Christiane Rochefort (1917-1998)

French writer, social critic, and feminist, who examined in her novels the situation of women and children, female sexuality, and struggle for personal freedom. Rochefort gained international fame with Le Repos du guerrier (1958, Warrior's Rest), which was made into a film in 1962, starring Brigitte Bardot. Les petits enfants du siècle (1961), another widely translated novel, was a commentary on the French government-assistance epoch. Rochefort received Prix du Roman Populiste in 1961 and the Medicis Prize in 1988.

خب...
احتمالا این کتاب، برای هرکسی که در دهه چهل و یا حتی پنجاه و شصت اون رو میخوند، عزیز می‌بود.
در واقع ایران هم تقریبا چنین فاجعه‌ای رو بعدها در دهه شصت به شکل دیگری تجربه کرد ولی به دلایلی از برخی جهات سربلندتر بیرون اومد.
داستان درباره‌ی برهه‌ای از تاریخ قرن بیست فرانسه است که دولت به دلیل پیشرفت جمعیت به سوی پیری و کمبود نیروی کار جوان به دلایلی از جمله جنگ و ... تصمیم میگیره به خانواده‌ها به ازای هر فرزندی که به دنیا میارن ، مبالغ و منافعی در نظر بگیره و به همین دلیل بسیاری از خانواده‌های ضعیف شروع میکنند به بچه پس انداختن. بچه‌ها در کودکی فقط وسیله‌ای هستند برای تامین منافع مادی سرپرستان و بزرگتر که میشوند، پسرها در خدمت دولت و دختر ها وظیفه‌ی رسیدگی به بچه‌های تازه متولد شده و کارهای خانه هستند تا زمانی که ازدواج کنند و خود شروع کنن به بچه پس انداختن و ...
و این بستری هست برای کتاب حاضر تا نویسنده بتونه داستان خودش رو از زبان دختری که در واقع نمونه کاملی از بچه‌های کوچک اون قرن هست روایت کنه و البته سعی داره تحلیل های جامعه شناختی هم به داستان اضافی کنه که گاها خوب از آب درمیاد گاها هم نه.
ترجمه هم طبق انتظار فوق‌العاده روان بود ولی آخر داستان رو دوست نداشتم.

در قرن هجدهم جمعیت فرانسه نیمی از جمعیت اروپا بود. این نسبت عددی بعد از جنگ جهانی اول که بیشترین خسارات جانی متعلق به فرانسه بود، به یک دهم رسید. از این رو دولت فرانسه بر آن شد تا قانونی برای افزایش جمعیت به تصویب برساند. "اداره مدد معاش خانواده" به ازای تولد هر نوزاد مبلغی به والدینِ نوزاد پرداخت می کرد. مبلغی که با بدنیا آمدن نوزادان بعدی، افزایش تصاعدی پیدا می کرد. بعد از این قانون در عرض چند سال جمعیت فرانسه رشد چشمگیری داشت که این امر مشکلات متعددی برای دولت بوجود آورد و این مشکلات و معضلات اجتماعی دستمایه این رمان شد.
روشفور برای ترسیم معضلات جتماعی یک خانواده را انتخاب می کند و بر روی آن تمرکز می کند. جمله ی آغازینِ رمان آناکارنینا (تمام خانواده های خوشبحت شبیه یکدیگرند، اما هر خانواده بدبخت به شکل خاص خودش بدبخت است) حداقل درباره خانواده های این رمان صدق نمی کند. خانواده های بدبخت رمان شباهت زیادی به یکدیگر دارند. پدرانی که اهل تفریح و عیاشی هستند و مادرانی که دلشان به این خوش است با هر بار زایمان، پیش دیگر زنان، پز فرزند بیشتر را بدهند و مبلغی از آن پول را صرف رنگین تر کردن خانه خود بکنند و در چنین محیطی که تولد فرزند به واسطه دریافت پول است و نه از روی عشق و محبت، چه بلایی بر سر آن نسل و تربیت شان خواهد آمد؟
راوی رمان ژوزیان نام دارد که فرزند ارشد خانواده ایست که مادر خانواده پشت سر هم می زاید و ژوزیان مجبور است از همان کودکی کمک حال مادر در کارِ خانه و بچه داری باشد. مثل یک مادر کوچولوی واقعی (آنچنان که زنان همسایه صدایش می کنند) و تنها دلخوشی کوچک ژوزیان وقتی است که تمام خانواده به خواب می روند تا او این فرصت را پیدا کند تا در دلِ سکوت شبانه به تکالیف مدرسه اش برسد.
ژوزیانِ به چنان درجه ای از بی تفاوتی می رسد که هیچ شکایتی نسبت به حجم کارهای بالایش نمی کند. ژوزیان احساس بیگانگی و تنهایی می کند و تنها فرزند هفتم خانواده (نیکولا) را قابل اعتماد می داند و با وجود سن کم نیکولا پیش او درد دل می کند، اما ناگهان جوانی ایتالیایی به نام گیدو به او دل می بندد و به زندگی کسالت بار دخترک 12 ساله شوری می بخشد. عشق از راه رسیده، ژوزیان را که برای اولین بار عشق و محبت را تجربه می کند، متحول می کند و او را جسور و عصیان گر می کند، اما دیری نمی پاید که شرایط شغلی گیدو بین آن دو جدایی می اندازد.
ژوزیان که حالا هدفی پیدا کرده است، به جستجوی گیدو در شهرک سارسل (در نزدیکی پاریس) می پردازد و در این مسیر تن به هر خواسته ای می دهد، بی آن غمگین شود. چون برایش همه چیز این دنیا پوچ است الا عشق گیدو، اما تلاشش بی ثمر می ماند. این سرخوردگی از ژوزیان دختر دیگری می سازد. دختری سر در گم و بی هدف که از زندگی لذت نمی برد و وجودش پر می شود از نفرت. از پدر و مادر گرفته تا غریبه ها، اما این هم پایان کار ژوزیان نیست و اتفاقات مهمی در سر راه اوست ...
روشفور نویسندگی را با رمان "استراحت جنگجو" شروع کرد. او سه سال بعد در 1961 "بچه های کوچک این قرن" را نوشت و به شهرت رسید. روشفور سرانجام در سال 1998 و در سن 80 سالگی درگذشت. از او دو کتاب به فارسی ترجمه شده است. یکی همین رمان کمیاب با ترجمه درخشان ابوالحسن نجفی که سال هاست چاپ نمی شود و دیگری "استراحت جنگجو" با ترجمه پرویز شهدی.

