The strange thing is, the one he’s falling in love with remains a mystery, hiding her face and name in the messages she sends from behind her computer. Greer.. the most hillbilly a**hole in the Porter Family!

I'm guessing the heroine here is HOLLY! *crossfingers!*

description

EDITED
4. stars!

I liked that Greer is arrogant, grumpy fart. He's the "what you see, is what you get" kinda guy, no pretend what-so-ever and I appreciate that about him. In the past, I saw him as this hot grouchy ass who doesn't have any filter in his mouth but throughout the story... well he still is an ass but with a big golden heart.

Holly on the other hand is a lil weakish doormat but at the same time have some fire goin' in her that put Greer in his good old place. Both main characters balance out which was good in my opinion.

The story had some ups and downs, there were times I couldn't put it down and had to stay up til 4 am and few moments in the story were I kinda scroll through and just didn't give rat ass about it. Quite predictable but since this author knows how to write, she still brought me to lala land of Holly and Greer.

Overall its everything I expected! We pretty much knew the premise of the series. Its linked to The Last Rider Series, so we know its goin to be somewhat the same content as her previous books. We knew Holly was the heroine for Greer since it was a lil obvious in the past books in the series. It has a solid story with a well balance characters, few emotional scenes, a lil dash of suspense that made me thinking and some good olde sex.. (though I gotta be honest, the sex scenes wasn't scorching hot like some of JB previous books- but still its Greer. So it still kinda worked!)

Guess the only thing that irked me and seems like did not explain well in the book is how Greer develop feelings towards Holly? I mean they've been living together for years then all of the sudden he's inlove with her? It didn't make any sense and somehow did not convince me. I guess I missed that explanation somewhere.. lol.

Overall its a solid 4 stars for me! Gotta love that we get a snippet of everyones lives.. pretty sure I'm gonna miss them when the series end.

IT'S LIVE! http://amzn.to/2ogQ3Qj

Standing His Ground is the second in the Porter Brother's Trilogy and follows Greer Porter, the reckless brother that most people perceive as idiotic. But he's far from stupid, which is something Holly ends up learning the hard way when she tries to pay him back for being so cruel to her.

So this book is a little hard for me to review because while I liked the overall story, I didn't always like how it was told. Greer and Holly were interesting to read about and they certainly had my attention for the majority of the book, but I didn't always understand their relationship. At time it felt like we were being told how they felt about each other, but not shown. So I honestly didn't see too much of a connection between them.

And on top of that some things just didn't fully add up for me when it came to Greer. I think I just needed more of his POV to understand some of his actions and without that I was left confused at parts. Again, we were being told things that we didn't see so it just didn't make much sense for me.

Bottom line, I still enjoyed this story even though I had a few issues with it. And I would still recommend it, and all of Jamie Begley's other books. This is the second in the trilogy but you would have no problem reading it before Tate's story.

Erm where was the chemistry, the love? I sure didn't feel it even though it was obvious I was supposed to. Six years she was pining for him while he was with ow and then suddenly out of nowhere he decides to marry her. As for her, pining after a guy who ignored her unless he was being cruel to her was just disturbing! All the excuses she made for his cruel attitude and defending him to Diamond was not sweet to me but actually sickening. She was too pathetic for him....still waiting for JB to write a stronger heroine like Sex Piston who was the only one so far not totally succumbing to usual pining doormat female leads JB seems to prefer writing about. Both the characters were boring and I almost DNF.

Better than I expected!

Frankly, I didn't expect much form this book. Dunno why, I just didn't.

Anyway, I ended up falling for Greer and respecting Holly's decisions (most of the times). It's a book worth reading, especially if you've read other books from this author. She's awesome!

UPDATED because this book gets better every time I listen....

I don’t know what it is about this book – if it’s the country boy attitude of Greer, or how sweet the love is once it blooms – but this one resonated in my SOUL. I loved nearly everything about it and ended up buying it.

“This is all because I chose a daisy as an icon? What would have you done if I had chosen a rose?”

“Then you would have been lying in a bed of roses… Loving me won’t be a merry-go-round, but I can swear I’ll go to bed every night and wake up every morning by your side… I swear I’ll make it worth it… I love you.”

