Two broken hearts collide on the path to redemption …
After being given to a wealthy man in a faro game, Gillian Netty Stone flees Virginia for the safety of Independence, Missouri. On the edge of civilization, the town borders a vast prairie, and the promise of freedom for so many—including Gillian. But trouble always has a way of intruding, and she is on the run again, sneaking aboard a stranger’s wagon, as he prepares to join a group of settlers heading west on the Oregon Trail.
Cole Clarkson is stunned to find a young woman in his wagon, hiding amongst crates of provisions. Being with Gillian reminds him of the past and all that he’s lost—a family he will never see again. Opening his heart is far too great a risk, but the winsome brunette breaks through each of his defenses, weakening his resolve to never fall in love again.

DNF 48% there were hints of something good but the baby thing ugh seriously Gillian?! Yes absolutely rescue a baby but be realistic about your ability to care for it when you yourself are currently entirely dependent on a stranger's charity! I just cannot. Which is a shame cos I was really enjoying the sexy grumpy sunshine slightly bratty teasing :).
Adventure that wasn't planned - hiding in a covered wagon to try to escape before she is found and murdered. Poor Gillian - she has been on the run and hiding for over a year, since her father lost her in a game of faro to a lecherous old rich man. Now she's hiding from a team of bad guys that her friend has stolen from and hidden the papers in her bag...and then given up her name, just before they shot her. Now she's framed for the murder of her friend and has to escape.
Seems there's nothing but trouble ahead for Gillian as she convinces Cole that she would be a help to him along the trail and begs him to let her stay in his wagon until they reach Denver City.
There are twists and turns throughout the story and it made it one of my favorites in this series!
I must say this novel was thoroughly enjoyable. The author put you in the year 1859 very easily with her descriptive prose.
Gillian Stone smuggles herself in a wagon leaving for Denver. It is part of a large wagon train heading West she hides aboard Cole Clarkson's wagon and when he discovers her she convinces him to let her stay.
Although much older than Gillian they each have suffered many family traumas.
This author very finely tuned her characters and you fall in love with them. Her descriptions of western travel as part of a wagon train are so vivid they put you in the time and place.
I gave this book ***** and would highly recommend it to all readers.