با خوشحالی تمام می تونم بگم که کتاب خوبی بود. از حس کردن تمام احساساتی که توی کتاب وجود داشت لذت بردم، چه درد و رنج، چه عشق و محبت، چه تحقیر و چه خشم. این کتاب با تمامی جنبه هایی که داشت، بدون سانسور که روح هر کتاب رو از اون می گیره باعث شد به بخش هایی از احساسات خودم دست پیدا کنم که برام ناشناخته بودند.
ژو، دختربچه ای که مجبور بود خیلی زودتر از حد عادی بزرگتر شود تا به خواهرها و برادرهای کوچک ترش رسیدگی کند، در جامعه ای که از نظر من بین مدرنیته و سنت سردرگم بود از نظر من نمادی بود از تمامی کودکانی که جای خود را در زندگی پیدا نکردند. در این دوره از فرانسه، که برای رشد جمعیتی به هر کودکی که متولد می شد مبلغی پول اختصاص داده می شد انفجار جمعیتی شدیدی رخ داد که هرچند باعث شد کشور فرانسه به هدف خود برسد، اما نتایج بسیار بدی هم داشت. نتیجه تعداد زیادی کودک بود که خانواده ها، توانایی تربیت صحیح آن ها را نداشتند. مشتی کودک که به خیابان ها ریخته می شد و مشتی دیگر در رخت خواب ها و گهواره ها جایگزین می شد.

شاید اگر پایان‌بندی بسیار نامربوط و غیر منطقی این رمان نبود آن را خیلی بیشتر دوست می‌داشتم.
آخر چطور ممکن است بچه‌ای که به او تجاوز شده، هزار آسیب جنسی دیده(بی‌آنکه بداند)، در خانواده‌‌ کلفتی کرده و تحقیر شده، بزرگ شود و یک‌دفعه جفت خود را بیابد و بعد« با هم به خوبی و خوشی...»!؟ من ژو را به خاطر سایه‌هایش دوست می‌داشتم و از صفحات آخر کتاب به بعد، او دیگر سایه‌ای نداشت؛ دیگر واقعی نبود.

This book is easy to read. The words are simple but the message is very strong. This is a very moving story about the life of Josianne, first child of a family of 11 children, in the suburb of Paris after May 68.

This is a tale of childhood in Bagnolet (north of Paris), one of the "grands ensembles", the vast high-rise housing projects of post-war France. The point of view is that of the child-narrator, Josyanne, whose early life is blighted by the drudgery consequent upon the almost annual arrival of new siblings. With few exceptions, Jo has little respect for parents, siblings, neighbours, or government policies. She has a sharp eye for whatever is stupid, mean or ridiculous, and a sharp tongue to match it. Several familiar domestic nouns, I learned, have insulting alternative meanings:
andouille (f) - a cold sausage; an imbecile
ballot (m) - bundle; nitwit
cloche (f) - bell; dish-cover; idiot
gourde (f) - water bottle; a dope
lavette (f) - dishcloth; face flannel; wimp
The state provides to each family in the estates according to how many children there are, and Jo reserves her choicest satire for parents like her own who are deliberately breeding their way towards the largest appartment, with a washing machine and all the mod cons, and even an old car for transport.

