In book seven of the Rune Alexander series, Rune meets new allies, enters a bizarre and vaguely familiar world, and realizes all over again that she can never really trust anyone.
Except, maybe, the one she lost...
Sucked into Skyll by the echoes of Wormwood, she must complete a very important task in order to return to the world in which she belongs.
She realizes that when she does return, her world will be changed.
If she returns.
If...because Skyll contains something more precious to her than anything in ANY world.
But the Others of her world--all Others, including those she loves--will die if she stays.
Either way, her choice will shatter not only her, but those who love her.
Those who need her.
Join Rune as she walks through the world of her creation. She'll find old faces and new enemies, will uncover bitter secrets, and will have to fight horror without her monster or her crew.
She will come to understand quickly that torture and despair are the rule, and that tiny silver threads of hope are all that keep Skyll from plunging over the edge to be lost forever in the black depths of hell.
Laken was first published in 2008. After a few exciting years with her publishers, she struck out on her own to write the now complete Rune Alexander series, and never looked back.
She shares her Ohio home with three spoiled dogs, two fish, and a tenacious African Violet. She drinks too much coffee and continues burning up the keys of her trusty laptop, getting the stories out of her head and into her readers' hands.
As much as I love Z, Strad holds my heart. So it is no surprise that this book didn't turn out to be a winner for me. I understand Rune's love for Z, but still... I am furious over the ending. In fact, I'm furious of the whole fucking book. I am this close to just say 'fuck it' and be done with this series...so who knows if I'll continue with the series... Rate: 1.5 stars.
A HUGE thank you to Laken Cane for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
After one hell of a cliffhanger ending in Wormwood Echoes, Laken takes us into the dark world of Skyll. Rune has her hands full once again, fighting the clock trying to find a cure for a dreaded disease that is killing Others and most importantly some of her crew. It won't be easy, it never is...ultimate betrayals surface, love and loss will push Rune to her limits and in the end Rune will be faced with difficult choices. I don't think I can find the words to tell you how much I LOVED this book, better yet this entire series. It is no secret that I think Laken is absolutely AWESOME. Each book in this series is captivating. You will not be able to put them down and when you reach the final page, you will only want more! Laken has created such an amazing cast of characters, you find yourself emotional invested and each betrayal, loss or sentimental moment are felt as if you were a part of the Crew. It's been a long time since one story has pulled me in so deep. Don't miss out on one heck of dark urban fantasy series. ❤️❤️ you Laken!!! Always a Z Girl
Nothing made sense. everything was just chaos. No planning, no strategy. No development of anyone.
This one book was about an entirely new world and we barely explored it. We met new people, but most die within pages. There's some old faces, but they're all broken. This book was about hope, faith, destiny, etc... but was more about evil, cruelty, and brutality... there was forgiveness and second chances though, for like three people, soooo, good for them?
Nothing was logical and I don't accept magic or love as answers for poor writing. There were multiple editing errors, which is just annoying.
There were so many new characters who, while seemingly complex, are really just vague, but intriguing nonetheless. This book could have been flushed out into two books easily, and this was a short book! There were new creatures, extreme climates, a crazy government structure, and so fourth!
So many great ideas that failed to deliver. Perhaps I'm just being picky, as these are candy books, but I want more from this badass bitch who is forever a part of me. I am my monster.
I really, really wanted to like this; which might be part of why it's getting 3 stars (that, and the ending, maybe the last 20 percent of the book.) Sadly, the 7th installment feels both long, and drawn out; and though it finally gives a lot of answers to some characters, and even, plausible "endings", none feel satisfactory. Most of the characters, once more, lack any depth or personality; and most who had developed those, hardly exist here. There is little depth and description in the writing itself; and it felt like the author, perhaps, was also just tired of the characters at certain stints here.
Hopefully, if there is a followup, there will be more effort; but I'd be fine with this being the last Shiv Crew book if we aren't going to get more like books 3 or 5.
