Forgotten #2

Remembered

Rate this book
Rebecca Finner was desperate to know her past. But knowing her past may not be enough to survive her future.

Saved as a young girl by the enigmatic Lord Marchant, Rebecca Finner has watched him from afar for years, meeting him only by chance when he's brought much needed supplies to the medical clinic where she works as a healer.

Lord Leander Marchant is one of the Infinite, a race of immortals that drink blood to survive and thrive off the human population that live on their island in the Pacific Ocean.

Humans are raised in isolation, taught to adore their betters, to die a good death in service to them and if Rebecca had her way, she'd happily open a vein for Lord Marchant.

Little does she know that danger swirls around him, that the Infinite scheme and plot for his demise and that knowing him may not bring her safety but death.

Caroline Hanson grew up in California and moved to London in order to dance and go to pubs. Eventually, she matured enough to marry and imported an Englishman, returning to the United States.

After passing the bar, she had two children and now tries to parent, read, write and play tennis. She's heard rumors that other mothers clean and cook but is putting in serious effort to make sure those rumors don't reach her family.

Caroline grew up listening to Brit pop and reading about vampires. As a teenager her favorite authors were Anne Rice and Jude Deveraux. Now she loves Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Laura Kinsale, Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase, Nalini Singh and JR Ward-- that's the short list.

She is also the proud owner of a WWJD t-shirt, (What Would Joss do?) which she hopes is apparent in her books.

She loves to hear from fans and her second book in the Valerie Dearborn Series, Love is Fear, will be published in December 2011.

A free short story called Bewitching the Werewolf was released in September on Smashwords.

The first book was better. This had a totally different feel because the entire thing was about Rebecca's past. It definitely explained some things, but Rebecca's feelings towards Leander make less sense to me now. He did help her out a few times, but he wasn't nice or charming. I don't get why she was so obsessed with him.

The whole plot leading to her near death wasn't nearly as dramatic or devious as I thought it would be. It wasn't bad, but I expected there to be more to the story. Also Rebecca and Leander's relationship was not as involved as expected. Based on the intensity of their feelings in the first book, I assumed they spent more time together before she got amnesia.

I'll read the third one whenever it comes out, but I won't be anxiously waiting for it either.

This second book in the series does not disappoint. 'Forgotten' left us with a cliff hanger and be warned that this will do the same but truly there is no other way to maintain the tension in both the book and the two leading characters, and rest assured, we do get our answers. We get answers and we get more questions and I can't wait to see where it all ends.

The world-building is novel and more than a little macabre. It is a combination of old world living standards and the new and it is disturbing. In cutting themselves off the vampires have ensured their food supply but also stunted the growth of worldly knowledge much to the detriment of both the humans and themselves. The ensuing isolation has enforced delusions of power and grandeur.

The author has created a very nice twist to the vampire legend further dehumanising these creatures to the point that we have to wonder at times at Rebecca's fascination. Leander is brutal, cruel and single-minded but underneath we do sense something and being the perverse lovers of romance that we readers are, we hope she will be the one to make a difference.

Rebecca on the other hand is a strange mixture of weakness and strength, acceptance and rebellion but like Leander there is something in her that holds us enthralled, perhaps even the fact that she stands out when she is so ordinary and it gives us a sense of power to know someone can do that. The sexual tension is intricate and chilling, constant on her part and forbidding on his. Yet his very determination to avoid her is the aphrodisiac that draws her to him.

As you can see I am a very big fan of this writer. She has the ability to bring us characters that make a connection despite their questionable behaviours. Leander is intelligent and very powerful but yet he fails to take action when he should and misreads obvious situations. He thinks naively his position is enough to keep control of the blood-thirsty (literally) world he inhabits and this lends him humanity even if Rebecca pays the price. In this novel she has 'Remembered' what she had forgotten - what next?

I read it in one day. My eyes hurt. Yes, we all know how it's going to end. It's a romance trilogy. Romances are always more about the journey than the destination.