Jo struggles to find joy and meaning in her squalid surroundings. School homework, which she must do when the rest of the family is in bed, provides her earliest outlet. Despite good results, there is no question of continuing her schooling, and with no apparent aptitude for gainful employment she has little outside the home to occupy her mind. A short acquaintance with an emotionally needy Italian building worker, who delights her with his nostalgic talk of sunshine and his native hills, leads to sexual awakening. Jo soon realises her power as a sexually attractive (if legally underage) young woman, and exploits it for physical gratification and to get her hands on a scooter. The scooter opens her horizons. She sees the new projects at Sarcelles (recently in the news [July 2014] for anti-Jewish riots) which have such facilities and are conceived on such a scale that they are beyond anything she could have imagined.

Sarcelles is the limit of her scope. She meets Philippe, they fall in love and Jo is happy at last. He is 22yo, he has a job and his credit is good enough to buy a small car before their first date. Jo is old enough to marry, but barely, and falls pregnant (that she hadn't done so by one of her earlier partners would be something of a miracle if this were not fiction). They're on the waiting list for an appartment in Sarcelles, and Jo, for all her caustic commentary, is about to repeat the lives of her parents and she is content (for the time being). End of story.

Les petits enfants du siècle appeared in 1961, before the end of the war in Algeria, with the consequent mass influx of Pieds-Noirs (French colonials born in Algeria). The issues in the grands ensembles were less complex. Jo's family are apparently «françaises de souche» (of French ancestry). Ethnicity and religion are issues that don't arise.

The grands ensembles are a product of post-war reconstruction and the welfare state. The economy of France was booming and government was intent on providing labour for the factories, and presumably on keeping the workforce docile by providing for their material needs. The discontents (consumerism, authority, labour, sexual constraints) of the post-war generation that would explode all over France in May 1968 are anticipated in this novel. While I would have liked to see its feisty narrator break out of the limitations imposed on her by her environment, I will admit that given her time and circumstances, the course which her career takes is more plausible.

Writing style was nice and simple while immensely impressive at the same time. This book shocks and astounds but opens up your mind without handing you the criticism on a silver platter; it is hidden and when you look well it is abundant. In the end I quite enjoyed using this book for my essay on maternal roles and popular feminist views on this during the second feminist wave. While I wasn't open to discussion of maternal love at first, I am much more critical now and I always like to be educated on new topics in order to have a fresh outlook. I would recommend this book to anyone who's currently studying the second feminist wave.

Je l'ai fini! Mon premier roman en Français!! Félicitations à moi.... Je pense que j'ai compris peut-être 50% des mots mais je suis encore fiére! Je dois écrire une présentation sur le sujet de cette livre maintenant, ouais les banlieues, le chômage, les Allocations. J'ai hâte de l'écrire.

Just read a really cool bit amongst the poverty and the discussion of cars and the weather.

داستان توی فرانسه‌ی بعد از ج ج دومی می‌گذره که به شدت با کمبود جمعیت روبه‌رو شده و حالا دولت با امتیازهایی که گذاشته، داره مردم رو به بچه‌دار شدن تشویش می‌کنه. قطعاً این خیلی یادآور دهه‌ی ۶۰ خودمونه. من به شدت از راوی داستان خوشم اومد که دختر ۱۴ساله‌ایه که بیشتر مسئولیت‌های بچه‌های خانواده با اونه و درگیر چندتا ماجرا می‌شه (مثل اولین تجربه‌ی سکشوالش که با یه مرد بزرگ‌تری پیش میاد) و برخوردی که با اینا داره خیلی جالبه.

i read this for class and i really enjoyed josyane as a narrator.

her innocence and naivety paired with her adult actions and desires are so pertinent to her character and her overall development.

josyane being so young adds so much nuance to the orthography of the text (ie. des mots en majuscules—- potentiellement des mots qu'elle a entendus de la bouche d'adultes et dont elle sait qu'ils sont importants, mais dont elle ne connaît pas exactement le sens)

words like “les allocations” ou “le martini” are capitalized, and through that capitalization they’re given power or importance, but josyane only assigns this power to things that she knows the adults in her life find important. while she is actively trying to be seen as mature and adult, the orthography gives her away as a child