Greer Porter (30-ish, weed growing jackass, hillbilly) has held a grudge against Holly (28, works for Diamond) ever since the Porters learned she had kept Logan's parentage a secret (Knox’s Stand, Book 3). It's been six years since the truth came out and he's still making her life hell.

Greer is an admitted asshole, but there's a part of him that he keeps hidden. You can't always judge someone based on what they show on the surface.

He was everything she didn’t want in a man and everything she did want. He was strong, didn’t take anyone’s bull, loved Logan as much as she did, and had never treated her like a body with big boobs. However, he did have a lot of faults. He sold pot, had a vicious temper, and he didn’t care when he made her cry.

Too bad for Holly - she's actually in love with mean bastard. Lord only knows why, because that man has done and said things to hurt her that even made my cold heart clench!!

Things get crazy when Greer decides he wants to get married and one of the candidates is a woman he met online. On top of Greer’s search for a good cook wife, Greer and Holly have to deal with someone from her past, the Hayes & Colemans, Greer's jealous exes, and the death bells that keep tolling. Of course, you'll get a HEA out of it.

Every month I lived with you, I fell deeper in love….I was so lovesick for you that I couldn’t work up the courage to tell you…. I deserve the blessings God has given me, but I don’t deserve you….. You don’t have to marry me today, but I’m praying you will. I will be waiting for you with my mama’s wedding ring in my pocket.

SEX: I loved it and was definitely hoping for an entire book of it!! Their first time is at 51% and it’s one of JB’s better scenes. They have a really sweet love making session that will make you slap your partner upside the head for not giving it to you that way.

HOLLY: Some people might think Holly is weak, but she’s really strong. She continues to take the abuse from Greer because she doesn’t want to lose Logan. Holly did get on my nerves over the hell she gave Greer on his pot growing activities, but I guess I’d probably have had the same problem. It’s a dangerous profession.

GREER: I fucking love this man. It’s going to take you a while to get there because Greer is definitely a bastard for the first half of the book. He said and did some really mean things to Holly and I probably would have stabbed him for it. When I figured out why he was the way he was, it all made sense!!! I also understand backwoods country boys. If I didn't know, love, recognize men like this, I would have hated Greer and written him off. MOST of you will hate him for the things he does, but you have to really be ok with a man that keeps all the good things about himself hidden.

LAUGHS: I laughed at sooooo many things in this book. For me, it was a good combo of comedy, emotions, angst, healing, love, and some other crazy ass shit.

AUDIO: Elizabeth Heart narrates. She narrated most of The Last Riders books and I really like her. I loved her as Greer in this book. She was perfect.

"why are they tearing the barn down?"
"they're replacing a bad memory with a good memory."
"tearing a barn down is a good memory?"
"It is when you're not doing it alone."

😭 😭 😭 That resonated with me so much. There's so much that I connected to in this book.

ANIMALS: Some chickens die a terrible death, but the dog lives. I’ll never understand why JB loves to kill off the animals.

CROSSOVER: The first scene in this book is one where Greer attends a church meeting where they have the snakes bite Beth (Razer’s Ride).

TRIGGERS: There’s a pregnancy loss in the book.

EPILOGUE: The epilogue really shows you who Greer is and why he does the things he does. I fell in love with him so much just from the epilogue alone. I wish we had gotten more of it.

Going by how Greer has been treating Holly in Cash's & Tate's books, I'm looking forward to a good lengthy grovel and chase from Greer. And of course, Diane getting a nasty put down. I'm also pissed with Cheryl- I have no issues with her screwing around but the woman has to know there's a Sis-code as well! She can go around screwing all the single men for all I care; I can even digest her sleeping with Tate (somehow!), but sleeping with Cash was really low of her! A woman who has been cheated on by her husband wouldn't want to hurt other females by sleeping with their men! Isn't she putting other women in the same situation she has been through, much less her own female friends?! Quite an ironic character!

Danger Will Robinson, Jamie Begley’s collection is on Kindle Unlimited, and like a lemming I’ve gone down The Last Riders hole. I am happy to report there are no overly descriptive sex scenes with other women in this one. Baby steps.

