thought he needed a good cuddle most of the time.
“According to the Internet, when you date someone, a kiss is usually expected. It comes at the end of the date, usually, but I don’t think quibbling about it is necessarily a—”
The relationship mixed well with the college story. I found myself thinking Josh was perfect and that he was possibly one of the nicest guys I have ever read about. Then we met his family in this and we got to see a completely different side of him. It was nice but I still wanted to punch him.
Spoiler
I would say this is a nice story. But if you want angst or a great deal of issues this would not be for you. There weren't many relationship issues and the couple would be a bit too sweet for some people.
Let me start by saying that I'm a HUGE Andrew Grey, but....
This novella just seemed to have a lot missing and the end seemed abrupt without really resolving anything except the MCs expressed their love for each other. I liked the premise, but it just seemed unfinished and I wanted more. More about the MCs, more about Josh's family - did Brendan go help with Gloria's friend? What happened to the DB department head? Did they move in? Get a dog? Did they win the charity contest? Did the research paper get published?

Confession: Ini buku pertama Andrew Grey yang gw baca! Dan gw baru selese baca YA-LGBT yang depressing maka cerita ini yang simple and easy tapi hot seperti hujan di musim kemarau, so refreshing!
On the surface, this may be a deceptively simple read, but what adds the depth is the characters and the way they interact. Brendon is, in many ways, the typical professor, and yet he is so much more than that. It is the same with Josh; if you look at him you see a jock who coaches college football, but when you start examining his actions and what he believes in, he is much more than the sum of his characteristics. And that is the true genius of this book. Just like "organic chemistry involves the scientific study of the structure, properties, and reactions of organic compounds and materials", this book, or rather its characters, are about attempting to understand each other and each other's reactions to all types of outside stimulus (life's events).
Brendon is a genius. With a doctorate completed at twenty-one, two years later he is an associate professor of chemistry at a local college. He understands his job, the formulas he works with, and the science behind them perfectly. The thing he has always had trouble with is people and interpersonal relationships. What this story is really about is his attempts to finally come to grips with them, and like many chemical reactions need a catalyst to make them work, something that kicks them into gear, so to speak, Brandon needs the same. He isn’t stupid, he just needs someone to point him into the right direction on his road to better understanding, and Josh turns out to be the perfect "catalyst" for this "experiment".
Josh, the college's football coach, has an undeniable interest in Brendon, and he is tremendously curious about what makes him tick. Just like when coaching he brings out the best in his players, he helps Brendon become more integrated into human society. Josh comes from a well-educated family, and many people, including his own father, underestimate him because he is "only" a coach. But it is what he loves, and what he is good at, and Brendon, as naïve as he is in many other respects, can see and accept that at face value.
These two men are so perfect for each other! I loved Brendon's bright-eyed curiosity about all the new things Josh teaches him from kissing to… more, just like he helps explain department politics and nastiness to Brendon. I adored Josh's loyalty and open-minded approach to Brendon, accepting him for who he is and managing to merge their lives all he same. If you like sweet romances, if you enjoy reading about two men who both excel at what they do but are somewhat quirky in their private lives, and if you're looking for a read that has a deeper meaning very cleverly woven in-between the lines, you will probably like this book as much as I did.
NOTE: This book was provided by Dreamspinner Press for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
I love nerdy, virginal characters who have a hard time navigating life and Brendon delivers on all of those fronts. I also love it when the bigger, stronger character comes in to sweetly sweep my nerdy boy off his feet, which Josh delivers on as well.
This is a fun, fluffy read. I had a couple of minor complaints, but on the whole I enjoyed the story.
Nick J. Russo once again delivers a sweet performance that kept me entertained and invested in the characters.
This is just sweet, cuddly, romantic fun.
Recommended.

I'm partial to atypical characters, and Brendon is as peculiar as they come. It's always exciting to find a character that is different and see how the author manages to incorporate his uniqueness into the story.
Besides Brendon being an only child, but at the same time to be having a t-shirt gifted by his sister :), I have only one small quibble: being different means that often people aren't knowledgeable enough to know how to deal with you. In this story Josh appeared to be the perfect fit because of his instant understanding how Brendon functioned. It suits the story, but isn't very realistic.
Since the book is very short, it doesn't allow Mr. Grey to explore more what it means to be in a relationship with someone like Brendon, but it's also not that important, because before anything else it's a beautiful love story that will leave you with a smile on your face.
To summarize, Organic Chemistry is a captivating and heartfelt read without being emotionally draining. Recommended!
One thing you can say about Andrew Grey’s writing: he doesn’t have a formula and every book is different from the others. The characters in Organic Chemistry don’t fit any mold. Well, one of them, Josh the college coach definitely fits the jock template but the other main character, Brendon is more elusive. At first I thought he was autistic, and I still think he is to some degree but that doesn’t define him. Sheltered? Yes, that, too. Genius, no sense of humor, unaware of social norms, all of that, but underneath there is a man to whom Josh is drawn and who has a loving heart waiting to be discovered. If you are a fan of The Big Bang Theory, think Jim Parson’s character Dr. Sheldon Cooper and you’ll be close. Loveable but you have to go at him his way.
Reading this book was a nice way of spending an hour or two.
It did take me a while to get into the book and I think I would have preferred to read a more typical story of a jock and a science geek i.e. someone geeky without the Asperger's (Asperger's being my diagnosis).