Ohlala Christiane Rochefort, c'est pas la plus belle plume, mais c'est une des plus authentiques et radicales, c'est pas les histoires les plus folles, mais ça remue beaucoup de rage, de cynisme, d'humour et d'intelligence : être une fillette dans les années 60, grandissant comme une herbe folle au coeur d'une Cité HLM où les enfants pullulent et les familles accumulent les allocations, seule consolation d'une vie médiocre.
Jo de Bagnolet est l'aînée d'une famille de 4, 6, 9, 10 enfants, on ne sait plus trop. Elle est la nounou en chef, la "petite mère" d'une famille ouvrière qui enfle et dépasse ses géniteurs, eux qui hésitent entre l'achat d'un frigo ou d'une baignoire au prochain versement de la CAF. Elle pose un regard caustique et acéré sur le microcosme familial, sur les hommes de la Cité, sur l'avenir de ménagère que lui promet l'Orientation de l'école. Elle ce qu'elle aime, c'est faire ses devoirs. Les autres trouvent ça inutile, mais elle aimerait ça, faire des choses inutiles, pour une fois. C'est Le Petit Nicolas version ouvrière et féministe. La fin pleine d'espoir vous serre le coeur sur la toute fin... la boucle est bouclée, pauvre Jo.

داستان در فرانسه نیمه قرن بیستم می‌گذرد که دولت با پیری جمعیت و کمبود نیروی کار جوان مواجه است و تصمیم گرفته به خانواده‌ها به ازای هر فرزندی که متولد می‌شود مبالغی را پرداخت کند. به همین دلیل خانواده‌های فقیر شروع به تولید مثل می‌کنند و بچه‌ها وسیله‌ای هستند برای تامین منافع مادی والدین. روشفر برای ترسیم معضلات اجتماعی جامعه خانواده را انتخاب کرده و بر روی آن تمرکز می‌کند، خانواده‌های فقیری که پدرانی عیاش و مادرانی که بر سر زایمان با یکدیگر رقابت می‌کنند و دستگاه تولید مثل هستند و فرزندانی که بدون هیچ‌گونه تعلیم و تربیتی بزرگ می‌شوند. معنی عشق و محبت در خانواده‌ها وجود ندارد و اعضای خانواده با یکدیگر با کینه و نفرت رو‌به‌رو می‌شوند. حتی مدارس که مسئول آموزش فرزندان هستند، استقلال، ذوق، استعداد، بینش و اشتیاق به یادگیری کودکان را از بین می‌برد.
شخصیت اصلی داستان دختر اول خانواده‌ فقیری است که هیچ‌گاه طعم محبت را نچشیده است و با بی‌تفاوتی نسبت به زندگی ادامه می‌دهد. دختری بی‌هدف و سردرگم که لذتی جز خوابیدن با پسرها نمی‌شناسد. سرنوشت این دختر در پایان داستان متفاوت خواهد بود، هر چند خوشبختی او باز همان نگاه جنسی همراه با اندکی محبت است.

It is in a very easy language, for me who has been away from the language for a while, I was easily able to understand it.
The story is not as interesting as si thought it would be. felt like anyone could have easily written the story. there was not much effort put into it. As if it was merely made for the sake of the readers who are trying to revise their language, in which case, it is right for the job. I liked reading the story out loud and hearing the words myself.

Read this in school. Can't believe they let us read something so explicit to be honest!
Although now we are post me too the book feels like making entertainment out of child sexual exploitation. That's not even mentioning the rampant disablism.
However it certainly opened my eyes to post war Paris and poverty out with the English speaking west.

Another French book down...
The book kept me going and I liked the society represented along with its problems. However it was quite expected, especially the ending... although had it ended other way the reality would not have been there.

Accidentally bought the abridged version, so lots of the content was missing. This made the book disjointed and difficult to follow. I struggled to connect to the characters and didn't really enjoy the story line.

کتاب بیشتر از اینکه اسم نویسنده را یدک بکشد نام مترجمی بزرگ را بر خود دارد که همین انتخاب خیلی از کتاب خوان ها می باشد.کتاب کمی در زمان حاضر قدیمی و برای نسلی از یاد رفته است.بیشترین کشش همان ترجمه خوب و روان استاد نجفی است.برای ترجمه خوانی پیشنهاد می شود اما داستان کمی قدیمی و خاک گرفته است.

Une langue crue, drôle, lucide et cynique sur cette France des Grands Ensembles dont on parle peu.
On a frôlé le coup de coeur mais un aspect m'a trop dérangée : "l'histoire" entre Guido et Josyane qui n'est jamais nommée pour ce qu'elle est, de la pédophilie.