Color me surprised when after reading Keeping What’s His: Tate where the hero needs to be neutered this is a three star almost four. Greer is hysterical!

In Standing His Ground, Begley presents the worst Porter brother which is saying something as they are all pretty terrible. He shot a man in cold blood in the last book which the villain deserved, but it took a lot of lying to get the unrepentant Greer off the hook. Greer the hero is absolutely awful in so many ways: mean, rude crude, social unacceptable not to mention obnoxious AND and cheap as hell. He was also hysterically gruff, protective, slightly mystical, and when he admits his feelings I fell hook, line and sinker. He’s still rude crude, social unacceptable not to mention obnoxious AND and cheap but has left mean behind.

The heroine combines meek and strong in some ways and puts up with his horribleness because she wants to be near the H’s nephew, and she’s in love with the big lug. Despite his cruel words to her he’s watched out for her and she appreciates his family loyalty. You either buy it or not.

I laughed and/or chuckled at some of his antics once he decided to not be so cruel.

He informs his confused family it is time for him to marry…
“Fine.” Greer rose from his chair to walk back and forth across the room as everyone stared at him closely. It wasn’t often that Greer was at a loss for words. “I’ve decided it’s time for me to get married.”

You could hear a pin drop in the room. The only sound that could be heard was Logan playing his video game.

Rachel was the first one to find her voice. “Please don’t tell us you’re marrying Diane.”

“Maybe. I haven’t made my mind up yet.”

His three choices are his skanky unfaithful off/on girlfriend, a woman he barely knows and his secret email buddy (the heroine). His reasoning for his selections is a little sketchy.

**************************************
Greer rolled his eyes as if Tate was the one being ridiculous. “There are three women I can see myself married to. I wanted your advice as to who I should pick. I can see you’re not going to be any help.”

“Who’s your second choice?”

“Jo.”

“Jo?” Rachel asked, shocked.

“You know, Jo Turner.”

“I know who she is. I’m friends with her.”

“I know. I figured you could put in a good word for me.”

Cash put a restraining hand on Rachel’s leg. Holly watched as she tried to control her temper.

“I didn’t even know you were dating her. I’m going to kick your ass if you’ve been messing around with Diane and dating Jo at the same time.”

“Cool down. I haven’t asked her out yet.”

“I don’t understand …”

“I’m attracted to her, she’s pretty, and she has that new tow truck. Shit like that comes in handy.”

*************************************

“That leaves the other two. Rachel, you talk to Jo and feel out if she would be willing to go out with Greer.”

“You want me to be the one to talk her into going out with him?” Rachel’s hair practically stood on end.

“You want him married to Diane?”

“I’ll call her tonight.”

The heroine has been his unknown dating correspondent and there are a couple of surprises I don’t want to spoil in the romance. They get together and there is a sea change in the H’s treatment of the heroine. His negotiation for her engagement ring is pretty entertaining as “shame” is not a concept he experiences and his ability to bargain comes in handy.

Shade, Beth, Lily, Viper, Winter and an unbelievably reformed Cash make brief appearances and they there are in the context of putting the H in a better light. The aforementioned verbal abuse by the H and a sad fail of the suspense/murder portion of the story were fails for me. However, the slight mystical element the Porter family has which Greer uses to great effect, and some incredibly romantic sweet gestures by Greer outweighed the negatives for me.

There are a few moments that are heartbreaking , but the story pulls through for a HEA.

As much as I hated Tate's book, I want to read the last, Claiming the Enemy: Dustin just to get more of Greer and Holly.

UPDATE: Reread 16 February 2021
---------------------------

Rereading the author's books in the order indicated by her while I wait for Gavin's third book.

=============================

-----------
The author knew how to preserve the very peculiar characteristics of the hero and also show the more sensitive side of him.
Our heroine as all prior is a doormat and too good to be real.
The relationship with the members of the motorcycle club's depth and the hero's family is going to have to get used to the show of support and their friendship.
Funny scenes and also many emotional scenes.
In the end it was a good read.

Highlights:

"Kentuckygirl: What do you do for a living? Sharpshooter: You first… Anything that involves law enforcement? Kentuckygirl: I’m an IT manager. You? Sharpshooter: Self-educated botanist."