I wasn't totally on board with Brendan's character at first. I realise he was supposed to be socially inept but I found him very childlike and don't think the book explained enough about what attracted Josh to him in the first place (apart from his cute looks). I also found Brendan's explanations of his own behaviour or responses to be a bit 'lecture' like. However this changed towards the mid-point, as the character developed.
On the plus side, Josh was a really nice character and I appreciated the way he took things very slowly with Josh. He was a caring and supportive partner.
This just wasn't really for me, I suppose. Brendon went way beyond simply being socially awkward and into Asperger's territory. Which is fine, I've had students with Asperger's and I admire them and their families very much. But I don't necessarily want to read an erotic romance about them. Just having Brendon get so mad that he storms out of the car and calls Josh a butthead for 5 or 6 pages--and decides he really loves that word--made him seem so juvenile that I felt uncomfortable reading about them making up.
I understand he's an adult, he just frequently didn't seem like one, and it made me not enjoy reading his story.
There is just something about a nerdy character that I really enjoy and Brendon definitely fits that description. This is a very nice and fluffy feel good story.
Quindi fidati di me.”
I liked the characters, I just didn't feel the emotional connection between them. Where's the romance, the sizzle, like I'm used to in AG's books?
Plus, that has GOT to be the worst cover casting ever for our handsome jock character, Josh. A guy also known as "Freight Train." That dude posing as coach is nowhere near big enough to pull that off and looks nothing like the nickname would suggest. #CoverFail.
Brendon Marcus is the shy, reserved and naïve science geek. He’s a genius but he’s not very wise when it comes to love, or attraction. Josh Horton is the new assistant football coach. Tall, dark, handsome and much more comfortable in his own skin. Josh is openly gay, and it’s not the Brendon isn’t, he just doesn’t know how to be open about anything. Josh wastes no time asking Brendon out to dinner, and even less time kissing him.
This unlikely pair dive headfirst into a relationship that proves to be more challenging than either of them could have expected. Josh loves spending time with Brendon. He lights up the room when he’s in it, and the way he takes everything so literally makes Josh’s attraction to him even stronger. When Josh takes Brendon to meet his parents and they shower his young boyfriend with all the affection and praise Josh longs for, will it be the end of their budding romance just as it’s started?
I absolutely loved Brendon Marcus! He’s not very wise in the ways of the world and he takes everything so literally. The only thing that can pull him out of his on chaotic mind is Josh’s touch, his kiss. Josh is very patient with him teaching him how to love and loving him in return, unconditionally. They learn to be stronger together and apart by standing up for themselves, and each other. Their attraction is basic and beautifully written.
Fast paced read with a engaging storyline and realistic characters. If you like a HEA love story with some pretty steamy guy/guy action worked into the mix seamlessly, then this is a must read! I would expect nothing less from Andrew Grey. This one will stay qued on my kindle so I can visit these characters again, and again…….
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
I will say that this was overpriced for a novella, but decided to take a chance anyway.
With that said, I thought I was kind of disappointed. Seriously, Brendon is 23 years old and has to look up how to do things online--like how to go to dinner with someone? I understand that he's never had friends, but isn't it like a basic concept? He's a smart man, after all.
I do wish this was longer, because I wanted to know how life was before Josh came into the picture. How were holidays? What did he normally eat when he finally remembered? How did he interact with people, like at the grocery store or gas station?
Then here comes Josh barreling through his life. What about his life? Were his parents accepting after his visit? What did he see in Brendon at their first meeting? Were his players really okay with him being gay? How was the season? For him being a coach he wasn't really coaching much, from what we saw. Did Brendon come to the games to support Josh?
Did they come out at school? Did Brendon ever go visit Gloria?
Look at all those questions...
I felt like this was all about Brendon, but what did Brendon ever do for Josh? I guess I just didn't understand their relationship and it has nothing to do with their social standing.
Although I have a soft spot for genius and jock stories, I was slightly disappointed with this one. Brendon - the genius professor's character was unique, very naive and clueless with social interactions while Josh was your typical jock who is the third child from a family of overachievers. They were quite likeable and cute together. However, I found the story formulaic and a bit predictable. There was also a scene where Josh was telling Brendon to wait for the right time for their first time together. But when it came to that, it felt more like a diversionary tactic from their argument than "making love". The ending was your typical HEA, with nothing really exciting happening in between.
Yes, this book had the recipe for a cute and romantic genius and jock story, but it fell flat for me. Not one of Andrew Grey's better ones.
I think it's more of a 0.5 as ★ seems to be a little too generous.
Not my cuppa tea - at all. Second book from Andrew Grey, and second book I rate 1 star. I didn't like how the whole book seemed to be 90% about Brandon's intelligence, 10% about Josh's daddy issues. There wasn't any chemistry between the MCs, their whole relationship went way to fast to begin with and then was just to sappy.
I will try a 3rd and last book from this author to decide if he's going on my "no-go" list..
I have this problem with the "I am super clever but I don´t know about human relations" characters... it´s very difficult to me to read them because the innocent of their self it could be annoying.
In this one, it is posible to see an evolution and this character grows in this emotional side , but still it was a bit dificult to asimilate some scenes.
The other main character trying to describe how he must feel to know if he was or not in love.... disturbing .
