Lauren Moore and her friends were no strangers to fantasy. They’d grown up lounged around her uncle’s an intrepid group of adventurers capable of dealing with any situation – no matter where, when, or how fantastic the encounter might have seemed to someone with no experience with role playing games. As much as they loved Jack Moore and the games that served as their go-to escape from reality, all the time they’d spent gaming together would seem like nothing as they embarked on their latest adventure. Of course, it might have been different if they’d been given the chance to prepare... Or at least been given a choice...
Carrie Baize was born in Santa Rosa, and has lived most of her life in California's Central San Joaquin Valley. She graduated from C.L. McLane High School and continued her education at Fresno City College. She is an avid role player and has spent a great deal of time in a number of fantasy worlds... some well-known, and some of her own design.
She credits her parents with her love of the arts and her father, particularly, for her love of role playing and fantasy world creation.
Carrie is blessed with a family who, although scattered across the United States, are incredibly supportive and truly believe in her ability to make her dreams come true. She lives in the foothills above Fresno with her husband, youngest daughter, rescue chihuahua and shepherd-mix granddog.
I really wanted to like this book as a slightly different take on one of my absolute favorite series of books "The Guardians of the Flame" by Joel Rosenberg. Unfortunately, in every place Rosenberg succeeded in his story, this one rather failed. Even the "twist" only took a few moments to suss out what was really happening. Not a terrible book for a "self insert" gamer into the game world story... but... not quite as high as I'd call "good", either.
You don't have to be into RPGs to enjoy this book. I'm not, and I did. Lauren and her friends, veteran gamers, find themselves in a world that has, up till now, only existed when they were gaming at Lauren's uncle's house. Maybe Lauren shouldn't have swerved to avoid the unicorn in the road. ??????