"Holly saw Greer climbing out of Diane’s car. He had stayed the night with her again."

"She had learned as soon as she had moved in with the Porter family that Greer used any and each opportunity to use his sarcasm on her."

"Woman, why do you have to make everyone so fat? Is that how you plan to catch a husband? Make men so fat they can’t run away from you?”

“There isn’t a woman alive who can pull one over on me,” he bragged.

“Woman, you won’t know what you’re capable of until you fuck me. I’ve been known to make blind women see.”

“Woman, I’m going to send you where no man has sent you before.”

“You wanted me, but you didn’t mind getting your rocks off with Diane, or any other woman whose panties you could talk your way into.”

I have never been a fan of The Porters except Rachel they always rubbed me the wrong way. I read Tate story and I started to liked them but reading Greer story I absolutely love them. They really are a great family, when they used to give Rachel so much shit I couldn't stand them but you realise they had her best interest at heart. They really are great men and brothers. I love this story with Greer and Holly and was hoping Greer would get his stick out of his ass to see what is in front of him with Holly. She's such a loving girl. Another great read from Jamie.

Love Greer

He seems to be a big jerk, but he has one of the biggest hearts out there. He has his reasons he don't like to be touched. He needs to save his strength as it will be needed when danger comes.

Greer and Holly

This one hit the spot! Greer is such a hoot. A redneck hillbilly to the core. Holly is Diamonds secretary. This one had me laughing. The prologue showed a connection between Beth and Greer - I would have liked more of that but it was never revisited . Diamond and Knox were around a lot in this one which I enjoyed.

Standing His Ground has blown me away. I knew it would be explosive because of the sparks this couple has thrown off since day one but man… It was SO. DAMN. GREAT. So much depth, all sorts of feels, such thoughtful storytelling… Definitely one of my favorite Jamie Begley books to date!

Greer, Greer, Greer… I was already crushing on you before but now I am head over heels in love with you! You are #2 only to Cash in my book! You were sweet, charming, romantic, protective & clever but the most AMAZING part was that you were all of those things without losing your famous a**hole persona. You were still you & that was straight-up sexy. But I am so sorry about what happens after you use your power… *zips lips*

Holly, woman… LOVED what you & Diamond started! My heart broke for you with every insult & sneer that was slung your way but I admired the way you dealt with it all. You were so strong, caring & selfless. I loved your relationship with Logan & when you decided to go all in with Greer. You balanced each other out & it was beautiful & fun to see your story unfold.

There were so many memorable scenes in this book! The house meeting, the ugly cry (OMG, I was devastated!), the way Greer took care of Diane & the conversation Greer had with Knox at the end were all definitely highlighted in my kindle but the very BEST ones were the out-of-body experience Holly & Greer felt in the field of daisies & the barn scene with the whole Porter family. The field scene gave me goosebumps; being so sexy, magical & meaningful. And that barn scene… I LOVED how therapeutic it was for EVERYONE.

Have to admit… I was a bit irked that daisies were the flower of choice because I associate them with one of my least favorite characters, Bliss, & her daisy chain but I’m choosing to replace the bad memories with the good ones because Greer & Holly’s daisies were fantastic!

Although it was hard to leave some loose ends lying around, I’m excited to find out how things are going to play out between the Porters, Hayeses, Colemans, Curt Dawkins & Luke Baxter in Claiming His Enemy. (At least I think they’re all linked together somehow because of events that happened in this book.) I feel lots of trouble brewing!

Very much looking forward to the next installment in this massive Jamie Begley saga! Not sure if it’ll be Rider’s Revenge (the prologue of which was included at the end of this book) but I really hope it is! :)

“Standing His Ground: Greer” is the story of Holly and Greer.

The ahole of the Porter brothers finds his soulmate in the woman he loves to rile up.
Holly was been in his home, taking care of his nephew, but they do not get along. He decides to get married, and one of his unlikely candidates is a stranger who is friends with him online..
As he continues to aggravate her, until secrets are revealed and we realize people are not what they seem..

