A starlet gets stranded in a snowstorm trying to run away from her life and is rescued by a reclusive writer trying to forget a lost love by living in isolation.

The stranded in a blizzard lesbian romance has been done before and more effectively. Gerri Hill's Snow Falls is excellent and Trin Denise's Red Hot, Stone Cold has a lot going for it. I can't say the same for Snow Angel.
This is a novella so there is less time to develop a back story or flesh out the main characters and still create some sort of entertaining plot. Insta-love is a reality in lesbian romance novels but Snow Angel takes speed of connection to a new high, or low depending on your view of the book.

The stranded starlet, Ellie, comes across as cold and rude to her rescuer during the first half of the novella. She is unlikeable. Maggie seems earnest and somewhat enthralled by this beautiful woman who insults her and mopes about wishing she could leave for her friend's cottage. Ellie also makes it clear her television success hinges on not revealing her attraction to women.

Then out of the blue, wham bam I'm in love with you Ma'am? The second half of the book is a series of sex scenes with over the top statements like;

" She'd never been kissed so vehemently before" (loc. 902-902)

No plot from the moment they lock lips, just vehement terms of endearment. So much melodrama. I can't recommend this book.

I was all set to give this 4 or 5 stars. I love celebrity stories and I love recluse stories, so the two together work really well for me. The characters were clearly drawn, they were slowly warming up to each other. Then at the 57% mark, they completely go against character and the whole rest of the book didn't work for me. But I liked it a lot before then, which is why I'm giving it 3 instead of 1 or 2 stars.

Ummm...I'm a little bit unsure on how to review this book. So I think I'll break it down into sections.

Section 1 - The Good
I actually enjoyed this novel in the beginning until about half-way through. The story was coming together nicely, the two main characters were well described and being given the proper time for effective development, and the brimming-under-the-surface attraction was palpable but not overwhelming. The struggles each character fought with were relatable, making it easy to follow and grow with the characters themselves as they delved deeper into their true feelings, both in themselves, as well as with others.

Section 2 - The Bad
Once the romance kicked in, my interest wavered and had difficulty keeping alive. I'm a big sucker for romance novels, especially of the lesbian persuasion, but this romance just didn't quite cut it. For one, the two characters were all of sudden in love. Like just one page after talking about dinner, That and I felt that there was entirely too much repetition - in dialogue, in narrative, all around. There were also a few key phrases that I couldn't take seriously, such as I just...I don't even know.

Section 3 - The Verdict
I'm teetering between 2.5 stars and 2 stars. The 2.5 stars side of me is focusing on the first half of the novel, the part that I really enjoyed and didn't put down once (thank goodness for novella-length novels!). But the 2-star side of me just can't get passed the unbelievable plot turns, odd language at times, and the incessant repetition.

I've never read anything by Ronica Black before, but I've heard she is well liked among the LGBT population, and I will be sure to give her another try before deciding based on this one novel. I just wish this one kept the same pace in the beginning all the way to the end.

A cute hea short story, featuring a TV star and an author. This is my first book by this author, I'd definitely check out another from her.

Sweet

I've enjoyed reading Ms Blacks' work before and was happy to come across this book. The author has always been able to pull you into her stories and feel for her characters. Maggie and Ellie's story was no different, the pull was there as well as the feelings. Nice refreshing romance of two souls who have been united.

Detailed score: 3.75 rounded up to 4

There is absolutely nothing character or plot wise in this novella that anyone even vaguely familiar with the lesrom genre hasn't seen before. Therefore I think readers' likely enjoyment of this book is going to hinge on a) whether the characters/story push your buttons or not and b) if familiarity breeds contempt or comfort.

For me, largely, it was almost deliciously comfortable familiarity - particularly for the first half of the book.

Let me provide a quick reference guide as to whether you should read this book or not:

Do you like your characters to be successful, yet humble? stoic but crying out for the right woman to come along so they can (finally) let down their walls?

Yes? Please continue. No - this book is probably not for you.

Would you like to read about said successful, stoic characters being snowed in together for a few days if what you're predicting in terms of how this storyline might progress is pretty much exactly what happens??

Yes? Read the book! No - this book is probably not for you.

The book is well written (show not tell) and well paced - with its lack of originality it needed to be - although as I noted (hidden in the spoiler) above, some of the language gets a bit melodramatic in the latter half.

I think in some ways I'm feeling a bit self-conscious about rating this book so highly because I know others won't (and I understand these sentiments). But. Ultimately, I read lesroms to escape and this novella did a great job of pushing my 'celesbian, strong on the outside, vulnerable underneath character' buttons so it's 4 stars from me. :)

Short read and because of this I felt the relationship rushed, scenarios and dialogues abrupt.
All the same it was a breeze entertaining read.

I gave this 2 stars because I liked the idea of the book even though the outcome was disappointing. It could have been a brilliant book but it was too short, too rushed and too forced. If not for Ronica Black I'd have given this 1 star.

Quick read. A little spicy in places. Not really angst filled nor any surprises. A love story that makes you smile.

I received a copy from Netgalley.