Just let me start with the four star rating. It is a very large compliment. Only the very best classics get 5 stars. This book was imaginative, exciting and left me wanting more. The series is spectacular and engrossing. I'm always looking for talented authors and I've found a gem.
Yet another book that you can't put down until it's over!
These books are so great that I want to read them as slow as possible so they last but I can put them down until I'm done. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book just like so many other fans out there!
Im SO disappointed! The story itself, the plot was fantastic. The Z crap is just that, crap. Z is her soulmate, her forever love!?!? Since friggin when? He was probably the least mentioned character in all the other books until he died even though in the first book she felt something for Strad, out of nowhere Z is the 'one'. It doesnt ring true, it seems desperate and worse it makes Rune a faithless, disloyal flake who barely seemed to consider Z as anything other than her favorite friend but hops right onto his penis instantly out of nowhere in this book as if Strad was nothing through ALL the other books plus shes seconds from humping Owen too which at least had pretext. Shes also very unlikable right from the start. Shes entitled, full of herself, un believably friggin rude to people who are trying to help her, and OF COURSE the second miss ' im so bad' walks off alone she gets her ass ROCKED AGAIN! EVERYTIME!!! I love this story and this book was as good as all the others but Rune was really unlikable and i was just disappointed . Z shouldve stated her favorite and all the 'feelings' should ve been for Strad since he showed anyway. And one more thing, and Im sorry to be one of the critical assholes but the whole ' something in her changed ' is getting old. It realllllly happens alot. Uf anyone irrevocably changed deep within as much as she does she d be unrecognizable by now. This book was wonderful dont mistake me, but I couldnt leave the Z thing unsaid and I cannot be the only one. It was just super left field and unnecessary and just wrong. It woulda meant more if she loved him but not in that way. Great, amazing writing as usual though.
The first book in a while to get 4 stars. It was constant hell and torture but by the end, despite how sad it all was, I actually thought it was extremely… liberating. Cleansing. It’s almost like all the drama I hated got washed away. For a moment, I felt clean.
I think Rune’s relationships were all wonky. I thought I knew what was what but this book forced a change I wasn’t able to flow with and it just didn’t go down my throat smoothly. It made me question the things I got out of the earlier books. And I hate feeling like I missed stuff.
By this point I can only accept what I’m being told. There was a lot of anger until the other characters did the same thing, then that anger turned to resignation. Admitted defeat that she was in the right “eventually”. It was a lot.
It was a LOT. Random beasts taping rebels, Rune watching it all go on like she’s on meds, fighting and fighting. She got raped again but it’s just another detail by this point, that’s how desensitized I’ve become. I don’t think I’ve ever read a series that could make such huge things in my life so… arbitrary. Or maybe that’s not the right word. But I’m used to BOOKS dealing with a single trauma. And these pages breed them like bunnies that die as quickly as they’re born. It’s like a bruise that fades. Normal. Just… it’s a lot for me.
Last we saw inexhaustible Rune, she’d figured out where the echoes were, gotten the team to calm a bit about Owen and found herself in Skyll with cries of Princess echoing in her ears, Damascus’ domain! Rune may not know much about this world but she does know she has to get the cure and rid the world of Damascus in the process.
New, old and unexpected friends and enemies are here to help, hinder or watch Rune take the next steps on her personal journey and she learns quite a bit about herself and this time the question isn’t how will this change Rune but if there’ll be a Rune to pick up the pieces that broke her today and go get some food and rest so she save us all again tomorrow. Rating: 4.5stars
Rune shows little feelings at the beginning of her journey for anyone but her crew, and while she is less annoying in this new book with the writing style and lack of tantrums, the series gets WAY OUT THERE in the fantasy and unbelievable realm, and the time spent in the other world drags on too long. A big dynamic was changed with a revisit to an old character to where it's melodramatic and wasn't what I remembered at all, and there's some depressing stuff - of course and again. The ending does pick up but this one is an out of control fantasy ride where Rune wears the super-special badge constantly. And why does this much torture have to constantly be in the books?