There is a lot of family love and humor in this one. You start off disliking Greer but kinda get endeared to him by the end. Holly is a sweetheart. There is a lot of drama in the second half mixed with tragedy, but ends on a happy note.

Enjoyed it.

I really try with JB's books. But I think this will be my last book with her.
I've read the different series from JB, but I find that each book I read from here is the same formula.
Man is a manwhore who sleeps around...
Woman is a pushover with no backbone...
Woman falls in love even though man is mean and sleeps around...
Get the point? I mean there is a such thing as VARIETY! The only book I've read from this author that I absolutely adored was Sex Piston. She wasn't a push over and gave as good as she got.
Now to the review of this book:

Holly & Greer have a volatile past. She feels guilt for keeping Dustin's son from him and Greer isn't one to miss a step when it comes to blaming Holly. Although Greer has no qualms showing his dislike for Holly, she pines away for him FOR 6 YEARS! I'm sorry but Holly must be a masochist if she's in love with a man who hates her and isn't afraid to let the world know.

When Greer decides to settle down and marry to have kids (this is the part I just rolled my eyes and knew the book was going downhill) he doesn't know that one of his candidates is Holly aka KentuckyGirl. When he does find out about Holly catfishing him he basically blackmails her into marrying him. BUTTTT how can it be blackmail when for some ungodly reason Holly is in love with him?!?

Where was the love between these characters? I don't believe for one second that Greer actually loved Holly. What about passion? If this is the quality the rest of book JB is putting out then I'm done. I honestly don't think I will pick up another book from this author. It's gotten to the point where I just skim through her books now because she just ruins the characters for me. It's as if the author thinks "Oh no this female character is showing some independence, time to knock her down a notch".

Gotta admit, absolutely love his bargaining ways!! Greer is definitely not as stupid as people think, loved his plan for Holly even though he’s definitely such an ass during it!
I like the Porter Family & their shenanigans, kooky reasonings, and loyalty & fierceness!!
He’s definitely headstrong & an assh*le, but protective and does have a big heart for others that he just can’t show, but he is helpful when he can be (the tears OMG!!!!)

Holly can get a good insult in every now and then 😮😂 “Did you find Kentuckygirl on inmates-searching-forlove .com? With your personality, the only woman stupid enough to marry you is a lifer.”
Plus, don’t mess with the women when they are in major pissed-off mode and laying down the law🤨😁😉

OMG, this is the best description I’ve ever heard and agree with 10,000%!!!! “Me and church have a love/hate relationship. I love God, but I hate the hypocrites who go to church every Sunday.”⛪️

Diamond to Holly: “I’ve told you a thousand times that I forgive you. You’re my bestest friend in the world. If the zombies take over, you and Logan will be with Knox and me on our island. I haven’t even made that offer to my own sister.” ❤️🤭🙂

Tidbits that amuse me:
-mollycoddling -numbskulls -sit a spell
-conceited dimwit -Bible thumpers
-reap what he sowed -braggart
🌼“A daisy couldn’t bloom in winter”
“That’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. It would blind a dead man.”
💡There’s more than one way to skin a cat. Either scare it out of his skin, or give them something else to wear.🐈‍⬛
-A fulminating glance
🤭😆Pa always said that anyone who listens to gossip is an old woman or a b¡tch. You hiding a pussy behind those jeans? - awesome insult

🪦RIP dear little one🥀 and any other innocent soul✨
The Porters are part of the MC family💖 Even Shade was there to lend a shoulder of support 💕

🤭There appears be a proper multi-series order…oopsie🙃
Oh well, I’m enjoying it💋

"The sign he was looking for was nowhere around. A daisy couldn't bloom in winter."

I'm always happy to one-click on a Jamie Begley novel. She is a must buy for me. I'm invested in her book world and all her connected storylines.

I have gotten to know the Potter brothers from prior glimpses in the Last Riders books. The Potter brothers don't like the lifestyle the Last Riders have. They believe in having just one woman to share their life with. Despite their differences, The Last Riders and the Potters are civil with each other, especially since Rachel, their sister became Cash's woman.

