This book will help readers understand the practice of qualitative research--whether they want to do it, teach it, or just learn about it. All the major research phases are encompassed (startup, design, data collection, analysis, and composing), including newly emerging trends. Numerous easy-to-read vignettes show how other scholars have successfully implemented specific procedures. Equally distinctive, the book presents qualitative research as an adaptive craft. The array of choices among different procedures and methods enables readers to customize their own studies and to accommodate different worldviews and genres. Pedagogical Features *Chapters start with an abstract and end with a suggested exercise. *Key terms and concepts appear in boldface throughout the text and are listed in end-of-chapter recaps as well as in the book’s glossary. *Sections within each chapter start with a preview “What you should learn from this section." *An appendix presents a semester- or yearlong field-based project.
Informative and easy-to-read; finished it in a few hours. It provides a clear and comprehensive overview of qual research. Well, it is comprehensive in an overview way--fantastic for an understanding of what goes into qualitative research and what to expect. The vignettes were not worth much to me but they might prove useful to others. The author's case study book provides in depth info on my design so I'm good to go!
This is definitely a well-researched book on qualitative research. But I did struggle in finishing it due to personal reasons like getting irritated early due to the author’s positionally that implies qualitative research is deficient compared to quantitative one in the first chapter and how some of the vignettes placement is a bit distracting. I might reread it when I am in the mood and in need to do so sometime in the future.
Great overview and refresher on the qualitative research process. The book was well organized and the writing was informative without being distractedly academic.
Lots of useful, though a bit outdated, information, but since it’s so information-heavy it’s a tough read to get through. At least the language is easy to follow.