Finally made good decisions. This book, imo was the best of the series so far. This writer is truly gifted. You feel every horror, every despair with the words dripping off the pages. You get so immersed into the story, feeling every pain felt, joy, hope. Everything! One surprise after another. So very well written with everything flowing. It was a marvel!
This series has been a quick, semi-interesting read, and I think I’m done. The author does a lot of telling and not a lot of showing, and that bugs me. Like, why do they hate each other? Why do they love each other? What’s going on here? The thing that keeps me going are the dang cliffhangers at the end of every book, but now I’m over it.
I rate books on how the story pulls me in or if I'm surprised by the direction it's going in. I've been reading these books one after the other and they're getting better. I've been pulled in and I want more!
So many surprises, twists, and turns. Finding out what needs to be done first. what can be put off for a little while. So many surprises!! Awesome, awesome read!! Can't wait to get into book 8!!! Very addictive series!!! You won't be disappointed!!!
RUNED!!! I'm falling apart. Loads and buckets of screams and tears. Wonderfully broken. In love with these books, but think maybe Laken Jane hates me. Such a great series.
Ugg, this one pulled no punches. It beats you emotionally, and just when you think it's over, a clawed hand to the chest, rips your heart out. More? Yes, please!
I can’t say much without spoilers so just know, with the triumphs come such bitter bitter sweet tears. I have sobbed and it’s not just from lack of sleep from power reading through…
Oh my Goddess, this series just keeps getting you more and more, it doesn't stop, the characters the storyline and the plot, wow, just, WOW!!! This author is so talented , her imagination is almost in paralleled. Brilliant
Wormwood Echoes (book 6) filled us with a lot of information, but was different from the other books. I get it now. We needed that information because of the epic battle Rune faces in this book. The cliffhanger from that book was worth it to get this one. Holy mother of all things Skyll! This was an incredible read! The action is there, the heart ache is high, the love, all the Z, everything that makes this series great is in this book. There is nothing I found lacking in The Witch's Daughter. A must read for Rune fans, for sure. Rune has been thrust into the strange hell of Skyll by Gunther, But he didn't tell her everything. When she finds her true love alive and sort of well in Skyll, she hangs on tight to that. But she has a job to do, and that is to kill Damascus. The witch is turning this afterlife into a nightmare and Rune isn't sure who she can trust here. When she comes across old enemies and others she thought she would never see again, things get difficult for her. But when are they not? And when some of her team appear, her heart is ripped to shreads. How can she go back, when so much she loves is here? The sickness is killing her friends, so she must find the cure. That won't be all she finds, when she learns who caused it. And little did she know, she has been foretold as a savior to Skyll, a title she wants nothing to do with. The action never stops, and this rollercoaster isn't letting you off until you are dizzy and green. I really believe this may be the best paranormal book out there. The author gave her heart and soul to this one. As an avid reader, I am in awe of the way so much is wrapped and twisted around in this book to take you on the perfect journey through Rune's kind of hell. Can't wait for more....after I reread this one a few more times. Get hooked on one of the greatest paranormal series' out there. Now!
How do I write a review on this amazing, epic book? It has been weeks and yet I still do not have the words. I couldn't write a review immediately after finishing it because I had to have time to recover from the emotional upheaval this book caused me. I'm still not over it. So where do I begin?
Laken Cane is an incredible Urban Fantasy author! Her ability to tell a story is extraordinary. In TWD, she takes us to another realm; a world where suffering, torture, and death is the norm. The world building is done so well that I could picture this living hell in my mind, walk the long miles beside Rune. We find so many answers within this installment, yet we have more questions. The life altering journey Rune goes through in this book is at times intensely exciting and at others heartbreaking. This one is not for the faint of heart. Like I said, this new realm has torture as the norm and at times the violence gets very descriptive. With the way Laken writes, it's like you are right there watching it. Her ability to form a character with depth and personality within the pages of a book is stunning. You will meet new characters and say good riddance to others within this book. When the epic ending comes, you don't want to leave Rune's side. You want to know more, right then; but that is the way I feel with each of the books in this series.