To my shock, the book begins with Greer deciding he needs to settle down. He wants a wife and he wants children. He has narrowed his list down to three women. The whole family is in agreement that the woman he has had an on and off relationship with since high school is not the one for him. Jo is on his list too but Greer really likes KentuckyGirl, his online friend. She is smart, seems sweet and they get along well. She also likes daisies and Greer believes a daisy is the sign of his one true love.

Holly has been living with the Potters for the last six years ever since Logan moved in with them. Holly loves Logan as her own child. She also has developed feelings for Greer. She knows he blames her for keeping Logan apart from their family. He doesn't hesitate to let her know everything he dislikes about her. Too bad you can make your heart fall in love with the right person sometimes.

It was hard to like Greer when he was being an obnoxious mule. He treated Holly in an awful way. I wanted to give him a piece of my mind. I knew there was more to him but he only showed his worst side to her. Luckily, as the story unfolds we get glimpses of his hidden nature making him more likable.

As always with a Jamie Begley book, I was able to enjoy the story. It had many Last Rider cameos as well as great banter between them and the Potter siblings. I laughed and I cried too. So why wouldn't I give it a higher rating? Well, I thought their declaration of love came out of nowhere. I understand that Holly has loved him for a while but Greer changed from hating her to loving her the next second. I would have like to see some major groveling from him. Other than that, I have no complaints.

Cliffhanger: No

4.5~

I adore this book even if I was a little confused up until the 60% mark. But just keep reading and it will all be explained in the end. Also, don't forget that this is a Jamie Begley book it means that there will be some action, a little (but powerful, like I teared up kind of) angst and the other woman before the main characters get together. Don't let Greer's character get to you. He might be an asshole at first but you'll see the real him towards the end. Actually around the time he started being "nice" I was really confused and thought that it might just be due to poor execution, but as the secrets get revealed, it becomes clearer. Holly is aweeesssooomeee! I didnt get why she loved Greer but I thought how lovely it was that she loved him as an asshole, of course she'll love him more as he shows his true colours. I love that she might be "weak" but she fought her battles. This family and their friends are so tight and you can just see how they love each other. The ending was so sweet especially Greer's p.o.v and the little explanation from Holly's p.o.v. That's when it becomes crystal clear for me. And that part about how in the future he might end up in-laws with Knox? How cool would that be? Awesome book, sexy when needed and peppered with hilarity. I can't wait to read Rider and Jo's book and based off that sneak peak at the end, the Last Rider's are acting as matchmakers.

I kinda really liked this. Greer was a grouchy jerk but he was also a hoot. We all know there's no love lost between him and Holly but he has his reasons. And when he told his family his plans for finding a wife I cracked up. I loved it.

The Porter's are a riot together. But they're also tight and extremely loyal. In part due to how strict their father was and also because of their shared ancestral superpowers. Begley could have easily gone into cheesytown with the Porter's gifts. But I was diggin' it. I always have. Ever since Rachel introduced us to them in Cash's Fight.

I liked Holly too but I thought Greer was the real star of the show. I'm looking forward to Dustin's book. Well done.

The long awaited story of Greer and Holly is finally here!

This one has to go up there with Shade (my favourite).

The back and forth banter was very amusing and the couple themselves were great! Loved how the last riders were included as well.

I really don't know what to think about the author, sometimes it feels like she hates the women in her books. The book wouldn't be so bad if we take the first half of it out, if we just consider the second part, it doesn't look so bad, but the first part, I just don't get. I mean, you have a guy that makes you cry, makes you afraid of him, takes every opportunity to hurt and humiliate you and the heroine's response is to fall in love with him? If I was her friend I would have sent her to therapy and kept her away from him. In the second part he acts a little better, and he even seems almost like a good guy, I mean, in other books in the same universe we have already seen that Greer has his moments, but still, I can't find anything that justifies what he did at the beginning.

I'm so invested in this word that I just couldn't miss one of the books, and like I say, if I could pretend that the first part never happened, it could almost be good, but I just hate the whole situation, how a woman can be so masochist and let herself be manipulated that way. What really bothers me about this book is how it romanticizes abuse, that is something that shouldn't be allowed. Of course, all the alpha men in the universe say how bad is for a man to hit a woman and that nothing justifies beating a woman, but emotional and psychological abuse also exists, and it's used a lot by some of those men.