A beautifully written, passionate and romantic novella. I read this in less than an hour and loved every word of it. The novella tells the story of two very different women, world famous actress Ellie and reclusive writer Maggie. Maggie lives in remote cabin and a panicked call from a friend leads her to find Ellie who has been visiting the same friend and crashed her SUV in the snow.
Maggie is quiet and sensible whilst Ellie is clearly hiding from something, she’s confused and disorientated from the accident and very suspicious. Being a world famous actress she has the idea in her head that everyone is out to get something from her. Maggie is simply a nice kind person who wants to help because she wants to help.
Maggie has a few secrets of her own, she’s been hurt in a previous relationship many years ago and its had a damaging lasting effect. As Ellie stays and recovers she gets to know Maggie better and realise things about herself she’s tried to bury and ignore for many many years.
Its soft and romantic as the two fall into a passionate relationship. Very intimate, and (very hot) sex scenes. Though not without its problems as Maggie and Ellie have to deal with each other and Ellie’s life in the public eye and Maggie’s tendency to hide from people. Amazingly pulled together for such a short novella and just 110 pages, but believable with two different but well written lead characters.
I loved it.

Thank you Netgalley and Bold Stroke Books for approving my request to view the title.

Hmmm
Ellie wants to escape her life for awhile but a snowstorm threatens to make that permanent. Maggie comes to her rescue and the tow quickly develop an intimate relationship. Can what they have live longer than the storm?

I have really mixed feelings about this book. I liked the concept a great deal. However I felt everything except the sex scenes was rushed. I do realize this is a short novel and things needed to progress rapidly, but maybe not so quickly. It seemed, to me, to lack any real substance. The little bit of conflict was solved WAY too easily. I wanted to love this story but I just didn't feel much of anything but disappointment. I will read other books from Ms. Black to see if this was a one off that I didn't care for or if it is her style that leaves me wanting.

Good short story if you are looking at only spending a few hours to read, and one that comes development on the characters. I've actually enjoyed the book all the way until the romance kicks in at full force. All the build up has been great, but then suddenly these two women who have their own issues (and one of them being trust issues) suddenly just fell absolutely madly in love and became inseparable. I would personally like the story to be left at the same pacing of the build up, but if you like a quick romance that comes with a happy ending, this maybe your book. All in all I'd say a 3.5 stars.

I loved it!

Two beautiful women, snow, a cabin with a fireplace. Those are the ingredients for a real love story. And that's what you get, a sweet short romance without too much drama but with a few hot and steamy scenes. I have really enjoyed it.

A fine quick read, I've definitely read a lot worse but the short length of this is obviously going to reflect on the amount the development the relationship gets.

However, I think it achieves what it aims too and is a fairly good quick read.

An insta-romance set off by a snow storm

An insta-romance set off by a snow storm. Everything happens so quickly its like they microwaved the relationship. Despite that though, it is a good read.

I love a good romance novel, but this one didn't flow well. The story didn't really make sense and was not well fleshed out. If there were just a few more pages scattered without the book, it could have been much better.

Famous reclusive author meets famous unhappy star. Tropey and unimaginative. If you want tongues battling for dominance and people calling each other's hoohaas "heaven", this one is for you. I think this is a great read if you're down with really high fever and your brain is operating at 20%.

Snow Angel had the potential to be a better story, but neither really liked either character, being 105 pages only, you have no chance too develop enough back story and been a better read if the author developed the characters more.

This was written quite well and I especially liked the first three quarters of the story, since this is where we see the relationship between Ellie and Maggie evolving. When things take a turn for the dramatic, it reaches a point where you almost feel as if you're watching a soap opera, complete with all the angst. Love doesn't really have a set time table, so it is quite possible that these two women did fall in love with one another while they were trapped in the snowstorm. I was just a bit wary about the intensity of that love and how they handled what happened when reality stepped in. Overall, I'm giving Snow Angel four stars. ♥

Dear Book,

I have to be honest. I found you just OK. Please don't be upset. It's not you, it's me. I requested you out of curiosity, ignoring the tiny voice inside me that was reminding me that I'm not a big fan of romances.

If I were someone, who say WAS a fan of romances, I would have found you sweet with enjoyable if unoriginal tropes. A nice dependable girl-next-door type, who also likes to have hot sex.

I hope that you can find someone else worthy of you, who can appreciate your charm, but from me, this is goodbye.

Started to read it...had high hopes after reading the synopsis..but started to lose interest in around (35%) chapter 9...so for now i'll put it on the shelve.

Ellie's paranoia is just so annoying, i dont know how many times you need to convey this to the reader, but for me it was a bit too often for my liking. Progress of the character development was just too slow...progression of events was also too slow...,

Maybe im just not in the right head space for this style of writing? I fon't know...,guess we'll know when i decide to finish this book. I'll just go back and reread some other of my favorite books for now.

The premise - a reclusive writer in Northern Arizona has her world shaken when a tv star needs rescuing during a snow storm - had me hooked. Reclusive, writing, Northern Arizona, and snow storms are some of my favourite things in life. In theory, I should have enjoyed this more than I actually did. Unfortunately it was too rushed, the characters underdeveloped, and the plot too contrived. If it was made into a full length novel, with more character development and background, it could be a great read.