KEEP WRITING! Like right now! Finish the next book!!! Lol. Thank you for another epic book!
This book is a Dark Urban Fantasy and does have scenes with intimacy.
Eagerly anticipated seventh installment to a favorite series! What a jaw-dropping opener this one had; Z!!!! Enrapturing, captivating, and um, did I miss something?! Shocking in the best way... I'm so glad that Rune finally gets called out on the fact that she calls everyone "Baby!" A cute endearment that has grown on me, but was definitely an acquired taste. This one for me goes from zero to sixty, and then to thirty. It starts out on such a 'wowzah', that it's difficult to keep that momentum I believe. We are thrust into this new world with Rune (quite literally). We learn so many new astonishing details, meet so many new people that albeit exciting, slows things down a bit. But fret not, because it's back up in no time, the familiarity has returned and the building blocks for the next one are slowly being stacked. Eventhough she has occasional doubts, Rune's confidence is now out of this world and watching her grow is amazing (yes reading these novels is like watching a great series)! Rune's relationships with and love for the other characters is awesomeness; and though we miss some of our friends in this installment, she forges some new and unlikely bonds in this book. I like to think that I'm pretty adept at "figuring out the climactic surprise" which is why some books bore me, but I didn't see this one coming, nor did I want to. A couple of times my mouth was agape so long it became dry, and now I must wait for book eight for that glass of water.
After the positively evil cliffhanger in Wormwood Echoes I was really excited to get my hands on this one and Laken Cane definitely didn’t disappoint. There was so much going on in Skyll. It was an entirely different world inhabited by strange and terrifying creatures, old friends, and enemies determined to either use Rune or destroy her. Rune was stuck essentially all alone, no crew, and not knowing who she could trust. This book was freaking amazing. I loved all the action and my goodness the things Rune goes through only to emerge stronger for it. I love how she keeps going. She gets knocked down, decimated, broken, but then she picks herself up even if she doesn’t really want to and she keeps freaking going. She builds herself up stronger each time. She is such an amazing character and a lot of the reason I love these books. This is one of those series that I connive and annoy and cajole and implore my friends to read. It is such an amazing series. And even if Ms. Cane has ripped me apart yet again with this one I can’t wait to see what happens next.
***Received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review***
The Witch's Daughter was just hell on wheels, probably my favorite Laken Cane book sine Shiv Crew. In this 7th installment of the Rune Alexander series, Rune has found herself in Skyll, a land that is a cross between purgatory and Mordor. Facing Rune are obstacles meant to break the body and spirit in her quest to save herself and friends. What I found to be the most clever technique of world-building is that this anti-universe allows for the reintroduction of several long forgotten characters, as well as many new cast members - each with their own agenda. Rune is faced with her own mortality and the fragility of her heart. The last half of the book proceeds at a breakneck speed; the bodies mount and emotions swell. I know my heart broke and I eagerly anticipate the next story where I hope Rune, and I, recover from the pain caused by the Witch's Daughter.
A very solid five stars. More if I was able to change the star ratings. So much action, emotions, losses, heartache. Oh Ms. Cane how can you break our poor readers hearts by ending it that way. Why oh why??? Didn't Rune go through enough already? How do you torture her so? I was so happy to see Z again, very thrilled Rune admitted her love for him and he got to love her finally. I was absolutely thrilled with the demise of the witch but you Ms. Cane just had to go and ruin it all by causing so much heartache at the end. I hope you're happy with yourself. Now how much longer do readers have to wait for the next one. Please tell me there's a next one. Everyone this series is a MUST read. This installment was well worth the wait and yes the heartache too. This is definitely one of my favorite series.
